Kids in the Archive: Episode 10

welcome back to kids in the archive! to celebrate my college graduation + KITA's 10th installment + finally honor the request i received from @oliviaskithworld multiple months ago (thank you for your patience!) today i'm going to be showcasing the classic s1e3 sketch "Citizen Kane"

even if there are other sketches that i would choose as my personal favorite, i respect "citizen kane" so much as a feat of comedic timing. the premise and dialogue are funny enough, but what puts them over the top is the perfect rhythm kevin and dave establish - fast-paced dialogue that's occasionally repetitive in its text but each repetition leads to escalation in the performance.

Citizen Kane: June 3rd 1989

I actually have two copies of the script for Citizen Kane: both dated 06/03/89, and nearly identical, to each other and to the version of the sketch that aired. There really aren't many differences to point out: some sentences are shorter or longer for the purpose of timing, and there is one specific line missing from the "white" pages that's present in the "pink" pages

i assume the version i have may not be a first draft - this was likely a scene performed at the rivoli for years before making it to the screen. or perhaps this scene was mostly created via improv, so the first time on paper was less an act of creation and more documenting what already existed. the only "big" changes are removing a section of brief physical comedy before picking up the newspaper (which was not being held by another customer).

honestly, as much as i wish i could've honored this request in a timely manner, the wait has allowed this episode to be so much better. this could have been it. i would have had to stretch these tiny differences into 3 bullet points because i just couldn't show you how the sketch evolved. except, as i write this on december 21st 2024, now i can. but we have to push a bit further...

Citizen Kane: ~2002

the kids in the hall tour-film "tour of duty" was unavailable to stream for most of this year before finally being reuploaded by a fan in november. i've previously put out a full essay with general thoughts on tour of duty, but let's examine the show's version of citizen kane.

tour of duty's "citizen kane" barely changes, especially compared to some of the other sketches in this show. sure, the words don't always line up exactly and the rhythm is a bit slower (a product of enunciating for a large theater vs recording a sketch for television), but most changes are physical. in the original sketch, a fake-arm was made for dave foley for the purposes of stabbing his hand. in this one, a prop-knife was used for the effect, freeing up both hands for motioning. most notably, this version ends with dave falling out of his chair and flipping 360 degrees before landing on the floor.

immediately following the sketch is a transitional scene with bruce and mark, where they essentially replicate the "citizen kane" bit of forgetting a name and refusing to admit you're wrong, only this time they're trying to remember the name of the sketch they just watched. it's cute.

Citizen Kane: November 25th 2024

so that's all well and good, but still not a lot of differences to parse through. what would it take for them to take citizen kane in a completely different direction?

well, what if 22 years later the kids in the hall reunited to put on a show in support of paul bellini's medical expenses, but dave foley wasn't able to attend due to pneumonia and the other kids barely had time to rehearse?

a high-quality version of the full show will be available in the new year, but recently i found a fan's uploads of a few iconic sketches from the november 2024 show, including the perfect finale to my citizen kane post, because oh boy did they go off-script. for starters, the original "citizen kane" as uploaded onto youtube is 4 minutes and 16 seconds. the "tour of duty" version (not counting bruce and mark's tag) is just under 6 minutes long. the november 2024 version is NEARLY TEN MINUTES LONG

and uniquely i am actually in a position to explain how these changes happened: scott was chosen to take over dave's part in the sketch the day of the show. they added mark walking on as "constable bobby" as a way to acknowledge dave's absence (and i was actually riffing with mark, kevin, and scott when they decided the character's name. in rehearsal, mark improvised a bit about his character going undercover as a teenager). but scott responding to kevin's "was it citizen kane?" with "yes"? bruce walking on as another officer? kevin kissing scott's forehead when scott apologized for forgetting his line? that was all truly improvised, and i was standing backstage watching it happen.

prior to the show, citizen kane was one of the sketches scott was the most nervous about since it's actually quite difficult to memorize: so much of the comedy relies on repetition and timing. i've probably watched the sketch more times in the past year than he has and even i wouldn't get it word-for-word. but once you're out there onstage, you can't beat yourself up over forgetting a line. you make that part of the gag, and suddenly the sketch becomes citizen kane on top of citizen kane: a sketch about someone forgetting something and ignoring their friend's corrections becomes about scott forgetting his lines and ignoring kevin's corrections.

