I've been thinking about the time post-canon where WGXN break out of the honeymoon phase because LWJ gets hurt. Maybe protecting WWX; that'd be the worst.

It's not a break-up; it's just LWJ realizing that WWX isn't acting quite the same. It's the glance LWJ's side when WWX brags about his husband. It's the bragging being less hyperbolic and LWJ not being sure if WWX's laughter is fake. Not relying on LWJ as much. Not mentioning details relevant to their night-hunts to LWJ. The more it goes on the less LWJ is being trusted by WWX, and LWJ is unable to find a way to change this. When LWJ grabs WWX and insists upon his devotion to WWX, WWX replies that of course he knows! LWJ tells WWX that he'll never let anything happen to WWX, but he's not sure WWX believes him.

Anyway LWJ is feeling some kind of way about being frozen out of WWX's confidence, not that he's put it in those words, and then they find themselves on a night-hunt with YMJ - it's a night-hunt with an investigation part so it takes them a while, and SLJ is there, which LWJ usually hates but isn't even his least favorite thing about the endeavour at the moment. LWJ isn't paying as much attention (glaring) to SLJ as usual, he's too busy with trying to regain WWX's trust being sad being focused on his relationship with WWX.

WWX and LWJ do spend some more time than usual with JC, ostensibly coordinating the night-hunt, really because spending time with JC is easier than WWX remembered (not least because it means not being alone with LWJ). Huh! JC has changed. No longer quite the pathetic, petty, weak boy WWX enshrined in his memory.

At the end of a conversation, when WWX has flit away and LWJ is brooding, and for some reason JC didn't leave yet and is still with LWJ, JC gives a little sigh. "So it's started, then."

LWJ looks at him. He wants JC to shut up and go away - he always wants JC to shut up and go away - but he also wants to know what JC means.

"He's started walling off. What did you do that made him lose confidence in you? He couldn't talk your strength too high and now he's finding excuses not to let you investigate on your own."

LWJ bristles. "You dont--"

The denial dies off on its own. What would he say? SLJ makes what is happening into a bad thing. But isn't it a bad thing, isn't it something LWJ wishes would go away? But he makes it something LWJ's did, but LWJ didn't mean to - but does LWJ's intent matter, when the result is letting WWX down? It feels unfair; it feels deserved. Would LWJ rather JC make it into WWX's fault somehow? Simply imagining JC casting WWX as the culprit makes anger swell in LWJ's belly.

He stares at JC, mute.

The corner of JC's lips twist in something that's not quite a smile. "Did you think it would never happen to you?"

LWJ hears the echo of the question he's thought about JC for years. Did you think you were good enough for him?

I've been thinking about it a lot.

The isolation and alienation of your loved one denying you the acknowledgement that there's something wrong; the loneliness of carrying a relationship with someone who's neatly slid you out of the people he's willing to be vulnerable with; the unbearable kinship with someone you hate, someone your loved one left behind, someone you're horrified to realize went through the same, like a mirror the future holds out to you.

He smiles when they wed, but not once does he laugh.

Night Mooring

The moon sets and crows caw as frost fills the atmosphere. Precisely at midnight in a dungeon in Lanling, Lan Wangji, the dreaded Yiling Patriarch, rises from the dead.

While recovering from the giant murder turtle, a feverish WWX rambles on about his theories on manipulation of resentful energy to LW. When theyre rescued by the Jiang, WC intercepts them and manages to catch LWJ, dropping him into the burial mounds a full two months earlier than he'd have dropped WWX.

After the massacre of Lots Pier, WWX does not let JC escape, and WLJ ends up asking WC to drop Yu-furens corpse in the BM as well to disgrace her (her deeply resentful corpse is near conscious and offers up he guts for LWJ to fashion a rustic guqin out of, with which he implements om f WWX theories and escapes).

LWJ is a much quieter Yiling Patriarch. He uses ghosts a lot more than corpses, having them harm and possess the enemy. His is not the story of an underdog rising due to power, but of a noble clan's dirty little secret. Isolated, mute, an wandering th jianghu until he saves the Wen remnants, he's simply waiting to die by the end.

It's not NHS that has him revived through MXY, but Su She, at JGYs behest, using one of his on sect members (it does not go the way they planned).

Beyond the forest, the day was brightening - the sun's ascension hanging over their heads like the blade of a golden knife. Soon, the hunters would wake to scour the forest. Lan Wangji needed to be long gone before they arrived.

With that in mind, he snapped the arrow's neck in half, and ripped it from the man's chest with nary a word of warning.

"Ah!"

