Yoshi always got nervous when it was time for the annual checkups, and that had been known to make John's job tougher than it needed to be. Yet Moira's presence seemed to soothe the bear. When Yoshi was relaxed, telling Moira some story, John was able to check him over and give him a clean bill of health.

From then on, Moira became a quintessential part of the annual physicals for John's menagerie. He couldn’t ever quite figure out what it was about her that all the animals felt so at ease with, but it saved him multiple hours of hassle every year. And for that, he was eternally grateful.

The little breakroom is cozy, she decides as she plants her ass on the couch and props her legs on the other side. Cozy enough that she can already imagine some of her things here and there. A bag of Black Ivory coffee beans beside a La Marzocco Strada Electronic Paddle, a seventeenth century Persian rug, a Parsifal Round Fendi couch complete with a Metropolis coffee table, the ideas are endless, and she can’t help but begin to call in orders from her high end clients. It’s the center of her focus until a ringtone echoes from the coffee table and, her being who she is, reaches over and takes the iPhone, carefully looking over the contact.

Nannie Moira? Must be the Scots granny, she thinks and answers the phone.

“Hello!” she chirps politely and the response she gets is not one she expects.

John?

“I’ve been called quite a few things in my life, but ‘John’ has never been one of them.” She’s already pulling up the 141’s files, sliding to “John MacTavish” before she enters “Moira MacTavish” into a search bar. Of course, she comes up within the first ten searches and she smiles.

Oh, Christ, I thought I’d rung my ogha.

“Oh, you did, Missus Moira,” she answers. “I’m afraid John is out right now, but he left his phone and you seemed quite important, so why not answer?” she smiles. “John talks quite a bit about you Missus Moira.” Her eyes scan the newspaper articles from Stirling, Family of Five Killed In Massive Car Pile-Up, Leaves Boy, Two, Orphaned. “Best woman he knows, yes?”

Aye, my ogha, John. Raised the lad myself.

“Missus Moira—”

Call me Nannie Moira, darling. Any friend of John’s is a child o’ mine.

“Of course, Nannie Moira,” she smiles. “So, tell me more of John. He’s so tight-lipped about himself.”

It’s a good half hour before the door to the break room opens and in piles four men who stop like deer in headlights as they take in the woman—they do not know—sitting on their couch, laughing as she answers, “Nannie Moira! You did not say that to Johnny’s girlfriend!” Whatever response she gets, they can tell it makes her laugh because she presses the back of her hand to her mouth.

Soap’s already headed her way at the mention of his grandmother; she bats at his hand when he tries to take the phone from her. “Oh, Nannie, I think John just got back, would you like to talk to him?” she holds out the phone expectingly and chastises, “Nannie’s very upset you didn’t call her last night.”

He takes the phone, “Nannie, are you alright?...well, yes, I know I didn’t call, I was—yes, Nannie…yes ma’am…I promise I will call you tomorrow night…I love you, Nannie.” He hangs up and glares down at her. “Congratulations, you’re invited to midnight mass on Christmas Eve.”

“Can’t wait,” she replies with a smirk and turns her gaze to Ghost. “Hi, Simon.”

“How,” he starts darkly and stalks towards her in slow, warning steps. “Did you get in here?”

She blinks owlishly at him. “Let’s see, I forged a key card, showed it to the enlisted at the gate, and you might want to actually enlighten them on who they should and should not let it, and walked right in.” she sniffs and tips her head to the air vent that they now notice is missing a covering. “Air vent was a little snug too.”

“I’ve half a mind to arrest you.”

“Oh, I can agree you do have half a mind. It’s why you’ve never managed to beat me in any fight we have.” She raises her hands like she’s waiting cuffs. “Go ahead. But if you arrest me, you won’t have a way to blow up that Syrian power plant you all are planning without leaving someone behind to make sure it does.”

That stops all of them and they stare at her, Price especially when he walks over. “You’re the woman Soap mentioned.” They all ignore how Ghost absolutely glowers at Soap who has now found the ceiling much more interesting. “How much do you know?”

“About the power plant or the mission?”

“All of it.”

She taps a pointer to her chin. “Well, that’s no fun to tell and not get rewarded. I’m not a good girl unless I get a reward, Captain Price,” she purrs and gazes at him. “In return for this information, I’m going to give you my file and you will strongly consider my…introduction, into the 141.”

“No, absolutely not,” Ghost gripes. “I am not working with you.”

“Oh, don’t hurt my feelings, Simon. We both know you and I work so well.”

“You are a killer.”

“I’m a murderer of very bad people, the same as you. So, I’d be careful waving that hypocrisy stick around—might end up with it too far up your ass.”

