I know everyone has their opinion on how whiny Koth is and that's a beaten dead horse but I think a huge under-looked part of it is how the game engine animates anger. take a look at Koth's face here, the famous frown which regularly puts players off-- including me at one point, because he looked absolutely livid over the news of a breakup, which startled me at the intensity of his expression.

makes you think wow this guy's emotional, doesn't it? and as a reaction to a few small conflicts, it doesn't feel good.

but then take a look at how KOTXX animates a frown on Lana and Theron:

INCREDIBLY ANGRY OVERREACTIONS.

SWTOR tends to make anger appear as a bulging of the eyes, which is a little terrifying, since it signifies extreme rage. Case in point:

I think a huge part of why Koth appears so abrasive to the playerbase is his expressions: he is overanimated and frowns with his entire face in a way that is almost comical in the same way the other companions frown *far* too much to the point of looking like TF2 caricatures, which makes him seem far pettier than he actually is.

I really believe his delivery would be helped if expressions weren't so strong and made subtler in SWTOR's engine, but he already was at a disadvantage with being made to disagree more often and therefore use that frown more than the others, which made his image worsen in player eyes. (Though his popularity shouldn't hinge on whether he agrees or not).

The point is, even as someone who likes the character even I was thrown off by how furious he looked to innocuous lines. His voice delivery was fairly neutral. His face wasn't. Would the same vehement dislike towards him exist if he wasn't animated in the same way?

What is your opinion on the theory that void is related to kirby.

I know it's sort of an old theory, but I want to know your take/opinion on it.

Is it weird? I've found that as time goes on, I'm slightly less interested in the whole Void - Kirby connection mystery! Everyone already has their theories on it. I find I care more about Kirby and what he's doing than his origins or his species or where he came from.

I find myself hoping we never find out "where" Kirby came from, ya know? How is it supposed to change things, anyway? If we did have a single origin story for Kirby, that wouldn't answer MORE questions. That would just tell a number of people with differing theories, "Oops! We've decided to lock one of THE most flexible characters in gaming (1) down to a single identity. That means your concept of Kirby is now officially WRONG!" and my goodness, that sounds like the most un-Kirby statement I can think of!

(1) Gender, personal identity, physical form, language, even age! All these things are heavily debatable with Kirby! Anyone and everyone are supposed to be able to see themselves in Kirby. The more Kirby's existence is defined by his relationship to other characters, even Void and super popular ones like Meta Knight, the less we are able to be Kirby. (Unless you make your own custom puffball based on you, I suppose. But "having an OC" shouldn't be a necessary corollary to that statement either! You should always be able to be "Kirby.")

That tangent aside...

I did re-re-review the Void Termina pause screen lore, and when it talks about the 'countless numbers of Voids in the sky, twinkling like stars,' it is easy to imagine those as a species of Kirbys.

It's hard to be definite about it, because we have two depictions of Void post-game. One as Void as we know them. The glowing marble. The other being the fan theory that Void incarnated into Classic Kirby. Which, while a great theory, doesn't really make sense? It's not like Void goes back in time to Kirby's Dream Land...

Magolor being implied to have gone back in time to Kirby's Adventure for the sole purpose of watching King Deded throw bombs at Kirby so he can copy that idea for his theme park and then hop dimensions to one in which Meta Knight decides to not fail his initiative roll and single-handedly take down the HWC, facing a computer generated clone of Dark Matter just so that he can make a party favor is bad enough! Do you really want to induce a closed time-loop grandfather pardox into Kirby?!

So I tend to stick with the interpretation that post-Star Allies Void is just Void as we know them. In which case, it DOESN'T become a Kirby, it just takes after Kirby. Which is what Void does. Takes after people. Void is an emotionless mass of emotions that copies the traits of those who have the greatest influence on its awakening. It's possible the Dark Matter forms have more to do with the kind of stuff Hyness was messing around with. And didn't that one interview state that Void's similarities to Kirby are specifically a result of Kirby being there IN THAT MOMENT? Not that it was always a Kirby-like, but that Kirby arrived just in time to have a strong influence on it.

I mean, if we're going to compare Void to Kirby and say that those similarities are heavy indicators they are the same species, what about allllllllllll the other last bosses Void takes after?

