House Of Anubis: How the OG DutchBelgium show was butchered by its English Adaptation Part 3: Appie & Jeroen
Because part 1 and 2 were well received and I recently got questions for future parts, I hereby decided to finally make part 3! This one will tackle Jeroen and Appie, known as Jerome and Alfie in the English adaptation.
First of all, let's start with the second lovable himbo of the cast and one of the primary comedic relief characters, Appie. His character is one of the most obvious cases of the English adaptation neglecting storylines from the OG as well as one you could see how different they were going to be from their OG couterpart from the get-go.
For one, because the first OG actor for Appie quit playing in Het Huis Anubis as he wanted to pursue acting school and work on his craft, they had this plotline of him changing race due to it. I knew the storyline was clearly going to be dropped when I first laid eyes on his English counterpart, but aside from that I want to point out that any main character like Nina could have stayed on the show by making her change actress. This plotline's removal is where my stance on all the changes to Fabian especially as I discussed in part 1 stemming from homophobia towards Fabian's OG actor comes from, because a plotline to keep his love interest and have her remain as the leader is right here. No, Nickelodeon wanted a male heroic lead and I can see right through the bullshit.
In regards to his OG actors, Appie's first actor was Moroccan and his second was black like Alfie and there is of course the third actor from the final movie which served as an epilogue to the series really. Where Appie got cursed and flickered between being his black self and being white, as someone who changed race twice was an ideal sacrifice to this cult so they were trying to raceswap Appie again so he could be their sacrifice. This is also the movie where Appie gets together with Amber at long last. Their relationship is so different in the OG, like it goes from a slow-burn to becoming endgame at the very last adventure and giving all the shippers their moment to rejoice.
Also, small fun fact but the first actor, Achmed Akkabi, became one of those rare teen actors who blew up in a kid's show that actually retained a succesful career as an actor. He's arguably amongst the biggest Dutch millenial actors there is as he's one of the few I can actually name that I recall seeing in recent promoted projects such as Mocro Maffia (note to foreigners: Mocro is Dutch slang, originally stems from them copying the Dutch version of the 'N' word to mean a Moroccan gangster instead as they kind of fill that role in gang as well as rapper culture over here that black people seem to do in the US).
He has never been in a love triangle with Jeroen either. Speaking off the drama the English remake invented in the OG, Jerome being a cheater is too OOC to function. Jeroen literally was a faithful boy in the OG. First, there was Mara but she left after S1. Then in her place, another girl was quickly introduced, Noa who was secretly an Egyptian princess hunted down by a cult. Jeroen loved that girl. He was ready to betray friends and foe, double cross people in what realistically should be an internationally active cult, all just to protect her. The way he fought for Noa and would do anything to keep her safe, that Jeroen being a cheater?! Get out of here! Jeroen was a bad boy, but he was faithful as fuck. Jeroen and Noa were literally the 'bad boy & good girl' trope taken to the next level, and I love the ship (though I have nothing against Maya and her ship with Jeroen. Liliana De Vries is a gorgeous woman, like the OG cast consisted out of so many attractive people I was just a mess as a kid over this show okay).
Jeroen was an icon of an iconic IP, with his catch phrases and overall snarky attitude he was deeply beloved. To this day I low-key wonder if I roast people for being incompetent so often was influenced by Jeroen calling everyone failures all the time. Like the OG was that big to definitely influence the kids swept up in the Sibuna craze and when rewatching the OG all I can say is whenever I watch this guy, 'Alright, I can understand where that trait of mine might stem from'.
Also, shout out to Sven and Achmed's chemistry. They were low-key shippable, which combined with Appie crossdressing once or twice as a joke, makes me feel like Nickelodeon invented the Willow stuff too because Appie and Jeroen were a surprisingly popular ship.
This is a video compilation of Jeroen just calling people failure
youtube
Jeroen being the angst of the show:

Jeroen and Appie being shippable:
youtube
An Amber x Appie shipping video that actually contains one of Appie's crossdressing scenes (I totally forgot about him dressing up as a ballerina until I saw this video):
youtube
A Noa X Jeroen shipping video that uses a song from the OG, Ware Liefde (in English, True Love) of which the male voice actually is Jeroen's! It's one of my favorite's of the Anubis soundtrack.

