JAPAN TRIP - DAYS 11 & 12

Yesterday, we took a break after our little trip to Nikko, and we relaxed at our hotel in Tokyo.

Today, we ventured to Yokohama. We had the opportunity to ride the magnificent Cosmo Clock 21 (コスモクロック21). With a remarkable outer diameter of 100 meters, this wheel boasts 60 gondolas that complete a full circle every 15 minutes, it's awesome. From up there, the view was breathtaking, encompassing the Landmark Tower, three Queen's towers, various hotels, Yokohama Bay, Haneda airport, the Red Brick Warehouses, Osanbashi Pier, the Marine Tower, Yamashita Park, and if luck was on your side, even glimpses of the Mt. Fuji! It was a delightful experience, and I fell in love with the city itself 💕💝

BIONICLE Science: The Heights of the Mangai Volcano and Mt. Ihu

So, when I was looking for reference images of the Island of Mata-Nui for my next Knowledge Tower video, I found this image, which I think is the only view we ever get of the full island from sea level, rather than a shot from above. It’s a really neat image, the only one I know of where you can clearly see the heights of Mt. Ihu and the Mangai volcano. And that gave me an idea - I could use this image alongside the canon length of the island of Mata-Nui to determine the heights of both!

So that’s what I did:

The island is canonically 489.09 km long, making each pixel in this image roughly 2.26km.

Mt Ihu is 17 pixels above sea level here, with the Mangai volcano being slightly shorter at 15 pixels above sea level. This means that:

Mt. Ihu = 38.49km tall

Mangai volcano = 33.96km tall

For context, not only are both of these taller than the highest mountain on Earth, Mount Everest (4.35x taller and 3.84x taller respectively) these are even taller than the highest mountain in the whole solar system - Olympus Mons on Mars! (Which is 25km tall, making Ihu 1.54x taller and The Mangai 1.36x taller)

Welcome to Mt. Cavaro! Pt. 2

This mountain plateau was once nothing but a small seasonal hunting town. Over the last 50 years however, developers took notice of the potential of this location and now, it is a bustling upcoming town. Families and sims have moved in droves to start business opportunities or to take advantage of those who are. Some however, are just enjoying the quiet scenic views and good people.

Time to show the families! There are 14 households I will be playing rotationally. I will show them in the order I will play them.

I will be playing wants based, so the sims have to want something for me to do it. (eg: teen sims will not go to uni unless they have the want to on the day of their age up). I will make some of my own choices for the sims when I see fit, like for example: Vera Flast has the OTH of Music & Dance, so I will pursue the dance career as that is what I believe she would do. Both her and Arthur must go to university because they are from a wealthy family that would enforce this.

LTWs can change up until the sim is 10 days deep in adulthood. Because IRL you wouldn't know what you want forever when you're 15. So it's subject to change if I feel the old LTW doesn't reflect the sim.

I am using custom lifespans:

Babies: 5 days

Toddlers: 10 days

Child: 14 days

Teenagers: 22 days

Adults: 40 days

Elders: 9-30 days

If elders pass away after only 9 days, they would have lived 100 days exactly, if they live to the full 30 days, they will die at 120 days.

Thats all my Families in Mt. Cavaro! Sorry for another terribly long post- hopefully this doesn't become a habit.

IMPORTANT! Alot of my sims appearances and names are inspired by real world cultures. A lot of these names are real names in said cultures, most of which I am not educated on fully. So if I am using a sims name in an inappropriate or incorrect way- PLEASE let me know so I can fix it asap and if you are able, maybe give me a suggestion of what to change it to :)

I dont exactly know yet how I will be formatting my posts on what happens in each rotation. I could make a post for each individual families week, but that might bog down this blog. The other option is to do a full rotation and post all families in one big post, but that might mean some posts are few and far between. Please give your opinions!

