Bloodstock 2024 - Friday
Green Lung [7] were playing as we came into the arena, I knew none of of their material but the crowd was absolutely nuts. Their frontman was unrelenting in his requests from that crowd and my God did he get it. That level of confidence and authority on stage is a rare sight in the modern age, these guys are going somewhere.
Grand Magus [6] have been in this game a long time, the Swedes are still kicking around hard after all that time and it’s a great thing to see. My rating may be lower but that’s by no means a reflection on their ability more about the fact there has been so much talent on display today and the other guys just had that sheer volume of energy.
Hatebreed [8] are celebrating 30 years! Holy crap. Only band of the day with pyro and their huge inflatable ball of death (which gave so many hilarious moments, I can only imagine the fear of the entire VIP area as this huge thing came barrelling over the fence straight at them). The intro package including the likes of Ice T and Randy Blythe (amongst many more legends) giving the ‘Breed their props for a monumental career so far. I have 0 complaints with the setlist, 15 great tracks, this could have easily been a headline set. Let’s pray for another 30 years!
Clutch [7] are as simple as they come in terms of setup, but what they do with that setup every time is beauty in its purest form, they hit a few rare tracks which is always an amazing thing for the diehard fans, but was was more impressive was the fact that so many people knew all the words to them! The Clutch crew are all clearly here in force today. My only issue was being desperate to hear “Electric Worry” and “50,000 Unstoppable Watts” however the fact they don’t just play the hits every time and we got a huge 18 song setlist was just better.
Opeth [7] have had a career that absolutely justifies this headline set, absolutely no doubt. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen them (2008 Defenders of the Faith if I’m not mistaken), so it’s a pleasure to hear “Ghost of Perdition” live again. The show is a primarily visual experience with trippy art glazing the screens, the only issue I have is I think I was expecting more showmanship but it was Opeth being Opeth, between tracks there was no rushing there was calm and relaxation. The set was 8 tracks long, which looks so funny however their tracks are so long it’s all you can squeeze in which is a shame in a way, they need to do more evenings with shows.