It's true that Void's emulation abilities and Kirby's copy abilities do seem to pair up naturally. And they're both round. But...

Tbh, I don't know. But I am a little tired of it being treated as a given that "Kirby is Void but happy." Rather than Kirby being a member of those countless Voids in the sty, I like to think of Kirby as the progenitor of (post-game) Void and not the other way around! I think I like the idea that Kirby is the important one in this equation!

...Having said that, I will inevitably bring about The Curse (of Dess Always Being Proven Wrong About the Lore) and next game will come out proving that Kirby IS the same species as Void XD

Link leapt straight over a pile of cardboard boxes, almost slipping in a pile of icy slush as he landed, but he managed to regain his balance and kept running, ears pricked for the shouting coming from behind him.

The wind was cold where it blew through the holes in his coat; winter had come earlier than anyone had expected, and Link hadn’t hadn’t been given anything thicker to wear.

But was finally out of that awful place, after a whole string of awful places, and could easily find a winter coat now, he was sure.

And maybe somewhere not so awful.

Link swerved around a corner and screeched to a halt, finding himself in a dead end. A tall fence blocked the end of the alleyway, but as Link looked closer, he realized he could probably climb it.

“There he is!”

Link’s heart shot straight up into his throat, and he ran over to the fence, scrambling up the freezing metal as footsteps pounded behind him.

He spared half a glance behind him as the shouts increased, hands shaking as he caught sight of several familiar faces. An eye insignia was visible on almost all of them, and he paled as he realized just how many people were chasing him. Was the whole gang after him?

Link had just reached the top when he heard a noise, and turned just in time to see something flying towards him—

Pain exploded in Link’s side and he screamed as he just barely managed to throw himself over the fence, forcing himself to create a shield right before he hit the ground. There was a small pile of snow which helped cushion the fall, and Link dropped his shield as he stumbled quickly to his feet.

He nearly went sprawling as his side burned, but he forced himself to walk, barely biting back another scream. He was not going back there, he was not letting them catch him again. The first time had been horrible, and he was sure it would be even worse if they caught him this time.

Link managed a jog, hoping the rapidly worsening storm would be too much for the men to keep chasing him. He took tricky paths and crawled through pipes, backtracking and going in as confusing of a manner as possible as the city grew more and more white with snow around him.

But finally the pain was too much.

Link finally fell to his knees as his side screamed in pain, red dripping onto the snow. Somehow he managed to drag himself to some shelter, shivering with pain and cold as he curled up behind a half-buried dumpster.

Link pressed his hands to his side, nearly shrieking when he touched the bloodied skin. His tears made it hard to see, but he could still catch the blue glow of his powers as he tried desperately to heal himself, fighting past his exhaustion and terror.

He wasn’t sure how far he got before he passed out.

The blizzard had slowed to mere flurries when Link awoke, exhausted and shivering with cold.

He stared above him at the sky, dark with clouds, but lit a faint orange by the light of the city. Every inch of him hurt, his tears had frozen on his cheeks, and every sound could be a sign of someone coming to drag him back and force him to heal for people who just wanted to hurt others.

Link sniffled, but held back his tears, still terrified someone would hear him. Instead he curled up in a ball, trying to conserve heat as he closed his eyes again. His side still hurt, but he knew he was too tired to try and heal it further.

He wasn’t sure how long he’d been lying there when a sound hit his ears, and he dragged his eyes open again, a shadow falling across his face.

Link blinked up at the figure above him, and felt his stomach drop as he saw a large, heavyset man, who looked rather menacing despite the sprinkle of flurries catching in his beard.

It was a member of the gang.

He’d been found.

Link was still weakened from healing himself, and exhausted from how far he’d run in such a short time and the fact that he’d barely had any food the past several days. The likelihood of him escaping was far too small, but he had to try. He had to.

Link shrank back, shivering wildly and looking for a way to somehow slip away despite how he could barely move.

But then the man carefully held out a hand, in a gesture that was the opposite of threatening.

Link stared at it, then flinched as the man reached into his bag, expecting a weapon to be pulled on him. But instead the man pulled out a blanket, and handed it over to Link.

