I am six years late to the party but I just finished Strong Female Protagonist and wow. What a great look at super hero stories. I'm sad it will likely never get finished. I love how it humanized the villians without forgiving them. Menace was a monster but how could he be anything else? Children were turned into weapons and the fallout is basically exactly what you would expect. There is also such a good look at the use of power and what it means.
If you're okay with an unfinished story, check it out. I had to read it through the Wayback Machine since the actual site isn't working.

guys. you should go read this adorable graphic novel. sweet young closeted lesbian meets selkie merfolk and has unexpected summer romance.
a story of love and self-acceptance with angst, drama, cute seals, and awkward teen romance.
it’s called The Girl From the Sea and it’s by Molly Knox Ostertag - who is that, you ask? She is a cartoonist and a writer for memorable The Owl House episodes including Enchanting Grom Fight and Yesterday’s Lie as well as, oh? The wife of ND Stevenson?! Anyway, definitely check it out:

This makes me so sad, it looks so good!
Too bad we're past the "we need to be good to get customers" stage of streaming and well into the "we need to do the bare fucking minimum for everyone who isn't our investors" stage.

i fell into a rabbit hole of old nd stevenson comics / writing while looking for a specific quote, and i was reading about him hanging out with his now wife molly ostertag and her friends after a toronto comic convention (linked here; warning that the article is pretty old and uses his deadname) and i realized something…
is that… brennan lee mulligan in his tony pepperoni t-shirt
(for those who don’t know, molly and brennan co-created the comic strong female protagonist)
#brennan lee mulligan#nd stevenson#molly ostertag#strong female protagonist#it could easily be any other friend of molly’s but the thought made me chuckle#i don’t normally speculate on real life like this but the mint milano’s story is one BLeeM’s told so many times#that the connection was easy to make#but it kinda warms my heart#it reminds me of that story about how nd ended up in the wtnv crew’s hotel room at dashcon

As a Japanese person who is used to reading manga, I find comics outside Japan to be so different beyond size, color, reading direction, and language that I wish there was a book explaining comics of various kinds and how to approach them. For example, I have read The Witch Boy by Molly Ostertag, Magical Boy by The Kao, Hound by Paul J. Bolger and Barry Devlin, An Táin by Colmán Ó Raghallaigh, and the excerpts of Franco-Belgian comics in the guide Invitation au monde de la Bande Dessinée (はじめての人のためのバンド・デシネ徹底ガイド, 2013).
Neither The Witch Boy nor Hound were divided by chapter to my surprise—especially Hound since it was first released in three volumes. Dialogue in Franco-Belgian comics are lengthy compared to what I see in manga, which the academic book Les échanges culturels entre Manga et Bande dessinée : Historie, Adaptation et Création (日仏マンガの交流 ヒストリー・アダプテーション・クリエーション, 2015) has commented on.
Hound was created by at least two Irish people and edited by one British person (Hugh Welchman) but I find this graphic novel to be similar to a certain kind of Franco-Belgian comics like the works of Jean "Mœbius" Giraud. These comics have impressive art and imagery—and I love how Hound portrays Cú Cullan's berserk state and uses dashes of red in an otherwise black and white setting—but they give me little or no idea about what's going on unlike, say, Fullmetal Alchemist by Hiromu Arakawa. I have heard of the international popularity of manga—in France in particular—but I wonder why people outside Japan embrace manga so much when it's not like comics produced in their countries.
Thoughts?