Reminder to please, watch the dubbed version of the OG! You won't regret it!

still so fucking mad that the ONLY non-US song they play in the ENTIRE movie is the most US-sounding rap in the whole wide world, it plays for three fucking seconds, AND they only really play the French bit and as soon as the Arabic part starts they lower the voice and leave only the beat. WHERE IS MY GOLDEN AGE OF ISLAM ARAB MUSIC BITCHH
ok i'm gonna try rewatching tog again. surely my pc will behave this time
this is your last call to blacklist "tog rewatch" if u dont wanna see me talking about it etc etc
#listen i love this movie. i do#but we have to acknowledge that they did everything in their power to be as familiar as possible to Western audiences#booker can speak french. joe and nicky can speak italian. but no one can speak arabic or vietnamese#all the soundtrack is entirely composed of modern US music and the one moroccan song they play is this bullshit#even in the ending credits like#id have to rewatch to be 100% sure#but im pretty sure they only put historical pictures referencing western world history#the only bits i remember even referencing the third world was the bit about the DRC rapper#and the one about the asian man making technology for amputees#which are cool but both very clearly from like the last decade#there is NOTHING referencing third world history#like ur telling me they weren't there for the independence wars in africa in the 50s?#when joe IS FROM GHE MAGHREB?#for the love of god and everything that is holy be real#idk if they were too lazy to look up third world history and music or if they did it on purpose#but it's so annoying and should be called out more#like i get that just for having joe and not having he be a complete stereotype#this movie is already better than 99.99999% of first world movies when it comes to talking about us#but they still should have done fucking better#anyway#salt#tog rewatch#fun fact it took me 50 minutes to finish writing this post because of the sheer amount of times my pc froze#and i didnt even finish it on pc i just gave up and rewrote it on my phone

I have a question about music! I want to get more into Arabic music (women specifically) but the only Arabic musician I know of right now is Faouzia, who is AMAZING, however she doesn’t have a lot of music in Arabic. She uses cultural inspiration in her music (she’s Moroccan), but only has a couple songs with one Arabic word in it (Habibi & Puppet). I like listening to music in other languages and was hoping maybe you had recommendations for Arabic female musicians
never heard of faouzia! thanks for informing me of her. and yes im gonna first name some famous arabic pop singers and then ill move onto some that i also like:
nancy ajram
this woman is probably one of the biggest popstars in the arab world and has been for decades. she has a lot of great hits and id honestly just recommend going thru her music esp her older stuff bc you might like something in there. shes a lebanese christian
youtube
2. haifa wehbe
not a fan of hers but she has some hits and shes also one of the most renowned popstars.
youtube
3. myriam fares
also one of the bigger popstars, she also tends to play with a lot of arabic genres. shes mostly known for her dancing i think, shes quite talented but im not big on her music (im just sharing my faves btw so this is one of my faves and its clearly awful quality)
youtube
4. ruby
i looooooove ruby she was basically the only dark-skinned woman i saw in mainstream arab media and shes an awful dancer but makes amazing music and is also an actress (and ive heard shes quite good at that too) and is a good singer. also afaik shes one of the few female artists that didnt get plastic surgeries (if she did its so mild that its not noticeable). shes egyptian (previous singers i shared are all lebanese)
youtube
5. shadia mansour
one of the only female rappers i know of, i dont know much of her music but this song is really good and the lyrics are amazing. shes palestinian & british and this song is about palestinian resistance basically
youtube
6. elyanna
this one is more modern than my other recommendations fhsdfhds but shes quite good, iirc shes half palestinian half..chilean? i think?
youtube
7. samira said
shes north african, i Think tunisian, and one of the bigger popstars from the 2000s. i dont really listen to most of her music but this one's a classic:
youtube
8. fairuz
this one's quite old-fashioned but definitely a classic and her music continues to be played a lot today... especially by lebanese people. shes a lebanese singer who i think was really prominent for decades starting from the 50s. not sure how her music will be perceived by someone who didn't grow up hearing it tho. shes also lebanese christian
youtube
9. luka salam
only know one song of hers but its a nice one, the lyrics are great and i was obsessed with it at one point. i know shes got others. idk where shes from tbh
youtube
10. maryam saleh
i only know one song of hers too but its also a nice one. shes egyptian
youtube
adding more in reblogs bc i ran out of links to add lol