Ghost turns to Price. “Her name is Spades, she’s an international assassin responsible for taking out targets with the biggest bounties.”

“So, by technicality, I’m a bounty hunter,” she adds. “He’s right though, I do take out quite a few bounties. But believe it or not, the most scandalous thing about me is that I am a morally good assassin. I don’t kill good people. Only very, very, very bad people. Like the Guestroom Butcher.” She ignores the shocked stares. “God, I had to spend months in London before I got that guy. I hate London.”

“You—you killed the Guestroom Butcher?” the fourth man asks, and she peers at him.

“You must be Gaz. And yes, I did. His name was Albert Franklin. A physics teacher at a local secondary school who was a janitor part time. Spent years traveling to different guestrooms all over London to murder tourists. Such an odd man. He talked a lot before I killed him. Kept muttering something about his late wife being killed by tourists decades prior. Sad, but understandable as to why he targeted tourists.”

“And how do we know you killed him?” Gaz inquires.

“Well, my name isn’t Spades for a reason, dear,” she explains and looks at Simon. “Have my card still?” He wordlessly pulls it out and hands it to Gaz, who looks over it. “That’s my calling card. I leave it on bodies so that police know I was there. Look up the case on the internet. There’s a photo of my card.”

“How do you know someone didn’t forge this?”

“All my cards are made by hand, with gold inlay. Signed too. No one can forge my card. And no one in the business is foolish enough to get on my radar for pretending to be me. I’m one of the best there is for a reason.”

Price looks at her. “How do you know about the mission?”

“Simon forgets that he shouldn’t carry around information on a phone.”

“It was locked,” is all he replies when Price glares at him.

“Oh, it was, I unlocked it with a hacker’s bypass.” She clears her throat. “As for the mission…I know the logistics of what you’re planning. I know someone is going to have to stay behind to make sure the pressure in the facility gets high enough that it blows. I also have a bypass for that in which we don’t have to hold a funeral for someone here.”

They stare at her, watching, waiting.

She lifts a small plug, no bigger than a thumb. “This, is a kill-switch made by one of the scientists who helped build the power plant. When the Syrian government found out he was gay, they had him executed. Before that, he made this as insurance and sold it to the black market the United States frequents. I paid quite a pretty penny for it.”

“What’s it do?” Soap asks.

“This little plug will directly overload the system in fifteen minutes. There is no way to stop the overload once it’s been activated by this. That’s why it’s the kill-switch.” She rolls it in her fingers. “You insert this into the mainframe and in exactly fifteen minutes, you blow everything in a ten mile radius to kingdom come.” She smiles. “Only takes five to get out of the facility and to the rescue chopper. Ten minutes to get outside the blast radius.”

They’re silent and she knows she’s found her entrance point as she rises from the couch; their eyes follow her.

“I’ll be in my quarters. Simon, I chose the room between you and Gaz since it was vacant. Oh, and Captain Price, there’s going to be quite a few boxes being delivered to the base in the next two hours. If you would, have someone bring them to my room so I can set them up.” she gathers her things. “Also, if one of you, I’m hoping it’ll be Soap, can help me move out all that ugly military furniture from my quarters, I would appreciate it.”

She walks past them without a care in the world.

“Can’t believe you plebians live like this. What ever happened to having good furniture and a supported spinal column when you sleep?”

The door closes behind her and Simon’s the first to break the silence. “You’re just going to let her stay?”

Price glares at him. “The fuck am I supposed to do? She looks more prepared for our mission than we are right now.”

Ghost growls, legitimately growls, and says, “I cannot believe I have to fucking work with her.”

This, doesn’t stop Soap from raising his hand and asking, “Wait, so fraternization only works on folks in the military right?”

“SOAP, SHUT THE FUCK UP!”

WHERE'S RASPUTIN IV?

Been wondering where the heck Rasputin IV got to after the battle vs ORCHIS/ENIGMA? Me too. For those that haven't....

Who is Rasputin IV?

Rasputin is a *chimera* - a concept first shown in Powers of X #1. Mutant technology, Sinister style - completely devoid of ethics. Chimera are genetically engineered beings made from two or more mutant gifts in the same body, sometimes with elements of the original's personality or traits. Many timelines and Krakoas have produced them but it's always one man behind it - Mr Sinister. Technically he is the first chimera (according to Moira) due to his habit of wearing other mutant's gifts like hats. We know he has John Proudstar/Thunderbird's gifts (somehow. No, seriously, how tf did he get that?) as well as at least one psychic and metamorph.

Not Rasputin IV, but it was our first look at a Rasputin chimera.

