Yo, I saw your post about trans dudes not gendering hobbies and I want to cosign it real hard

I'm a cis dude (or whatever... wrote that long ask the other day, so you see the whatever). I do stuff like wood carving... at some point I'd like to get into blacksmithing (and a million other things)

Are those masculine hobbies? What a weird thing to even ask, they're just themselves

Carving is carving, everyone should do it

I also want to pick up the skills to make my own clothes some day. Would that be masculine if I call it tailoring or feminine if I call it sewing? It's in fact just a good skill

And I mean Doki Doki is a great game, never played it, just watched it, but what fantastic characters. Liking it isn't gendered, you're right that there's nothing wrong with you

You know, I got into MLP back in like 2011... man... people just can't... eh... no I feel you hard on how it was for you though, cause while I still really love it, I haven't watched it in years, not cause of shame or something but just cause the infinite posts on here about guys who watch it all being creeps kinda sapped my ability to enjoy it

Great show though, still recommend it, just lost my own personal ability to enjoy it other than the occasional fan art

Point is with all of this, none of it effects your gender. Shows aren't gendered, hobbies aren't gendered. Things like make up or what kinda clothes you want to wear aren't gendered

Welding, knitting a baby onesie, blue and pink, dresses or overalls... none of this has gender. Men, women, trans, cis, anyone no matter who they are, how they identify... they all belong equally in all these things... what matters is if it's a good fit for you, there's no such thing as you having to fit the right boxes for it

Easier said than done sometimes to not care what other people thing, especially if it would put you at risk; but from an internal point of view, and from how much you should value others opinions on this... do what you like, and people who don't like it can piss off

But yeah, just saw that post and wanted to weigh in

The stuff I said is true for everyone, but bring it around towards trans men in particular, there's no right way to be a trans man. You're you, you're a trans dude... job done

You get to decide what it looks like for you, but none of this stuff is gendered. You could be the most masculine guy in make up, or you could do the daintiest welding in the most feminine way, but that's just you bringing your own style to it; and just like none of these hobbies are gendered, neither is being a trans guy

Like if you're a masculine trans guy that's great, but if you're real feminine that's great too. That's stuff's just the flavoring for how you're you, none of it's what makes you a guy

It sucks that you can't enjoy MLP like you used to... But yeah, there's a big stigma around "masc looking" people with "fem aligned (to society's standards" hobbies and interests. Like I said in my post, I'm a huge anime fan and I've seen so many cis men get shit for being creeps because they had like their favourite female characters from an anime or manga as their phone wallpaper, or because they had figures and posters, for people it can only be for "gross, NSFW purposes" when it's just people enjoying fictional characters.

And I hate when you say that and people are like "well IF the men in fandoms weren't ALWAYS CREEPS" and it's like: you're talking about the loudest crowd, not the majority. I'm not a big fan of fandoms in general because people tend to be too intense about the media, for me at least. But that's the point of a fandom and there's good and bad in it. It's not a gender thing.

I remember watching a little video about the MLP fandom and finding some things that came out of it like the huge conventions and fanfic and overall creativity so so great !! and then the youtuber introduced the more NSFW, weird part of the fandom and said "I think that the reason why men tend to sexualized fictional characters in shows and any medias is because it's the only way they ever learned to enjoy female characters. As a girl, I can relate to the characters that are girls because they experience similar things to me, but to men, the only relatable and enjoyable thing they can possibly get out of a female character isn't the way she's written, the things she goes through, it's just the sexual gratification she can give."

And I don't have words strong enough to say how APALLED I was by this statement like, do you hear yourself, fr ?!

But anyways, there's still a long road ahead of us for people to just be normal about men liking "unconventional" things. Or to just de-gender things in general, really.

Me???? Doing an ask????? Also depending on what's used for their significant other is what they would call them gender neutrally.

CAIT: She would undoubtedly be the type to drag her partner to wrestling matches. Like think of a post apocalyptic WWE with more blood. The adrenaline and general excitement would have her and her chridhe positively giddy. Except greasy food and a super intense make out session afterwords. They'd think the screaming would take their breath away but this is whole different kind of breathlessness.