there's no way the kids in the hall could've replicated everything about citizen kane on the evening of november 25th 2024: the sketch was at least 35 years old, it was being performed with minimal sets and costumes in a 1500-seat theater, and the person whose comedic voice it most represented wasn't around. but in my opinion, citizen kane 2.0 reflects exactly what a live version of a pre-existing kids in the hall sketch should be: using the well-known framework as a basis for improv while still being grounded to the important beats. this attitude carried over into the night's other sketches, even ones which didn't feature dave at all like "salty ham." it gives fans new and old something new to appreciate, and allows the KITH to focus on making each other laugh. after scott got off the stage, he wasn't upset for flubbing citizen kane. he was smiling ear-to-ear, whispering to me "i forgot how fun this was". i would take this over "tour of duty" any day

or maybe i'm just saying that because i now own 2024 citizen kane's prop-knife

oh, and don't think i've forgotten the one line that changed between my two scripts, both dated 06/03/89.

"that's a hayley mills vehicle, that's not even close"

and because of scott's role in the 2024 show, i now know that's the one line HE contributed, leading me to believe the "white" pages were just kevin and dave's writing, and the "pink" pages were after the input of the other KITH on the same day.

what's your top three (or more) vale looks?

I deliberated before answering whether I want to show the objectively good looks or the ones where I personally feel crazy so I guess I'll try to balance both. Let's get into it.

1. Eyeball Mugello helmet 2011.

Is it easy on the eyes? No. Does it look truly otherworldly almost terrifying. His own blue eye on the helmet, an ode to a lifetime of being watched and reclaiming the agency in it, the red suit, the yellow motifs of gloves and kneepads.

Leathers in general are some of the most captivating looking sport protective gear and his Ducati red ones being elevated in his trademark fashion, literally I have thought about them every day since I first saw them. It comes together in my mind partly because I love his freak ass so much and partly because if a bunch of alies descended upon earth, he could pass off as a revered human warrior to them lol. To me, it's a high fashion moment ™️.

2. 63rd Venice Film Festival, 2006.

Imo Face card with credit limit that could make Mansa Musa's worldly wealth look like peanuts. Cherubic glow on his face, a vaguely mellow mischievous glint in his eyes, curls settled around his head like a laurel wreath, sideburns framing his face in the trademark hot and iconic fashion. Every red carpet photo from this day is a hit. Fae prince realness served. Imo it also seems like the type of masculinity Vale always wanted to project to the world. Don't google the rest of the outfit he was in some ugly jeans.

3. Hair Color Saga.

Self-explanatory. Cemented him as an idea as a showman in the minds of people. Did it while having fun. Loved that he was on a mission to try as many colors as possible. My personal favourite is the blue hair by far.

4. Misc. Because why not.

That time he looked like a hot dirtbag at Wimbledon and god knows how many inane rules he broke in the process. Sticking it to the man in trademark Vale style.

There is nothing that you could have done to turn back the hands of time. What’s done is done. They don’t want you to become obsessive over their spirit, but celebrate all that they’ve done and accomplished thus far. Don’t try to save everyone because everyone doesn’t need to be saved. You will never fully heal from this trauma but you will get closure. It feels like you need to move far away from where you are. It brings up too much drama and bad memories. You deserve to be in a place where you feel safe and grounded, even if it means making the move alone. Focus on moving forward from now. They will always have love for you, even in the afterlife. Even if you move on. In fact, when you start dating someone, they will pull the strings behind the scenes for the union to form.

Pile Three: Hello, Pile Three! This is exactly who you think it is. If you have been smelling certain scents or have seen things randomly fall, then this is definitely for you. Are you going to look at them differently? I feel like they had a bit of a reputation, but they’re highly misunderstood. They want you to focus on making peace with who they were. Don’t try to justify their mistakes/choices. It is what it is. Instead, focus on more important things like attaining your goals in the physical realm. Some of you may be in the gym using it as a coping mechanism. Make a goal so that you can beat your PR. Something about your childhood is significant here. Unfortunately, I feel like some of you were victimized as a child by this person and because of that, you don’t know how to view this person through an objective lens. It makes you feel guilty because you feel like you should be focused on the good stuff. You have a complicated relationship with this person, even after death. I am channeling this book called ‘All Boys Aren’t Blue’. The author opens up about an inappropriate relationship he had with his cousin and he addresses his cousin with respect, but still holds him accountable for taking advantage of him. For others of you, I feel like this person is sorry for exposing you to the wrong crowd. I heard “the secret is out”. At some point in their life, they stopped caring about themselves and in return, this affected those around them. They want you to find room in your heart to forgive them. It will be a long and complicated journey, but they have hope.