Also, a sidenote: I am INCREDIBLY burnt out from all the building and decorating of this entire hood. So I will not be building my own University/College subhood. I am debating whether or not to just use a Maxis one or looking for one someone else has made that fits the aesthetics of my hood. I will let you guys know in an update post in the near future :)

Japan day 7 (11/16)

More Hakone and then Tokyo!

Started by trying to watch the sunrise from the onsen. We mostly missed the actual sunrise but it was still really pretty

We then got breakfast in the room which was this cute little bento box.

We then went back up the ropeway and it was so clear and we got a great view of mt Fuji! One of the legs up we even got a car to ourselves which was cool and the views were great.

We then tried to get a picture with the water Tori gate, but the line was crazy long and so slow moving so we took a quick pic from the side and moved on. But I still got a cute pic by an adorable bridge! Sadly my eyes were closed so you get the slightly blurry Live Photo from when they were open 🤷‍♀️

When we finally made it Tokyo station I got dipping ramen and it was the best ramen I ever had and it was like 7 dollars which is crazy.

I also found this adorable penguin in a Christmas tree which I managed to not buy the first time but then went back later to get it 😂

We then wandered around took in the city views and the lake in park. We got drinks at this adorable owl themed brewery my bf likes and then got dinner and then magi carp custard for dessert

Day 7

In the morning we try to catch the sunrise in the onsen. Official sunrise time is 6:18 and we get down there like 6:05 but it’s already pretty light and not very many fun colors. It’s still pretty tho. A little while later the sky gets some nice pink to it.

After we get all our onsen time in we head back up to the room. We still have like an hour before breakfast and finally get some quality time. I am annoyed by how much better this makes me feel, but here we are.

Breakfast is also a lot of fish and I’m over having food I don’t like.

After breakfast we head back to the rooeway. It’s like 9am so it’s pretty empty here and we get a car all to our selves on the way up which is really fun. It’s a clear day today so we can see my Fuji from the rooeway car which is fun too see. It really sticks out above the rest of the landscape. All of the other mountains are full of trees and green on top and then there’s Fuji looming in the background with its giant snow covered peak.

We also get a great view of the sulphuric vents.

When we get to the bottom we go to hike around the lake to a water Tori gate. Some of our way there is on a lovely path through the woods where you can see the lake. And some of it is along the road where you try not to get hit by cars

Try and take pic with the Tori water gate but the line is too long and moves too slowly. Everybody has waited for a while so they want their full photo shoot and it takes like five minutes per group. We don’t want to wait for a picture for like 45 minutes So instead we just take pictures and a selfie from the side and it’s fine.

As we walk back we do cross a really cute bridge and my bf offers (actually offers! ) to take a pic of me on the bridge. I had been wanting a cute bridge pic so I love it.

And then we take a bus and two trains to Tokyo.

We stop at Tokyo station to get ramen. We have to wait in a line for about 15 minutes. Then we quickly order at the vending machine and are seated. The music playing is very fast paced and it feels like everything is rushed. But it is very efficient. We get dipping ramen Where the noodles are in a separate bowl and are cold, and then you dip into the bowl filled with hot broth. It’s so delicious. Sometimes I don’t get the timing of the dip amount right and the noodles end up too hot or too cold but mostly it’s perfect. Anthony paid on his suica card. Mine was 1040 yen. Which is so crazy cheap for the best ramen I’ve ever had.

After we walk through the Tokyo station character street. It’s filled with adorable shops. I find the most precious penguin stuffed animal that’s wearing a Christmas tree and I nearly die of cuteness. (I don’t get it because I do not need a 30 dollar stuffed animal that will just sit in the pile in my room)

There’s also a bear themed store where I find a bear cutout that can be used to make bear shaped pancakes or omelette a. And at 1300 yen I have to have it.

We head to the hotel to check in and then walk around the streets. I think walking around the streets of Tokyo is one of my favorite parts of the trip. They are all lined with so many little stores and there are just people everywhere bustling about. The streets are all really clean and everyone is really polite. Like the queues for things are always so well organized even when they aren’t marked it’s remarkable.

