Montréal Ambient Post-Hardcore Troupe MILANKU Unveil New Music Video

~Doomed & Stoned Debuts~

It's the weekend! Time for deep breaths and a slower pace and reflection. At least time enough to check out the new music video from MILANKU. The five-member Montréal band conjures an ethereal sound that takes advantage of ambient soundscapes to drop a robust blend of post-everything.

Milanku's new record is entitled 'À l'aube' (2023), which translates to "At dawn." Each track on the album takes a que from there, starting with misty atmosphere, perhaps representing various stages of the rising sun. This is followed by a radiant post-rock instrumental push with post-hardcore vocal inflections.

The band sings in French, as well, with lyrics inspired by the poetry of French-Czech writer Milan Kundera (b. 1929), who wrote The Unbearable Lightness of Being -- a book that muses about philosophical themes like time, happiness, and eternal return (the idea that everything in the universe repeats itself).

In fact, the song titles themselves are each piece of a poem, which like the music delves into poignant feelings of loneliness, despair, and consolation. Milanku gave us this window into their creative process:

Most of the skeleton of the album was built before the pandemic. After a few months of downtime, we refined and modified the songs and recorded the songs in two studio sessions. The pandemic had an impact on the sound of all the songs on the album. Without the pandemic, the result of the album would not be the same at all. The album sounds like a whole, a maturity of the band and a story that is told from the first note to the last.

Having revealed the opening track already, today Milanku reveals the album closer: "À l'aube; nous sommes disparus" ("At dawn; we will be gone"). It features Erika Angell from Thus Owls.

The most musically emotional track of the album, this song starts off as a sweet guitar melody and slowly turns into a storm featuring Erika’s voice as the grand priestess of this storm that everyone is trying to escape. The lyrics in Swedish and French make it even more mystical.

Milaku's À l'aube doesn't just rage against the gloom; it observes it, experiences it deeply, and reaches tirelessly towards hope. The sound absolutely envelops you in ecstatic glory by album's end. If Milanku draws its origins from the work of Milan Kundera, the soundtrack is definitely more on the side of the thundering density of the being than of its "unbearable lightness", galvanized by the Czech author.

From the start, Milanku hammers out its brutal character, infused with melancholy, even dystopia, and standing straight upright on the wire: defiant, shouting, and inspired.

Mesmerized by the warrior's rage, flayed by its own doldrums, the quartet relies on pared-down arrangements and an oft-staged vocal presence, harmonizing like an instrument, and howling at the big time, but plastered with a disquieting sense of dilettante.

At the heart of the enterprise, tearing off the peels of flapping skins, we explore the state of affairs of the contemporary genre, tragic, desolate, where any notion of common sense seems diffuse in the amalgam of trompe-l'oeil. The texts are meditative, inquisitive and the observations that emanate from them, weep and persist in trying to make sense of it, through its ever-growing losses of illusion.

With four full-length releases behind them, Milanku presents today 'À l'aube' (2023), a five-track burn that breathes new life into a caste of disenfranchised people, imbued with a disarming lucidity, and gives itself a framework and a voice to pull its head out of the swamp.

Luna leant over the Doctor’s shoulder, looking at the multitudes of pipes and technological experiments. Liz Shaw had recently left, returning to Cambridge, leaving the Doctor without a scientific assistant, and poor Luna was kind of keelhauled into that role… Whether the Doctor liked it or not. She frowned, looking at the blueprints for the TARDIS circuits, letters written in Gallifreyan and the image of the materialisation circuit resembling the one that she’d seen on occasion when hiding under the TARDIS console with other Doctors. Suddenly, the Doctor jumped up.

“Aha!” He grinned, grabbing onto the blueprints. “I think I found a solution.”

Luna sighed. “You do realise that exile means exile, don’t you, Doctor?”

The Doctor ignored her, returning to the TARDIS to try and fix the circuits. Luna followed him into the machine.