Do not isolate yourself; even if it means talking to two family members, please keep in contact. It feels like this person was a bit of a mystery. So, you should ask about their history. Get in contact with people who were close with them and get to the bottom of their story. They want you to make an altar for them, so you can connect with them. It will make all the difference in the world, love.

Favorite Nami outfits?

I love Nami's style and I think that if I started mentioning all the outfits I like, I would never finish this post, so I'll try to make a top 5/10!!

1- Whole Cake Island (1st dress)

Look at her go!!! This is by far my favorite Nami outfit. Perhaps it's just that WCI is my favorite arc, but I just love her. I love the Hansel and Gretel energy. I love her little hat. I love the ribbon on her back. I love the colors. I love her silly hair. I love her. And she wears it in one of my favorite scenes in the whole show, so of course I love her outfit here.

2- Film Red (1st Outfit)

Literally the lesbian flag, she couldn't be more obvious. The closet is glass. 100% something I'd wear. I love the summer vibes. I love the glasses. The lil drawings my beloveds. The earrings? The boots? The shirt around her waist? The top? The hair???? I absolutely love this!!

3- Wano-Egghead

She looks absolutely stunning! Once again, literally something I'd wear. This is probably in my closet. I love the colors! I love the overall! I love her undone hair! I just love her. I'm so sad it's an outfit that doesn't last longer.

4- Whole Cake Island (3rd dress)

It looks so comfy and soft!! I need this dress. It's just so cute,, And she looks gorgeous with her braids and undone hair and,,, I just love her WCI outfits. They live in my head rent-free. Also, she matches Zeus with this one and I love it.

Mission Impossible Rant ? Part 1

had a breakdown and watched all 7 (seven) Mission Impossible movies over the course of *checks watch* three days? Read more for an unhinged rant. Or scroll away. Don't care either way cause life is pointless etc etc

MI:1 - The beginning. The oldest of the bunch. And just like all elder siblings, this one's stoic as hell. Ethan Hunt is introduced to us as this charismatic, cocky agent, out for chaos. Movie looks like it's going to be yet another generic action thriller. Except- his entire team dies (Well, not all of them- more like most of them). Thus begins a noir drama of sorts and honestly? It still holds up. It is paced perfectly, has those late 90s over-the-top action sequences and is a good time all around.

2. MI:2- So, this is where it gets interesting. For some background trivia, let me tell you why this movie's existence is interesting as hell. Up until MI:2, Tom Cruise has never participated in a sequel. People were wondering if he ever would, and sure enough we soon got MI:2 . MI:2 can be best described as a Woo- fever dream of sorts. The only things I can remember now are Thandiwe Newton, pigeons (and doves?) and a cliff climbing. It is the weakest of the bunch in my opinion.

3. MI:3- Lack of critical reception to MI:2 led to a change in directors. Tom Cruise ends up watching Alias and falls deeply in love with JJ Abrahms. JJ has a whole new aesthetic for the franchise. And action!

The entire ending of MI:2 is forgotten. No, seriously, this one begins with Ethan's engagement party to a random girl. He has taken a step back from spying, and is just chilling about- mostly teaching the craft to other agents. Keri Russel is one such agent, and when she gets kidnapped, Hunt springs into action. Russel is killed (wasted Keri Russel imo- go watch The Americans) , Hunt gets married, his wife gets kidnapped and nearly killed- this one's a doozy. Philip Seymour Hoffmann (RIP) is exemplary as a villain though.

Another highlight is Benjamin "Benji" Dunn. More on this later.

4. MI- Ghost Protocol- Keeping in with the let's- get- a- new-director- tradition, this one has Brad Bird at its helm. Bird hasn't directed any live action movies at this point, but he does have more than a decade's experience with animated material (The Incredibles, Ratatouille).

Honestly, this is my absolute favourite of the bunch. This film has everything- the iconic Burg Khalifa sequence, great dialogue, AMAZING pacing. The supporting cast have this incredible chemistry with each other. And this one has humour too! (most of the credit due to Benji, played by Simon Pegg).

Absolutely everything goes wrong in this movie and that's why it slaps. The tension is palpable in almost all scene. This movie is the one that revitalizes the franchise. It only gets better from here.

Voiceplay Visuals - Time Warp

When I was considering the concept of doing a few "bonus posts" during my 12 Days Of Christmas In July miniseries, I was like "oh I am absolutely doing a post for Time Warp!" and so here we are!

