Hug Slut - Brand New Legs

I've been a fan of Brand New Legs since I heard their song "Shade" in 2022 and I don't think they've put out anything bad since and "Hug Slut" is no exception.

Kicking off with a stumbling, skipped heartbeat bassline and a guitar part vaguely reminiscent of John Meyer's "Neon", "Hug Slut" is an understated song that wouldn't be out of place in a chill jazz playlist sonically, but it's the lyrics and vocal performance that take it from "ooh, cool and chill millennial house party" to "everyone's mingling and I'm hanging out in the corner people watching smoking my Marlboro lights". It's being on the outside looking in when all you want to do is be out there being sociable and finding someone to do it with you. Honestly, it feels bang up to date with a society where it feels like we're expected to be sociable, going to parties, meeting people but never emotionally vulnerable enough to be intimate.

A song about being touch starved never felt so groovy.

hi there! welcome to my blog! i'm 19 from canada, and i use she/he pronouns interchangeably 50-50.

everyone and anyone can be a music reviewer. that's because music is a language so universal that it transcends spoken word. a three-minute song can move people more than a million-word-long epic could even dream of, and that's why i want to share some of my favourite things with everyone here!

if it wasn't painfully obvious, i have been a passionate music fan my entire life. music is so intrinsically intertwined with my life that it very well may just be the magic that binds the cells in my body and keeps my dna from crumpling. or maybe i'm a little bit dramatic.

to give myself and my reviews a little bit of credibility, not only am i a songwriter, myself, but i'm also a classically trained musician (i primarily play the flute, however i've dabbled in almost everything, from trombone, to guitar, to piano, to drums). while i mostly focus my time on digital production (edm and the likes), i do also compose just plain old score as well!

while my goals aren't to pursue music as a career, and i instead have my heart set on a career in the medical field, i still dream of sharing my love for music with the world. so hopefully, you can find some new gems on this blog.

Someone’s prob caught this long before me, but:

In Lord of the rings (fellowship) we see the ring leaving Gollum and bouncing and rolling down the rocks:

The ring wanted to leave Gollum and therefore did.

It’s then picked up by Bilbo unwillingly; has an ‘unexpected journey’; and stays with him.

But when Bilbo is leaving, he decides to leave the ring with Frodo. The ring however, wants to stay and keep wielding its power and influence over him.

And when, at Gandalf’s insistence, Bilbo drops the ring, it still doesn’t want to leave him:

Which is why it falls flat, no bouncing or rolling away. It thuds to the floor like a child might stomp its foot when not getting its way.

male music critics are obsessed with accusing women of victimizing themselves instead of acknowledging that the entertainment industry is extremely predatory and it's primary victims are women and children. it's not exclusive to the industry either! a lot of women in general are victims/survivors, and they also get accused of just seeking sympathy or being perpetual victims when they talk about their experiences. I wonder why that might be 🤔

Nomura was insane for that statement he made. I know I should be focused on the foreteller part of it but I'm stuck on the inspiration for so much coming from the story of an American blues musician meeting with the devil to get guitar skills.

Like on one hand. Darkness/mom, mom/foretellers, marluxia/sora, mom/xehanort and xehanort/terra all being the devil and guitar player throughout the series imo. But also all I can think about is the devil went down to gerogia because that is so xehanort and sora to me in kh3 like is that literally not their vibe and it's also such a hysterical vision in my mind. I'm sorry like:

"Well, that ol' Devil bowed his head because he knew that he'd been beat

And he laid that golden fiddle down on the ground at Johnny's feet

Johnny said, "Devil, come on back if you ever wanna try again"

Also "this means demyx is mom" I will kms if that's the truth. I think its funnier if demyx also somehow "made a deal with the devil" but he's the only literal interpretation of this story in kh and that's why he has a sitar it would incredibly hilarious