We do laundry at our hotel and then head out to izakaya, which is a Japanese things where you get drinks and grilled items, small plates style usually for sharing. They typically require at least one drink and food item per person. It’s so weird to me that there are places in Japan that will require you to order a drink. It doesn’t have to be alcoholic but as someone who rarely orders drinks and almost never non alcohol with meals it’s a bit odd to me. It’s usually places that are really busy.

The place we go to seems rather American food themed but all of the other people in there are Japanese and not tourists. Our waiter tho has excellent English. I get a mango beer and Anthony gets about her highball, his favorite Japanese thing. And we get garlic bread and a meat sample plate. There’s way too much food and we struggle to make it through most of it. Anthony keeps pushing for us to eat more because he’s convinced it looks bad or something to not eat most of it or is wasteful. I’ve clearly been spending too much time on the intuitive eating side of Instagram so I’m just like my body is not a trash can. Also if I’m too full for it to taste good why bother eating it? We eventually give up on it and head back to the hotel.

FOCUS AND LITURGY OF THE WORD

Life in all of its fullness with family, careers, travel, as well as beginnings, transitions, and endings brings at times feelings of deep weariness, fatigue, and tiredness. A view of someone’s life from the outside can often be misjudged; a reminder that appearances can be deceiving. 

A satisfying career - A satisfying career has often included years of education, multiple changes in jobs, relocations, a plethora of difficult projects, management of complex work relationships.

Each obstacle has built character, resilience, and discipline.

A well adjusted happy family -  Well adjusted happy families have worked hard on their relationships…perhaps there has been a history of deceit, deception, rejection and bitterness. However their faith in God has enabled them to forgive, to seek help with their relationships and to continue to love each other. 

Financial security - Financial security is rare for most individuals/families. Many have had experiences such as bankruptcy, loss of possessions, loss of jobs, inability to support their children.  Financial security was built over time. Their experiences teaching them valuable lessons. 

Meaningful friendships - Meaningful friendships are a true gift. These friendships were often built from painful experiences of losing friends due to selfishness, lack of attention, and lack of nurturing. Each loss brought new insights and learnings. To keep friends you must be a friend. 

In these circumstances the prophet Isiah 26 in the Old Testament and Matthew 11 in the New Testament reminds us to remember God’s love and willingness to bear our burdens which promises to provide us with strength and hope. As faithful believers in God - strength lies in converting our faith to action by caring, loving and helping our family, friends, and neighbors.  

Isaiah 26 reminds us to rely on the strength that God offers.

Matthew 11 reminds us to give Jesus our burdens.

"Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened,

and I will give you rest.

Take my yoke upon you and learn from me,

for I am meek and humble of heart;

and you will find rest for yourselves.

Saint Camillus de Lellis

(1550 – July 14, 1614)

Saint Camillus de Lellis’ Story

Humanly speaking, Camillus was not a likely candidate for sainthood. His mother died when he was a child, his father neglected him, and he grew up with an excessive love for gambling. At 17, he was afflicted with a disease of his leg that remained with him for life. In Rome he entered the San Giacomo Hospital for Incurables as both patient and servant, but was dismissed for quarrelsomeness after nine months. He served in the Venetian army for three years.

Then in the winter of 1574, when he was 24, Camillus gambled away everything he had—savings, weapons, literally down to his shirt. He accepted work at the Capuchin friary at Manfredonia, and was one day so moved by a sermon of the superior that he began a conversion that changed his life. He entered the Capuchin novitiate, but was dismissed because of the apparently incurable sore on his leg. After another stint of service at San Giacomo, he came back to the Capuchins, only to be dismissed again, for the same reason.

Again, back at San Giacomo, his dedication was rewarded by his being made superintendent. Camillus devoted the rest of his life to the care of the sick. Along with Saint John of God he has been named patron of hospitals, nurses, and the sick. With the advice of his friend Saint Philip Neri, he studied for the priesthood and was ordained at the age of 34. Contrary to the advice of his friend, Camillus left San Giacomo and founded a congregation of his own. As superior, he devoted much of his own time to the care of the sick.

