"NAZI FLIER ESCAPES FROM MONTEITH CAMP," Toronto Star. May 13, 1943. Page 2. ---- Believed to Have Scored a Two or Three-Hour Start on Searchers ---- A military dragnet went into operation in Northern Ontario last night following the escape of Hans Hilpert, 25, German airman, from the prisoners of war camp at Monteith, 40 miles south of Timmins. Military officials believed Hans mingled with civilian construction workers and made his way out the gate Wednesday afternoon.
He was first noticed as missing at the 5 p.m. roll call. It was possible, a military spokesman said, he may have had two or three hours start on searchers.
A description was flashed to district-headquarters here by Col. R. H. Bliss, officer commanding the internment camp. A similar report was sent to Ottawa.
His description is: Age, 25; height, 6 feet 3 inches; weight, not reported; eyes, blue; fresh complexion and "no peculiar distinguishing marks."

“New Settlers Doing Well in North,” North Bay Nugget. November 25, 1932. Page 13. ---- Group Around Matheson Now Appears To Be Comfortably Settled in Homes --- Matheson, Nov. 25. - According to reports the land settlement scheme is proving a success. Speaking with some homesteaders, the writer found all are well satisfied with their new homes and lands with the exception of a few, who became dissatisfied and left for the South. It is claimed another contingent of 1300 are to come North in the spring to locate around the district of Matheson and Monteith.
The first settlers to arrive early in the season are comfortably settled in their warm cabins. They are all well supplied with winter clothing supplied by the Land Settlement Bureau. They appear to enjoy the winter snows that have come upon us to stay.

I thought I had all the time in the world to rail against him and his dopey little Glee Club. Oh, it’s just so pointless. All that potential.
