Ooh! I think I know this one.
It’s because they’re Discworld books and not Discworld books.
I grew up on a farm and the daughter of a massive sci-fi/fantasy nerd. Which means I could not just go to the library whenever, but I had access to my Dad’s massive collection of sci-fi/fantasy novels from the 70s and 80s. More importantly, I had access to his large collection of parody fantasy novels as well.
And the first 2 Discworld books are parody fantasy novels. They hit damn near every beat for an 80s parody novel. The references to at the time mainstays of high fantasy (Conan the Barbarian, Dragonriders of Pern), commentary on the ridiculousness of chainmail bikinis (but they’re traditional), a genre savvy main character, an inexplicably modern sidekick (time-traveler, interdimensional, outside of time, whatever), and yet still a massive world ending threat that is defeated in a fairly common sense way.
And while these things are still present in later books, they’re… better integrated into the fabric of Discworld itself. The early books were patchworks of the genre, later books are tightly woven tapestries.
Can anyone explain to me why people advice against starting your discworld readings with the first two books?
I thought they were horrible or boring, instead I was pleasantly surprised, and thoroughly enjoyed myself honestly
Colour of magic and light fantastic are great ya all I don't what you guys are smoking

4️⃣ Chumly aka Big Crunch the Troll and Tananda the Trollop (female troll) from Myth Adventures
5️⃣ Gintoki from Gintama - the biggest anime troll ever 😊

Do you remember the book that sparked you to like reading? Or was it always something you liked?
So I was lukewarm on reading as a young kid, I was great at it but didn't seek it out as something to do outside of schoolwork.
And then. In the 5th grade (so like age 11), I was sick enough that I couldn't go to school (ruining my perfect attendance streak which we will NOT be getting into how fucked up that whole system was), but not sick enough to be content doing nothing all day. Apparently I was driving my mom up the wall and she was like STFU KID and threw a book into my lap.
It was A Spell for Chameleon by Piers Anthony.
I got hooked in and blazed thru the Xanth series. She then offered all the other books on her (many many) bookshelves that I'd ignored forever. I tore through various series like Dragonriders of Pern, Dune, Phule's Company, Mythadventures, and Valdemar to name a few.
And so, a love of fantasy and sci-fi series was born.

NaNo Influences #19: The Myth-Adventures of Skeeve and Aahz
My parents had a huge bookshelf in their bedroom which was full of fantasy series, books by Piers Anthony, Alan Dean Foster, Robert Jordan, Mercedes Lackey, and many others. In particular, they liked fantasy that took a different spin on various fantasy tropes or stories, and fantasy that was a little bit silly. Robert Asprin’s Myth-Adventures series is both of these.
The series follows a young magician’s apprentice--and later magician--named Skeeve who, through a series of bizarre circumstances, becomes acquainted with a demon named Aahz, a magician who has lost his powers who takes on Skeeve as an apprentice after Skeeve’s former master dies. In this world, the term “demon” is short for “dimension traveler,” and Skeeve and Aahz go on a number of adventures throughout various dimensions. Each dimension plays host to a different species that has made its way into popular fantasy lore. So you have Imps from Imper, Deveels (Devils) from Deva, and various others. It’s a fun idea, and makes for some amusing characterizations.
As the series progresses, more and more characters join the team started by Skeeve and Aahz, and the series ends up being something of a team story, which are stories I always enjoy and ones that I’ve definitely taken influence in. In a lot of my stories, I like creating a team of characters, and having them interact and grow, both as individuals and as a group. In particular, I took influence from the book in the series called “M.Y.T.H. Inc Link.” This is the seventh book in the series, and the first one where Skeeve is not the sole narrator of the story. By this time, the team has been established, and at the end of the previous book, it was made official, a team of magical problem solvers known throughout the dimensions, headed by Skeeve and Aahz. Instead of one story, the book is divided into five mini-stories, each told from the point of view of one of the characters. What’s fun about this is that each character has a very distinctive voice, so the writing style is markedly different. And at the end, it’s revealed that there is actually a loose connection between the five stories. This goes back to my love for telling stories from multiple perspectives. I also like trying out different voices and dividing a longer story into little mini-stories which, eventually, turn out to be connected. This book really showcases the team as a character, and I love doing that in my own stories as well.

