Died on this day: fabulous 1950s rhythm and blues diva Ruth Brown (12 January 1928 – 17 November 2006). I was privileged to see “Miss Rhythm” perform several times over the years at Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly weekenders. She was like a regal, soulful earth mother. Even in failing health, Brown rocked the house like a pro and boy did she know how to milk a crowd. “The doctors told me I’d never walk again,” she’d declare. “And here I am!” Which always elicited an eruption of applause! For John Waters fans, Brown will always be Motormouth Maybelle in the definitive 1988 version of Hairspray. As Brown told NPR in 1997, she almost declined the part. “I had said, well, I'm not going to do this film, especially when they took me to wardrobe and brought that white wig out. I said, not on your life … (But Divine stepped in.) I called him the divine Divine. He came to me, and he said, “Girl, put that wig on your head and make some money.” And I said to him, “No, I'm going to lose every fan I've got in the world if I come out with this white wig.” And Divine said, “Well, I tell you what. no pressure and i realize this is a hs blog but do you have any particular tactics you use to draw hands? theyre rather hard for me and i admire how well you do it, posing-wise and anatomically n such

thank you!! 💚 i would advise you seek further advice elsewhere LOL because i am by no means a student of anatomy and most of everything i've learned has been observing other artists i admire but the best advice i can ever give is to start with your geometrical principles

you will have heard that the key to convincing organic forms is the juxtaposition of straight and curved lines (or curved lines which pull against each other in opposite directions). the way i see it is that straight lines provide structure and curved lines give mass, and the hand is a great canvas for demonstrating this. the back of the hand is bony and functional, but the heel of the palm gives it that bulging presence that makes it look like part of a human body (and this basically continues all the way down the fingers). so i always start drawing a hand with a shape that demonstrates both of these qualities, even if it's not necessarily from an angle where the hard and the soft parts of the hand would realistically be juxtaposed like that.

human body parts are different from objects in that they're animated (duh) and therefore there is power behind their movement, even in a lot of moments where they're supposedly sitting still. so in the same way straight and curved lines demonstrate the contrast between bony and fatty surfaces, reflex curves can show how the pulling of the soft muscles in the fingers strains against hard surfaces; this is especially obvious when the hand is grabbing or poking at something, but even when the hand acts on its own, the soft muscles strain against the hard bones or even the other muscles in the fingers! think of hyperextension as a kind of visual shorthand like squashing and stretching in animation. make it absolutely clear what you're communicating by exaggerating the form as far as you can push it.

as always, creating a strong shape sits higher than absolute fidelity to the human figure in my list of priorities, so making simplifications wherever i can serves the double purpose of making my life easier and letting me push shapes in ways that might not make sense otherwise. "quirk the pinky away from the rest of the hand" is common advice because it works as a way of adding character (you can see i do it in basically every example here) but you should also think about how the hand can communicate the character of the specific person it belongs to. when a hand isn't being used as a tool for interacting with the world, it's playing a part in body language, and hand gestures are very evocative body language! even beyond anatomical concerns, i always think about how the shape of a character's hand can harmonise with the rest of their design; hands can be thin and knuckley or fat and soft, fingers can be stubby or long, even fingertips and fingernails can be different shapes to suit the language being communicated

Honestly if someone told me "Beep beep" instead of shut up everytime they wanted me to shut up I think that shit would hurt SO MUCH MORE. Like imagine ur making a joke and u think its funny but then your friends are like "Beep beep" instead of "Shut up" HOW IS THAT NICER? I DON'T GET IT. LIKE OKAY IF I WENT TOO FAR JST SAY THAT DON'T USE LIKE AN ENTIRELY DIFFERENT PHRASE TO TELL ME I'M ANNOYING? JUST TELL ME U WANT ME TO STFU. If it wasn't obvious from the tags and shit this is me talking about Richie from IT and how in the book (from what I know about it I haven't fully read through it yet) people say "Beep beep Richie" when he goes too far or smth. I've also seen people use that phrase a LOT in fanfics and shit. I actually have no idea how Richie himself feels when people say this to him jst in my personal opinion if my friends said that to me, I would have a depressed baby moment. Ik some people probably see it as a nicer way of saying it but my friends coming up with a different way to tell me to shut up would make me cry. Bc how often do they need to say shut up that they felt the need to make a phrase specifically for it; for me. Idk just a nice little toilet thought I had.
