Panel Presentation: Oliver! (1968)
Oliver!  is a film adaptation of Charles Dickens' novel "Oliver Twist,”It talks about a story where a young orphan Oliver Twist runs away and meets a group of boys trained to be pickpockets by an elderly mentor in 1830s London after being sold to a mortician. Through its music, the film discusses themes of poverty, class distinction, and the search for belonging. It uses its songs to both advance the narrative and deepen our understanding of the characters' internal and external worlds.
Question 1: What do the musical numbers signify about identity in the course of the film’s narrative?
youtube
"Food, Glorious Food"is the opening musical sequence performed by the workhouse boys in Oliver!. This song shows us how poor and deprived these children are, as they dream of a life that's better than their current one. Their exaggerated dreams about food really stand out against their sad reality, making it clear just how tough their lives are. This moment in the film makes us see these boys as a group that society has left behind.
Question 2: What is the purpose of the songs in the characters’ lives?
youtube
"As Long as He Needs Me” is sung by Nancy. It is a powerful expression of her love and loyalty to Bill Sikes, despite the toxic nature of their relationship. It reveals her complexity as a character which torn between her affection for Sikes and her inherent goodness. Through this song, Nancy communicates her willingness to endure hardship for the sake of love, highlighting her tragic predicament.
Question 3: In what ways are the songs and/or musical performances racialized and/or gendered?
The Role of Women:
The female characters in Oliver! often embody or challenge Victorian gender norms. The portrayal of women through the songs and narrative can reflect broader societal expectations of women's roles as nurturers, caretakers, or figures of moral guidance, as seen with characters like Nancy and Mrs. Bedwin. Their roles and musical numbers can reinforce or subtly question the limited scope of agency afforded to women during the period depicted.
Racial Considerations
Given the setting and historical context of Dickens' "Oliver Twist," the film adaptation does not prominently feature racial diversity or explicitly address racial issues through its songs or characters. The focus is predominantly on class disparity and social injustice within a predominantly white, Victorian London.
Question 4: What elements of the film align with White musicals’ longing to transform the ordinary into utopia?
The musical transform the ordinary into utopia through several key elements.
Firstly, the film follows a classic narrative arc from adversity to resolution, a hallmark of many musicals that align with the longing for utopia. Oliver's journey from the workhouse, through the dangers of Fagin's gang, to finally finding a loving home with Mr. Brownlow, embodies the transformation from a bleak existence to one of security and happiness, mirroring the utopian desire for a better world.
The film's visual design, from the costumes to the sets, plays a significant role in crafting a utopian vision. Even in its depiction of poverty, there's a stylized, almost picturesque quality to the scenes that softens the harshness of the reality they represent.
youtube
Despite the individual struggles of characters like Oliver, Nancy, the film emphasizes themes of community and belonging. Musical numbers such as "Consider Yourself" highlight the importance of social connections and the idea that everyone can find their place in the world, reinforcing the utopian ideal of inclusivity and social harmony.
Question 5: How does the film reflect the temporal circularity of Black musicals?
While Oliver! is a film set within a specific historical period (Victorian England) and primarily reflects the social issues and class struggles of its time, applying the notion of temporal circularity directly to it can be challenging due to its distinct narrative context and cultural background. However, we can explore certain elements of the film that might resonate with or parallel the thematic explorations found in Black musicals, especially in how stories and characters might reflect on broader human conditions and societal cycles.
Oliver! talks about the rigid class structures of Victorian England, showcasing the struggles of the impoverished and the marginalized. This focus can echo the exploration of systemic inequality found in Black musicals, although through the lens of class rather than race. The film's depiction of the underclass's struggles and their aspirations for a better life might parallel themes in Black musicals that address societal obstacles and the pursuit of equality and justice.
Questions for the class:
In Oliver!, how does the portrayal of different social classes, particularly through the mise-en-scène and character interactions in the song "Who Will Buy?", reflect Victorian societal structures and contribute to the film's commentary on social inequality? Compare this representation with critical theories on class and social hierarchy. How does the film use the musical genre to both reinforce and challenge these societal norms?
Analyze how Nancy's character, especially through her performance in "As Long as He Needs Me," embodies and complicates Victorian gender expectations. Considering feminist film theory and the concept of the male gaze, discuss how Nancy's portrayal both conforms to and subverts traditional gender roles. What does this suggest about the film's engagement with contemporary discussions of gender and agency?
Oliver! is an adaptation of Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist. How does the film’s musical format affect the interpretation of the original literary work, particularly in its representation of social injustice and character complexity? Analyze a scene or song that significantly diverges from or closely aligns with the source material. Discuss how these choices in adaptation impact the film's narrative focus and thematic emphasis.

