Happy Birthday actor Kenneth Cranham born 12th December 1944 in Dunfermline.

Cranham trained at the National Youth Theatre and RADA, he is a very prolific theatre and TV actor who has also appeared in countless films since his debut as Noah Claypole in the 1968 musical Oliver, you might remember him from playing the title role in the 80’s show Shine On Harvey Moon. Now I’ve checked and double checked and for a man who has acting credits in over 50 television shows he has never been in Taggart! Most disappointing….

From the 70’s he was in Z-Cars, Softly, Softly: Taskforce, A Family at War and Budgie, in 80’s Brideshead Revisited, Reilly: Ace of Spies ( as Vladimir Lenin no less!), Inspector Morse and Boon, the 90’s didn’t see him slow down, Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit, Casualty, Bergerac and Kavanagh QC. The “Noughties” saw him pick up roles in the British-American-Italian historical drama Rome, Tess of the d'Urbervilles and Merlin. The past few years he has been on the small screen in Upstairs Downstairs, Death in Paradise and War and Peace.

His notable film roles have been in Chocolat, Hellbound: Hellraiser II, Gangster No. 1, Layer Cake, Valkyrie with Tom Cruise and Maleficent with Angelina Jolie.

Wikipedia has Cranham appearing in around 100 tv shows, he also finds time to tread the boards and in he won a prestigious 2016 Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor in The Father. Other UK TV series include Scarborough and The Good Karma Hospital another TV series set in a coastal town in tropical South India.

- Roger Allam and Shakespeare: the episode has 2 nods to Allam’s most famous Shakespeare roles — in Bright’s Prospero speech and Endeavour’s “I know thee not, old man” (what Hal says to reject Falstaff)

- I’d forgotten how much Jack Laskey ups the tempo of the show (and I think his new maturity on camera was really striking)

- A nice tie-in to the otherwise slightly narratologically shaky but horribly moving end of the book version of The Remorseful Day, where Lewis discovers that Morse acted [to avoid spoilers — in a way which disappointed Lewis] as he did to protect Strange’s marriage. In retrospect, this piece of canon makes MUCH LESS SENSE without the Thursdays.

Kit playing Noah Claypole in Audible's Oliver Twist is so funny.

Oliver Twist ~Capitulo 1~ -En la ciudad de inglaterra,unas personas hallaron a una joven muchacha enfermatirada en medio de la calle, lo mas preocupante de esto fue que la joven estaba a punto de dar a luz un bebe. Estas personas llevaron a la joven a un hospicio, que era dirigido por la junta parroquial, este lugar es para los necesitados que necesitan cobijo. Al dia siguiente nació el hijo de la muchacha; la joven falleció después de el parto, al no saber quien eras la mujer o porque estaba esa noche tirada en medio de la calle, el hospicio le dio cobijo al pequeño al cual llamaron Oliver Twist. vivio 9 años en un hospicio donde la Sra Mann donde se suponia que debia cuidar a los niños pero lo que hacia era quedarse con el dinero el cual era destinado para los niños y mantenerlos, cuando cumplio nueve años lo llevaron a otro lugar donde lo vendieron a el señor encargado de la funerria. ~Capitulo 2~ -Cuando estuvo en la funeraria lo trataron de una manera no tan bonita ya que no lo alimentaban bien. Un dia Noah Claypole se empezo a meter con la madre de Oliver (empezo hablar mal de ella) , Oliver le pego y la Sra Sowerberry se enojo tanto que tambien le golpeo y lo castigo. Oliver cansado por tantos maltratos que le hacian injustamente hacia el, se escapó a Londres. ~Capitulo 3~ -Oliver, al llegar a Londres se encuentra a un muchacho al cual le llaman el Pillastre el cual se fija en Oliver. El pillastre le dice a Oliver que diriga con el a conocer a Fagin, para el cual el Pillastre trabajaba. Fagin era un señor el cual recogia a niños nabandonados para que robaran para el. Tiempo después, Fagin mando a Oliver a robar con unos niños de la pandilla. Le roban en las calles a el Sr. Blownlow, el pillastre y l pandilla logra escapar pero el Sr. logró atrapar a Oliver, pero después de ir con el juez declaran inoscente a Oliver y el Sr. Brownlow lo adopta. ~Capitulo 4~

Oliver pasó en la casa recibiendo el cariño del Sr. Brownlow. Un día fue un amigo a visitar al Sr. Brownlow, que le pidió que fuera a llevar unos libros a una librería y que los pagar. Mientras Olive iba por la calle con los libros, Sikes (un ladrón que trabaja para Fagin) y Nancy (novia de Sikes) lo secuestran y lo llevan de nuevo con Fagin. ~Capitulo 5~