the monarchs in my original fiction are all Fisher Kings who are essentially possessed by the local spirits of nature and suffer from pseudo omniscience of all life forms residing on their lands and the main character has the unlucky fortune to be the one who connects All Things! and yes he goes temporarily insane.
his is the only hereditary one too :)
they don’t do a lot of ruling they do a lot of sleeping under mountains and being eldritch beings, whenever they try to get into politics bad things happen
the riddlemaster/earthsea era of SFF is the biggest influence on my stories, I don’t think I ever really got super into romantic fantasy (although I suppose Tortall might edge on it, and I loved Tortall).
also the Mythadventures (Robert Aspirin) and the Chronicles of Prydain, which are more genre-flipping versions of the same coming-of-age-but-solemner fantasy I liked
(if anyone out there in the universe has read the riddlemaster of hed by Patricia A McKillip I think I’m destined to marry you, because I’ve never met anyone who’s ever read it besides me and my mom and the people I’ve forced to read it.)

What did you enjoy reading growing up?
a whole lot. a wide variety of stuff, from the hobbit and jkr's wizard books or xanth or mythadventures to the sword of truth or wheel of time game of thrones, plus sci-fi like ray bradbury short story collections or contemporary stuff (spin and chameleon come to mind). was also a brandon sanderson fan for a little bit. sometimes historical fiction (i remember my mom getting mad because i spoiled the end of the book thief by saying it had a sad ending. it's a book about the holocaust)

((Hey folk, Mun here! I’m gonna pin this post to answer some commonly asked questions about my Muse
Question 1: is he a ghost?
No! Monkquius (as I have taken to calling him to differentiate him from the many Equiui out there) is not a ghost, he escaped death by doomed timeline via a dimension hop, the place he resides in now (the Grand Bazaar) has different rules that allowed him to exist without interfering with the prime timeline.
Question 2: what is the Grand Bazaar?
Inspired by the Bazaar in Deva from the Mythadventure book series it is an infinite market that boasts the broadest selection of items imaginable, the saying goes “if you can’t find it here you haven’t looked long enough”. The Grand Bazaar acts as a sort of Dimension 0” and it’s pull on things unique or lost sort of “laundered” his groups existence and made them unique entities from their prime timeline counterparts, severing their ties to Homestuck’s paradox space rules and their fate as doomed timeline inhabitants.
Question 3: What’s with the Monk thing and what the balls is Timebet?
Admittedly a terrible pun on my part Timebet is a mountain range that exists as one of few permanent landmarks in the Grand Bazaar and is supposedly the first thing to ever have existed. It is not only as old as all of space time in every dimension but came into being with a massive clock built into it that has been running since time began and it is rumoured that when it finally stops the universe will unravel and time will end. To stop this fate there is an order of monks that have be tending to the clock since the beginning of time who not only keep it in working order but also live inside of it and power it by hand, pushing giant wheels around and around forever until the end of time to keep the hands of the clock moving. Monkquius ended up joining the Monks of the Clock after a significant stint as a Lord of the Bazaar during which he lost all of his close personal relationship and became a person he could no longer live with. His time with the Monks had a profoundly deep impact on Monkquius and he has the eventual goal of becoming a permanently cloistered member but before he can take that next step he feels he must finish his business with the outside world and apologize to all those he has wronged, which is why he is currently away from the Clock.
I hope that is like… illuminating for those of you confused on what the balls is going on in my story. Mostly this account was made for ERPs but the longer I play this Equius muse the more I want him to have an overarching story as well. If you have any questions/want to interact with my Muse feel free to DM me or send me asks, I love to RP :3))