Time Warp was released on the 14th of October, 2023 (last year), and is what the group has referred to as a "Biggie" video. What this means it's that it's mostly like a VoicePlay Mini, but it's longer than a minute, and uploaded as a proper video on the channel (other "Biggies" include Wellerman and Peaches). So yeah, it's not a full-length cover of Time Warp (one can only dream!), but it's still more than we would've gotten from just a standard Mini! The arrangement was a collaboration between Rob Dietz, Geoff, and Eli, and the video and creative direction were both just left to Eli. And this cover/video features the awesome Ashley Diane! Anyway, idk how long or short this post might be, but there's definitely fun things to show and talk about, so let's get into this!

Alright we're starting off the video strong, with Geoff wearing glasses and practically smouldering down the camera, SIR-!

(Seriously he already looks so lovely and handsome most of the time anyway - the fact that glasses make him look even better is frankly just unfair)

Oh and you might notice a sign in the far background (the blue-green thing) that says "Oviedo Mall". That's where VoicePlay films most of their Minis (and "Biggies"), and it's also where Pattycake Studios is located!

Layne is definitely repping Columbia with that shiny gold jacket, and also hey it's a rare case of seeing (what I'm assuming is) his natural hairstyle! (Layne had curly hair in Jingle Bell Rock as well but I completely forgot to mention it).

Cesar is wearing a Rocky Horror Picture Show shirt, nice (I am fully unsurprised that he's a fan of it, lol), and Eli's wearing the same jacket that he did in the video for Good 4 U a couple years ago!

The main reason I wanted to do a VoicePlay Visuals post for this one: the dancing! (And I was totally dancing along with the first chorus here, couldn't help myself!)

Oh and speaking of the dancing, I gotta show my appreciation for the fact that Cesar and Ashley are doing the choreography properly (well, mostly - the "step to the right" bit should include matching hand motions!). E.g. having the right timing on "bring your knees in tight" (you don't do it immediately!)

I wanted to get a clear shot of Ashley before I gave proper appreciation for her sparkly sequined top! Very cute!

The Soulmate Curse: Chapter 4

Charlastor strikes again! Its budding but its there! Alastor is an insistent little deer man. A bit more drama. Their little soulmate bond grows a bit. You'll see. They have no idea XD

I mean it helps them both a bit. And harms a little bit. Charlie is trying so hard to be a ray of sunshine.

Husk let out a sigh and knocked back another bottle of whiskey, “Who fucking knows, Angel…” he mumbled. 

Angel pouted and continued scrolling on Sinsigram. All the rage was soulmates and how people were murdering their own soulmates. Charming. His mismatched eyes were cloudy with a sort of solemness as his eyes shifted to Husk. Angel ran a loving finger over their soulmate chain. So much for soulmate clicking.

“Why hello there, Husker and Angel Dust!” A blur of Alastor’s face sprouted out of nowhere right over Angel Dust.

“FUCK!” Angel screamed. His phone came crashing down on his face. “Ow…” Angel glared at the grinning Radio Demon and rubbed his wounded face. “Hey, asshole. Not cool.” 

“Hmmm…” Alastor glanced around the room seemingly ignoring Angel’s remarks. “Where’s Charlie?” he asked in a very innocent voice. 

Husk let out a laugh, “Wouldn’t you like to know?”

Alastor let his grin widen. Each step towards the uncaring Demon Cat made his heels click against the wood. “I’m her business partner. It's the second time she’s missed a trust activity.” A bite was in his voice.

Husk glanced warily up at the seething Radio Demon. The radio dials weren’t flickering thankfully. Without letting go of eye contact, he finished the bottle and slammed it down. “You know, you barely show up to these activities.”

Angel decided to sit up for once in his life. “Yeah…why do you now care, Mr. Tall, Dark, and Creepy?” Husk flashed the adult film star a warning glance.

Alastor spun around to face Angel, his neck craning above the adult film star. “Well…” he began, he stretched his fingernails. “If you don't stop flapping that tongue of yours, I’ll cut it out.” Alastor grinned.

