The Secret Origin of Mrs. Nautilus / "If The Goo's Alight, It's Not Alright!"
Originally printed in TyrannoMax #25, October 1977.
Updated from this, details under the fold.

I already have mostly-unmodded versions of the images on the first version, but even those involved minor color fixes and cleanup of major flaws.
For a full comic page, though, I wanted passable consistency. The original colors had to be removed and converted into "inks", those inks then modified to keep clothing, hair length, and other features relatively consistent, areas outside the frame have to be drawn in, the image recolored, and then given aging and halftoning.
Each pic used a different prompt around the basic format of:
Secretary with a bob-haircut, redhead, green blouse and pearls,(action),(emotion descriptors), comic panel by Jack Kirby and Alex Toth, 1968, in the style of 60s Marvel
a secretary with lavender skin, tentacles for hair, (action),(emotion descriptors) comic panel by jack kirby and alex toth, 1968, in the style of 60s marvel

Tribute AMV for Dr. Underfang and Mrs. Natalie Nice/Nautilus.
From TyrannoMax and the Warriors of the Core, everyone's favorite Buzby-Spurlock animated series.
After all, who doesn't love a good bad guy, especially when they come in pairs?
Process/Tutorial Under the Fold.
This is, of course, a part of my TyrannoMax unreality project, with most of these video clips coming from vidu, taking advantage of their multi-entity consistency feature (more on that later). This is going to be part of a larger villain showcase video, but this section is going to be its own youtube short, so its an video on its own.
The animation here is intentionally less smooth than the original, as I'm going for a 1980s animated series look, and even in the well-animated episodes you were typically getting 12 FPS (animating 'on twos'), with 8 (on threes) being way more common. As I get access to better animation software to rework these (currently just fuddling along with PS) I'm going to start using this to my advantage by selectively dropping blurry intermediate frames.
I went with 12 since most of these clips are, in the meta-lore, from the opening couple of episodes and the opening credits, where most of the money for a series went back in the day.
Underfang's transformation sequence was my testing for several of my techniques for making larger TyrannoMax videos. Among those was selectively dropping some of the warped frames as I mentioned above, though for a few shots I had to wind up re-painting sections.
Multi-entity consistency can keep difficult dinosaur characters stable on their own, but it wasn't up to the task of keeping the time-temple accurate enough for my use, as you can see here with the all-t-rex- and-some-moving-statues, verses the multi-species effort I had planned:
The answer was simple, chroma-key.
Most of the Underfang transformation shots were done this way. The foot-stomp was too good to leave just because he sprouted some extra toes, so that was worth repainting a few frames of in post.
Vidu kind of over-did the texturing on a few shots (and magenta was a poor choice of key-color) so I had to go in and manually purple-ize the background frame by frame for the spin-shot.
This is on top of the normal cropping, scaling, color-correcting, etc that goes into any editing job of this type.
It's like I say: nearly all AI you see is edited, most of it curated, even the stuff that's awful and obvious (never forget: enragement is engagement)
Multi-Entity Consistency:
Vidu's big advantage is reference-to-video. For those who have been following the blog for awhile, R2V is sort of like Midjourney's --cref character reference feature. A lot of video AIs have start-end frame functionality, but being able to give the robot a model sheet and effectively have it run with it is a darn nice feature for narrative.
Unlike the current version of Midjourney's --cref feature, however, you can reference multiple concepts with multiple images.
It is super-helpful when you need to get multiple characters to interact, because without it, they tend to blend into each other conceptually.
I also use it to add locations, mainly to keep them looking appropriately background-painting rather than a 3d background or something that looks like a modded photo like a lot of modern animation does.
The potential here for using this tech as a force multiplier for small animation projects really shines through, and I really hope I'm just one of several attempting to use it for that purpose.
Music:
The song is "The Boys Have a Second Lead Pipe", one of my Suno creations. I was thinking of using Dinowave (Let's Dance To) but I'm saving that for a music video of live-action dinosovians.
Prompting:
You can tell by the screenshot above that my prompts have gotten... robust. Vidu's prompting system seems to understand things better when given tighter reigns (some AIs have the opposite effect), and takes information with time-codes semi-regularly, so my prompts are now more like:
low-angle shot, closeup, of a green tyrannosaurus-mad-scientist wearing a blue shirt and purple tie with white lab coat and a lavender octopus-woman with tentacles growing from her head, wearing a teal blouse, purple skirt, purple-gray pantyhose. they stand close to each other, arms crossed, laughing evilly. POV shot of them looming over the viewer menacingly. The background is a city, in the style of animation background images. 1986 vintage cel-shaded cartoon clip, a dinosaur-anthro wearing a lab coat, shirt and tie reaches into his coat with his right hand and pulls out a laser gun, he takes aim, points the laser gun at the camera and fires. The laser effect is short streaks of white energy with a purple glow. The whole clip has the look and feel of vintage 1986 action adventure cel-animated cartoons. The animation quality is high, with flawless motion and anatomy. animated by Tokyo Movie Shinsha, studio Ghibli, don bluth. BluRay remaster.
While others approach the scripted with time-code callouts for individual actions.