Before his patient could so much as flinch from the pain, he pooled moonlight around the freshly reopened wound, coaxing the blood to slow, and the skin to seal shut. To his immense relief, it healed fully within a ke leaving nothing behind but a small, silvery star upon the man's chest.

Satisfied with his handiwork, he sat back on his heels, withdrawing his light from the man's veins at the same time.

He reached up to physically inspect the integrity of the scar, but at the first touch of his palm, the man jumped up, scuttling backwards till his spine slammed into the rock he'd earlier been lying against.

"Ow..." He winced, the breath knocked out of him upon impact; his freshly knitted skin scraped raw. He struggled to claw himself back into a seated position, uncaring as the movement pulled at the scar marring his chest.

Lan Wangji frowned. This simply wouldn't do.

He chased after the man, pinning his shoulder beneath his palm in an effort to keep him from jumping around so recklessly.

"Do not move," he admonished. "Your wounds were extensive. The skin could easily reopen."

"Right..." the man wheezed, eyeing him oddly - though remained blessedly still as Lan Wangji reached out to continue his inspection.

He brushed his fingertips over the small, star-shaped scar on the man's chest, pleased to find it had fused evenly, and seemed unlikely to split.

However, when he traced his thumb over it to double check its integrity, his patient's breath hitched, and his face burned red - a sure sign it was not quite so well-mended as it appeared.

He would have to caution the man to be careful - as much as he could manage, with the hunters apparently willing to fell any of them with their vicious weaponry.

A spike of fear shot through him as he realised he'd let his guard down without meaning to, leaving both of them open to another attack. His eyes flicked nervously around the surrounding forest, then back to the man, whose pulse beat strong as a drum beneath his palm - reassuring for all it followed a frantic rhythm.

"Are you well enough to stand?" he asked, bending forward to steady his patient.

Mutely, the man nodded, eyes still wide and panicked. Briefly, Lan Wangji wondered if he should have been gentler when removing the arrow, for now his patient seemed to fear him.

Then he followed the man's gaze to his neck; his collarbones; his naked torso, flimsily wrapped with the sheer, torn robe he'd been forced to don.

Lan Wangji flushed, and pulled the collar tighter. His clothing must have been jostled when he'd tended to the man's injuries - poorly designed as it was, it had fallen open.

He quickly stood, pretending not to be flustered by the realisation that this stranger had seen far more of him than was polite. He'd also seen more of the man than he'd wished to. If anything, they were equal in that regard.

What do you think about jc and wwx's relationship? And how sometimes it seems like wwx is not very kind(?) thinking about jc? I don't perceive him having a good opinion about jc (as he does with wn and lwj that he praises)

Oh, this is a tricky one for me! Thanks for the ask, it sparked a lot of thinking... probably too much, oops... and sorry it took so long to reply, there was a small tornado over the weekend so I've been busy picking up the yard for the last couple days...

I definitely agree that's the overall vibe. It's tough because I go back and forth on this and can probably be swayed in different directions depending on my mood or if I read a persuasive argument or something. (And if anyone has any thoughts on the topic I definitely welcome commentary or different perspectives! It's an interesting topic with a lot of different angles to explore, I think.) Or rather what I think the cause of it is, because I agree that he doesn't think of him in particularly nice ways, especially post-resurrection.

Because of the framing of the story, it's a little hard to tell if it's how he's thought about Jiang Cheng all along, or if it's his post-resurrection resentment coloring his recollections.

So then the question I waffle on is exactly how much of these opinions are from anger over everything that happened, how much stem from avoiding painful topics, and how much are from his ideas of Jiang Cheng that took root long before everything that happened? Or why not a little bit of all three!

(Cut for length. 'Challenge: Shut the Fuck Up and Have a Concise Point' has been a spectacular failure. Brevity is the soul of wit but these two make me stupid, so.)

As much as I do dearly love the most precious purple darling of my heart Jiang Cheng, from Wei Wuxian's perspective I can't really blame him for being at least a little bit peeved! There was a siege, after all, and it's not like Jiang Cheng is exactly nice to him either in the present timeline. So there's some 'turnabout is fair play' involved there. I might think he's simply objectively wrong in some of his evaluations of Jiang Cheng, but from an emotional perspective it makes sense and is probably on the mild side, all things considered.

In some ways, I think Wei Wuxian is somewhat invested in the idea of being someone that lets anything and everything go. Partially because it's true that he really does let go of a lot, perhaps to the point where the line is between a healthy amount of letting go and plain avoidance could be called into question, but also because it's what Jiang Yanli told him that's what he was like:

Jiang YanLi said that he was born with a smiling look. No matter what unfortunate thing happened, he wouldn't cling on to them; no matter what situation he was in, he would be happy.

