Family Game 1983 Morita Yoshimitsu Neil McInnis JPT3391
Throughout the entire watchtime of this film all I could think of was Whiplash, the 2011 film where J. K. Simmons mentally and physically torments a young jazz drummer. However, this film isn't so much about the relationship between master and student as Whiplash is. It's much more about the strained family dynamics of early 1980s Japan, the demands on every family member from society writ large, and the lengths that families were willing to go to get their children into prestigious universities. One facet of this film I found particularly interesting was the relationship between Shinichi and Shigeyuki.
Shinichi, the older brother, has already gotten into the prep school that his father wanted him to get into, Seibu High. Shinichi experiences a kind of post-accomplishment aimlessness; he's lost motivation to study since his motivation was to get into Seibu in the first place. He has reservations about going on to university since it doesn't seem to fit his life anymore. Shinichi is now much more interested in talking to girls and hanging out with friends for the vast majority of the movie. He's almost switched places with Shigeyuki.
Shigeyuki is struggling a lot with school, but not because he's simply not smart enough, he just has little to no drive to do so. He's much more invested in drawing and reading about rollercoasters than Japanese language class or English. It's not until his father has had enough of his slacking and gets an at-home tutor that Shigeyuki sees any improvement in his grades. This tutor quickly proves to be far more than Shigeyuki's father bargained for and ends up being physically abusive almost immediately.
The tutor, Mr. Yoshimoto, is a tall, imposing man who immediately establishes his dominance over the Numatas. He goes to a second-rate university, but carries himself as if he were a Toudai alumnus. He enforces his regime of studying onto Shigeyuki, slapping him and harassing him in public until Shigeyuki bends to his will. As we see later in the film, what Yoshimoto is actually trying to do is to teach Shigeyuki to stand up for himself and act on his own. We can see this when Yoshimoto smiles when Shigeyuki blocks his slap and slaps back. What Yoshimoto did is still assault and he should be charged as such, but it wasn't senseless assault.
Yoshimoto represents the cold reality of what it takes to make it in our hyper-competitive society. If you're not completely dedicated to the grind, not utterly focused on making it to your next goal, you'll end up like Yoshimoto himself: slapping 9th graders across the face for a couple hundred bucks. The very end of the film, where the whole family falls asleep midday to the sound of a helicopter flying overhead, is emblematic of just how exhausting the grind is. I think all of us can relate to just passing out midday when the lack of sleep from studying catches up to us.

"SEARCH FOR GUN IN N. S. SLAYING," Hamilton Spectator. November 27, 1933. Page 6. --- Inquest Held on Death of Mrs. W. Wilkinson ---- Son Says She Was Threatened By His Uncle ---- Glace Bay, N.S., Nov. 27. - (CP) - Search went forward to-day for the weapon that sent a bullet crashing through Mrs. William Wilkinson's head as she sat in a neighbour's room Thursday morning.
Police considered having a diver explore the flooded Hub colliery, suspected as a possible hiding place of the death gun. A mysterious occurrence about the old shaft on the night of the murder led to this belief.
A miner walking homeward in the early morning darkness told Chief Joseph McInnis he had seen a car drive up to the pit mouth. It stopped for a few moments and then the door slammed and it moved away.
The weapon was believed by police to be an important factor in their investigation. Mrs. Wilkinson was shot with a rifle, and a flattened soft-nose bullet was found lying on the floor near her body. Simultaneously with the murder, her husband's hunting rifle disappeared.
Brother-in-Law Held To-day Walter Wilkinson, the husband's brother, was held on a murder charge. Evidence submitted at the preliminary hearing Saturday told of quarrels between the dead woman and her brother-in-law and of a "row" in the Wilkinson home the night of her death,
Thirteen-year-old Douglas Wilkinson, who saw his mother killed, said Walter had threatened to shoot her. Before they fled to Daniel McLeod's home they had locked themselves in a bedroom and barricaded the door. He was not sure whether his uncle was carrying a gun.

