like holy shit, who cares?? that’s why fiction exists, dummy: to make stuff up, to dramatize, to romanticize. we all have very surface level knowledge of these characters because that’s all there is. the rest of it is just people having fun filling in the blanks, and everyone’s interpretation is their own. it might not be the same as yours and that’s ok, but to make obnoxious posts like some kind of intellectual superior is some bullshit bruh. we’re all just fantasizing about little army men made of pixels, HUMBLE YOURSELF. you’re boring and insufferable and i hope you step in wet dog shit and don’t realize it until you’re stuck in traffic.

The way you spend most of the book thinking that Xie Lian just has incredibly terrible luck as a character trait, and maybe you even start to believe—in the most horrifying “I don’t want to believe this” way—that Xie Lian rescuing a child from a gruesome death is what cursed him to his terrible luck (as per what every other character tries to pressure Xie Lian into believing).

Then you find out that Xie Lian only has terrible luck because he gave his luck away. One of his banishment collars is literally to redistribute his luck as per his own wishes so that others born with less luck could receive more, and this wish in particular was probably very closely tied in to his rescuing of young Hong Hong’er, who Guoshi told him was innately unlucky and thus deserved death in order for the most beloved prince to continue living his privileged life as usual. And then he spends 800 years wandering the earth with shit luck, still helping others where he could and refusing to turn back on his morals like he almost did before, just because his luck had changed.

Xie Lian used his momentary faltering as a lesson to never let “bad luck” demoralize him from his own morals, and he really is a good person for this.

On a completely unrelated note, did you know that the (usually bright yellow) Parking Brake switch on larger motorhomes also functions as an Emergency Brake?

Although the low-air spring-loaded brake (aka the secondary Parking Brake) is supposed to automatically kick in when something happens to compromise the air flow to the primary Service Brakes.

i don't know maybe it's the translation i read but i guess i always thought it was made fairly clear that shuro never legitimately hated laios so much as he resented him for being able to be the way he was. much like laios (albeit for very different reasons) shuro's affect is frequently commented on by others to be strange and at a mismatch with the prevailing culture around him, being very reticent to the point of the part where he tells the girl he likes that he likes her being when he Proposed. quite a few characters say something to this effect! shuro was raised in formality and stoicism and i think has a tendency towards not rocking the boat even besides that, and now here's this guy who breaks every one of his rules and he makes it look so easy. it's like a two-pronged frustration of "doesn't this guy understand that you can't just do that" and "fuck, what would it feel like to be able to do that." of course he gets mad! it's frustration, but it's also envy.