To some extent I think he wants to live up to that, to still be who his shijie said he is, back before everything horrible happened and he was trapped in a downward spiral. So he tries to suppress the greater part of both his anger and resentment, but it still sort of... leaks out, in all those small comments.

In some ways they're mirror opposites of each other: Jiang Cheng is aggressively bitter and angry to suppress how much he still cares about Wei Wuxian, and Wei Wuxian is comparatively civil and pleasant, considering the circumstances, to suppress the genuine pain and anger he feels.

And in some way, that response - the muted sort of civility - sets Jiang Cheng off even more, because it plays so strongly into his fears and insecurities that he cares more about Wei Wuxian than Wei Wuxian cares about him. The way their personalities and coping mechanisms and miscommunications all compound and echo off each other and create this awful swirling chasm between them is tragic but also rings so painfully true.

I think their first big confrontation after Jiang Cheng knows for sure that he was right, that it's really Wei Wuxian - in the inn after Jiang Cheng 'borrows' Fairy - really encapsulates that dynamic between them.

Although his face had always been clouded, marked with arrogance and satire, it seemed as if every corner of it had come alive. It was difficult to determine whether it was vengeful wrath, fathomless hatred, or raving ecstasy.

-- Ch. 23. Love or hate, that's... a lot of feelings going on right there on Jiang Cheng's side. And then (from his perspective) he gets a whole lot of bland nothing back.

For a moment, no one spoke a word. The cup of tea was still steaming hot. Without having a single sip of it, he hurled it onto the ground. Jiang Cheng pulled a curt smile on his face, "... Don't you have anything to say to me?" […] With a sincere tone, Wei WuXian replied: "I don't know what to say to you." Jiang Cheng whispered: "You really don't learn, do you?"

And then to add insult to injury, later in the scene what finally provokes a real response from Wei Wuxian is insulting Lan Wangji.

If I had to take a stab at it, I'd probably say that Jiang Cheng's terrible reaction to non-reactions probably has something to do with his father's vague non-confrontational disappointment and general apathy, on top of just being infuriating in general.

But it's the scene in ch. 32 where the random children are playing out the Sunshot campaign where we see that Wei Wuxian's really not so unbothered about what happened between them at all:

"Jiang Cheng", "Hmph, I can't be better than you? Do you remember how you died?" The light smile on Wei WuXian's face dissipated at once. It was as if he had suddenly been pricked by a poisonous needle. A faint, sharp pain came from all around his body.

Even though it's the situation as seen through third parties who only having rumors to go off of (and the novel reminds us over and over again how accurate that is, even following up in later chapters to have Wei Wuxian clarify), it's obvious that being reminded of the general situation actually is pretty painful for him even if the details aren't particularly accurate. It takes him by surprise and hits where it hurts.

I think this whole pattern between the two of them plays heavily into the lead-up to the Ancestral Hall confrontation, actually - which is also where Wei Wuxian's sourness and dismissiveness is at its peak, and so is Jiang Cheng's fury and bitterness at Wei Wuxian's flippant attitude.

From Jiang Cheng's perspective, he's having just how little Wei Wuxian cares about him shoved in his face right after he'd just been prepared to do something that looks vaguely like dying for him at the Second Siege. Meanwhile, I'm pretty sure Wei Wuxian doesn't know any of that preparing-to-sacrifice-himself stuff even happened, since he was a little busy turning himself into bait with spirit lure flags and all.

So, as usual, everything is horribly amplified by all the things each of them doesn't know about the other. All the things they don't know they don't know come to a head.

Unfortunately only Jiang Cheng comes out of that Ancestral Hall really knowing anything that he didn't know before.

For most of the novel, there's also just... less that he knows about Wen Ning and Lan Wangji. There's so much less baggage, less intensity.

Wen Ning, bless him, Wei Wuxian only knew as a living person for one afternoon at an archery tournament and then for three days at the Supervisory Office in Yiling. (Well, plus the time spent on the mountain for the golden core transfer but I don't think they were sitting around chatting over a nice cup of tea for that.) Of course some of what Wen Ning does really does deserve praise - he did help them at great personal danger to himself. But does Wei Wuxian even really know him? Wen Ning's suppressed resentment in life becomes a powerful tool for Wei Wuxian later, but how much does he really know about his hopes and fears and dreams? A significant chunk of time in the Burial Mounds is spent with no consciousness on Wen Ning's part, and once he regains consciousness there's still this sort of... lingering weird vibe with them until the very end of the novel when Wen Ning becomes more independent. There's genuine friendship, but there's also a sort of avoidance of ever really touching the topic of how Wen Ning feels about being used as his weapon, about being raised as a fierce corpse, about the possibility of being controlled by him, about the decisions Wei Wuxian made for him.