Spoilers for Sins of Sinister and Fall of X. Reader beware!

Other chimera are made from scratch, like Cardinal or Rasputin. Most are fusion dance mashups of two mutants but they're all the same concept. Sadly they are among the last mutants in a hellish dystopia that Moira's 6th life has become, and they all die pretty quickly in an act of heroism. Speculation was rife at the time, with many hoping we'd see her again. Fortunately, my pick for the best writer in comics atm decided to use her.

Sins of Sinister/Immoral X-Men

The Rasputin that ended up in the present came from the Sins of Sinister/Red Diamond timeline. After Sinister corrupted the Quiet Council they turned on him and he was kept alive for as long as he was useful. He was pretty damn useful, creating mindless abominations to destroy Arakko, achieve FTL travel, wipe out ORCHIS/The Avengers/ The FF, take over the world, turn the universe into a horror, and wiped out countless civilizations leaving only Sinisterised mutants left. Under threat of death he blurted that he could pull off a stable chimera with 5 mutant gifts, earning a stay of execution. He definitely delivered on that promise.

Drumroll please... RASPUTIN IV

Her genetic payload is

- Telepathy from Quentin Quire.

- Healing and 'aggression' from Laura Kinney/Wolverine.

- Intangibility from Kitty Pryde.

- Organic metal skin and strength from Colossus.

- Forcefields from Unus the Untouchable.

- plus a Soulsword a la Magik (no idea how he made this happen. He's the worst, but he does amazing work.)

She's beast mode incarnate. Look at that design! Sinister, bastard that he is, took advantage of her nature as a true believer and naiveté so she'd lead the search for his missing lab to reset the universe. Importantly, he removed the brainwashing and gave her free will - sold her a heroic lie. They also had to leave Earth immediately as Sinister definitely outlived his usefulness and the QC were trying to kill him, though once they escaped they shrugged and forgot about him. For 900 years they traversed a universe of peril and perversion until she found what was needed. 900 years! Then she found out the whole thing was a lie and that Sinister is an utter bastard.

She was... not happy about that and from this point viewed Sinister as the 'Great Deceiver', 'He Who Burned Paradise.' In a great villain speech he admits he can't defeat her in a fight, but he never gave her the power of flight and he ejects her into SPAAACE. Doomed to die in the void, Mother Righteous made an offer. Rasputin IV would get her chance at revenge/justice, though she unwittingly gave MR power over her.

After the reset, many things made their way back to the present, to 616. A whole lot of information and one genetically engineered superhero bad bitch. Great choice IMO. Her self appointed mission was to ensure Sinister faces justice for his crimes. Essex was not expecting the gal he left to die to pop out of his cloning machine. In fact, it's not even the same Sinister. Fortunately he has many crimes to be tried for.

Which she did! She walloped him and delivered him to the quiet council in a force field. She was also just a little bit giddy at getting to visit what was ancient history or legend for her. More than giddy, actually. Part of the dichotomy of Rasputin IV is that she's a genetically engineered superhero bad bitch, and she's an idealist - a true believer in Krakoa. A Krakoa that only existed in stories in her time. A believer in a better future and in doing things the right way. (You'll note Kitty Pryde finds herself attracted to Rasputin - the Colossus/Magik combo with a splash of herself. I love it.) The shiniest girl acted as security for the quiet council during the aftermath of the Sinister crisis, but her character doesn't progress much until the Hellfire Gala.

She gets to be a normal gal, wearing a lovely gown, almost certainly for the first time, and squeeing over Ms Marvel (which she totally deserves after 900 years of war, black ops, horror and Sinister.) She's so damn cute, look at her! She knows Kamala's story well, better than Kamala herself thanks to future knowledge. It's super cool to see the Fan girl ascended get a taste of hero worship. Tumblr's image limit has never felt more oppressive because her every appearance is glorious and I want to add them all. Expect more posts with Rasputin IV highlights.

Sadly, ORCHIS (Booooooooo!) crashed the party and started killing everyone. After Jean Grey fell all the mutants fought back with righteous fury. Rasputin and Ms Marvel teamed up to trash Stark Sentinels. They probably would have won a complicated victory, but Xavier made a deal with ORCHIS forcing all mutants off planet. Those who weren't able to resist his psychic hijacking anyway. Rasputin IV was one who could, joining the resistance while working with Xavier on combatting a Dominion - an AI god, more or less.

Mein Gott that art is beautiful.