CURIE: Oh she would be just absolutely adorable on dates. She'd want to do them the pre-war way with fancy clothes and fancy food. She'd pick up her trésor and have a bouquet of hubflowers just for them. She'd try to courtesy and kiss their hand but probably ends up tripping and they catch her but they both fall so now the air of gracefulness is gone. That's not too bad though when they're faces are inches away from each other and the shine in their eyes are from love, not just mirth.

DEACON: Prank war!!!! But not at each other, it's towards others. They'd camp out on a roof and wait for someone to walk by then unleash the buckets of water at the ready! Or maybe do the classic shaving cream slap while someone's asleep. The more uptight they are the better so getting Danse or X is the ideal, it's no fun to mess with sweethearts like Curie or Preston. After a full day of laughter they'd go watch the stars on the same starting roof and just talk. About anything and everything. The most prominent memory in his lovey's head is the way he smiled when he kissed their hand surrounded by starlight.

DANSE: He would like to take his baby somewhere quiet where it's just them. No responsibilities or annoyances just them in their little bubble of love where they can just be. He'd make a homemade dinner that would probably be steak since he's the type of guy that can only cook meat correctly but it's the thought that counts. At the end he'd take his baby by the hand and lead them to their bedroom that is now filled with flower petals and they'd cuddle because they're both tired and full from their meal.

EDWARD: Being a ghoul that's been around for awhile let's him in on some beautiful spots in the Commonwealth, so his go to would be to take his angel hiking near dusk and reach the top of the mountain/glorified hill right at sunset. A little hike isn't going to tire out anyone who lives in the wasteland, but he'd still insist to carry their things and even occasionally his angel entirely to show off his strength just a bit to see them blush in embarrassment or out of being indignant. Either way he finds it cute. They'd marvel at the sunset together and cuddle until their limbs get numb.

GLORY: She'd love to try out different weapons with her heart just because they both like the competition. They make a game out of how many cans can they shoot in a row, or "who is brave enough to actually try Tinker Tom's new toy." That one's their favourite. The winner of each gets to dare the other to do something. It's usually just a kiss, but sometimes they have a little fun and dare the other to see how fast they can make Dez angry.

HANCOCK: There is no doubt in my mind that he'd take his sunshine on dates at the club. The deafening music, chems, and nasty dancing would be right up his alley. He'd get a few drinks in them both and maybe some chems then they'd hit the dance floor and have the best time. The energy there is like nowhere else. Something he really enjoys though is watching his sunshine as they dance alone. Seeing them get close to other people while their eyes are still fixed only on him does wonders for his confidence. Plus it gives him a reason to show off if someone gets to handsey while dancing.

MACCREADY: He would take gorge (short for gorgeous, he thinks it's funny) to the arcade. Just a day filled with friendly competition and tricking the other into losing with a kiss or two would be a great stress reliever for the world they live in. They'd dance poorly on the dance dance revolution machine and after awhile they complete to see who can do the worst. He'd try to kiss them seriously a few times but neither can go without laughing because of the popcorn in one's hair, or the fact that they're in the middle of a racing game dang it! Also when they're out on dates, the rest of the gang all helps to take care of duncan and shuan (if gorge is Sole). So the ending to their date nights are always a huge sigh when they see the mess everyone left behind. That's also why they keep a camera by the door, nothing like a little blackmail of someone wearing a bunny onesie to get a few favours.

PIPER: Of course she's the type to take her honeybun to an amusement park. They'd get high off of both adrenaline and sugar. Good thing the nuka world is back in business. Her favourite would be the roller coasters even though they scare her half to death, but that's part of the fun so how could she not. If her honeybun gets scared at anytime she'll immediately let them latch onto her even though she'll be laughing the whole time. She'll find the annoyed pout cute so there's really no winning. She'd make sure to hit the ferris wheel for a kiss at the top before they leave.

