One thing I am getting a bit tired of in batfam fanfics is Tim being “morally grey” or being able to work with morally grey people for the wrong reasons.

Tim Drake is the moral center of the Bat Clan. He was introduced to pull Batman back when he got too close to the line. He does the same for Dick and other heroes throughout his runs. He believes in Batman’s code.

The point—the whole point— of Red Robin is Tim testing his moral code (Batman’s Moral Code) and choosing to reaffirm that code with his own reasons. He tries to kill the man who killed his father, gets close, and then stops it because he can’t kill, even if it might be justified like taking down a dangerous serial killer who purposely targets superhero’s families. He takes up the mantle of the fallen Robin (Red Robin) as a preemptive punishment because he believes he’s going to break the code and then proceeds to save, help, trust, and befriend people because at his core he can never become the Fallen Robin — no matter how much he tries to push himself over that edge or to logic his way out of empathy.

Tim Drake believes in the no kill rule because Tim Drake believes in redemption and second chances and helping people even when they don’t want to be helped.

And that is why he can work with morally grey people. That’s why he can make friends with League Assassins and work with Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn. It’s why he has, arguably, the closest relationship with Jason (depending on the run of course) and see the best in Jason. It’s why he advocates for Cass’ redemption when she’s fresh off the league. It’s why he has a good relationship with Helena (that’s her little brother!) and Selina.

Tim can work with morally grey people because he believes in the best of them. He believes in their redemption and their ability to chose the right thing. He will offer his hand again and again no matter their background or their past choices or if they hurt/betrayed/tried to kill him. It’s why he can forgive and move forward.

Tim is like Bruce at his best. Their moral code allows for a million chances because they are, at their core, optimists playing at cold rationality. Tim and Bruce would never have become heroes without that optimism and empathy. Bruce for obvious reasons. Tim because if he didn’t see the best in people, he would have tried to take Batman out himself before Bruce could become a killer.

Tim Drake is a menace. He is the superhero community’s favorite little brother. He has issues with boundaries and internal foot-in-mouth syndrome. He is off putting and socially inept and makes up for it with pure sincerity and practicing social behavior because he cares (The Handshake! Y’all know what I’m talking about!)

He’s been damaged by his time as a cape. He’s not as trusting as he used to be. He’s changed and grown as a character from the naive 13 year old who tracked Dick Grayson down at Haly’s circus because he just wanted to help. He has contingency plans for his best friends and his family at 17+ when at 15 he swore he never would.

But he is still, at his core, a good moral person who believes in redemption with an eternal optimism that defies the logic and rational he clings to.

(Side note: Tim is far more trusting than Bruce.

It’s why he has more positive relationships with lots of people, not just morally grey people. Even if his trust is damaged, he’s not Batman. He can never become Batman. Him becoming Batman, not just wearing the cowl but becoming him, is Tim’s Bad Ending because that is a Tim who lost his hope and empathy and trust to the darkness.

Bruce can withstand that darkness and cling to his optimism even as he lacks trust. Even when he needs reminders of why he does what he does.

Dick can too. Dick is Batman’s true heir because Dick can be a Batman who hopes and trusts even when consumed by Darkness (even when Bruce was dead and he was drowning under the cowl because of his grief, he still thanks Babs and teaches Damian that it can get better but that’s a meta for another post).

It is one of the fundamental differences between the three, in my opinion.)

Me, when I was on vacation with my family and I heard my aunt talking to my mom about autism on the other side of the door (because I had told my aunt a few days before the trip that I think I might be autistic and that I was learning to unmask), and as soon as I heard it, I immediately jumped into the conversation to talk non-stop with them because autism is one of my special interests, and I came across as more energetic and talkative than usual, even though I'm generally very quiet.

These are just a few of the reasons I LOVE the LGBTQIA+ community so much!

It's always important to remember what being a part of a community like this means. For me personally it means home, it means love, friendship and safety but for millions of people across the world right now it's the opposite, with everything going on in the world (especially with the recent rulings in the UK and USA) it's easy to forget that not everyone has a safe space in the world, they're being persecuted and hated for just being themselves!

Remember people, be there, be seen, be careful, be proud but above all be kind!

It's truly interesting how Dean/Cas relationship changed after s6.

Like in s4 & 5 I see them as friends with insane sexual tension, but s6... it's different. They're not around that much, started bickering way more. Dean is mad, that Cas is hiding something from him, the relationship starts to feel a bit colder, the betrayal...

And then in s7 the turning point happens.

Cas becomes God, Dean is still mad

doesn't want to do anything but fix Baby, drink and watch porn

And yet, when Cas appears all in blood, asking for help...Dean helps

Then, Cas dies. And Dean's reaction to this, to me tbh it really looks like he lost his friend

But second death...hmmm, reaction is a bit different

From that exact Cas' death, mourning and widower arc begins.

and subsequent deaths of Cas are getting worse and worse for him, I don't think I'll make a post, there's already enough of that.

So he has nightmares

Even under the influence of the poisoned burger, he can't stop thinking about him

He's not the same Dean anymore

Then, he meets Emmanuel!Cas and says this

Later, when Cas remembers who he is, he immediately tries to leave, Dean says this

You remember, then you know you did the best you could at the time.

He's angry, couldn't forget what Cas did and yet still defends him...

Then Cas says that he deserves to die and can't possibly fix what he did and why he walked out from that river...

Dean says:

Maybe to fix it.

And gives the trench coat..

After that, they go to Sam and help him. Cas consumed Halucifer and becomes crazy.

In 7x21, he meets Cas again, he's happy, but gets a little distracted by Cas' crazyness. There is some kind of fight with Meg because of the word of god. Dean with Cas move to the dining room. And there, after 7x17 where he defended Cas, he again mentions the topic of what Cas did.

And in general from 7x21 to 7x23 Dean will simply tolerate Cas.

And so in s8, their whole relationship changes a lot. In 8x01 Dean ripped apart the whole purgatory just to find The Angel. You might think, maybe Dean wants to kill him... Yk, after what Cas did...betrayal, souls, leviathans, broke sam's wall, left Dean with gorilla-wolfes.

But no...he wants to find him, because he needs him, and not for his powers or something, he just NEEDS him...

He needs Cas so much just because...no matter why. He won't leave purgatory without him. He's ready to die and have others die, if only he could get Cas out....

In 8x07 the wodower arc begins. He can't forget and accept that Cas didn't get out, he sees him everywhere. he feels guilty because he couldn't save Cas.

Dean: I told you i would get you out. We were there...and it's like you just gave up. it like you didn't believe we could do it. you kept saying you didn't think it would work. did you not trust me?

Cas: Dean...

Dean: I did everything i could to get you out. everything....I did not leave you.

Cas: So you think this was your fault?

Later

Cas: Getting me out of purgatory wasn't your responsibility.

Dean: You didn't get out. So whose fault was it?

Cas: It not about fault. its about will. Dean, do you really not remember?

Dean: I lived, Cas. Okay? I know what happened.

Cas: No...you think you know. you remember it that way you needed to.

Dean: Look, I don't need to feel like hell for failing you, okay? For failing you like i failed every other godforsaken thing i care about. i don't need it.

"I don't need it" he says...this fucker WANTED IT. Otherwise, I don't understand why he tortured himself with guilt for so long, he changed his damn memories just to feel guilty about how he couldn't save Cas, he just loves torturing himself.

In 8x08 and 8x10 nothing much, only thing is that Cas got lobotomized and killed Alfie.

Well in 8x17, I guess you already know.