Wen Ning is also just... easy to like. He's sweet and polite -- and he never really pushes back or questions Wei Wuxian's decisions or hits him where it hurts the way Jiang Cheng does.

All he really knows about Lan Wangji for a good chunk of the novel is that he's the goody-two-shoes Lan from summer camp who condemns evil or whatever. Obviously that perception changes drastically throughout the story as more information is revealed and misunderstandings from the past are corrected, but he'd never really had any expectations in his past life for LWJ, and so it left far less room for disappointment, since he didn't realize how LWJ really felt. So what's not to praise?

Of course from a more meta standpoint LWJ is frequently used as a direct contrast to Jiang Cheng, often in ways that are intentionally deceptive on MXTX's part in service to the overall goal of trickle-truthing us about Jiang Cheng over the course of the novel. The setup is constantly reframing his character with tidbits of new information. For example the way Wei Wuxian reacts when seeing Lan Wangji's discipline whip scars in ch. 11 is clearly meant to lead us to believe Jiang Cheng committed some horrible transgression to recieve his own discipline whip scar... and then we find out actually it was from Wen Chao torturing him after the fall of the Jiang sect, because he foolishly, impulsively rushed back to recover his parents' bodies from Lotus Pier, forcing his long-suffering shixiong to sacrifice his own core... except oh wait, that's not what happened at all, except Wei Wuxian doesn't know that last part. So some of the early comparisons I think were also meant to serve that purpose.

But in terms of how Wei Wuxian uses this sort of dismissiveness to avoid confronting how much he's really lost, I think the way he regards Lotus Pier itself is pretty telling:

Although he had always dreamed of returning to Lotus Pier once more, he didn't want to go back to the tattered one nowadays!

Because isn't it just easier to think about how it's not that great anyway, so who cares if you've lost it?

MDZS Fic Idea | Love mutes WWX

Even after years of living at Gusu Lan, WWX is still perfectly capable of ticking LQR off. It doesn't happen as frequently, but when it does most now breath a sigh of relief in secret. It shows LQR is fine and well...

But one day it's different. The weather had been particularly awful and one way or another LQR injured himself.. yet this time he doesn't just snap back. He's holed up in his room, doesn't heal right.

Everyone, including WWX becomes worried that LQR might've given up, or that he thinks he's done enough, can let go of life at last. Of course, that's not just going to happen on WWX's watch. No, him, LWJ, WN, LSZ and LJY either go to find a doctor for him or they find one that's already close by.

The doctor they find is a lady, close to LQR in age, wise, patient and kind. She seems like a good choice.. but still, somehow LQR doesn't seem to get better, at least judging by how often he has them call for her.

It takes a while before those around the pair realize that.. LQR is by then just fine, physically. Emotionally? He's crushing. Man, does he have a crush. And with that in mind, looking closer, she's crushing just as hard.

They are, in fact, so in love that no one can cope with staying around them.

Not only that, but they quickly hit it off and for the first time, no matter how hard he tries to annoy him, WWX seems muted in LQR's world. He's not even paying any sort of attention to WWX any longer.

Who knew that, in the end, it was really the entire bloodline of the Lan's that had this "Once in love he's a fool" trait?

I’m not publishing the ask because it’s very long and I would simply have to go and refute it step by step, which wouldn’t benefit anyone, but I’m afraid it ultimately is an irreconcilable characterization disagreement. Lan Xichen, in fact, is not the “I can fix him” guy. I think actually Lxc doesn’t want to fix people (he never tried to change JGY or LWJ, for example, only support and understand them!), and he certainly does not do emotional labor for just anyone, especially post canon. He’s not a sexy therapist (derogatory)!

ITMF fics where Wei Wuxian is really harmed by the resentful energy / war/abuse injuries /starvation from surviving and then returning to live in the BM, and he and the Wens know: he is hurt, weak, slowly dying. Something with sad and depressed Wei Ying and the Wens, who try to take care of him while he still has some time and A-Yuan cheering him up. Maybe the whole cultivation world problem is a factor in Wei Ying giving up on his health and putting his all into protecting the Wens, who see and try to help however possible. Maybe Lan Zhan sees/thinks something is off and comes to them to help or at least spend time with them.

