Really pleased with this collection I created for the National Building Museum Store! I had the pleasure of working with them earlier this year as an invited featured artist and they decided to carry me in their shop. I love that this order has a bit of everything, they wanted some big statement pieces, some small studs, a capsule collection of easy to match sets and some everyday best sellers. I’m amazed at how much I’ve grown in this area of working with stores and wholesale. It’s been a wild ride of learning, failing, growth and reflection. I think back to how I handled my first orders and compare it to now. A lot has changed from how I take orders, to planning my time (which this year was a bit of a failure!) to how I package and ship my work. I always feel like I’m learning something new with each order. I know I’m really excited to be working with so many truly amazing shop owners and stores I never would have imagined I’d be doing this so consistently. Very grateful ☺️!

Scenario:

A big, famous department store has four portraits of Hitler as decoration on a wall. Two of the portraits are hanging behind a small statue of two hands making a heart. The portraits are lifelike, but in bright colors. They are replicas of work by a famous artist, and art critics think the artist was probably criticizing Hitler. Neo-Nazi politicians dislike the originals and, when a museum included them as part of an international tour, called for the originals to be specifically excluded from the tour.

There are no plaques or anything explaining any of this history, paying tribute to Hitler's victims, or even naming the artist-- anon found out who created the original works by Googling it. (If you know the store/artist/portraits anon is talking about, please don't spoil it.)

I brought the skirt I'm working on to the museum yesterday, to get some hand-sewing done at the desk between tours (a lot of my projects end up being done half-hand and half-machine, because I love working on the train or during downtime at my various jobs). you know, the one made of the God-Tier WoolTM

when I invited my coworker, a 19-year-old student, to feel the fabric- in that "OH MY GOD FEEL THIS!!!" tone -her jaw dropped

she had never felt soft, light- or even medium-weight wool in her life. she previously thought, it turns out, that all wool was coarse, heavy, and itchy. she couldn't stop stroking it with that awestruck look on her face

truly, fuck fast fashion and the modern garment industry. for depriving us of sensory richness in our clothing so thoroughly that most of us don't even know what we've lost

to go a bit more into detail on this - from what I understand, this was on display* in a house for a number of years. This particular piece comes from the home of the harbormaster (a lovely man), and was exposed to light and about 50+ years of cigarette smoke. The boat in the photo is an early ferry in my area, and the cardboard it is mounted on seems to be some sort of church(??) yard sign(???)

we are still deciding the best course of action for this piece, but in all honestly, as a smallish museum/historical society with a laundry list of pieces with urgent conservation needs, we don't have the manpower to do anything other than keep it in a dark and temperature controlled space.

There are a lot of things that make me sad when I see pieces like this, because its so easy to see how important it was to its former owner, and it hurts me that we can't pour all of our time and resources into every piece that needs help. There are pieces even in this intake (which I cannot show because they contain identifying information about my location) that will be prioritized as they demand more immediate conservation efforts. Time can be a cruel opponent - and all we can do is our best.

anywho!!! all this is to say Support your local historical society!!! they are trying their darndest to preserve your local history and can't do so without community support! (and support does not always mean money!!! genuinely just interacting with your local historical societies can mean so much)

The owner said his father never heard of Uranium glass or Vaseline glass before 1979

A customer asked if he had any… and a monster was born.

Vaseline glass (more yellow) and Green glass (more green) originated in Germany -1789- with the goal of producing colored glass. Uranium ore fit the bill

There were thousands of manufacturers all over the world in the early 1900’s and it was markets as fluorescent but probably nothing about radiation

It was a fad that peaked during 1890to the 1920’s

The wealthy would host dinner parties showing off their collections

Restrictions were put in place during WWII due to the government need of uranium ore (manhattan project )

I realize this is a weird question for a Sunday morning, but does anybody have particularly incisive articles about the tension between architectural preservation and the need (because I do think it's a need!) for new buildings, new spaces, and revising the landscape of a city?

I'm watching a piece on Richard Nickel, who is almost single-handedly responsible for photographing the work of Louis Sullivan and other architects of the Chicago Prairie School, prior to their demolition in the 60s. It's a great piece, and I love Nickel's photographs, but as someone who knows only the Chicago that sprang up in the wake of Nickel's, I can't help but wonder if there's more than simple aesthetics at play here.
