A little-discussed detail in mphfpc is that Emma wasn't the only one who saw Abe in Jacob. Miss Peregrine suffers from the same problem.

Put yourself in her shoes, she clearly doesn't know how to deal with the grief and departure of children she is already emotionally attached to. She raised Abe since he was six, took him out of an inhumane situation, saw her son leave for war, saw him reject his home to go to America, as the years went by he stopped answering her letters and making her worried... And then out of nowhere a boy IDENTICAL to Young Abe appears on the island. Jacob is the exact same age Abe was when he went to war. A mother's heart is deceived just like a heart in love, she saw in Jacob the son she would never get back. It was as if Young Abe gave up on the war and came home.

It was as if the son she raised had returned. This is not a good thing to happen, because it made her relationship with Jacob complicated, with her eventually comparing Jacob to Abe (she always mentions that Jacob does what Abe would have done). She got too attached to someone who should have been a stranger.

Losing Jacob for her became losing Abe all over again. She never punishes Jacob properly considering the terrible things he did throughout the second trilogy, she forgives even the unforgivable. She loves this boy so much that she is willing to do anything for him. It is as if there is a favoritism towards Jacob that exceeds the gratitude she feels for having been saved by him, since after that he only gets into trouble and makes her suffer with worry.

It was she and the ymbrynes who closed Abaton and got rid of Caul (if it were up to Jacob he wouldn't even listen to what Bentham had to say) but she preferred to give all the credit to Jacob.

Their relationship is not exactly exemplary, it is confusing and attached to mutual nostalgia. Jacob admires the bird from his grandfather's stories, and she admires the copy of her son who is gone. I don't know if this is a healthy relationship, but it is definitely VERY complex.

Army Dreamers (mphfpc x male reader)

takes place in the Roommates universe but could be read as a one off.

War was hell on earth. In their world secluded from humanity, even before their loop, war had aged them just as much as time. It hurt them all differently, maybe that had more to do with their familial bond than the peculiar blood they all shared. There were the twins, two peculiar boys who never spoke, one would never know if it was because of their powers or because of the atrocities they witnessed in the orphanage. Claire, a beautiful young girl with golden skin and equally golden hair. A girl just slightly more outspoken than the mute twins. Being around the same age the three tended to stick to one another, the youngest in the loop physically, even if Claire was nearer with Enoch in mental age. Enoch, a boy filled with sass who preferred his seclusion with his golems (and Horace though he would never dare to say it). The world was a hard place right then, especially for an outspoken boy like Enoch.

Moving up in physical age, there was Horace, Millard, Y/n, and Victor. Horace, a boy tortured by the visions of the future he had during this time of war, was uncharacteristically happy and proper for his peculiarity. Though, being on the older side mentally, it was assumed he had learned how to separate what was the ever-changing future and what was the present. Millard, a boy who enjoyed attention as much as the next person, as long as that person was an extrovert, cursed with invisibility. A boy who always yearned to be seen hidden from sight due to a generational gift. Y/n, a boy whose imagination literally bursts from his skin. Ink littered his flesh in beautiful illustrations, an early action done so that he wouldn't be his own undoing. Where would his daydreams leave him if he didn't have a focused outlet? Victor, the boy with exceptional strength, peculiar strength. But time eats all her children in the end, and Victor's end came before anyone expected. His death left a darker void of mourning amongst Y/n and Bronwyn.

The oldest of them physically were Bronwyn, Olive, Hugh, and Emma. Abe had left them long ago to fight in the normal's war, his wish to be like them overtaking his want for the family he had gained in the home. Bronwyn was much like her brother, with exceptional strength. Her brother's death turned her joyous personality into a venomous sarcasm. Olive and Hugh were a happy pair, despite Olive's muteness from the horrors she had seen; it seemed every time the day had been restarted, Hugh did nothing but love her even more. Emma stuck to her letters that Abe had sent her in his absence, at least until Jacob arrived. Each child, each of their tales, as emotionally complex as the last, would take a toll on anybody. But Jacob was different; he was untainted by the horrors a peculiar person had to face growing up. He was youthful in his naivety, and his sass was something to fill the Abe-shaped hole in their family.

And it did. Each and every one of them was emotionally ruined as the last. But everything ends, even what is meant to be eternal. Anything good that the kids found in that loop was destroyed the moment wights stepped foot into their sacred hole. Now, they all carried the burden of blood on their hands. Some more than others, and some more a direct cause of the bloodshed than others. They had all seen things, done things to survive. They had all known war, but this war seemed to carry a heavier burden than the ones they had known before. And now here they were, in Florida, alive and expected to live a normal life. Some took to their new lives better than others. Claire particularly had easily become accustomed to modern life. As expected, Bronwyn and Y/n were still stuck under their eternal cloud of grief that they barely seemed to notice the change, gliding through the 21st century as if nothing had changed, because for them, emotionally, nothing had.