Maybe the siege happens anyway, maybe the plot changes (e.g. someone saves the Wens and helps Wei Ying, or they leave somewhere else, or they are left alone and become a village/sect), maybe Wei Ying dies/comes to the brink of death from poor health before someone can kill him, maybe he decides to accept and speed the process and break the Seal while sacrificing himself, maybe he slowly gets better. Overall, I really crave hurt and sick Wei Ying knowing the inevitable consequence of his poor health and getting comfort and love from the Wens (and any other people).

I am in the mood for a fic where there is a confrontation between Lan Qiren and Wei Wuxian. The most important part is that during the confrontation is that Wei Wuxian says that he does not respect Lan Qiren and does not believe he is worthy of respect. Lan Qiren is an awful teacher who never taught him anything. He is not a good disciple of the Lan sect as he breaks rules all the time. Lan Qiren was disrespectful towards Wei Wuxian’s mother, a dead woman, for something she did years ago.

I just want a fic that addresses these points and shows that Wei Wuxian really doesn’t care about Lan Qiren and in fact really dislikes him. I would also like to see some karma visited upon Lan Qiren and for him to be shocked that Wei Wuxian, and maybe even most his or the younger generation, see him as a joke.

Wei Wuxian is sitting cross-legged on the mossy grass and appears to be weaving together the stems of several dandelions, occasionally throwing some of the petals in Lan Wangji’s direction, who steadfastly ignores him in his muted conversation with Nie Mingjue... They both look over at the rest of their group, where Wei Wuxian has finished his flower crown and is presenting it to Lan Wangji with a little flourish. Lan Wangji gazes down at it, then turns back to Nie Mingjue, who’s watching this display intently. Physically incapable of accepting defeat, Wei Wuxian now tries to deposit the dandelion crown on Lan Wangji’s head anyway; Lan Wangji takes one step to the side. Wei Wuxian changes tactics and makes a grab for Lan Wangji’s hand, equally unsuccessful. Wei Wuxian has finally given up and lets the wreath drop to the ground between them, his sulk visible even several metres away. He starts walking over to them, and in the background, Jin Zixuan sees Lan Wangji bow down to pick the crown back up, tucking it into his sleeve,

the parting scene, where wwx gives song lan xxcs spirit and lwj gives him shuanghua, and he says he will "wander the world with xingchen, exorcising evil" even though he is mute and half dead, and xingchen is barely even clinging to the world, he is still with xingchen, he puts shuanghua across his chest like it is his own, and keeps xingchen next to his still heart.

what breaks me the most is the way lwj looks at him, as if he can see his own life if things were slightly different, knowing he would do exactly the same as song lan. lan wangji would have held wei wuxians shattered soul to his chest and cherished him forever.

[Little snippets of parts I have yet to write]

"Lan Er-Ge" Jiang Cheng greets as Lan Wangji dismounts his sword and steps onto the aged wooden planks of the pier.

Lan Wangji's frown deepens and his brows draw inward, his frown expressing his thoughts without needing to uncover his hands from his sleeves. He wants Jiang Cheng to call him by name.

Jiang Cheng suppresses his smirk, extending a hand out to his friend. This visit is supposed to be short, they will have to make as much use of their quickly dwindling time as possible. "Lan Zhan..."

Lan Wangji's fingers are so smooth and soft when they meet Cheng's - their fingers intertwined. They're gentle like Wangji had never suffered a hard day's work in his life, but they both know that's far from the case.

The walk through the streets and markets of Yunmeng is nice, some of the elderly that watched Jiang Cheng grow up smile knowingly at the pair. It makes embarrassment burn down his neck and across the apples of his cheeks. The lanterns begin to light as the sun sets across the water, painting the streets in a pinkish glow. A glow that only aids in fueling Cheng's unwavering awe of his partner and the beauty that is Lan Wangji.

Wangji seems to notice the attention on him, and he slowly draws his hand back. He signs something, his fingers shaking almost too much for Cheng to understand, but he understands. He always understands.

With a nod of confirmation, Lan Wangji is leaning in, hands coming up to cup Jiang Cheng's face. His thumbs rest along the younger's jaw and cheeks, fingers tucked just under Cheng's ears. The meeting of their lips is slow and sweet, timid breaths exchanged like the letters they had shared over the years - nervous but filled with unbridled, incomparable love.

Nothing else matters in the world right now. And Jiang Cheng is almost naive enough to think it never will. For now, however, he'll stay right here in this moment with the man he loves, enjoying every second.

I'm working on a mute lwj fic and it's slow going but I am thriving.

Jiang Cheng knows sign language and LWJ latches onto him instead of Wei Ying (blasphemous I know).

It's cute and soft and sweet.