Thoughts on Oliver Twist
The fact that Charles Dickens starts off his book basically like: "Our story starts off in a town but not one that exists in real life, but I am also not making one up" is somehow both brilliant and kinda annoying at the same time
Oliver's good spirit that had plenty of room to grow because of the fact the establishment refused to feed the orphans. That is depressing.
Mr. Bumble is efficient with his naming process. He has all the remaining letters and all the way through again once he gets to Z
Oliver makes me want to cry when he cries, he's just a little kid
The fact that they just took people away from their families instead of encouraging them to support their family is insane
Mr. Gamfield has "the slight imputation of having brushed three or four boys to death already"... thank goodness they didn't send Oliver with him
I did tell my friends that the "please sir, I want some more" came from this
I get that they're orphans, so they are outcasts but are threatening death over food necessary???
Everyone is so mean to Oliver for no reason :(
There is something particularly gross and horrifying when the undertaker, Mr. Sowerberry proposes to make Oliver a "mute" (someone who goes to funerals and cries) specifically for other children's funerals.
Dickens calling himself Oliver's biographer and using the first person as if he's actually telling the story to us is always something that makes me happy in his books. I like it when he speaks personally of his characters like he knows them
"He'll murder me!" You insulted his dead mother. Can't blame Oliver on this one
He's not a murderer. He shook Noah a few times, but he's still alive and well, just sobbing with a black eye. It would definitely hurt, but he'll live
The fact that they blame Oliver's actions on meat and being overfed is so weird 😐. Oliver deserved to run away
Dick is so sweet despite being prepared to die from sickness
"The blessing was from a young childs lips, but it was the first that Oliver had ever heard invoked upon his head; and through the struggles and sufferings, and troubles and changes, of his after life, he never once forgot it" my heart
Fagin, Bates, and Dodger kinda treat Oliver better even when the pickpocket things throw it off. They probably should've warned him before he was caught as a "thief" or, not betrayed him
At least Fagin is upset over it, even when it backfires in Mr.Sike's face. They do bother planning to look for him by asking Nancy to. It's kinda selfish that they do it so he won't tell, but they are worried for their own survival as well
Mr. Brownlow and Mrs. Bedwin seems to be the only people who care for Oliver genuinely 100% of the time
Fagin is called "The Jew" more often than he is his actual name
Nancy talking about how she thieves for them for 12 years :(
Oliver keeps getting betrayed and left behind. He got shot, and they just left him!! Fortunately, someone always cones to find him, whether or not it's with good intentions kinda reignites the problems
Mr. Bumble gets married and is completely degraded by his wife's sharp wit in only 8 weeks.
Rose is an angel, no questions asked
SIKES JUST KILLED NANCY NOOOO
NOOO DICK DIED TOO 😭
Fagin is also dead for his compliance in the murder
Sikes dies in the most catastrophic way possible, fitting.
At least everyone else got the fates they deserved, good and bad :)

This costume, created over forty years ago has been spotted at least ten times over the years and has almost certainly been used even more. It appears with different accessories each time. Because this gown has been used so many times, it is interesting to note how the color changes based off of the lighting in each production.  Sometimes the pattern on the gown is clearly visible, while in other productions it almost completely disappears.
The costume was first seen in the 1972 adaptation of Cranford, where it was worn by Freda Dowie as Miss Brown. In 1973 it was spotted on Vickery Turner as Charlotte Brontë in The Brontës of Haworth. In 1977 it was seen on Kate Nicholls as Kate Nickleby in Nicholas Nickleby, and the next year in 1978 on Judy Cornwell as Bessy Tulliver in The Mill on the Floss. In 1983 it was worn in Jane Eyre, where it appeared on Zelah Clark in the title role. In 1986 the dress appeared again on Sandra Payne as Mrs. Micawber in a production of David Copperfield. The dress was not seen again for eight years until it was spotted on Rachel Power as Mary Garth in the 1994 Middlemarch, and then again in 1999 in Olivier Twist, where it was worn by Annette Crosbie as Mrs. Bedwin. In 2001 the gown could be seen on an extra in Nicholas Nickleby, and finally, in 2008 it was seen on Freema Agyeman as Tattycoram in Little Dorrit.

Writing Girls
1. A Groom of One's Own (2010)
2. A Tale of Two Lovers (2011)
3. The Tattooed Duke (2012)
4. Seducing Mr. Knightly (2012)
1. Crystal Gardens (2012)
2. The Mystery Woman (2013)
3. Otherwise Engaged (2014)
The Suffragette Scandal
Frederica Marshall is one of the early suffragettes. Owner of a successful all-women newspaper, she campaigns to prove to 1877 society that equal rights is something that can and should happen. But when a man whom she once spurned tries to shut down her efforts, she must enlist the help of his brother – aristocratic forger and scoundrel Edward Clark – to keep her campaign alive.
The Duke's Tattoo
Before he was the tenth Duke of Ainsworth, Jeremy Maubrey was one of the ‘Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse’ and a cavalry officer known for his implacable nature. But what he wakes up to find on this particular morning requires revenge of a whole new order of magnitude. Bath’s only female apothecary, Miss Prudence Haversham has dreamed of revenge against the duke who ruined her life nine years ago. Unfortunately, she made one simple mistake and mocked the wrong man indelibly. Now, Miss Haversham can only pray her innocent victim never discovers the guilty part.
What the Earl Desires
A pair of English women hire Najja, an African assassin, to protect them. In the course of her duties she meets Colin Faulkner, Earl of Clifton. But they can never be together, because the year is 1811, and an entire continent – plus her loyalty to her father – lie between them.
What The Parrot Saw
Captain Mattie St Armand is not just a woman: she’s the biracial bastard daughter of a pirate and a freedwoman, so she needs a naïve white man to help deflect the authorities while she smuggles slaves from Florida to freedom in the Bahamas. This is where Oliver Woodruff comes in. A naïve white man who needs rescuing from a whorehouse, he’s the perfect man for her job.