Angel threw his phone to the side and stared back at the Radio Demon. He puffed out his fluffy chest, running his long fingers through his white hair and said in that iconic sultry voice of his, “Hmm…what’d you say deer daddy?” Alastor went ramrod straight. “If I don’t please you enough with my little sweet tongue, you’ll cut it out?” Husk rolled his eyes. Angel stood up slowly, inching closer and closer to the Radio Demon. He flashed his golden tooth. “Don’t worry, deer daddy, I’ll make sure it–” 

Alastor actually stumbled back a step and his eyes were wide. A deer in the headlights. Angel grinned. “That isn’t necessary, thank you,” Alastor took another step back before seating himself. Angel inched closer, waving a tantalizing finger at the Radio Demon. Alastor gritted his teeth, “One step closer and I’ll personally ensure you’re castrated for the rest of eternity.”

Angel threw up his hands, “Okay, Jesus, dude. Fine,” He plopped back on the couch. His hands covered up his crotch. The Radio Demon hummed a little tune as he twisted his hand and played with the fire in the fireplace. No one made a comment even as he made the flames stretch and thin, grow larger and smaller.

It was past 1pm when the other residents started stumbling into the main lobby. Niffty was mindlessly scurrying around taking futile stabs at nasty little insects. A few of those times, Alastor would suspend the bugs in midair and let her have at it. Vaggie came in late and brought a little book on self-defense (quite pathetic). Lucifer for a long time stayed at the top of the stairs warily staring at NIffy. Wherever she threw a glance his way, he would duck behind the banister. Alastor scoffed.

Alastor was right in the middle of sipping a lovely spearmint tea when it hit him like a thousand careening bullets. An overwhelming bubbly feeling crawled its way up his chest. A sincere smile was pulling at the corner of his lips which he immediately stifled. A floaty feeling took hold of his body, he was flying too high, he thought it was only a matter of time before he would plummet.

Good God, am I having a heart attack? No, that was impossible! Alastor was dead, very dead. What the hell was this feeling? The tea he was swallowing was working its way up his gullet. No, no, no, not here. The others hadn’t noticed, Angel was too focused on his phone, Husk on his whiskey, Lucifer on Niffty, Niffty on the bugs, Vaggie on her stupid self-help book–

There it was again. A sickening passion setting his veins on fire. His claws dug into the armrest. Ugh, God it was so horrible. This bubbly feeling. It was like something else had taken over his body, over his emotions. Something was pulling at him, seeing if it undid enough threads he would come crashing down. 

Alastor’s hand went to his chest and his other hand shakily held the mug. “HEY GUYS!” Her sweet voice rang throughout the lobby. It had been two days since he had heard her lovely, no, silence–

Everyone’s heads swiveled beside Alastor who kept his eyes trained on the fireplace. Perhaps if he lost himself in the flames enough this stupid strange emotion would burn away into the nothingness from whence it had come. To no one’s surprise, Charlie, the Princess of Hell, almost came tumbling down the steps. A stream of amateurly colored papers followed in her wake like some sort of bizarre parade. 

Alastor saw Charlie spare a glance in Vaggie’s direction. Vaggie barely looked up. His brows shot up and his heart jumped. Hm, trouble in paradise? He seriously hoped not. The last thing he wanted was Charlie turning to him to be her beloved soulmate or whatever. 

Charlie smacked her main paper on an easel set up in the lounge and stuck a thumbtack through it. “TA-DAAAA!” She kicked up one of her heels and she spread her arms. Her smile was far too blinding. These feelings intermixed with her positive demeanor was starting to become too much. Why had he come in the first place? Where had these strange foreign feelings come from anyway? Alastor didn’t dare let a grimace cross his face. 

Angel furrowed his eyes and craned his neck forward, “Uh…capture the flag?”

Husk groaned, “You gotta be fucking kidding me…”

Today's poll includes multiple songs off the soundtrack for the movie, Flashdance. We've seen songs from soundtracks featured on these polls, with You Light Up My Life and Evergreen coming to mind (plus songs from actual musicals). But instead of just diegetic ballads and showtunes, now we're seeing more songs marketing themselves around their connection to the films they were written for. As music videos are being shot more like movies and movies are being shot more like music videos, the meeting of these two worlds makes sense. Especially when music videos start to include actual clips from the movies, MTV was the place to get a wide audience for your music.

But not everyone could see the benefits right away. While MTV kicked off with a bang, their initial video rotation infamously featured no Black acts. The network's explanation was to insist that the exclusion wasn't based on race, but rather MTV's status as a "rock station".

1983 also marks the 25th anniversary of Motown Records and a television special (Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever) was broadcasted to mark the occasion. While the night is marked by more legends than I can list off, the notable performance for this blurb was Michael Jackson. After performing with the Jackson 5 for the first time since the 70's, Michael Jackson performed his new solo hit, Billie Jean. This number marks the public debut of the moonwalk, the musician's signature dance move that arguably cemented his status as a pop culture icon.