Link watched in disbelief, too frozen in astonishment to take it. The man leaned closer when he didn’t move, and tugged the blanket over Link’s shoulders, warm fabric settled over his freezing arms. Link couldn’t move he was so shocked, but then the man pressed a small container into his hands as well, of something that smelled amazing and was beautifully warm.

He looked up at the man in utter shock, and a finger went to the man’s lips, something surprisingly gentle in his gaze.

“It’s a secret to everybody,” he said in a whisper, then gave Link a single pat on the head before disappearing into the night.

Link stared after him, something tightening in his throat for some reason.

But he shook it off, ignoring how he could still feel the warmth of the man’s hand on his head, and turned his attention back to the container in his lap. Delicious smells were coming from inside, and he eagerly pulled the box open.

He nearly felt like crying at the sight of the warm food inside, meat and noodles of some kind with pieces of vegetables tucked in along with it. As the warm smells drifted around him, Link decided he didn’t care if this was a trick. He hadn’t eaten barely anything all week, and the sight and smell were too much for his aching stomach to resist.

He dug in, food warming him straight from head to toe, and even when it was gone the night didn’t seem quite as cold as it had before. Link blinked drowsily as he finished, feeling warm and surprisingly content. His side didn’t even hurt as much, and he curled up in the blanket the man had given him, the fabric thin, but surprisingly soft and warm.

He knew he should probably stay awake in case the man had tricked him and tried to come back, but his exhaustion won out, and he fell asleep.

He’d figure it out tomorrow.

Worst thing ever is when a tv show has a racially diverse cast of main characters, but the fandom favorite is The White One.

Lowkey,,,, After seeing the leaked script…. I’m kinda???? Glad Uprising got canceled.

Based on what little we see, what was there was good, but I don’t think it would have lived up to the hype. Not to mention that while I’m not a fan of Legacy whatsoever, I think they made Clu a lot more complex in the movie, and it’s a damn shame that based on both the script we see, and the little screentime, Clu was whittled down to being a pretty one-dimensional villain—and THAT is why I think the second Season would have failed. It would have failed to capture what makes Clu so dangerous. He’s not JUST evil. He’s literally a copy of Flynn—he shares his traits, and that includes the good parts whether we as an audience like it or not. He came into power for that LITERAL reason (read the prequel comic it’s so interesting and it’s basically a mirror of Flynn and Clu’s perspectives of what went wrong).

One other thing Legacy did that admittedly also bummed me Uprising tossed aside was that Flynn was genuinely not a good creator. I mean it’s somewhat highlighted in scars, but not really?

I guess TLDR: It boiled Flynn down to being the Good one, and Clu to being the Bad one. Because of that, I’m not sure Uprising’s writing would have still been good if it continued with Clu coming into the picture.

As someone who has read the comic and still wants to beat up Clu 2 with a baseball bat, I can see your stance on this!

(Sorry this is REALLY LONG, bear with me because I like discussing things!)

I don’t know if it would’ve “lived up to the hype” and what that entails. Back then viewers of the show were few and far in-between, so I don’t really know how high the hype would’ve been (especially because anyone who knows legacy, knows uprising wasn’t likely gonna end in a happy ever after LMAO)

Nowadays, the expectations for stakes and what could’ve happened are larger considering how long it’s been, but who knows if it could’ve lived up to the hype back then. Maybe it could’ve. Maybe it wouldn’t have. Who knows. They never finished writing season 2, so the writers probably don’t even know lol.

Yeah, Clu 2’s not that complex in season 1 and in the movie script/unfinished storyboard. Personally, I don’t care much for Clu’s lack of complexity in the first season, mostly because he was not a focus at all. More a symbol.

Also, uprising shows brief glimpses of the view programs have of him, mostly Tron’s, so it makes sense we don’t see outside of that view. I do understand your point, though. I’d love for his ‘good’ characteristics to shine for a bit, to show how he got into power, but I believe that just wasn’t able to be shoved into season 1 (there was already so much they needed to establish in the early episodes, and after that they had so many villains to work with)

I don’t believe they didn’t plan on showing Clu 2’s ‘good’ side, but I’ll also be one to admit that I wouldn’t mind, because we’ve got legacy and betrayal if you like that perspective of him.