Surprise surprise! She's crucial. Everyone would have died multiple times without her... and the mutants won, saving Earth, the universe, and every living thing in it! Crushing ORCHIS into bigot paste and earning a future for everyone, but better than the one she came from. As for the AI God - long story short Hope, Legion, Prodigy, Askani, and Jean Grey kill then resurrect Jeanix - Jean who's the Phoenix, now and forever. She calls on the spirits of every mutant, everywhere and everywhen to bust him up and leave his corpse fragments around the Earth as warning to any other cosmic predators.

But Rasputin IV hasn't forgotten the asshole that got them into this situation - Mr Sinister. As soon as everyone is safe she and Exodus are like 'let's kill his ass.' Destiny says some enigmatic stuff and then Rasputin disappears from the story. Seriously, she's just gone after this page. That huge splash page in Uncanny X-Men #700 where Krakoa is leaving and everyone is weeping? OMEGA SENTINEL is there but no Rasputin. She definitely hasn't shown up in From The Ashes and I doubt she will, despite being a powerhouse and a true believer. So, where's my favourite shiny girl?

Let's be honest - when the toys were being put back in the toy box she wasn't killed off or sent back to her timeline (cos it doesn't exist.) After the fight was won she stood with Exodus and wanted to kill Sinister. He escaped and instead of closure the story marched towards a status quo where Krakoa happened but it's definitely past tense and was a bad idea (sez them.) Able to be plucked off the shelf should a future writer use her, but in de facto stasis. She is very powerful and difficult to write, after all. That's a boring Doylist explanation and frankly a waste of an amazing character. If they can have idiots like Raze stick around, they can at least tell us what happened to her. So, some possible Watsonian explanations..

- Maybe she chose to join the mutants with Krakoa in the White Hot Room. The promised land, as Exodus might call it. Krakoa *is* what she's been fighting for for 900 years, and she does deserve rest as much as anyone. A weapon, bioengineered for war and bound by lies choosing peace and building the safe place does have a certain poetry to it - but if Exodus didn't I don't think she would either. They are two different brands of true believer, but there's at least two tasks remaining they're both invested in. Killing Sinister and fighting for mutant safety/freedom. Then again, 900 years of battle and misery. If anyone deserves heaven, it's her.

- Maybe she left with Exodus to wherever he goes when the plot doesn't need him. He's grown though, not the Magneto worshipper he was. His position seems to be pro-Hope anti-Sinister. After observing Rasputin with Kamala though, she seems to have a healthier on/off button for Krakoa-ism. Considering Exodus showed up to do jack shit in Heir of Apocalypse, and barely reacted to Sinister... I doubt it. Though a new 'brotherhood' of sorts with those two would be great. I'd read it. Hell, I'd write it.

- Maybe she moved to Arakko? She doesn't know anyone there and has no ties, though she would fit right in. The Broken Land, a mutant homeland where pain is spoken aloud, heard, and community built. It'd be great, though From The Ashes doesn't seem to have much interest in Arakko.

- Maybe she went back to the future... NOPE! It doesn't exist anymore for one, and it's also a hellscape to put it lightly. Scratch that.

- Retired quietly by herself? Nobody can argue she deserves it, but she's a hero - hardcoded in her DNA. Mutants are in deep shit and I don't believe she'd stay out of that fight.

Classic X-Men 12 (August 1987)

This is the classic version of the issue that brings Magneto back, and all the additions to it are, happily, also Magneto-focused. They're also a huge deal, central to understanding who Magneto is: it's the Holocaust backstory, here referenced in the pages added to the main story, and then fully explored in the back-up story.

(Why does Moira MacTaggert's desk have a golden Xavier dildo? Let's not worry about that for now.)

This is a tumblr where I make jokes about Xavier dildos so obviously I'm not going to get too deeply into the Holocaust, but just to note that this isn't the first time this was revealed about Magneto, but we're encountering it here for the first time chronologically in our reading (i.e. it first got explored in the early 80s, I think): but this is a detailed telling of the story, covering not just Auschwitz but Magneto's love for fellow internee Magda, their escape and their wandering around Communist Eastern Europe in the years following the war, and the birth of their daughter, Anya.

Then, of course, it all goes wrong: Magneto kills a policeman while protecting his daughter and Magda, terrified, takes the baby and flees.

Magneto winds up in Paris, before heading for Scotland and his latest plan.

Obviously this is all fucking amazing (and sexy?! Look at that ass). Teling it in twelve pages feels like a challenge and yet, a bit like Weapon X and the subsequent endless re-explorations of Wolverine's backstory, what more do you need to know than the first outline of it? The seeds of both Magneto's evil and his eventual evolution into something nobler are all here: this is the most ambitious and probably the most crucial of these back-up stories, and in itself a crucial X-Men moment.