In hindsight, it feels ludicrous that an artist like Michael Jackson was initially unable to get on MTV. Fortunately, people at the time thought it was ludicrous as well. Both Rick James and David Bowie called out the network years before (with James being especially vocal in critiquing MTV for its exclusion of Black artists). But allegedly, Michael Jackson's record company found a way to get Billie Jean on the channel. To quote Walter Yetnikoff, the president of CBS Records at the time:

“I said to MTV, ‘I’m pulling everything we have off the air, all our product. I’m not going to give you any more videos. And I’m going to go public and fucking tell them about the fact you don’t want to play music by a black guy.’” (x)

Whether in response to Yetnikoff or not, Billie Jean aired on MTV March 10th, 1983, making it the first music video by a Black artist to be featured in heavy rotation on the channel. Later this year, the cinematic possibilities of the music video would be pushed further with the 13 minute video for Thriller. Michael was already a star without the push from MTV, and with how popular his videos were, it could be argued that MTV needed Michael as much if not more than he needed them. But while MTV's problems with race and representation were far from over, this moment helped pave the way for many other Black artists who will become iconic figures on the channel.

1996: It gets Better. Or in some cases, retroactively worse.

I really honestly referred to 1996’s chart as a “palate cleanser”! Not “an absolute emotional minefield”? Not “you’re going to be crying in your car while listening to ‘Name’ by The Goo Goo Dolls”?!

I was excited when I wrote up to 2022 chart to report that fully 10% of the top 100 that year were Spanish-language tracks. But even back in 1996, we had two songs on the chart in Spanish: #98, the cringe classic “Macarena” by Los del Rio, and the number ONE song of the year, *squints at notes*: “Macarena- Bayside Boys Remix”.

My grasping claim at authenticity is that I first heard this song in Mexico City at a discotheque. I was the girl they pulled up onto a chair to demonstrate learning the basic dance movements- I assume it’s standard to choose the ugliest duckling for this honor? Later, when I was getting hit on less than my friends, someone offered me the condolence that it was just because I’m not blonde. They were right to offer up this worldly advice!

I count it among the saddest realizations of my adult life that when Darius Rucker says that the dolphins made him cry, he meant the football team. I had instantly conjured an adorable vignette where Darius goes to Sea World and the dolphins don’t scare him, exactly, but he is very startled when one comes out of the tank to nuzzle him. There are tears. A close second is the realization that Quad City DJs do not in fact rep the quad cities of Davenport, Bettendorf, Rock Island, and Moline.

Song of the Year: Is it reasonable to say anything other than Macarena? “You Oughta Know” by Alanis Morissette is on the chart, but I think it’s more correct to talk about it in the context of 1995. Still, it’s an all-timer. And Flea performed the bassline- listen to it now with that on your mind!

“California Love” by 2Pac, Roger, and Dr. Dre could be that Song of the Year candidate. This isn’t a 1996 memory by any means, but in 2014 I moved to Orange County, California from Maryland. I moved for my spouse’s job, and I moved not only without having my own job lined up, but completely sight-unseen. No one, myself included, had even considered that I should see the place I was moving to. Shortly after moving, my friends Nadia and Nathan visited, and I remember riding around LA in their rental car when this song came on. This was maybe the first moment after my move when I thought, yeah, this might be ok.

Song that may have actually aged well: “Missing” by Everything but the Girl

Forgotten Gems: “1-2-3-4 (Sumpin’ New)” by Coolio and “Woo Hah!! Got You All in Check” by Busta Rhymes. I wasn’t actually that aware of hip hop music in 1996. I was no longer listening to the Top 40 station (KQKQ Sweet 98 in Omaha) but instead was listening to whichever current iteration of the “alternative” station. We thought we were cool, but it turns out “alternative” was just exclusionary.

Similarly, the “Waiting to Exhale” soundtrack mostly left no trace in my mind, but I can also blame that on not being in the right age demographic. It’s all over the 1996 chart, though, and rightly so.

“Give Me One Reason” by Tracy Chapman and “Hook” by Blues Traveler: both of these songs bring back specific memories of trying to relate to my mother by offering her a current popular song that I thought she could find acceptable. She didn’t take the bait either time.

