My Impressions of Marseille
October 15, 2023 My impressions of the city developed over two days in Marseille. We took a flight from Ottawa to Paris and then to Marseille with Air France, left Ottawa at five p.m., and arrived in Marseille the following day at 9 a.m. After spending a day in Marseille, we left for Corsica for ten days before returning for another day in Marseille. I found some information about Marseille on…

my huge gripe w modern httyd aus is that it’s always set in the suburban midwest in podunk nothing town without taking it to its natural conclusion. As if berk would not be a steel mill town on the rust belt with the gas prices jacked sky high for tourists driving through the middle of nowhere. As if the barbaric archipelago would be the suburbs of a big city rather than rural towns in the Deep South. as if hiccup would not somehow end up hiking in the appalachias or turn up half dead after missing for 6months in the oregon wilderness. Cowards. Fools. if you’re setting it in america then you should take it to its natural conclusion 🗣️🗣️🗣️
#mochis mumbles#httyd#im jesting. For the most part#but seriously look me in the eye and say with a straight face that hiccup is a city boy#or he’s from suburban america#i’ll laugh in your face. stoick and gobber shriek at hiccup if he isn’t awake by sunrise and the cows haven’t been fed. Etc.#he would totally only go to the city when he hits his college years…..then it’s his devil wears prada era (i am dragged offstage)#anyway but my gripe is mainly the american-centric nature of modern aus#which I mean. fanfic is for fun. but multiculturalism is cool too

I’m not personally a headcanonner of Maglor living in Rivendell in LotR under a new name, but if he is, I adamantly believe that he is not Lindir (“song guy”) but rather Erestor (tentatively glossed “lonely brother.”) Tragic humor or bust!
#Maglor#the silmarillion#lotr#feanor and feanor’s kin#erestor#lindir#MY preferred erestor is from nargothrond; so Elrond’s chief counselors include someone from each big hidden city of beleriand#(both multicultural noldor-sindarin cities too!)#(the other being glorfindel obv)#I also love half-elf ‘kinsman’ of elrond!erestor so in total#one of his parents was avari and the other haladrim but the man (gender-neutral) died just after he was born#so the elf took him to live in Nargothrond and he grew up elvish#though not as safe as hoped - the city fell only a couple decades later#(I don’t stand for cross-species marriage and children befofe B&L)#so he and elrond are like fifth cousins through the house of haleth and they’re both like ‘YEAH THAT COUNTS’#lindir I have no strong opinion on but I read a fic where he was a nice young man (species-neutral) from mirkwood and I liked that

I’m going to hold your hand when I say this but some of you need to realize that if Devin Grayson used racist stereotypes in Nightwing 1996 writing Dick and Yoska then she was also using racist stereotypes writing Catalina Flores
the concept of an aggressive, sexually predatory Latina is not new, it’s not original, and frankly it’s tiring to see be repeated
acting like the way Catalina was/is portrayed in canon/fanworks is totally divorced from her ethnicity is how we get fics where Dick is triggered by hearing someone speak spanish (not even the specific pet names that Cat used, just spanish in general??!)
and I like Catalina as an antagonist, at least a secondary one, I think the Blockbuster arc has held up well compared to some other runs, I think that Devin is a decent writer with pretty good pacing for comic books which I can appreciate, and shockingly, I’m fine with the rape taking place in canon and the aftermath, as I know that the run was cut short (I’m a dead-dove fan and I’ve always liked any kind of whump, I can see why others don’t though and I understand that)
I also think that fanwriters need to be aware of bigoted source material, and that they don’t need to exacerbate these problems by flattening Catalina into a hypersexual, “crazy Latina” caricature which Devin even didn’t fully do in her run
I promise guys, there is a way to write her that doesn’t lean into stereotypes but still has her doing a terrible thing, I pinky swear
#nightwing 96#catalina flores#devin grayson#I am genuinely glad that people are quick to point out the anti-roma stereotypes used#but people are very quick to accept that Catalina is just like that- no influence from racism she’s just an evil bitch#i still can’t get over how someone wrote dick being literally triggered by someone speaking spanish around him#like he didn’t live in new york. like gotham and bludhaven aren’t large multicultural cities…#I have tips for rewrites if anyone needs them#pleading and begging#this is part of an ongoing trend of people treating female antagonist like static events that happened instead of people making a choice

