Just in case it ever comes up, I guess, here's a quick primer on common Japanese teas:
The kind of green tea we usually drink in the US is called sencha, though it's the default tea in Japan so if you're there, they're probably just calling it ocha, or tea. If you're steeping plain green tea leaves in hot water, it's sencha. It's also generally what bottled/iced green tea is, unless otherwise specified.
(Sencha)
Matcha, on the other hand, is a powder that's made by grinding up tea leaves. It's generally made with very high-grade tea leaves that have not been rolled before grinding. This is whisked with a little bit of hot water during tea ceremonies to create a fairly thick, strong, frothy tea. This is often consumed with sweets to offset the bitterness. Culinary-grade matcha is also often used as an ingredient in snacks, desserts, lattes, etc.
Note: not all powdered tea is matcha! There is also a type of powdery "instant" sencha as well as a cheap semi-powdered kind that's popular at quick service restaurants. I believe it's usually made from leftover/broken fragments from the sencha production process. It tastes pretty much like normal sencha, not matcha. It just has a bit less flavor than normal sencha.
(Matcha)
Genmaicha is essentially sencha but with puffed, roasted rice in it. It looks like popcorn! It has a toastier flavor than sencha, but not a dark, tannic flavor like you get in most western teas. It tends to look a little more brownish-yellow when brewed.
(Genmaicha)
Hōjicha is a roasted tea, but again, it's lighter and nuttier tasting than typical black tea. You see it a lot in the fall, and it's super cozy. Tastes and looks similar to genmaicha when brewed, but darker and stronger.
(Hōjicha)
And finally, mugicha is a caffeine-free barley tea. It tastes... honestly, a little bit like corn...? Like if you just soaked popcorn in water for a while, maybe.
It's popular throughout Asia but tends to be a little less popular with tourists than the other teas. This is generally served cold, in my experience, and is supposed to be healthy for you when it's hot out.
(Mugicha)
There are way, way more kinds than this, but these are the ones you're probably going to see most often.
Personally, I usually drink iced sencha and hot genmaicha, but it's really up to your personal taste! You'll also see western-style black tea (kōcha) and oolong tea a lot in Japan, both hot and iced!
#personally I do not care for mugicha but it was given to me a lot when people heard that I'm prone to overheating lmao#it's supposed to be good for you...?#but at what cost...

i’m not sure if you’ve been asked this before but, what are your favorite teas? how do you usually drink tea? i’m a coffee lover thru and thru but i want to incorporate more tea into my daily rituals as well. i’d love to see your favorite mug to drink tea in too, if you have one :’) ? thank you.

I haven't been asked yet! This is fun, I love talking tea. I indulge in both coffee and tea. I work at a cafe so I drink coffee when I work but, outside of that I primarily drink tea. Tea time in the evening, right before bed is perfect or during an afternoon lull. My favorite way to have tea is loose leaf although I do reach for a tea bag every now and then. I think Trader Joes has the most wonderful teabags, their peppermint sleep tea during the holiday season is delicious. Usually however I drink loose leaf tea. Ginger root, gyokuro asahi, hojicha, barley/mugicha, and matcha are favorites. My job sells loose leaf tea so I'm fortunate in that I don't need to search for it but with a good Google search it should be relatively easy to source. About my favorite cup/mug, I've just gotten this new cup it's a Chemex coffee cup but works wonderful for tea, keeps it nice and hot. Not to mention it's just so sleek. I also have a Miffy mug I adore but try not to use it too much as it's chipped up pretty bad :/ I hope you find more time for tea :)

eye: yes, an excuse to have a little snack is another positive quality of tea that I'm discovering
dev: funny now that you mention it I have had barley tea before a long time ago, because
actually wait I played this process through in my head and it is a way too long tangent that begins "so years ago when I randomly generated a name for my ffxiv character..." that eventually leads to the present day and then presumably continues through various domino falls until I retire as a gongfu teamaster in my mansion in the mountains or something
anyway yeah that sounds good, and easy to do in my workplace mini fridge if need be lol
been trying to learn how to enjoy tea lately, which has meant I'm trying various ones with the possibility that I might not like the taste. One good thing about tea is that if it tastes bad you can just add lemonade or some other delicious drink. this replaces bad taste with good taste. but the key thing, and this is the true versatility that I admire, is that in a pinch you could also use water, which reduces the bad taste simply by increasing the proportion of no taste
#actually maybe it's not so long#named my character mugi#got nicknamed mugicha#got curious and tried some#surprisingly didn't hate it#heart thereafter opened to the possibility of liking tea

Aren't you up early?
I'll take them (to the table).