Charity was his first concern, but the physical aspects of the hospital also received his diligent attention. Camillus insisted on cleanliness and the technical competence of those who served the sick. The members of his community bound themselves to serve prisoners and persons infected by the plague as well as those dying in private homes. Some of his men were with troops fighting in Hungary and Croatia in 1595, forming the first recorded military field ambulance. In Naples, he and his men went onto the galleys that had plague and were not allowed to land. He discovered that there were people being buried alive, and ordered his brothers to continue the prayers for the dying 15 minutes after apparent death.

Camillus himself suffered the disease of his leg through his life. In his last illness, he left his own bed to see if other patients in the hospital needed help.

Reflection

Saints are created by God. Parents must indeed nurture the faith in their children; husbands and wives must cooperate to deepen their baptismal grace; friends must support each other. But all human effort is only the dispensing of divine power. We must all try as if everything depended on us. But only the power of God can fulfill the plan of God—to make us like himself.

Thanks for asking, anon! These are the pericopes commonly referred to as “The Syro-Phoenician Woman” (Mark 7:24–30) and “The Canaanite Woman” (from Matthew 15:21–28)

While interpretation may vary, Jesus response to this woman’s plea to heal her daughter in both tellings strikes me as quite indicative of prejudiced views he didn’t realize he had: “He said to her, ‘Let the children be fed first, for it is not fair to take the children’s food and throw it to the dogs.’” (Mk. 7:27, NRSVue) and “He replied to her, ‘It is not right to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.’” (Mt. 15:26, NRSVue)

The woman responds “‘Sir, even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.’” (Mk. 7:28b, NRSVue) and “‘Yes it is, Lord,’ she said. ‘Even the dogs eat the crumbs from the Master’s table.’” (Mt. 15:27, NRSVue) One may say that the woman isn’t necessarily making the most forceful response to a dehumanizing comment, but she is coming from a position profound disempowerment and she is being “as wise as [a] serpent” in her advocacy for herself and her daughter.

This gets through to Jesus who realizes that he acted quite heinously to someone in dire need, not recognizing the face of God in her’s, and tried to dismiss her concern and her humanity.

15 years in, Everybody's Brewing undergoes a refresh with new labels, a new logo, and several new releases.

[White Salmon, WA, March 6th, 2023]. Everybody’s Brewing, a mid-size brewery out of White Salmon, Washington, announced today that it has completed a major rebranding, first unveiled at their pub in White Salmon, WA on March 4th, 2023. 

Everybody’s Brewing was founded in 2008, on the principles of creating the highest quality craft beer, in a space where everyone would feel welcome. While this ethos remains the same, they wanted to elevate their visual presence to match the quality of their product. The full overhaul of their visual identity will be rolled out across all facets of the business, including packaged products, interior design, and online presence. The launch of the rebrand coincides with the release of four new year-round 12oz cans, and two new seasonal 16oz cans. 

“We’ll still be the same Everybody’s,” said Everybody’s Co-Owner Doug Ellenberger, “but we recognize the importance of keeping our branding fun and relevant. The market has changed a lot in the 14 years since we opened, and we’re keeping up with those changes. We feel the new branding will appeal both to our day-one customers, and folks that haven’t yet thought to give us a try.” Says Ellenberger, “We take a lot of pride in the quality of our beer, and we are also really proud of our new look.”

The former branding, designed in 2008, featured a logo of people standing together with beers in hand – a very literal interpretation of “Everybody’s”. Over the years, the logo remained the same while aspects of artwork on their cans slowly, continuously evolved. This slow evolution allowed the company to grow, but they found the products becoming less cohesive over time. The new branding is not only an effort to tighten up their look, but a chance for the company to define and re-iterate who “Everybody’s Brewing” is, and what they stand for.