10, 15, 32, 33
Number 10:
When he was wicked -Julia Quinn -I debated whether this book should be top 10 or not, but the loving way Francesca's first marriage was treated plus an actual Scotish noble that is portrayed the same way English nobles were (which is probs also the most historically accurate way) made me value it a lot.
Pauline/Griffin (Any duchess will do -Tessa Dare) -I never expected to like a 17 years gap romance so much. But they are very sweet and probably the best interclass romance I read. 100% recommend reading the book.
Mara Lowe (No good duke goes unpunished -Sarah Maclean) - Kudos to Maclean for hee morally ambigous heroines that break the usual mold.
Gareth St. Clair (It's in his kiss -Julia Quinn) - He had his bad moments, but I enjoed him
Number 15:
Devil in disguise -Lisa Kleypas -Not Kleypas's best, but pretty good.
Matthew/Daisy (Scandal in spring -Lisa Kleypas) -Kinda the same as above.
Phoebe Challon (Devil’s daughter -Lisa Kleypas) -I liked her, maybe she should be higher?
Cross (One good earl deserves a lover -Sarah Maclean) -He is not bad, but loses points for being illogical and brooding while the heroine saves the day
Number 32:
A wallflower Christmas -Lisa Kleypas - It's a novella that really didn't need to be written
Prunella/Bedwin (To dare a dukw -Emma V. Leech) -She practically slandered him, but they end up together bc it was no big deal.
Alice Dowding (To steal a kiss -Emma V. Leech)-Her worst sin is being very underdeveloped.
Benedict Bridgerton (An offer from a gentleman -Julia Quinn) - I don't like him! I want to slap him on Sophie's behalf.
Number 33
To steal a kiss -Emma V. Leech -Nothing outrageous, just not a good book.
Penelope Featherington (Romancing Mr. Bridgerton -Julia Quinn) -Her own book makes her look like a sociopath.
Daphne/Simon (The duke and I -Julia Quinn) -They were horrible to each other, but they were in love?!
Rafe Bowman (A wallflower Christmas -Lisa Kleypas) -He is...there, I guess.

Hi, I'm an alto and a teenage girl and I'm auditioning for Oliver!, what character should I go for and what song should I use? Thank you so much for your help!!
Hmmm it depends on your vocals and acting and age and such. Here are some descriptions of the characters:
Nancy
Female Principal Role. A cockney girl with a warm heart, Nancy is an abused career thief, prostitute and former child pickpocket. A sensitive side and noble and likeable but hardened and streetwise beyond her years. She lives with and loves Bill Sykes, pretty, intelligent, longs for a better life. Strong singer (belter), actor, some dancing.
Cockney accent required. Age to look 21 – 32
Songs: It’s a Fine Life, I’d Do Anything, Oom-pah-pah, As Long As He Needs Me, Fine Life (Reprise)
Vocal: Alto F3-E5
Widow Corney
Female Supporting Role. The domineering workhouse mistress. Widow Corney is an “old maid”, who has been left on the shelf, would do anything to get Mr Bumbles attention. Like Bumble, will be played a little more edgy. Cockney accent required. Age to look 45 – 55
Songs: Oliver, I Shall Scream
Vocal: Soprano B3-G5
Mrs. Sowerberry
Female Supporting Role. A loud lady, very bubbly personality, nicest person you could meet, unless you are Oliver. Cockney accent required. Age to look 40 – 60
Songs: That’s Your Funeral
Vocal: Alto C3-F5
Bet
Female Supporting Role. Nancy’s loyal friend who is one of Fagin’s former pickpockets. Cockney accent required. Age to look 15 – 20
Songs: It’s a Fine Life, I’d Do Anything
Vocal: Alto G#3-E5
Charlotte
Female Supporting Role. The rude but also flirtatious daughter of the Sowerberrys. Cockney accent required. Age to look 14 – 19
Non-Singing
Mrs. Bedwin
Female Minor Role. Mr Brownlow’s kind-hearted, motherly housekeeper.
British (not cockney) accent. Age to look 45 – 65
Songs: Where Is Love (Reprise)
Vocal: Soprano C4-B4
Old Sally
Female Minor Role. Cockney accent required. Age to look 50 – 70
Non-Singing
And then there are some smaller soloists like The Rose Seller, Strawberry Seller, Milk Maid ect
So there are tons of choices so I couldn’t pick a song that can fit for all of them haha. Let me know which one you think you are more likely to seriously look at