The Witch Boy: A Book Recommendation
So, I bought some books from the closest Books a Million and came across this adorable, fun little graphic novel.
“The Witch Boy” centers around a boy named Aster living in a world rich in shapeshifters and witches. Per tradition, boys grow up as shapeshifters and girls grow up as witches— no exceptions of the contrary. But, Aster has other interests and wishes to pursue witchcraft despite this tradition. Through the story he meets a spunky human girl named Charlie, whom he quickly becomes friends with. Along the way, the threat of his sudden missing family members and demons hang over him.
I adore this little graphic novel. Finished it in under an hour. It’s a nice little fantasy story. I really wished it was longer, actually. I’d love to see more of this world’s magic system, it seems fascinating! I’d definitely dabble in shapeshifting as a girl, lol. It’s got some fun characters and wholesome little LGBTQ+ nods. Also there’s a brief Steven Universe cameo and I just—
Charlie and Aster are such wholesome friends. Again, I wish this story were longer. I wanna see more of these characters and learn more about them and their personalities. It’s got a “big family” dynamic going on and I love those in fictional works. :3
Anyhow, this is a little book recommendation for this sweet little graphic novel. :)
EDIT: THERE’S TWO MORE BOOKS I NEED THEM NOOOWWW! Read tags to see me descend into madness.

Because really, Morgan's biggest secret is that she has a lot of secrets, including the one about wanting to kiss another girl. Then one night, Morgan is saved from drowning by a mysterious girl named Keltie. The two become friends and suddenly life on the island doesn't seem so stifling anymore. But Keltie has some secrets of her own. And as the girls start to fall in love, everything they're each trying to hide will find its way to the surface…whether Morgan is ready or not. Graphic novel, young adult, fantasy, romance, contemporary
The Masquerade Series (The Traitor Baru Cormorant, The Monster Baru Cormorant, The Tyrant Baru Cormorant) by Seth Dickinson
Tomorrow, on the beach, Baru Cormorant will look up from the sand of her home and see red sails on the horizon. The Empire of Masks is coming, armed with coin and ink, doctrine and compass, soap and lies. They'll conquer Baru’s island, rewrite her culture, criminalize her customs, and dispose of one of her fathers. But Baru is patient. She'll swallow her hate, prove her talent, and join the Masquerade. She will learn the secrets of empire. She’ll be exactly what they need. And she'll claw her way high enough up the rungs of power to set her people free. In a final test of her loyalty, the Masquerade will send Baru to bring order to distant Aurdwynn, a snakepit of rebels, informants, and seditious dukes. Aurdwynn kills everyone who tries to rule it. To survive, Baru will need to untangle this land’s intricate web of treachery - and conceal her attraction to the dangerously fascinating Duchess Tain Hu. But Baru is a savant in games of power, as ruthless in her tactics as she is fixated on her goals. In the calculus of her schemes, all ledgers must be balanced, and the price of liberation paid in full. Fantasy, epic fantasy, secondary world, politics, series

So apparently when you make a heart with your hands on a Twitch stream, this little hearts animation goes off.
Which Brennan did at the very end of the Wayfinder fundraising stream, and it crashed the video, but not the audio or the chat.
The stream raised $5,838.66 of a $5k goal, and the donation link is still open if people want:
And this is what the Wayfinder Experience is. If you're a fan of Brennan's, you've probably heard him talk about it:
The fundraiser was for the Hero Fund, which provides financial aid to both day and overnight campers.
And yeah, I donated. My LARPing days are long behind me, and they were not a healthy time, but Wayfinder seems to be what a LARP environment SHOULD be. The kind of thing that kids should experience. So yeah, I helped out.

okay so y'all I'm jumping between obsessions very quickly recently but the latest one is the webcomic Strong Female Protagonist by Brennan Lee Mulligan, illustrated by Molly Ostertag, and it's just so fucking GOOD
like first of all its characters are just so compelling and well written, as well as consistently characterized despite the comic literally being written over a period of years
and then the story is so cool, cause not only does it talk about the typical superhero stuff, it also deconstructs everything you think you know about how superheroes work and the way their stories are told
and it explores what it's like to be a college student, and it brilliantly navigates several different perspectives on what it means to be "good" in the first place, and anyways it's really good you should go check it out
(originally I had this in one giant block of text but it was garish and so I split it up so that you could actually, you know, read it)
#screaming crying throwing up#sorry for the rant#but I'm currently in love with this comic#brennan lee mulligan#molly ostertag#sfp comic#sfp#strong female protagonist comic#strong female protagonist