The rest of them had ended up falling somewhere in the middle of the spectrum that the three of them displayed. It took time, but Enoch became accustomed to the more open society. Using the newfound welcomeness to those who were different to finally face his feelings for Horace. The modern times were like a breath of fresh air, and it didn't take long for even Bronwyn to break out of her shell. It seemed all of them were growing into their new home, all but Y/n, that is. It seemed all he did over those summer months was sit on the back porch and watch Olive and Hugh garden when he wasn't staring at the flyer for Nevermore from 1943. It was the only thing he managed to salvage from their loop, well, the only thing of Victor's. It seemed every passing day he yearned more and more to leave the southern sunny state and go to the one place his deceased love yearned for them to flee to. Perhaps it was him just wanting to hold onto his past and flee in his own mind, or perhaps it was a chance to move on, to do what he had promised he would do and finally become a person outside of his grief.

Whats your opinion about the MPHFPC movie vs the book?

book vs movie feels like a question every mphfpc blog has answered at some point so ig it’s my turn now lol. rite of passage undertaken 🫡

keep in mind everything i’m saying has probably already been said much better by other people so if you want the tldr i like the books better, but ill take this as an excuse to ramble pointlessly under the cut in a critical manner (mild spoilers for the first + second trilogy)

quick note that i tend to speak with a lot of hyperbole/exaggeration so apologies if i overuse excessive language

general feeling seems to be that book >>>> movie and i agree because the movie sucks as an adaptation </3 i dont think its that bad of a movie; if you detach it from the source material, its average rather than unwatchable all things considered, but if you love the books and spend a lot of time thinking about the world and the characters and the original series is important to you, that is very hard to do because every infraction just feels like a kick in the teeth. and given that these aren’t little errors here and there and instead an entire rewrite of both the characters and the plot, its really hard to reconcile.

it sort of taints the joy i can get out of the movie. like i remember watching the film on netflix at some point when i was like thirteen or smthn with my family and i thought it was a good film, and then four years later i read the books and rewatched the film and now i can’t deal with it. i dread to imagine how it must’ve felt to have read the books first and gotten excited for the movie only to have sat down to watch something that can only be called miss peregrine’s home for peculiar children through technicality. most if not every accent has been filed down to american or english, only half the ages are correct, they couldn’t even get the peculiarities right (emma and olive </3), two new characters were added in the twins when the existing movie cast is barely explored as is, and i haven’t even gotten into the plot yet, and they made it less jewish. also they made jake about 20 percent less cool which irks me (as summarised by a post someone else made but i can’t bloody find it anywhere </3)

book jacob shot a man through the neck, i don’t believe that movie jacob could fire a gun. the movie states he went into the navy i think to get back to the loop, and whatever character development lead to that must’ve happened off-screen. i truly can’t see movie jacob being able to pull off the hollowgast army in books three and six and like sure if there were other movies he might’ve developed enough for that to be the case but that wet noodle did fuck all in that film. ‘you made us feel brave’ why because he sucked so hard in comparison to you that you felt like you could do anything? he could never pull ‘your mother is a truck stop hooker’ </3

i connected better to the characters in the books as a whole than in the movie, but that’s probably just personal preference. imo the movie characters felt a bit flat, a lot of the intrigue and depth was missing. i don’t like how emma’s fire is gone both literally and metaphorically, her fight and determination and strong sense of justice even if she had a bit of a temper, and a lot of interesting situations were sanded off with her edges (i.e knife to the neck when she first met jacob). i don’t like how olive was changed to be a one-note ‘crushing on the Dark Brooding Boy TM’ and given literally nothing else. with fiona, she talks a lot more which is a testament to poor character knowledge because it ties directly into her backstory, said backstory is reduced to that one line about peculiar persecution and im fairly certain the famine and witchcraft accusations aren’t mentioned - and if they are it isn’t meaningfully - and she doesn’t sound irish. it’s an important part of her character, ties into her lore pre-loop, and its explicitly stated that she has such a strong accent hugh has to translate, and none of that went into the film. even if the actor couldn’t do a convincing irish accent, it wouldn’t be an issue if fiona was accurate to the books. they also blanked on giving movie enoch any redeemable qualities, he’s just an asshole with a cool power. wait, we need him to have a bit of a character arc or he’ll just be aggravating to the audience. uhhh fuck it let him get with the fire bird. having a girlfriend is basically a positive character trait so that’s good enough /sarc. book enoch was at least entertaining even when he was being a little bastard, and he did have some care for his friends. i think it was dragonsdendoodles that made a post about how book enoch treated victor vs how movie enoch treated victor showed their differences in character and how movie enoch was a lot less compassionate, and that basically sums up the flaws with movie enoch and the film in general tbh. they took all the aesthetic qualities with none of the heart (lol). if im being fair to them, they did only get one movie and they can’t shove all the backstory and development of two trilogies into one film, but that doesn’t really explain why basic facts about the characters have been bulldozed over.