“We kicked off this project by exploring the mission and voice of our company, which was a really exciting aspect of the process for us.” Says Co-Owner Christine Ellenberger, “It was a chance to sit down and say ‘Okay, we know who we are, but how do we better define that share it with people?’ In the end, the most important thing was that we stay true to our core values: inclusivity, quality, fun, and community.”

The new branding has a clean, but retro feel, and maintains the playful aspect that Everybody’s is known for. This can be exemplified by 12oz cans of their new “Co-Pilot Pilsner”, featuring a joyful, animated dog hanging out the side of a classic pickup truck window.

Their new logo is a flag with an emblazoned “E”, and new slogan boldly states, “Beer For All.”

Ellenberger noted it’s importance, “The flag was kind of an ironic play; traditionally, they’re used to stake claim or ownership someone or something specific, but our flag stakes claim for everybody. We truly believe that craft beer is a community staple, one that everyone should be able to enjoy. Our new slogan drives that home. We make beer for everybody.”

After a chilly and cloud-covered morning and afternoon, the thick clouds gradually retreated into the horizon, revealing a lovely scene as the warm, evening sunlight cast dark shadows and enveloped the landscape in a golden hue.

This shot was taken looking west from the Koyodai rooftop terrace, where after the clouds dispersed, the Kagikake mountain range came into full view with its foothills leading down into the enchanting Aokigahara Forest plain.

A 7 km (4.35 mi) foot trail, known as the Kagikake Pass (1,589 m/5,213 ft), winds along the ridge of the Kagikake Mountain range stretching from the southwest peak of Mt. Odake to the northern peak of Mt. Onigatake.

Ten Reasons the Catholic Church is the One True Church of Jesus while other Christian groups derive their elements of truth from her fullness.

1. The Bible is a Catholic book.

It was Pope Damasus’ Council of Rome in 382 AD which drew up the official list of the books of the Bible. Thus, Luther felt “compelled to concede” that his Protestant Bible was “received” from the Catholic Church. All Christians today trust the authority of the Catholic Church that what they read is the true Word of God and not a false text.

2. The Bible refutes the “Bible alone” principle.

The Bible says that the “Word of the Lord” is “spoken” (Jer 25:3), not just written. St. Paul urged us to “hold to traditions which you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by letter” (2 Thes 2:15). The Bible also tells of a Council’s authority, where Peter settled a doctrinal dispute and declared what “we believe” (Acts 15).

The Bible teaches that not the Bible or the Protestant interpreters of the 16th century and of the present, but “the Church is the pillar and the bulwark of the truth” (1 Tim 3:15). It also warns against “twisted” interpretations of Scriptures (2 Pt 3:16). While the Church has one teaching, there are now 43,000 evangelical groups with 2.3 added daily. Their views on the Trinity, on gays, etc. contradict each other. Since truth (e.g. Jesus is God) cannot be falsehood at the same time, real falsehoods are sadly being taught among these groups.

3. Jesus built his Church on a man he named Rock.

Jesus said “On this rock, I will build my Church and I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven” (Mt 16:18-19). Jesus changed the name of Simon to Petros, Greek for Rock. He gave Petros or Peter, “the keys of the kingdom”, which the Jews knew to be the power of a prime minister of the King and chief teacher (Is 22:22). Jesus told him alone to “feed my sheep” (Jn 21:15-17). The Bible shows him leading the Church.

The early Christians referred to Peter’s Roman Church as “presiding” (Ignatius, 1st -2nd), “of superior origin” and standard of “true Faith” (Irenaeus, 2nd c.), “Chair of Peter”, “the principal” (Cyprian, 2nd-3rd c.), and “the primacy” (Augustine, 4th-5th c.). While the Catholic Church can give evidence of its unbroken link to Jesus and Peter, other Christian groups began their existence with their founders like Luther (1517), J. Smith (1830), and F. Manalo (1914).