Middle Eastern Beats Revolutionizing Global Hip-Hop
```Blogger The Impact of Middle Eastern Music on Global Hip-Hop: A Dynamic Cultural Exchange ```
The role of Middle Eastern music in shaping the world of hip-hop is a vivid example of the impact of cultural exchange. This intriguing mixture of musical styles is opening a new dialogue between traditional Arabic harmonies and modern hip-hop rhythms, transforming the genre in exciting ways.
Fusion of Genres
Prominent Middle Eastern musicians are leading this musical transformation. They seamlessly integrate their native sounds with global hip-hop elements, earning worldwide recognition. Egyptian rapper Afroto, renowned for his enticing mix of Arabic melodies and Western rap, embodies this movement. His songs attract a wide audience, showcasing a remarkable fusion that goes beyond borders.
Regional Artists
Artists such as Faris Shafi from Pakistan and Dina Ayada from Morocco are contributing complex layers to this cultural dynamism. Faris, with his unique style, combines traditional South Asian influences with contemporary hip-hop rhythms, creating a sound that resonates across nations. Meanwhile, Dina skillfully weaves pop and R&B into her music, alongside Arabic beats, creating a distinctive soundscape.
Cultural Expression
In the Middle East, hip-hop, rock, and electronic music are not merely entertainment; they serve as powerful forms of cultural expression and agents of social change. They amplify young voices, offering platforms to address experiences and issues specific to their societal contexts. This cultural movement is further enhanced by social media, which supports the formation and growth of global communities.
International Festivals
The global music arena witnessed the inclusion of Middle Eastern hip-hop at the Wireless Festival Middle East in 2024. The festival, held in Abu Dhabi, featured performers like SZA and 21 Savage, alongside local stars such as Mazen, Dina Ayada, and Faris Shafi. These events emphasize how Middle Eastern hip-hop is establishing itself on the world stage.
Global Recognition
Middle Eastern producers are gaining accolades for their cutting-edge sounds. Moroccan producer Ramoon is famous for his skillful combination of traditional Moroccan elements with contemporary hip-hop, appealing to global audiences. Similarly, AY The Producer from Syria is making a significant impact by collaborating with well-known regional artists, further establishing Middle Eastern hip-hop's status in the international music scene.
Collaborations and Influences
The influence of Middle Eastern music extends beyond regional artists. Musicians worldwide are infusing their work with Middle Eastern elements, highlighting the broad appeal of these diverse sounds. Ramoon's collaborations with major artists like 6ix9ine demonstrate this expanding influence and the draw of Middle Eastern production styles.
UAE and Dubai as Creative Hubs
The UAE, particularly Dubai, is emerging as a vibrant center for hip-hop creativity. Local talents like Tayeb Santo, UglyMoss, and Molham are breaking new ground, infusing the genre with rich cultural stories while challenging social norms. These artists represent a fresh wave of creativity that bridges traditional Middle Eastern culture with contemporary hip-hop styles.
Egyptian and Lebanese Influences
In Egypt, prominent figures like Afroto and DizzyTooSkinney are leading the hip-hop movement in the Arab world. Their music showcases the strong blend of old and new sounds. Likewise, Lebanese artists are serving as a musical conduit, introducing listeners to a rich cultural landscape.
Global Reach
The influence of Middle Eastern hip-hop extends beyond its immediate geographic confines. In countries like Canada, France, Belgium, and the USA, there's an increasing interest in this unique sound. Social media and streaming services are key in facilitating this cultural enthusiasm, alongside international music festivals that serve as platforms for displaying these varied styles.
Best Practices and Advancements
Artists and producers can harness the potential of cultural fusion. By exploring Middle Eastern rhythms, there's potential to develop captivating sounds that draw global interest. Collaborations with international hip-hop figures can produce innovative music rich in cultural context.
Social media serves as a valuable tool for disseminating hip-hop styles and building international communities. Musicians can utilize these platforms to connect with a global audience, showcasing their work and cultural stories. Engaging with local music scenes in the Middle East provides insight and collaboration opportunities that enrich the global hip-hop landscape.
Actionable Insights
Incorporating Traditional Elements: Weave Middle Eastern melodies into hip-hop to add exciting flavors.
Social Media Utilization: Implement social media strategies to expand the reach of Middle Eastern hip-hop.