“C’mon, Doc, I’ve only met this version of you one time.” Luna said, “And both times that I’ve met you, you’re more focused on science-y things.”

“What’s wrong with science-y things?” The Doctor asked, going under the TARDIS console. 

“N-Nothing…” Luna frowned, as immediately, the electronic shock snapped through her body as the Doctor was quickly stunned and the machine burst into sparks and smoke. 

He pulled back out, looking quite exhausted, but with a somewhat annoyed tone to his face and voice. Luna sat down next to him, as he sat up, placing his head in his chin.

“I thought I’d found a solution.” He frowned, “Maybe I just pressed the wrong button…”

Luna cleared her throat, interrupting his musing.

“Don’t you want me to get to know you, Doc?” She asked, “This you. I’ve met the two before, and the many after… But I don’t know anything about you. It’s just Venusian Aikido and cars, and looking like James Bond but even more queer.”

She looked over at the Doctor, with a raised brow.

“Could you teach me how to drive Bessie?”

The Doctor looked appalled. “No, absolutely not–”

“C’mon, Doc, I promise I won’t break her!” She said. “Pinky swear. Like… ‘Cause I died before I could get my learner's permit…”

She was giving him puppy dog eyes, and also using the ‘I died before I could do this important thing’. The Doctor grumbled, looking away from her as she continued to speak, but this time, she was speaking his language.

“It would make the Brig really mad…” She said in a sing-song voice, causing the Doctor to beam for the first time since she’d met this version of him.

“Right.” He grinned. “I’m certain that Bessie is outside. Are you ready to learn how to drive?”

After Luna nearly crashed Bessie into UNIT HQ, and both she and the Doctor got a very angry ultimatum from the Brigadier - which mostly was ‘Liz leaves for 5 minutes and you two go off and do that?’ - Luna smiled, smugly and satisfied. She still probably wouldn’t learn who this Doctor was… But hey. At least he was a good driving instructor.

the  following  is  a  list  of  plots  i’d  really  love  to  explore

#1.  raven’s  relationship  with  her  own  intelligence.         she  has  always  been  smart,         smarter  than  almost  everyone  around  her.         but  until  she  encountered  allie/becca...         she  wasn't  what  she  is  now:         A  ONCE  IN  A  GENERATION  MAYBE  EVEN  ONCE  IN  A  CENTURY  GENIUS,         the  kind  of  mind  which  can  redefine  humanity.         she  is  that  now,  but  in  the  back  of  her  head  there's  this  voice  telling  her  that  now  even  her  brilliance  isn't  really  her  own.        

on  this  note,         i’d  really  like  to  explore  other  characters’s  perspective  on  her  intelligence  &+  how  allie/becca  added  to  it.  

i’d  also  like  to  explore  dynamics  with  other  extremely  intelligent  characters  on  the  show...         becca,         gabriel,         josiephine,         ect.

#2.  I’D  LIKE  TO  EXPLORE  HOW  PEOPLE  REACT  TO  RAVEN’S  JUDGMENT.          she  has  very  high,         often  times  impossible  moral  standards  &+  she  isn’t  subtle  about  them.         how  do  other  muses  feel  about  the  way  she  judges  their  choices.   #3.  raven  is  able  to  maintain  her  high  moral  standards  often  because  she  isn’t  the  one  of  making  a  decision  WHEN  THERE  ARE  NO  GOOD  CHOICES.         i’d  love  to  see  her  confronted  with  this,         or  put  in  the  position  where  she  has  to  make  the  decision.   #4.  this  is  specifically  for  spacekru,          ESPECIALLY  ECHO.          i’d  love  to  explore  plots  having  to  do  with  raven  training  &+  how  she  gained  defense  skills  &+  HOW  THAT  MADE  HER  FEEL.         being  in  control  of  her  body  is  something  big  for  raven  &+  seeing  her  become  stronger  in  her  own  form,           without  erasing  her  injuries  &+  pain  is  really  beautiful.   #5.  emori  &+  raven’s  relationship!           i  want  to  get  into  this! #6.  LUNA   &+  RAVEN’S  RELATIONSHIP!            also,  other  characters  perspective  on  it  after  luna’s  death.   #7.  raven’s  dynamic  with  bellamy  &+  how  it’s  grown  over  time.          i’m  also  interested  in  how  both  of  them  view  the  time  they  slept  together.          (i’m  not  against  shipping  them  but  i  also  really  want  to  look  at  this  from  a  standpoint  of  them  growing  close  platonically  after  having  had  a  sexual  encounter.) #8.  raven  lashing  out  at  the  people  who  first  went  to  sanctum  over  shaw’s  death.          HER  DEEP  GRIEF  FOR  THIS  BLOSSOMING  LOVE,          this  wonderful  man.