PRESTON: Whatever he does for his babe is lined with sweetness and dates are no exception. He'd treat them like the royalty they are in his eyes. They'd go to a petting zoo where they have baby molerats and brahmin as well as puppies and kittens. He finds the animals cute sure, but his babe is even cuter. And when they're surrounded by all the baby animals? Cuteness overload!!! He'd probably tell them little poems about how lovely they are while they walk around just to see them smile just a tad more.

VALENTINE: A gentleman through and through, he'd do what Curie does but classier. He has the experience she doesn't and the charm to carry it out. It's nothing but flattery as soon as he sees them. "Doll I knew you were perfect but dress you up a bit and I can't even look at your radiance or my sensors will melt." Just keeps them in a continuous puddle of goo with how kind he is. He'll kiss their hand, pull out the chair during dinner, order for them, etc. He takes the lead so you can relax. Seeing them enjoy themselves brings him joy so he wants to pull out all the stops for his doll.

X6-88: X isn't the best when it comes to dates but what he does know through all his quiet observation, is what his darling likes. He'd start with making them their favourite snack, then a cuddling session where he plays with their hair until they take a nap. When they wake up he'd have a massage prepared and that just proceeds to relax them more than sleep already has. After all the knots have been thoroughly worked out of them, they'd go on a walk while it gets dark out, hand in hand. When they get hungry, X will tell them to sit while he makes dinner but no one can stop his darling from turning into an octopus when they want attention so he doesn't get a moment away from them. He has no choice but to let them help out a bit but that's just a better way of saying "I'll personally feed you during the process while you sit on the counter looking comfy and cute because I can't say no to you no matter how hard I try."

In many ways, Millie Bobby Brown is like every other 15-year-old. Her phone is a constant attachment (it was tucked under her legs during our interview), onesies are her favourite clothing, and she spends free time chilling with her sister, Ava, aged seven, watching Disney’s The Lion King and Matilda. But Millie has quite a few qualities that set her apart from the majority of teens, too. Most strikingly, of course, she’s a Hollywood megastar. Netflix smash Stranger Things made her a household name when she was just 11, and in the next year she’ll star in Godzilla vs. Kong and take the title role in Enola Holmes, playing Sherlock Holmes’ younger sister. She has more than 28 million followers on Instagram… did we mention that she’s only 15?!

And it’s not just on the big screen that she’s making waves. Millie – or Mills, as she’s called by friends and family – wants to use her platform to do good, joining the ranks of teenage activists and disrupters who’ve become a force for positive change in recent years (the mass school walkouts over climate change being a case in point). Having recently been appointed UNICEF’s youngest-ever Goodwill Ambassador, she plans to use her voice to raise awareness of issues that affect young people: lack of education, safe places to play and learn and the impact of violence, bullying and poverty.

So it comes as no surprise that she has a strong work ethic: ‘One job isn’t enough for me. I’m a prime multi-tasker. I’m also proactive. As soon as I have an idea, I’ve got to try and fulfil it as soon as possible,’ she says. Her latest venture? Launching her own skincare and beauty range, florence by mills, exclusively in Boots. Naturally, for this Gen-Z crusader, it’s cruelty-free, inclusive, and gives back. We sat down with Millie in her family home to talk about the range, gender-neutral beauty and the rise of the teenage game-changer.

Millie on… entrepreneurship ‘I came up with the idea for my beauty range when my dad and I were on a plane from Atlanta to Argentina. I was practising applying make-up – I’m a bit of a fanatic – and while I looked great, I didn’t feel great. I told my dad I felt there was a gap in the market for skincare and make-up aimed solely at young people. I knew I could create something that sat in the middle and “spoke” to people like me and my friends. Something that’s healthy and good for your skin, but also fun and still represents youth. As soon as we landed, I phoned everyone and said I had to do something of my own.’ Fast-forward two years and Millie has created a range of 15 products, including skincare and cosmetics. It has chic, matte purple packaging – her favourite colour – and a fragrance that’s a mix of lavender, rose and cucumber, her favourite scents. ‘As a young person and entrepreneur, I wanted to be taken seriously. And it’s been hard, these past six years, working non-stop to prove to myself and to society that young people deserve a seat at the table.’ The range is named after her great-grandmother, who passed away before Millie was born, ‘I’m like her. She was loud, opinionated and didn’t stop talking. She loved people and she loved the world. And that’s me.’

