Austen the cat

Jason sat on the couch in his apartment, staring at the orange and black kitten Bruce gave him two weeks ago. The kitten stared back, its big eyes full of curiosity and tilting his head while purring. Jason couldn't help but smile.

Jason: Damn it, why are you so cute? Why did he get me something so cute? This kind of makes up for all the anger I had towards him... like maybe 40%.

The kitten lets out a chipper meow while purring, nestling closer to Jason. The man stroked the sweet kittens head with a smile.

Jason: Have to remain calm, okay since we confirmed what gender you are, would you like to keep the name Austen?

The kitten lifted its head and meowed in agreement.

Jason (covering his mouth): Hn, hn, I’m lucky no one else is here. I’m going to hug you now.

Jason picked up the kitten and hugged him tightly, fighting back tears. The kitten meowed softly, as if sharing in the moment.

Jason: I love you too, little guy.

The two shared a quiet moment of connection in the apartment, the past slowly fading as new memories began to form.

Aww, he got him a pet!

Bruce (grumbling): Here happy birthday, anniversary—whatever.

Bruce slumped in front of his computer, exhaustion etched on his face. Jason opened the box cautiously, his heart racing as he gazed inside, but was met with a perfect surprise.

Jason (softly): Kitty.

A small, fluffy black and orange kitten poked its head out, glancing around before letting out a big yawn-meow. The kitten licked his nose then looked at Jason with a happy expression. Jason was so taken by the kitten’s cuteness that he nearly dropped the box in surprise.

Bruce: It wouldn't stop following be around after a mission, but Damian has enough pets. I thought you might like to keep them or have a friend that wants them.

Jason gently lifted the kitten out of the box, cradling it like a tiny baby. The cat glanced around before looking up at Jason and meowing happily.

Jason (beaming): He's mine! I'm going to love him, hug him, feed him, and give him everything he wants!

Bruce (nonchalantly): Mm-hm.

Jason: He's so cute! I’m going to name him… wait, is this a boy?

Bruce (pretending to focus on his work): Pretty sure they're a boy, but if you want, you can pick a name of a character you particularly enjoy.

Jason: Austen! How do you like that, little fluffers?

Austen the cat meowed joyfully as Jason snuggled him, receiving affectionate licks on his hand in return.

Jason: I’m going to feed you fish tacos!

He dashed out without saying thank you, while Selina and Alfred exchanged knowing smiles.

Selina: You found a stray and gave it to him? Aww.

Bruce (typing away): You could say that. I say it wouldn’t stop following me, and since Jason likes cats, I made the best decision for both of them.

Alfred (to Selina): That’s his way of confirming your guess is right—or more simply, he loves Jason enough to finally get him a cat.

Selina: That’s sweet, Bruce. You made sure to get a stray and not buy a purebred.

Bruce (calmly, yet evasively): Whatever you want to believe; I just know what I said is what happened.

Selina leaned over and kissed Bruce on the cheek.

Selina: I'm glad you made him happy, even if just for a moment.

Batman (smiling): I try.