Note: Their discussion of "stylishness" is tied to being fashionable/cool/trendy, which Ryota struggles with. (I think this is also related to how different Kazuhito seems to be from Ryota, who try as he may, cannot become as effortlessly cool as Kazuhito. On the other hand, Kazuhito seems to like Ryota's naturalness, which Ryota mentions as not having much awareness of fashion or what is fashionable.)
Note: Kazuhito uses the rude casual form to tell Eri to stop asking Ryota for his contact information, which is a departure from the usual polite casual form, which he tends to use.
Note: A family restaurant is as the term suggests, a restaurant that caters to families and younger people. A big draw of these restaurants is the affordability of food and convenience of these restaurants, because many family restaurants are chains and some of the restaurants are open 24 hours. In other words, they aren't fancy or stylish and aren't special or nice, which is what Ryota's sisters are protesting about. (More info)
Yoshida was working there first and the conditions were good, so she told me about/introduced me to the job. Note: Kazuhito refers to Eri by her surname, Yoshida
I'll treat you. Alright? Note: Kazuhito tends to use "na" when he's trying to persuade Ryota to do something
Well, even I wasn't tough/strong enough to deal with that.
Could you touch this?
Would you be able to kiss me/are you able to kiss me?

Hello! For the ask game: 🍪☕🌴??? Rose💜
🍪 If you were a cookie, what kind would you be?
This is a tough one for me. I like to bake, so I have too many ideas here. But I think I’ve settled on one.
If I were a cookie, I think I’d be a “magic bar” a.k.a. a “seven layer bar.” It serves the purpose of a cookie and can take on the role of one, but it isn’t a cookie in the strictest sense so it doesn’t quite fit in. It’s kind of trashy in a mid-20th century way, like something you’d find in one of those cookbooks put out as fundraisers by churches and civic groups. (Is that an American thing, or did they have those everywhere? They were big when I was a kid in the 80s.) It’s kind of like the cookie equivalent of a casserole made with condensed soup or those notorious Jell-O salads.
It’s not so much made as cobbled together, like a weird take on trail mix got glued together with sweetened condensed milk and pressed into a graham cracker (or crushed cookie) crust. Sometimes people go a little wild and put pretzels or corn flakes in it. It has a sort of bored-housewife-trying-to-be-creative vibe that could be endearing or a bit cringe-y depending on how you think about it.
The magic bar is kind of old, kind of weird, and doesn’t go about things in the usual way. It looks pretty funky. It comes at you with a conglomeration of textures. In short, it’s a bit much. But it can be surprisingly compelling. Sometimes it unexpectedly wins over a diehard food snob or gets reinvented by a hip young chef (who you just know was probably high at the time). There’s a weird little kid at the potluck who keeps going back for one more. The magic bar actually has a lot to offer if you can look past your first impressions.
In case folks aren’t familiar with these things, here’s a classic version and here’s a fancier variation. Maybe I should try one of those recipes or even make up my own variation, in true bored suburban mom style.
☕ Coffee or tea?
I can’t do caffeine in significant quantities—it gives me migraines, not to mention being kind of a lot on top of my ADHD meds—so no coffee or black tea for me. Occasionally I have decaf but it makes me shockingly hyper.
But I’m a big ginger tea drinker lately. I had a barley tea (mugicha) phase a while back. I like rooibos chai, fruity herbal tea, and iced hibiscus. And sometimes I drink hojicha (roasted green tea), which is low in caffeine but has lots of L-theanine, the stuff in tea that makes you feel relaxed.
My ginger thing involves steeping sliced fresh ginger for at least 20 minutes and adding lemon juice, cane sugar, and yuzu “tea” (it’s more like yuzu jam/marmalade that dissolves in the water and has peel bits that kind of steep in the water as well). It’s lovely. Honestly, just writing this makes me want to make some right now. Which I might do.
🌴 Desert island item?
I’m indecisive and not great at packing light, so I’m terrible at picking this sort of thing. But I’ll try.
Actually, the first thing that comes to mind is a white noise machine. I can hardly sleep without one anymore. My family and I have had two power outages recently that lasted multiple days and both times, being without white noise messed up my sleep really badly.