Millie on… ethical beauty Making sure florence by mills was vegan and cruelty-free was essential to Millie’s vision. ‘I love animals: I have two tortoises, three dogs and a cat. My favourite animal is the orca whale, and my little sister and I are always in the garden saving insects. I knew the brand had to be cruelty-free. It was a no-brainer.’ The brand also gives back through their support of the Olivia Hope Foundation*, a US charity to fund childhood cancer research, in memory of her friend Olivia, who died from a rare and aggressive form of the disease.

Millie on… gender stereotypes When it came to shaving her head for her role as Eleven in Stranger Things, Millie didn’t give it a second thought. ‘I wanted to work and had no problem with getting rid of my hair, which was long at the time. I told my mum, “It’s just hair; it doesn’t define me as a girl.” She said, “You’ll be bullied and called names.” And that’s what happened. I was called names in the street. But instead of bringing me down, it gave me the light I needed to be humble and to understand that not everyone’s life is easy. As a society, we’re conditioned to see girls with long hair and boys with short hair, but I’ve always wanted to go against that. In this respect, I’m not very good at following the rules. It was a liberating experience, and I’d do it again.’

Millie on… online bullying Using her fame to speak out about and tackle issues that are close to her, starting with cyber-bullying, is important to Millie. ‘I get bullied online a lot by older people. It can be hurtful. I’m lucky that I’m the type of person who can brush it off. I’ll often respond to a comment with something like: “I’m so sorry you live a life that’s filled with so much hate, because I live my life with so much love.” My parents have taught me to love and not to dislike and hate people.’

Millie on… teenage game-changers ‘The phrase “children should be seen and not heard”: that’s never been who I am. My parents have never said that; they’ve always encouraged and motivated me to speak up and to never stop.’ And now, as a UNICEF ambassador, she has an official capacity to do just that. ‘To have the title is such an honour. It’s an exciting time to be young, because now my voice is being heard and I can try to spark a voice in other young people. It’s amazing to be part of an organisation that gives a voice to every child.’

And she knows she has an army of teens on her side. ‘It’s not just me out there. Malala Yousafzai is one of the most inspirational young women I know. She stands up for something I feel passionate about: that every young person deserves an education. In different cultures and places, young girls don’t get the education they deserve, and I think it’s one of my biggest challenges and missions. Look at Greta Thunberg. I watched her speech to the EU, and it had me smiling all day. We’ve come a long way, but still there are those who believe young people aren’t as important. However, we’re slowly forming a generation that will be heard.’

Millie on… being a role model Take a quick scroll through Millie’s Instagram feed and you find posts that are funny, silly and full of joy. ‘My social media represents positivity. You go there to laugh and see a real human being. I don’t like posting things that don’t feel like me.’ I ask if her mum checks what she’s putting up. ‘She trusts me. She’s not on Instagram, but she’ll take a photo of me and say, “This is who you are – put that up.” She helps me stay true to who I am.’ Her parting advice to fellow teens? ‘It doesn’t matter how young you are, you still have your own voice and your opinion. 13: what’s something that made you smile today? 

I mean I smiled at a lot of dumb things on tumblr today but also a video in my anthropology lecture that showed Trobriand Islanders playing cricket with their own unique spin (dancing, chants, etc), they looked really happy and into the game and I couldn’t help but smile at that, the atmosphere was contagious

34: tell us about the stuffed animal you kept as a kid. what is it called? what does it look like? do you still keep it?

Okayyy I think the first soft toy I was given was just a teddy bear which I still have, he’s comfy to use as a pillow. But my main, favourite soft toy was a little rabbit which I believe was my second soft toy given a few days after I was born. He/She/They looked a bit like this:

except they had pink bits on their ears, paws, and feet,, do rabbits have paws? feet anyway. They were called Bun Bun (because I named them when I only just started being able to talk and couldn’t say bunny) and I don’t think I ever actually settled on a gender so. I’ll just use they/them. I slept with them every night honestly until I was maybe 10 which was when it started to make you a ‘baby’ to sleep with soft toys and also I knew that when I got married my partner wouldn’t be okay with me having a soft toy so I stopped sleeping with them (idk man, kid ideas, if I want to sleep with a soft toy and my partner has a problem they can leave). 