just imagining a teeny tiny tim being absolutely devastated about jason’s death, that he manages to get on to dark forums to contact a mercenary for a hit on the joker’s life.
and who happens to be that mercenary? deathstroke.
tim wires money from his (admittedly very high) allowance to slade, who finishes the job within the week — news outlets are going crazy as nobody knows who pulled off such a stunt — bruce is confused, and dick is both grateful, that someone took the bastard who killed his baby brothers life, and angry, because bruce wasn’t the one to do it.
slade however? wants to investigate, someone finally had the gall to order a hit on the joker and he’s a little curious to see who it is.
only come to find a little boy all alone in a big house who spends his nights following around a vigilante in a furry suit.
and, well, slade hasn’t been the best parent, and probably doesn’t know how to deal with an average kid, but who can blame him when he begins to train tim into becoming a mercenary just like him — after all, how else is he gonna defend himself on the streets of gotham when he gallivants around with an expensive camera, a sign basically saying ‘kidnap me!’ strapped to his chest?
so what if the kid becomes robin and uses those skills in the cape? that’s batman’s problem to figure out.
#tim eating ice cream as someone’s artery pops all over deathstroke: you’re so nice mr slade!#slade: maybe i *should* talk to my kids…#dc#dc comics#tim drake#robin#red robin#slade wilson#deathstroke#ravager#rose wilson#batman#dick grayson

First off, thank you!
I can generally put together a page and a half a day this way, depending on how tricky the composition is and how devoted to it I am at the moment. Basically even-stevens with a lot of hand-drawn work, but with a mix of advantages and disadvantages.
I tend to make the process harder on myself than it needs to be.
This is partially because the datasets trend to the modern and my insistence on the look of the 60s, 70s or 80s for any given project means I'm doing a lot of reworks and tinkering. The dinosaur and battle-animal-style furry characters are harder to keep consistent than human characters, etc.
Part of it is I'm always trying to squeeze maximum results out of the tech, so every time there's a new version, my ambitions seem to inflate to match, keeping my general time-investment steady.
Human characters and more modern styles come easier to the generators, so if you're dealing with easily promptable set of character features, or ones that MJ's character reference system can make sense of, you'd probably have a much faster time producing usable raws for compositing. And fixing hairstyles and shirt-cuffs tends to be easier than fixing tusks and horns.
The areas that are difficult are things like fighting (less of a problem with stable diffusion, there's a little Cotton Mather in the major service-driven ones that imposes rules stricter than Y-7 cartoons). For Mrs. Nice kicking Wally into the time hole (as an example):
Mrs. Nice is kicking a punching bag, and Wally is slipping on the floor. The background was cobbled together from several chunks so the cave environment would be consistent.
Sometimes you have to prompt indirectly or use placeholder props to get the kinds of actions you want. It might not understand a sci-fi brainwashing chair, but it can do an electric chair made of futuristic metal. "Octopus tentacles for hair" makes hairy tentacles, so you put "tentacles coming out of her head." They aren't frozen in a block of ice, they're in a glass box that is covered in frost. That sort of thing.
It doesn't make a huge difference for my workflow, because I tend to composite characters from multiple gens in most situations. I find it, counterintuitively, makes for less stiff compositions.
The fauxtalgia-comics look, however, is just one option in hojillions. Because my techniques work on any style of art you want to use. The photoshoppery just gets more complicated for stuff that's painterly, pseudo-photocomic-y, or other.
I consider myself a nostalgia-artist (not a nostalgic artist, though I am often that. I try to make nostalgia my medium). I've got a whole deal about it, I'll get into it on its own post sometime.
But experimental and hybrid styles can produce some wild stuff, and I'm certain experimental forms are going to benefit from it.
I don't think that making or using AI art/image generation is morally wrong, as you guys know, but I have to admit that slotting a wibbly-lined low effort image selected from the first result set from Midjourney in your content is incredibly tacky. At least select something that looks good. Maybe something without the boring AI "sheen" look either.
You see this a lot in clickbaity content like web spam and youtube shorts attempting to algorithm game.

From this post, a conversation between Mrs. Nice and Dr. Underfang, about how there's more than one way to make a comic.
While the linked post goes into the process in much more detail, the short version is that making a comic with AI involves all the steps of making a photocomic or a Wondermark-esq collage comic.
Here, each panel is a combination of one or more gens through direct compositing and inpainting ('gumby Underfang' is a basic crop-job but the others are multi-image composites, inpainted edits, or both), with graphic design and non-AI composited elements. `
I like to use AI art to achieve forms of 'fauxstalgia', weaving concepts into the aesthetics of artifacts of the past. I consider myself a nostalgia artist (not a nostalgic artist, tho I can sometimes be that), but you can get as experimental with it as you want.
And people are already doing it, they just don't call them comics.
Those sequences of AI-generated photos that tell a horror story that pop up on Tumblr? Those are comics.
We are very much in the "plastic wrap and lens flare" phase of AI art, where the newest and (often literally) shiniest effects take center stage because like an early 2000s kid with a cracked copy of photoshop, it's the new toy.
(I have a feeling Colin Kaepernick is going to give us, at most, a few adventures of a D-rate Borgorroth of Coolswordoorroth before absconding with the bag.)
Feel free to reblog with folks that are doing innovative stuff.
I will start by recommending @reachartwork, where you're going to find all kinds of interesting new stuff, and a fun illustrated prose super-verse under the CHUM title.