El Sr. Brownlow habló con la policía sobre la desaparición de Oliver e incluso publicó en el periódico que daría una recompensa a todo aquel que le diera noticias del niño. El Sr. Bumble (dueño del hospicio) decidió aprovecharse de la situación para ganarse un dinerillo y le contó mentiras de Oliver. El Sr. Brownlow decidió no querer volver a saber nada más de aquel muchacho. Mientras tanto Fagin, Sikes y otro ladrón planean el robo de una casa en el que pretenden involucrar a Oliver. ~Capitulo 6~ Llegó el día del robo, Nancy prometió a Oliver que algún día le ayudaría a salir de aquel mundo. Mientras tanto se llevaron a Oliver fuera de la ciudad. Ya de noche se acercaron a la casa donde robarían y Sikes metió a Oliver en el desván para que les abriera la puerta desde dentro, con tal mala suerte que los pillan y Oliver es disparado. Sikes consigue rescatarlo y lo abandona en medio de unos matorrales. ~Capitulo 7~

Al día siguiente Sikes y el otro ladrón que lograron escapar dieron noticias a Fagin de lo ocurrido.

Paralelamente a esto Fagin empezó a hacer sospechosos negocios con un tal Monks. ~Capitulo 8~ Oliver despertó de entre los matorrales y herido y con la poca fuerza que le quedaba consiguió regresar a la casa del robo y cuando llamó a la puerta se desmayó. Allí la Sra. Maylie y su hija adoptiva Rose Maylie le acogieron y le curaron gracias al doctor Losberne. Cuando Oliver se despertó les contó a todos su historia. La Sra. Maylie y Rose conmovidos por su historia y al ver que no tenía a nadie más le adoptaron como a un hijo. Más tarde fue a vivir al campo donde recibirá mucho cariño.

~Capitulo 9~ En aquella temporada en el campo Rose cogió una enfermedad por la que se temió su vida. Harry (el hijo de la Sra. Maylie que llevaba tiempo enamorado de Rose) fue a verla. La Sra. Maylie al ver que Rose no mejoraba llamo al doctor Losberne que tras varios días de tratamiento la curó; y poco a poco fue recuperándose. Harry aprovechando su estancia allí decidió declarar su amor a Rose, pero ésta le rechazó porque pensaba que sería una mala influencia para él, puesto que él se dedicaba a la política y el pasado de Rose podía influir en su carrera. ~Capitulo 10~

Mientras tanto el Sr. Bumble (dueño del hospicio) se había casado con la Sra. Corney (gobernanta del hospicio) otorgándole a éste más poder. Estaba coqueteando los dos en su habitación cuando la Sra. Sally llamó a la Sra. Corney, que estaba en su lecho de muerte y la contó que hace algunos años robó una joya a una mujer que murió durante un parto en ese mismo hospicio (Agnes Fleming) y que la gustaría que antes de morir le entregaran esa joya al hijo de la mujer (Oliver). La Sra. Corney sin hacerla mucho caso se quedó con la joya, cuando volvió a la habitación pilló al Sr. Bumble hablando consigo mismo, diciendo que se había casado con esa detestante mujer por interés. Ésta muy cabreada le echó de casa. Mientras el Sr. Bumble caminaba por la calle cabreado se topó con Monks, al que no conocía de nada, pero éste sí. Monks le preguntó si sabía algo de una mujer que murió hace algunos años dando a luz en su hospicio. Éste le dijo que el apenas sabía de nada pero que su mujer podría darle más detalles. Monks contactó con la Sra. Corney y ésta le contó toda la historia de la madre de Oliver que le entregó una joya a la Sra. Sally y que más tarde se la entregó a ella. Monks la pidió la joya y ésta se la dio. Monks destruyó la joya.

~Capitulo 11~

Rose y la Sra. Maylie decidieron ir a Londres y contactar con el Sr. Brownlow a petición de Oliver para aclararle todo lo que ocurrió con Oliver desde que lo secuestraron. Pero resultó que el Sr. Brownlow se había ido a las Indias.

Un día Monks fue a visitar a Fagin en uno de sus negocios. Nancy los estaba espiando y descubrió que ése tal Monks contrató a Fagín para que volviera a capturar a Oliver que estaba con Rose e hiciera de él un ladrón. También descubrió que Monks era hermano de Oliver. Nancy asustada por lo que había escuchado contactó con Rose y la contó que ella era una ladrona que trabajaba para Fagín y la contó todo lo que había escuchado en la conversación de Monks y Fagín. Después la dijo que podía contactar con ella todos los domingos a las 12:00 en el puente de Londres.

Rose contó a la Sra. Maylie, a Oliver y al doctor Losberne todo lo que Nancy la había revelado. Éstos decidieron ir en busca del Sr. Brownlow que ya había vuelto de las Indias, y le contaron todo lo que ocurrió con Oliver. El Sr. Brownlow estaba dispuesto ayudar a Oliver en lo que hiciera falta. ~Capitulo 12~

Paralelamente a todo aquello Noah Claypole (niño que trabajaba con Oliver en la funeraria) y Charlotte (amante de Noah) robaron a sus amos (Sres. Sowerberry) cierta cantidad de dinero. Tuvieron que huir a Londres donde casualmente se toparon con Fagin. Éste los contrató para que trabajaran para él, y éstos aceptan.