#9.  spacekru  relationships  &+  how  they  were  when  they  arrived  on  the  ring  versus  WHAT  THEY  BECAME  OVER  THE  NEXT  SIX  YEARS.   #10.  CLARKE  AND  RAVEN’S  DYNAMIC!          we  see  them  class  for  obvious  reasons,          but  they  also  have  a  very  apparent  bond  which  isn’t  discussed  very  often.           i  want  to  work  on  how  they  relate  and  what  draws  them  together   &+  makes  them  care  for  each  other  DESPITE  THE  TENSIONS  BETWEEN  THEM.

NEW MUSE! INTRODUCING SELENE SHAW – WEREWOLF!

:: General Info ::

Cursed generations upon generations ago by the St. Clair witches, the Shaws are a family of werewolves. Typical lore applies, in regards to the full moon and silver (more on lore at a later date/post), but the family is semi-nomadic due to their nature as wolves. Neighbors and other mortals have come to believe they’re more a military family, or just have to move for company reasons, and the family hasn’t done anything to dissuade this notion. (In fact, there have been members who’ve served in the armed forces at times in the long career of the Shaws. Despite (or maybe because of) their wolf nature.) 

Selene was actually born on a night where the moon was almost full, in a cloudless night sky, hence her name being chosen at that time, right in the moment. The moonlight was shining into the room where her mother was, and inspiration, as Mrs. Shaw stated, struck. Instantly. Selene’s just happy she wasn’t called Luna--so unoriginal, in her words. 

In general, the activation of their wolf side happens around puberty, and it takes those good few first years to learn to control the “animal within” and understand the strengths (and weaknesses) of being a wolf. Selene’s first transformation wasn’t the easiest, as she’d gotten free from her restraints (she was a smaller wolf and the restraints weren’t made right for her) and slipped into the next neighborhood over. 

Animal control was called over a wild wolf wandering the streets at that time, but by the time they showed up, those who ���knew what was up” had helped Selene get back with her family and out of potential trouble. Well, deeper trouble, anyway. 

Selene has made it through her education, and she likes to travel--a lot. She’s a photographer and an artist, a free spirit. Perhaps it has something to do with her nature as a wolf, the inner part of her that connects so well to the freedom of the natural world. Her senses are higher, more alert, when she’s not being polluted in the cities. And currently, Selene dwells in Small Town, USA, a place in the mid-south with her family not too far away. 

At least, that’s the way it is when she’s at home. Not traveling around the country and world for her photography trips. Freelancing she may be, but it pays what she needs it to. An only child, Selene grew up in a (fairly) loving home. Her uncle was the alpha of their pack, until he was killed suddenly when she was only six years old. Barely a few months after that, her father had gone off to avenge his brother’s murder. 

He was never heard or seen from again, either, leaving Selene alone with her mother--and the other pack members. Her father’s friend, Xavier, soon took over as pack alpha, and helped take care of and watch out for Selene and her mother. She viewed him as an older brother, protector of sorts, just as he’d always seen her as a kid sister. Someone to watch over...