re: X
2. what was your first time running a game like?
so I was..... nine? yeah, I think I was nine. and I got ahold of a copy of Dungeons and Dragons for Dummies and tried to run a game using that. I had one player and her character was a cat-rabbit hybrid. needless to say, it was a hilarious mess! but, we had a good time + I'm glad I learned properly afterwards.
4. do you have any noticeable dm mannerisms? anything you’ve picked up from ttrpg shows or other dungeon masters in your life? or common tropes, themes, or encounters that reappear across your games?
I asked my players if I have mannerisms + apparently I'm very encouraging of potentially-foolish actions. in our most recent session, I was supportive of the rogue doing increasingly risky things to try to pick the lock on a door when he was struggling to roll higher than a 3 on it. (I'd like to point out that he got it done eventually + I'm very proud of him, which is why he immediately got critically stabbed.) also quote, "you put out surfer energy with a few of your NPCs." apparently my NPCs are very supportive of adventurers living their most chaotic lives.
my first DM passed away a few years ago, and I do two things to commemorate him every time I DM. one, in every setting there exists somewhere a goblin named after him. two, all my settings include the game dragon stud poker from MythAdventures; he included it on a whim in a campaign. my bard played a hand of it with an NPC + we both rolled nat 20s, and the game was deemed "the best game of poker the world never saw," which I thought was really cool. for the rest of that campaign, my bard got a bonus to card games + poker checks. so it's had a soft spot in my heart ever since that incident. :)
I also confer with one of my favorite DMs (hi @jaz-fireforge! :D) when I've got ideas about worldbuilding + magic items because he has great wisdom that I like to borrow when I can. I also borrow ideas from his magic item blog (@fantasticalrealmsandlands) because he's written so many good concepts + short stories there.
10. what is something your players do that makes your job easier or livens up the table in a way that you appreciate from the gm seat?
I love listening to my players theorize about what's going on. sometimes they're even right! I also love hearing their trains of thought that lay out how they got to the conclusions they did, because sometimes they're right + I write in whatever they think up. I'll never tell what's what tho. that's my secret to keep. :)
I also love that they talk shit to my NPCs during fights! it makes deciding who to attack so much easier. :)

ONE ( ALIAS / NAME ): Halide
TWO ( BIRTHDAY ): September
THREE ( ZODIAC SIGN ): Virgo
FOUR ( HEIGHT ): 5'11″
FIVE ( HOBBIES ): Videogames, music and roleplay, in about that order.  Whiiiiich might be why y’all don’t see much of me.
SIX ( FAVOURITE BOOKS ): The Hobbit will always be my actual favourite, even if it’s supposed to be a kids book.  Used to be big on the Mythadventure series, too, but that’s quite some time back.  The Dune Prequels were also pretty fun.
SEVEN ( LAST SONG LISTENED TO ): The Animus Bell, cuz I  love me some TAZ : Balance.
EIGHT ( LAST SHOW WATCHED ): The Venture Brothers
NINE ( INSPIRATION FOR MUSE ): Way the heck back when I had more free time and less full time job and house maintenance, I was making an MSPA fan adventure.  Jack started off in that as the Punk, who was to be the protagonist.  Lisa and Phil also came along from that, though Zack was an invention during the flarp 1.0 times.  Even after that ground to a halt, I kept playing her on tumblr and on flarping, along with Reef (wherever they’ve got to now), and just didn’t stop.
TEN ( MEANING BEHIND YOUR URL ): Ignition before cognition - arson without thinking.  Kind of how Jack used to roll, back when everything was a monster or an opponent.  Now she’s a bit more chill and thoughtful about things, and significantly less edgy about making a fire out of anything in her path.  There was also an OC I made along the way by the name of ignition who kind of got wrapped up in her whole music and rebellion deal.