Fagin empieza a sospechar que Nancy les está traicionando y decide mandar a Noah a espiar a Nancy.

~Capitulo 13~ Nancy logra escaparse y acudir a la cita con Rose y los demás en el puente de Londres. Lo que no sabía es que Noah la estaba espiando. Acude a la cita y les cuenta a éstos dónde pueden contactar con Monks, y les dice que le reconocerán porque lleva una marca en el cuello. El Sr. Brownlow cree conocerle. Cuando Nancy llega a su casa, Noah ya le había chivado de todo a Fagín y éste se lo había contado a Sikes (su novio). Sikes con sangre fría la mató a garrotazos, después quemó el cuerpo y huyó hasta un hostal. Ya en el hostal se encontró con unos ladrones que le contaron que la policía había cogido a Fagín y a sus ladrones (inclusive Monks). Los vecinos cercanos al hostal se enteraron de que allí se encontraban todavía algunos ladrones que trabajaban con Fagín, y Sikes con miedo fue a la parte de arriba del hostal, cogió una cuerda para saltar a la calle con tan mala suerte que al pasarse la cuerda por el cuello, se tropezó y se ahorcó. ~Capitulo 14~

El Sr. Brownlow, Rose, Oliver, el doctor Losberne y la Sra. Maylie fueron a ver a Monks a la cárcel con tal de que éste les contara la verdad sobre Oliver. Monks ni siquiera afirmó que Oliver fuera su hermano y lo negó todo. El Sr. Brownlow al ver que no podía sacarle ninguna información, decidió contar él la historia. Resulta que El Sr. Brownlow era muy amigo del padre de Oliver (Edwin Leeford). Éste le presentó un día a una vieja y ambiciosa mujer con la que se casó y tuvieron un hijo (Monks). Más tarde se separaron y conoció a un ex-oficial de la marina que tenía dos hijas (Rose y Agnes) y más tarde el padre de las hermanas se murió dejándolas solas. Edwin se enamoró de Agnes y mantuvo una relación con ella. Ésta se quedó embarazada. Edwin enfermó y murió antes de que el bebé naciera. Agnes desesperada, sin dinero y sola anduvo hasta que derrotada llegó al hospicio donde más tarde dio a luz a Oliver y murió. Mientras tanto la ex-mujer de Edwin y su hijo (Monks) robó a Agnes la herencia que Edwin. Más tarde la mujer murió dejándole la herencia robada a su hijo Monks. Paralelamente a esto Rose (una de las hijas del ex-oficial de la marina), después de la muerte de su padre quedó sola y abandonada, y entonces fue cuando la Sra. Maylie la adoptó.

Cuando el Sr. Brownlow terminó de contar la historia, todos supieron al fin la verdad. Ese mismo día Rose y Oliver descubrieron un padre y un hermano. Monks fue liberado más tarde y morirá en uno de sus trapicheos. Rose Maylie Se casará al fin con Harry (hijo de la Sra. Maylie) porque éste dejó la política, y la Sra. Maylie se irá a vivir con ellos. Cerca se irán a vivir Oliver y el Sr. Brownlow. Mientras tanto se supo que Fagin murió en su celda el día antes de su ejecución y la mayoría de sus compinches correrán un destino parecido. El Sr. Bumble y la Sra. Corney (dueños del hospicio) se arruinaron y murieron en la miseria.

Happy 78th Birthday Kenneth Cranham the Scottish film, television, radio and stage actor.

Kenneth, in my opinion is one of the most recognisable faces in acting, he was born in Dunfermline in 1944  to Margaret McKay Ferguson Cranham spent his early years in Lochgelly, Fife. 

He didn’t meet his father, who was in the army, until he was 18-months-old as the country had tried to avoid the mass unemployment that happened after end of the First World War and he was sent off to Africa.

When he was approaching school age the family moved to Camberwell, south London, where he said and shared a bedroom with my parents from the ages of four to 10.

Kenneth started acting at school and was lucky enough to get a paying job before he even left school, with a part in a radio play. His first big break came when he played the part of Noah Claypole on the musical Oliver! in 1966, since then it seems he has hardly been out of work, from Z Cars, Softly, Softly Task force and Danger UXB in the 70’s,  Brideshead Revisited, Reilly: Ace of Spies and his most famous part as the title role in Shine on Harvey Moon, Heart of the High Country, Inspector Morse, Boon in the 80’s and Minder, Heartbeat and Kavanagh QC in the 90’s it is fair to say most of his acting credits have been on the small screen.

Cranham however has acted alongside some heavyweight cinema stars including Tom Cruise in Valkyrie, Angelina Jolie in Maleficent and Daniel Craig in Layer Cake. Horror fans will also know him as Dr. Philip Channard in the second Hellraiser film. More up to date he was in Hatton Garden a four-part drama based on the notorious cash and jewellery burglary.

To show you how prolific Kenneth Cranham has been, IMDB say he has clocked up at least 200 acting jobs, that’s over different genres,  he also finds time to tread the boards and he won a prestigious  2016 Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor in The Father.