it also really doesn’t help that miss peregrines is split into two trilogies and it’s clear in how the books are written. book one is a third of the whole and it wasnt meant to be forced through a full conclusion like the movie does, it’s partially set-up for the next books whilst still being its own standalone story. technically it has a conclusion but it’s not the ending because it was never meant to be. in that case i get why they changed the second half of the movie because if they only got one, they sort of had to, but it reflects poorly on the film as a whole because the original story wasn’t meant for that. i admit this may be my fan view tainting it though because i like the books ending/latter half better.

also the phone thing sort of irritated me. this is a petty grievance considering magic is real but like. how did jacob call his grandfather in the future if he’s in 1940 technically1943infilmterms. i know the books have the ymbrine telephone boxes but like how to the present though. why did they make abe live, they were pushing too hard for the completely fluffy ending, he couldn’t even die right. the inciting incident for the whole movie is undone. on the other hand that also means jacob left abe for the loop and would’ve been cooler if they made it tie in to how abe left the peculiar house for the present, i accept that maybe they did and im just media illiterate and misremembering but i maintain that he should’ve stayed dead. the ending also felt a bit rushed and confusing in ways i don’t know how to articulate yet.

long story short they should’ve just made either a decent adaptation or called it ‘inspired by’ or a rewrite instead. i get that sacrifices have to be made to turn a book into a film but by god they took some fucking liberties with that sentiment. + 10 points for the acting though, only point i don’t really have any issues with. they did the best with the material they had

I have been shifting(minishifting partially, still shifting though!!!) since I was around 8 I guess? I didn't realize that was what I was doing at the time, and around 2021 I found out about shifting through a classmate (who brought it up at the most random time possible, an ELA class lol)

The first actual DR I ever made was a My Hero Academia reality, and by birds all mighty that script was ROUGH

But I still hold it close to my heart, even though it was so cringy

I took a break from shifting for like 7 months to a year at most, I believed in it, I just felt more content in my CR, but now I am at a point where I want to explore and be fully happy and learn and grow as myself!

I have several random questions about MPHFPC I've been wanting to ask, you don't have to answer all if you don't want to!

1. Do you prefer the first trilogy or the second trilogy?

I love getting random questions like this!

I prefer the first one, the story is much more unexpected and we have the best Plot Twist of all time! The only flaw of this trilogy is that it discards its new characters too quickly, We know incredible characters who either die very quickly, or never appear in the story again. The second trilogy is really cool, but its main focus lost me, between apocalyptic prophecies and a library of souls, I prefer to explore the library and its mysteries. I read the entire first Percy Jackson collection, prophecies lost their appeal for me.

Hope is the last to die, I would be absurdly happy if he brought something else to this universe. I accept anything from mphfpc. It could even be a biography of Abe, which I would read even though that would be like throwing salt in my eyes.

OH MY BIRDS, ABATON I WOULD LIKE TO SEE MORE ABOUT ABATON! Of all the loops presented, this is the most iconic. I feel like it was so under-explored, it was shown so quickly, I wanted to read a chapter that was like a sightseeing tour. The most Jacob showed us was: the landscape, what the corridors are like, what the Hall of Souls is like. DEAR I WANTED SO MUCH MORE, SOMEONE GIVE ME A HISTORY LESSON ABOUT THIS LOOP! Who was the founder? Who lived in the little houses carved into the mountains. How were the vases made? Was it done for free or was there a price? Was there a hierarchy? Caul says that the souls in the simplest vessels are of slaves. HOW SO???DID PECULIARIES SLAVE OTHER PECULIARIES? Did criminals have their souls stored there too? Was there a rule or could anyone deposit their soul there. Who borrowed these souls? Why do the vessels leave the souls freezing? Geographically speaking where is Abaton (in the story in RL it is in Türkiye if I remember correctly) Did the peculiar kings live in Abaton? What happened to those who borrowed a soul from the library and didn't return it? Was there a solution for this? What did it take to borrow a soul? I HAVE A MILLION QUESTIONS THAT WILL NEVER BE ANSWERED BECAUSE THE LOOP WAS LITTLE MENTIONED.I don't particularly care about war loops, or mine loops, or mega loops, or clan loops, or underground loops, or trap loops, or punishment loops or tourist loops. I JUST WANTED TO KNOW EVERYTHING ABOUT ABATON.

Okay, I know I said that I didn't like the second trilogy of MPHFPC, but I don't want to only focus on the negatives, so here are some things I enjoyed about it:

The Peculiar Children interacting with the modern world.

Getting to see more of their personalities.

Getting to see more of the Peculiar World.

Millard and Lilly (I'd read a whole book about them, I'm not even kidding. I wish we'd gotten to see so much more of them- I don't reread the second trilogy, but I do reread their scene together).

Thats all I can think of for now. But for anyone who thought I'd hate them for having a differing opinion, I promise I won't. I didn't care for the second trilogy, but I can still find good parts of it. And if you did enjoy it, that's wonderful! Even if you prefer it, that's still wonderful!