But at that point the pink had turned brown because I always sucked on the ears and pink. Also they’d fallen apart so much my mum made a little costume, sort of a onesie for them because they were just utterly worn down. I still have them, they chill in my room although they no longer join me in the bed unless I’m really upset. Still, I have a lot of love for that little rabbit. They’ve got no fluff left, their nose has been worn off and most people would probably consider the browning pink gross but idk. That toy’s been there since I was born, it’s just a toy but they’re meaningful to me still. Hence why this is such a long answer sdkfjhsdf.

50: what’s an odd thing you collect?

You know, I don’t really collect anything anymore. I like picking up feathers and bringing them home but that’s just for my cat because she loves bird smell sdkfjhsdf. I used to collect beer bottle caps when my Dad played soccer and I’d come down each Thursday to watch, everyone would have a drink afterwards and I’d go around the entire soccer field through all the teams that played that night to see if I could find some new bottle caps. I still have that bag of bottle caps somewhere. But he stopped playing soccer and well, no more interesting bottle caps.

I also used to collect rocks. Like, not nice crystals or pretty stones (I did that too but not the point here), I mean just a fucking chunk of stone. A whole collection of chunks of stone I stored in a red sack that was heavy as FUCK. My parents always used to try talk me out of it like ‘hey, how about this small shiny rock?’ but no I wanted the biggest fucking chunk of stone I could find and I would not settle for a tiny weak bitch stone.

I don’t think any of those is particularly odd but I can confirm I still have the heavy af sack of rocks although I went through and got rid of some. I even had a massive piece of pumice in there. But mostly just. I don’t even know where I found those massive chunks of stone but mostly just that. And part of a brick because fuck the house that belonged to I guess

You grew up in a wealthy household from Willow Creek, your parents were succesful business partners and were basically always at work. They didn’t give you any siblings either, so you were left to fend for yourself every day after school, which made you feel really lonely. Growing up in a wealthy family you were always put in expensive, designer clothes which you “have to keep nice!” Kids in your school were jealous of your pretty clothes, whilst you were jealous of their normal scuffed up clothes, especially if they had patches on it! As a teen you began thrifting clothes and making something new out of them. This is when you knew; I want to become a fashion designer! Your handmade clothes made you feel confident and people loved what you made, you made a lot of friends and had a lot of parties. The lonely feeling you had as a child has been turned around and you grow into young adulthood with your brand new outgoing personality.

You like to break the rules at disregard of your poor parents, curfews don’t bother you and discipline doesn’t really help. You also date around a lot, and have multiple partners at a time. As a last option to save your behavior your parents enroll you in the military to try to make you get some respect for people. At first you hate it but you end up loving the military life as it’s a very active career. You even end up finding love at the military base and you will eventually thank your parents for the choice they made.

Nickname(s): It’s near to impossible to create a nickname from my real first name (someone once called me ‘organic waste trash can’ as a term of endearment (it rhymes with my real name in German)- the swim team was weird, man-... I thought about adopting “Thea” as a nickname for the internet. It’s a short form of my (very Catholic) middle name.

What am I wearing: A giant plush onesie. Went to the dentist today, got a root canal removal, got bad news (have to go to a specialist because the doctor couldn’t find the last root canal. It just isn’t there...). Went home and decided to sleep through the anaesthesia wearing off. Figured I deserved to wear that onesie after such a shitty day. And I’m rocking it!

Dream job: Being independently wealthy so that I can see work as a form of entertainment/ self-fulfilment (I would never not work, even if I were a billionaire). If that doesn’t work out- teacher is fine with me.

Favourite Food: Spaghetti Bolognese. And lasagna. And spaghetti with the special tomato sauce I love to make. You know what? Let’s just go with noodles. I love noodles.

3 favorite fandoms: Oh, god, a lot of fandoms are a bit too... die-hard for me. Um... Sims, of course.