“Gangsta’s Paradise” by Coolio and L.V. The first R-rated movie I saw in the theater was “Dangerous Minds.” I lied and said that I saw “To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar” which somehow was more acceptable than a film about the power of teaching! I’m sure I was shifty about my lie, which was chalked up to premarital sex, but it’s definitely on brand in retrospect.

I’m including the video for “Ironic” by Alanis Morisette as a favorite iconic video from the 1996 chart, but it’s also a trap I’ve set to see if anyone will jump into the comments without reading the whole essay to push their glasses up and offer their opinion on which lyrics of the song do or do not embody the concept of irony.

Godzillathon - The Showa Era

This month I started a Godzillathon, a series of reviews of all the King of the Monsters movies from Toho Studios. In my Letterboxd you have the reviews with more detail (in Spanish), but since I just finished with the Showa era, I thought I'd share some brief comments here.

Godzilla (1954) - ★★★★★ (10/10)

The original. An undisputed classic. A masterpiece. Terrifying, embracing its idea of the monster as a metaphor for the horror of the atomic bomb and its consequences. Top 5 of the whole kaiju eiga genre.

Godzilla Raids Again (1955) - ★★ (4/10)

In hardly less than a year we went from metaphorical horror to the most generic monster mash. It wouldn't be a problem if it weren't so bland/boring. Tremendous downgrade. Anguirus is cool, though.

King Kong vs. Godzilla (1963) - ★★★ (6/10)

Basically a Kong movie with Godzilla as a guest antagonist (the real villain is capitalism). It has things that have aged very badly (the racial representation and use of blackface) and unbalanced pacing. It is saved by its last ten minutes. The US cut adds extra hilarity.

Mothra vs. Godzilla (1964) - ★★★★ (8/10)

Mothra is made of awesomeness. Godzilla is a charismatic asshole. Once again, the real villain is capitalism. The main metaphor gives way  now to a satire of the Japanese economic boom of the 1960s and its ecological impact. Fun from start to finish.

Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster (1964) - ★★★½ (7/10)

We lose the satire and social commentary, but we gain an iconic villain and embrace space opera and sci-fi without qualms. Fun monster mash and Godzilla's first step in his transition to an anti-hero status. He's still a jerk, but he's our jerk.

Invasion of Astro-Monster (1965) - ★★★ (6/10)

The spectacle wins out over any subtext, which has all but disappeared. It introduces what will be a recurring element of alien invaders making use of giant monsters. Memorable for being overall a fun film and perhaps the craziest of what we've seen so far, but not much more. Also, Godzilla dances.

Ebirah, Horror of the Deep (1966) - ★★½ (5/10)

Originally a Kong movie rewritten for Godzilla and it shows. Tropical jungle island adventure. Villains that could come out of a Bond movie. Godzilla in full heroic mode. GIANT LOBSTER. Fun, but doesn't leave much of a lasting impression, although Ebirah has its fans.

Son of Godzilla (1967) - ★★ (4/10)

Not as horribly bad as I feared, but not a good movie. Horrible design decisions, unremarkable antagonists (except for the giant spider because it’s a giant spider), and abusive monster parenting. It tries to squeeze in a bit of environmental commentary, but it's dull and infantilizing.

Destroy All Monsters (1968) - ★★★ (6/10)

The Avengers of the franchise. I wanted to like this movie more than I did. Two very uneven first and second acts of a story with a recycled plot (aliens + monsters under mind control) saved by a resolution that is memorable as fuck. You almost feel sorry for Ghidorah. Almost.

All Monsters Attack (1969) - ★½ (3/10)

The absolute low point of the franchise. It's like a bad dream/recap episode. Tries to do some slice of life with the monsters as a metaphor for childhood anxieties in a plot that shoehorns gratuitous kidnappings into it. Good intention but disastrous execution.

Godzilla vs. Hedorah (1971) - ★★★★ (8/10)

A return to form! Hedorah is an excellent metaphor for uncontrolled pollution and contamination. A bit dissonant, with Godzilla as a kid friendly hero (he flies!) in a terrifying plot, with body horror, human casualties in large numbers and an apocalyptic feeling. And that poor kitty...

Godzilla vs. Gigan (1972) - ★★★ (6/10)

Recycled plot of aliens (cockroaches!) using a giant monster. AGAIN. But it's fun and Gigan is memorable as one of Toho's most extravagant kaiju designs: anthropomorphic alien chicken with cool visor instead of eyes and knives. How many knives? All the knives.

