Y’all I think I cracked the bunny symbolism in Yellowjackets. I think rabbits symbolize the societal expectation for Jackie and Shauna to marry a man and have kids. Jackie’s mother insists that rabbits were Jackie’s favorite animal but in the next scene Jackie questions what a rabbit even is and why they exist. After that she then starts talking about Jeff, and Shauna’s stomach starts hurting. Jackie’s mom also gifts Shauna rabbits and the one we see her give at dinner is one with babies. Shauna lines those rabbits along the windowsill, yet clearly she and Jeff don’t particularly care for them. Shauna also kills the rabbit in her yard and feeds it to her family. I think this shows how Jackie and Shauna do not like the life and role they are made to play, and how Jackie’s mother has pushed the role she wished Jackie to have onto Shauna after Jackie’s death.
