okay, i don't think the last two episodes will do anything to change my opinion, and i'll be too lazy to make an effort then anyway

Beyond the Bar hooked me the best way a show can hook me, with an actor i like and with a whip smart heroine

unfortunately after a while it became clear that if i continued to see it as a legal drama, i would look like a crazy person arguing with fictional people on the screen. most of what happens in that courthouse is melodrama - this is not to say i was never moved by the stories and the speeches, i actually was, pretty much every single time, even despite the occasional overacting, but it was jarring to see opposing counsels and prosecution being mostly decorative and not responding to glaring plot holes

then we have Hyo Min's underutilized fellow first-year associates. i know this was never supposed to be an ensemble drama, but until the latest pair of episodes all three of them existed in her world basically as the backdrop for her (and when they did not, they were literally sent out of town, that was kinda hilarious). so was her twin sister and her disability

then we have the second leads, who were so, so cute. until Jin Woo decided he was in a 2015 kdrama. Jin Woo, that's not how you make a woman with legitimate trust issues and low self-esteem trust you. oh well

i think i lost my train of thought now, so i will just jump right to the main course

what not only makes it all tolerable but actually makes me look forward to every new batch of episodes is, of course, the two main characters as individuals and the relationship between them. it may not be the saving grace of this drama but oh it is a grace nonetheless. and what a grace. the character work with these two has been excellent so far. not once did i have to ask myself, "but why did he/she do/say this?". somehow, with all the variety of content, i still find such thorough, thoughtful portraits of human beings refreshing - and it was also delightful to find (from talk show appearances) that the actors actually know and understand their characters so well, they both are so articulate too, it's a pleasure to listen to, i always respect solid work like that. the portrayal of their relationship, unlabeled, is chef's kiss. i can't help gushing about the maturity, the subtle development of it, the quiet comfort and trust they keep finding in each other, it is everything

listen, i am a diehard romantic, you have never heard from me nonsense like "this doesn't need romance", or "don't ruin this with romance", and you won't hear it from me this time (because it's bullshit, we're just too used to bad cliches and tropes - what we don't need is not romance but bad writing, make love not war ffs). but. i swear by all i hold dear, i will not cry and buy a plane ticket to Seoul to storm the JTBC building if nothing happens between these two despite all the narrative parallels and lingering looks. they can forever exist in this delicious nebulous state where they are a mentor and a mentee, she definitely has a crush on him and he maybe is starting to see her as more than a protege or maybe he isn't, maybe it's just a trick of the light, and they might or might not do something about it. whatever their relationship is going to look like in the future, i know they are going to continue to be adults and absolutely lovely about it. this is not a romance drama, but this is a love story. all the shapes. all the colors.

Sch. has been watching Star Trek TOS and there's this annoying monotonous warbling sound always playing on the bridge there idk if it's a sonar ping or something else, and whenever my brain isn't distracted enough it wants to leave my skull 😂

i have only myself to blame, he was looking for something to watch after rewatching the J.J. Abrams movies, and it was me who said, well why don't you just watch the whole thing from the beginning, you love old sci-fi shit, you love Babylon 5, i'm sure you'll love this too

i don't know what it is about Lee Sang Yeob but every time his character, be it a main character, a supporting one or a guest role, is squabbling with someone, he just. looks so. punchable 😂 it doesn't even matter whether he's a bona fide asshole or is just being annoying, and every time it really feels like it would be justified