4. Jesus and the Church are one.

It is not true the Catholic Church left the true Faith, since the Church is the body of Christ (1 Cor 12:27), and he is inseparable from his body. He promised that “I am with you always” (Mt 28:20), evil “shall not prevail” against his Church (Mt 16:18), and his Spirit “will guide you into all the truth” (Jn 16:13). He told his Church: “He who hears you hears me” (Lk 10:16).

5. The Bible says we are saved “not by faith alone”.

The Bible used Luther’s phrase “by faith alone” only once: “a man is justified by works and not by faith alone” (Jas 2:24). The Bible also says that “what counts is faith working through love” (Gal 5:6). While Catholics and Protestants agree that Jesus alone saves us, Luther in the 16th century inserted without basis the word “alone” in his German translation of Rom 3:28 (“a man is justified by faith”) in order to support his personal interpretation that a Christian is incapable of cooperating with God in his salvation.

6. The Bible and the early Christians believe in purgatory.

As shown in their tombstones, the early Christians followed the Bible: “Pray for the dead that they may be loosed from sins” (2 Mc 12:46), for “nothing unclean can enter heaven” (Rev 21:27). It does not make sense to pray for the dead if they only go, as evangelicals say, either to heaven (with faith in Christ) or to hell (without faith). Jesus spoke about forgiveness in the age to come (Mt 12:32) and St. Paul stated that those judged by God are “saved but as through fire” (1 Cor 3:13-15).

7. The Bible and the early Christians believe in the Catholic sacraments.

Jesus gave the Apostles the power to “forgive sins” (Jn 20:23). Peter taught that “Baptism now saves you” (1 Pt 3:21) and thus is not a mere inciter of faith. The Bible speaks about “anointing the sick with oil” (Jas 5:14-15), two kinds of laying of hands (Acts 8:17; 2 Tim 1:6), and marriage in the Lord (1 Cor 7:39). Jesus repeatedly said that “he who eats my flesh has eternal life”. This is no figure of speech, for he did not give in when “many of his disciples” left due to this “hard saying” (Jn 6:48-68), and St. Paul taught that he who eats the bread unworthily is “guilty of profaning the Lord’s body” (1 Cor 11:28). Ignatius of Antioch said “the Eucharist is the flesh of the Redeemer,” Irenaeus “we receive the bread as Jesus”, and Cyprian “Christ is our bread”.

8. The Catholic Church is salt and light.

Modern secular historians of science, economics, university education, human rights, international law, hospitals and Western art are showing that Catholic priests, scientists and thinkers were behind the foundation and great achievements in these areas, acting as salt and light as Christ foretold (Mt 5:13-14; Woods 2005). In his Church, he still works his miracles: Eucharistic bread turning into blood; appearances of Mary; heroic saints; cures and sacred images that are scientifically unexplained; saints with stigmata, powers of healing, bilocation and prophecy, and incorruptible dead bodies.

9. The Catholic Church is catholic.

Jesus “desires all men to be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth” (1 Tim 2:4), thus his real Church is universal, evangelizing in all parts of the world with more than 1.2 billion members today. Compare this with the 2nd biggest Christian group, the Easter Orthodox Churches with only 230M (1/5 of its size) mainly found in Eastern Europe; the Anglicans 85M (1/16); Southern Baptists 16.3M (1/73), Mormons 14.7M (1/81) and Iglesia ni Cristo 6M (1/200).

10. Jesus and the Bible glorify his mother.

Catholics do not worship Mary, but follow Jesus’ ways. He obeyed the fourth commandment: Honor your father and mother. Honor in Hebrew is kaboda, which means to glorify. The Bible calls Mary “Mother of my Lord” (Lord = God) and says all generations will call her blessed (Lk 1:43.48). It shows that she is the New Ark of the Covenant, the woman clothed with the sun, crowned in heaven with twelve stars (Rev 11:19-12:1). To honor his mother, Jesus’ last message to us on the cross is: Behold, your mother (Jn 19:27).