Godzilla vs. Megalon (1973) - ★★ (4/10)

What the fuck. Total drift to Saturday morning cartoon standards, but poorly done. It's basically a pilot episode for Jet Jaguar, which is endearingly crappy. The plot? The usual, but swap aliens for ancient underwater civilization. Godzilla looks almost too adorable. Note, it actually has a message: nuclear testing is bad.

Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla (1974) - ★★★½ (7/10)

Twentieth anniversary and introduction of an iconic villain! And the plot... Guess what the plot is? Take a fucking guess. The aliens are now gorillas, just because. At least it's well executed, it's good fun. Also, King Caesar. I like King Caesar, even though he feels like a discount version of Mothra at times. Surprisingly gory in the fights.

Terror of Mechagodzilla (1975) - ★★★½ (7/10)

Direct sequel to the previous one. The end of the Showa era is a fun but a bit uneven film. Too much focus on a boring Titanosaurus (one of Toho's blandest kaiju designs). Good balance of monster fights and a human plot with touches of humanism and trans-humanism, and a tragic sacrificial ending.

Jaws - what could i possibly fucking say. just awesome. it's so iconic that it loses what would have made it scary and now it's like a comfort movie to me

My Favourite Steve Characters

It's September 1st, also known as Steve Pemberton's birthday! I did one of these lists for Reece's birthday, and I wanted to do one for Steve too because I feel like not enough people talk about his amazing acting

These are in no particular order

Tony Martin - The Interrogation Of Tony Martin

This film was originally on Channel 4 and can now be found on Netflix. It's a verbatim piece about the true story of Tony Martin and why he killed two young boys that intruded on his home. Steve manages to be both cold and unsettling and surprisingly sympathetic in the role, everything he does is subtle and refined to produce an incredibly realistic performance

Trevor - Love's Great Adventure

I don't think I'll ever stop singing the praise of Love's Great Adventure, people overlook it because it doesn't have a dark twist but it's honestly one of the best episodes of the entire series! Steve Pemberton delivers such a raw performance that it left me wishing there was a spin-off series! The entire episode is beautiful, and Trevor is a huge part of the reason; I could praise Steve's ability to dig up such pure, unbridled feeling in every character he plays for ages!

Dr Bessner - Death On The Nile (2004)

I'm a sucker for a good Agatha Christie, especially Poirot, so finding out that Steve Pemberton was in one of the remakes made me very excited - and, as always, he delivers. Dr Bessner is a character which may end up fading into the back of people's memories, but Steve Pemberton managed to make every scene he was in very entertaining. It goes to show that he knows how to pull focus without taking away from other cast members, a credit to both his dedication and kindness

Len - Bernie Clifton's Dressing Room

I mean, he won a BAFTA for this one, that says it all! When we first meet Len, he's portrayed as a sweet, funny man with plenty of charisma. However, as the episode continues, Steve manages to show this façade break more and more until we see to the core of a man that's ruined his life and lost his way. Steve managed to perfectly portray Len as a flawed character while simultaneously making the audience sympathise with him and want him to get the help he needs

Galen - Thinking Out Loud

NOBODY can deny Steve Pemberton's range, not after watching Thinking Out Loud. He's positively frightening as Galen, using stillness and a measured delivery to create an unnerving character - at one point, he leaned forward and I actually jumped backwards!

Pauline Campbell-Jones - The League of Gentlemen

This list wouldn't be complete with the iconic Pauline Campbell-Jones! Steve's comedic timing and delivery skills makes her one to watch, but there are also moments where we see another side to her that's unexpected yet surprisingly heartwarming. Yet another example of Steve's fantastic range giving even the most comedic characters depth

Joe - The Last Weekend SPOILERS BELOW

Like Thinking Out Loud, this episode has a very controversial ending. But I want to step away from that for a moment (might make a post about it at some point, I'm not sure) to appreciate how incredible Steve was in it

At first, you sympathise with Joe; he has to deal with having a terrible illness and, on top of that, his partner doesn't exactly treat him that kindly. Steve's ability to pull at the audience's heartstrings really comes into play here... but, even before the big reveal, there are subtle moments where you get the sense that something isn't quite right

And that ending! Steve completely transforms and we're left with a Joe Madison that we've never seen before - and hope we never see in real life! It's perfectly sinister and 100% one of his best acting moments in the series

Of course, these are just a few of his roles and, like Reece, he's a real chameleon that can truly play any part (even if, sometimes, it's just Pauline). Benidorm is on my watch list so I'll be getting to that as soon as possible! I hope Steve's career continues to be full of opportunities!