Same goes with Flynn: the show Isn’t about him, having time devoted to showing how he isn’t perfect isn’t Needed if there’s an entire movie that showcased that imo.

Uprising uses its characters when needed in the story; Scars wanted to use flashbacks to show Tron’s downfall from protector to prisoner, so that Had to have involved his past working with Flynn and Clu 2. Besides that, there’s little reason to show Flynn in this season, nor later seasons (because he just stayed in his cave for the most part?)

I don’t think he’s necessarily shown as a good creator in Scars, because he clearly cares more about the future than the life programs live on the grid, but it wasn’t shown in an obvious manner.

Maybe they were going to show Flynn more in other ways like him getting involved in the revolution, maybe not, but I wouldn’t want him to be reintroduced just to show how he wasn’t perfect. I believe he should be used in the story when applicable. STILL, I understand the argument!!

It’s a pretty interesting take overall, even if I don’t entirely agree with the arguments!! :)

My opinion on Brandon Sanderson was formed when I was reading Mistborn back when I was in college

I was happy about the potential of having a really prolific, established, mostly well-regarded new SFF author to read! Cautiously happy, because SFF Has Burned Me Before, but hopeful

I liked the beginning of Mistborn! I really did. I liked the protagonist a lot, and went ahead and dug in

here's the thing though: my first loyalty is almost always to female characters, esp in SFF, because way too much SFF (especially older SFF) has treated female characters so poorly

And as I kept reading Mistborn, I started noticing that...there weren't really any female characters besides the protagonist

And I kept going, "Well, maybe in the next group of characters that get introduced!"

And that kept just...not happening

Eventually, maybe half to two thirds of the way through the book, a second female character was introduced! Nice! Finally!

She ended up, iirc, being a maid or a servant with a bit part at one of the locations (a noble house), and was then never mentioned again

And look, it's been a while since I read Mistborn, and I wasn't inclined (though I was tempted) to go through the whole book to double check, so I can't swear by this

But iirc? That servant and/or maid was the only other named female character in the entire 600+ page book

So, yeah, that's right about when I lost interest in what Brandon Sanderson had to say

and james?? please. literally one of my biggest turn offs in a fic is when it's shown that james either 'chooses' remus over sirius or punishes sirius by like, not talking to him or something. and this is totally a personal preference ofc, but i just--cant see james withholding love as a form of punishment, not when he accepts sirius unconditionally (and knows thats exactly what his family did)

there's also the very simple matter of--he just fundamentally wouldnt be able to kick sirius to second place in his life ykno? and not for snape, of all things. i also personally hc the prank went much different than the usual fanon and therefore, take it less seriously bc i dont care for the angst it creates so ykno. even less possibility of any sort of long lasting consequences.

foolproof way for me to come around to outfits i’m ambivalent on or dislike is having to draw them… see: the dimensions piece + the jungle gi. the sonic prime/dragons rising piece + the core gi. the only exception to this rule is the legacy outfits which despite owning all of them now thanks to ninjago city gardens i STILL dislike half of them bc they’re even more nonsensical and frustrating than usual (and they replaced much superior season-specific outfits in the callback sets which i understand but is just. sad to me. they’re generic. if you’re ~honoring the series~ you could do better) … meanwhile i dislike the armor robes bc they’re just straight up boring . but i get why they’re like that

the thing that gets me about about barbie is that barbie land wasn’t even purposefully a matriarchy, barbie land came about because of the way little girls were playing with their barbies, it wasn’t created by mattel it was created by the people using the toys, so the fact that the barbies ignored the ken’s and had girls night every night wasn’t because they had some bias against him, it was just an accurate depiction of how kids play with barbies. I had some ken dolls as a child and they were essential to the plot in the sense that of course my barbie has a boyfriend because that represented the world i saw around me, but also he didn’t have any purpose in my dream world because i was only interested in what the girls were doing because they represented me and how i wanted to be, I wanted girls night every night I wanted the girls to be president and austronauts and not because of some inherent feminist idea but because I was a girl and I wasn’t thinking about boys, ken was an accessory. this movie wasn’t made to change the world but it showed a different perspective than what we usually see which I thought was fun. Men don’t have to be the centre of all our stories and its not even because we hate them, sometimes we’re just not thinking about them