(see @ladydisdainblog, i told you i’d use them all)
well, this is it, folks, the last chapter, the epilogue. turns out i couldn't resist bringing in this one character in the flesh for the coda rather than enjoying his virtual presence. i only wish i'd thought about making gifs or a collage with him when i had time, because at the moment it's something i definitely don't have.
Kyle Moore sat on the open terrace of Café Landtmann, stretching out his long legs in front of him, letting a soft April breeze stroke his naked calves and blinking contentedly.
"Isn't it a bit early for shorts?" he heard a familiar voice behind him and half-turned in his chair, throwing his head back.
"Like you don't appreciate the view!" he quipped, with a grin, jumping to his feet and throwing his arms out. "Come here, old boy, and show me how much you missed me!"
"What, right here?" his old friend smiled as Kyle's arms coiled tightly around him.
Kyle huffed and patted the man's back.
"Your words, not mine, darling," he murmured suggestively.

"ACTIVE AT C.C.F. CONVENTION," Toronto Star. April 16, 1934. Page 3. --- The threatened casting out of Communists was completed Saturday evening with the adoption of a new constitution and the election of officers at the Ontario C.C.F. convention at the King Edward. Three leaders from near and far are here depicted by Eric Gibbs, Star caricaturist, as they repulsed verbal onslaught of the radical elements. Thomas Cruden (LEFT), leading Toronto C.C.F. member, who supported E. J. Garland. Bow River, M.P. (CENTRE), in beating back the insurgents. Angus McInnis, Vancouver M.P. (RIGHT), was chairman.
"BIRD, FACING FIRE THREAT, WON'T LEAVE EGGS," Toronto Star. April 16, 1934. Page 3. --- Mother love in the heart of a canary proved stronger than fear caused by the din and turmoil of a fire at 703 Yonge St. early yesterday. With firemen tearing around, fighting the flames, the little mother-to-be remained on her eggs in the nest. Even when a fireman carried her cage downstairs through dense smoke she refused to budge. The lower picture shows the feathered heroine still at the post of duty after the fire. Above are seen, at the left, Walter Abel of Hamilton, who was visiting Harvey Adams at the time of the blaze. Both men escaped down ladders erected by firemen. Mrs. the O. M. Kennedy. CENTRE, owner of the canaries, gave after she had been awakened by smoke alarm on the second floor.

I've almost never had a bad English teacher...they were just all so great.
Like there was my 2nd (and 3rd) grade teacher, Teacher Fia (amazing and kind, grandmother vibes, could never spell my name right, but she was always so genuinely upset that she couldn't that I didn't care); my 5th grade teacher, Teacher Wan (introduced me to my favorite book series aka changed my life); Paul Blofis; my 7th grade teacher, Mr. Post (also known as Mr. Host! on class game days and Mr. Toast! because we were evil and Mr. Ghost! during spooky season); my 8th grade teacher, Mrs. McInnis (I was literally her favorite student ngl and she is the greatest); my 10th grade teacher, Mrs. Rob (grown up but still chaotic horse girl theater kid love her), and the list goes on....
I just love my English teachers :)

Wanderer (A Spotify Playlist) [To listen, click HERE]
Special technologies will be dispensed on August 22, reprogramming humans to a 50-50 balance of the right and left sides of the brain.
It is time for intuition to take a stronghold in making new individual/collective realities materialize.
To that effect comes this playlist that clarifies my task in these times of focus on ascension: Right-side-brain tonic feat. Donna Summer, David Bowie, Hidrogenesse, Myd & nit, Lifelike, Ferrara, Patrick Cowley, Peter Richard, Brian Ferry & Todd Terje, Acid Aliens, and Man Parrish & Klaus Nomi.
In the photo, I am wearing a vintage seersucker-gingham dress (a gift from Paul Vitale), Orgreen Mr White frames, an apron by Kelly Bugden, and vintage Japan Air Lines flight bag from my collection.
