On February 26th 1672  the Border woollen industry was  established when  Philip van der Straten of Bruges set up the first mill dressing and refining wool at Kelso
Van den Straten came over to Scotland to set up the business, but first had to wait for the correct paperwork to be completed, by the powers that be, when it did it read;
‘Anent a petition presented by Philippus van der Straten… intending to reseid in this country and imploy a considerable stock of money in dressing and refining of wooll, in order to which he hath already sett up a work and imployed diverse workmen who are now refining and dressing of Scottes wooll at Kelso… being born in Bruges in Flanders.’                         Register of the Privy Council.
This certainly wasn’t the first time a Flemish man came over to ply his trade here, the first influx was said to have happened in the 11th century,.The Flemings were so expert in making woollen cloth, that it was said of them that their skill in the art of weaving was a peculiar gift conferred by nature. Large numbers of weavers came over from Flanders.
In the reign of Alexander III. considerable quantities of wool were exported to the Continent in exchange for linen, silks, and broadcloth; but there is no mention in the records of those times, so far as I can see, but a lot of our mediaeval records were lost when Edward I plundered the country and took everything that  defined our nationality south in an attempt to turn us into his fiefdom.
About the year 1600 seven Flemings were brought to Edinburgh to instruct the people how to make "seys" and broadcloth at home, so as to be independent of a supply from England. There were many difficulties in the way, however, and no record remains to show that anything came of the scheme. When "the Hospital of our Lady," which had been founded in Leith Wynd, Edinburgh, by Bishop Spens of Aberdeen in 1479, passed into the hands of the Town Council in 1619, it was converted into a work-house, and named Paul's Work.
The woollen industry really took off in 1771 with the introduction of stocking frames by a canny merchant, Bailie John Hardie. The Pringle brand began life in 1815, with Barrie, Innes Henderson, Lyle & Scott, Peter Scott and many others following.
Over time, stockings evolved into ‘combination’ garments, and eventually knitted underwear made the leap into outerwear, in the form of pullovers, cardigans and the classic British style icon, the ‘twinset’, invented by Pringle’s.
The woollen industry saw a downturn in the late 20th century due to overseas competition, but is thriving once again, with renewed emphasis on design, superb quality, cutting-edge technology and exquisite hand finishing.
Hawick has a long association with the world’s most famous designers, from Dior, Bernat Klein and Chanel to Vivienne Westwood and Clements Ribiero.
Today, couturiers and designers from Italy, France, London’s Savile Row and Highland estates are still regular visitors to Hawick’s mills. And the Hawick-couture partnership is a secret no more!

Talbot Rice Gallery

/ Untitled, 2018/2023, Sammy Baloji
/ Terra Rationarium, 2018, Cian Dayrit
The installation was exhibited in an empty stepped hall. Various green plants are regularly placed in golden vases. At the same time, a piece of sacred music was playing. This made me feel the communi- cation and connection between plants, they are like a community, and even have their own culture. (p1)
The objects that people use daily can reflect his region, habits, hobbies, work and relation- ships, etc. Therefore, it can be said that a per- son’s belongings can represent the person. (p2)

/ Copperheads No.401-470, Moyra Davey
This photographer photographed coins of the same denomination with varying degrees of wear. In these enlarged photos of coins, we can clearly see the traces of nature. It could be corrosion, it could be wear, it could be patina. This reminds methat when artificial objects are inter- vened by nature, their value may not be changed, or they may have high- er or lower value. Likewise, how are these values assessed?

The artist extracted the texture of the tree in the photography and printed it on the glass through UV White Print, creating a double visual effect. The tex- ture expressed by the printing of mod- ern technology replaces the original texture of the tree. This kind of conflict between technology and nature makes me very interesting

/ The Plot (Utopia Bloemen), 2018, Goldin+Senneby
The artist acquired a wsteland in Bel- gium on top of a former coal mine. Find fossils of a carboniferous forest on the land, it triggered ideas of a deep time, beyond private property.
The artist draws a series of fossil pat- terns through the coal in the site. I am fascinated by this way of recording and creating through the materials of thesubjects the research.

/ Bernat Klein
This is a display board for fabrics of the same colour. Pig- ments are actually made by grinding natural substances with different colours into powder. Therefore almost all craft ma- terials of all artificial items come from nature. However, this cannot be reflected in the final product. It makes people for- get that our life is made of nature.

Research Narrative #022
About "Bernat Klein," since it is an exhibition about textile design, it is more related to the fashion industry. At first glance, it does not seem to have much to do with graphic design, but I learned a lot from these patterns. Many of his textiles and paintings are inspired by nature, and many of his iconic fabrics do not come from Scotland's landscape, but present a sense of exoticism. The blended patterns follow certain rules while changing colors, making them suitable for large areas of use.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This checkerboard-like structure and the intended use reminded me of "Battenburg markings" - the patterns used on police cars, fire trucks, and ambulances. Similarly, for the purpose of increasing recognition and for the freedom of innovative and fashionable expression, clothes have more flexibility, while the patterns on vehicles are strictly limited, finding a balance between aesthetics and safety is not an easy task, and these government-mandated patterns also involve specific conditions of different landscapes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
During the exhibition, Leanne and I talked about her project: she saw similarities between the color arrangement of these fabrics and the way "seasonings" can be used. She wants to talk about family relationships through the metaphor of "seasonings" for "cooking." I think this is a very smart approach, which inspired me to offer my view: the materials used for Bernat's designed patterns are like unstable and changeable seasonings. Seasonings can be powdery, liquid, or large solid pieces, so what kind of effect can be achieved when these things are mixed in a specific visual way? The carrier of these textures and colors - the dishes, can also be reconsidered. Do they have to be circular? What if the shape has different mappings with different relationships?

Bernat Klein Studio (currently abandoned) High Sunderland, Selkirk, Scotland, UK; 1969-72
Peter Womersley, Ove Arup & Partners
«This building, in essence a delicate table of concrete with glazed sides beneath two tiers of overhanging shelves, stands in a grove of trees which - as the architect no doubt intended - complement its proportions and style. The detailing, both inside and out, is restrained and immaculate, which is of more than usual importance in a structure which invites those outside to look into a through from every angle. The area is remote and scenically distinguished, and the successful placing in it of this sophisticated building, which makes no concessions to regional taste, places feathers in several caps - including that of the local planning authority».

Archive Visit • Heriot Watt University Textile Collection • 19th October 2017
I arranged another appointment to view some of the archive material at the HW Textile Collection, with a particular focus on Bernat Klein (obviously).
Helen, the archivist, presented a selection of woven cloth samples dating back to the 60′s. These were of particular interest due to their evident portrayal of Klein’s unique design approach.
Plus the colours were incredible.
Almost 60 years on and the pinks were as vibrant as I could ever imagine.
A wonderful source of inspo. I have been particularly captured by the structure of the cloth, alongside the incredible colour information.
Figure 1 and 3 perfectly demonstrate how light the fabric is when held up against daylight, yet when placed flat it appears bulky, thick and heavy.
This is yet another deception Klein has created through smart design.  〰