Singapore's History and Heritage: A Walk Through Time
Nestled at the crossroads of Southeast Asia, Singapore is a city-state with a rich tapestry of history and cultural heritage that dates back centuries. From its humble beginnings as a fishing village to becoming a global economic powerhouse, Singapore has undergone a remarkable transformation. Today, the city-state stands as a testament to the harmonious coexistence of tradition and modernity. While exploring the key milestones that have shaped Singapore's history and heritage, visitors can also indulge in various things to do in Pai and experience the vibrant scene of shopping in Thailand.
Early Days: A Fishing Village to a Trading Hub
Singapore's story begins in the 14th century when it was a mere fishing village known as Temasek. It wasn't until the arrival of Sang Nila Utama, a Sumatran prince, in the 13th century that the island gained prominence. The prince renamed the island "Singapura," which means "Lion City" in Sanskrit after he allegedly spotted a lion on its shores. Although lions never roamed the island, the name stuck, symbolizing strength and courage.
In the 19th century, Singapore's strategic location at the crossroads of major shipping routes attracted the attention of European powers. Sir Stamford Raffles, the founder of modern Singapore, established a British trading post in 1819. This marked the beginning of Singapore's rapid ascent as a crucial trading hub in the region.
Colonial Era and World War II:
Under British colonial rule, Singapore flourished economically, becoming a melting pot of cultures due to its strategic location and open trade policies. However, the prosperity was interrupted during World War II when the Japanese occupied Singapore from 1942 to 1945. The war left an indelible mark on the island, with the Battle of Singapore being a pivotal moment in its history. After the war, Singapore went through a period of recovery and reconstruction.
Independence and Nation-Building:
The desire for self-governance gained momentum in the post-war era, leading to the formation of the People's Action Party (PAP) in 1954. Led by Lee Kuan Yew, the PAP advocated for independence from British rule and social reforms. Singapore achieved self-governance in 1959 and joined the Federation of Malaysia in 1963. However, the union was short-lived, and Singapore gained full independence on August 9, 1965, due to political differences with Malaysia.
Lee Kuan Yew became the first Prime Minister of Singapore and embarked on a nation-building journey characterized by economic development, social cohesion, and multiracial harmony. The transformation was remarkable, turning Singapore from a developing nation into a first-world city-state within a single generation.
Cultural Diversity: Harmony in Diversity
One of the defining features of Singapore is its multicultural society. The island is a mosaic of different ethnicities, including Chinese, Malay, Indian, and various other communities. This diversity is not only evident in the population but also in the architecture, cuisine, and traditions that permeate the city.
Chinatown, Little India, and Kampong Glam are iconic districts that showcase the cultural richness of their respective communities. Visitors can explore the vibrant markets, temples, mosques, and churches, experiencing firsthand the harmonious coexistence of different faiths and traditions. The annual celebrations of festivals such as Chinese New Year, Deepavali, Hari Raya Puasa, and Christmas further highlight the multicultural tapestry of Singapore.
Preserving Heritage: Museums and Historic Sites
To truly understand Singapore's history and heritage, a visit to its museums and historic sites is essential. The National Museum of Singapore provides a comprehensive overview of the island's past through interactive exhibits and artifacts. Fort Canning Park, with its archaeological sites and lush greenery, offers a glimpse into Singapore's colonial history.
Changi Chapel and Museum pay homage to the prisoners of war during World War II, while the Peranakan Museum celebrates the unique Peranakan culture, born from the intermingling of Chinese and Malay influences. These sites not only preserve the historical significance but also serve as educational platforms for future generations.
Modern Singapore: A Global City-State
In the latter half of the 20th century, Singapore transitioned from a trading post to a global economic powerhouse. Its commitment to education, innovation, and infrastructure development propelled the nation into the ranks of the world's most developed countries. The skyline of Singapore reflects its modernity, with iconic structures like the Marina Bay Sands and Gardens by the Bay becoming symbols of the city-state's progress.
Conclusion:
Singapore's history and heritage are intertwined with resilience, diversity, and a forward-looking spirit. As visitors traverse the city-state, they embark on a journey through time, witnessing the transformation from a humble fishing village to a global metropolis. Singapore's ability to preserve its cultural roots while embracing progress serves as an inspiration for nations worldwide. A walk through the Lion City is not just a stroll through its bustling streets but a fascinating exploration of a nation's evolution, where history and heritage seamlessly coalesce.

shame american radios don't play music from non-english speaking artists or music from other countries. imagine how much more open-minded we could be if we turned on the radio & a song in spanish or japanese or arabic or russian or german or hindi or mandarin or yoruba or zulu or swahili or thai or french or norwegian or korean or portuguese or italian or polish or turkish or hebrew or czech came on. like it was no big deal. like it was just another song on the radio. imagine if we decentered english and actually embraced multiculturalism
#like gaurenteed if more americans — ESPECIALLY those that live in rural areas or areas that arent multicultural such as big cities —#were exposed to different languages and cultures through something like music#it would be harder to breed xenophobia and racism

i've probably said this before, but i will never forget the couple times that i've spoken on racism, barely three to four sentences, only to be bothered for days by non-black ppl who couldn't handle the idea that antiblackness exists.
#ray says#i already dont speak on it a lot cus my main thing is complaining abt relational and identity stuff#and this website is very american centric so african american ppl's experience of racism is v different from what i experience-#-living in the multicultural city of a country whose ppl pride themself on ''being better than the us'' (eye roll)#but it rly shows sometimes that you're just not allowed to speak on antiblackness. in any way.

Yeah what? You've been really clear that NEITHER is the wife, because they're both cis men. And I agree that people can get a little weirdly hung up on one of them being the woman, somehow, which feels different from exploring "feminine" qualities either or both might have.
Thank you, and yeah. It does feel like a pretty selective and bad faith reading of what I've written, and I kinda suspect from how they've written what they have that they might be an anon who's sent me a few asks now? Which leaves me a little bemused that anyone might follow this blog that specifically for haterism given I'm pretty under the radar in this fandom, haha.
#i have BEEN a bnf before i never want to be again and i am deliberately trying not to be in this fandom in any way that creates discourse#i'm just here in my little sandbox#barely using main tags outside of reblogs#and writing some fics haha#but look idk#the whiff of an accusation of racism gets so weaponised in fandom#and i think at least some of the time it relies on the idea that being called racist is enough to either 'expose' someone#or rely on white people to get so uncomfortable as to shut down a conversation (which we do!)#the fandom i was a bnf in - it was DEFINITELY a factor#so i've had a number of these conversations before in fandom spaces but also like#i live in melbourne which is one of the most multicultural and diverse cities in the world#and i work in the arts#i think conversations about race with my friends and co-workers and clients and writers i work with - many of whom aren't white#come up every day for me#i can of course never know their experiences and i know I have my own racial biases i am consciously addressing#but honestly i don't feel that uncomfortable talking about race anymore because i am literally having these convos all the time irl#so yeah i guess re: that anon i really am happy to both hear you and talk about it?#but at the same time asks like that...#look i try to take it in good faith instead of bad
