I guess my #1 pet peeve for akechi takes (aside from the pervasiveness of fandom pancake akechi, though that's honestly kinda related) is when people scrub him clean of his rough sides & bad personality to focus more on the Prince side. Which there aren't many of those these days (at least from what I've seen), but a few still do exist, and it's just like

We are not looking at the same character. My favorite character of persona 5 is an utter fucking bitch. Even in prince mode, he's passive aggressive as hell. Stop trying to make him all cutesy and sweet. You make me sick.

Underrated Sports Anime Recommendations!

In honor of the summer Olympics, I wanted to make a rec list for some underappreciated sports anime. Obviously we all know the popular stuff: Blue Lock, Kuroko, Hajime no Ippo, Ace of Diamond, Slam Dunk, Haikyuu, Free, Yuri On Ice, Yowamushi Pedal, Skate the Infinity etc. But there are lots of great sports anime out there that go completely unnoticed. And who knows, you might find a new sport to get into. Just FYI, these are all on the newer side, since most of the older sports anime I’ve seen are the popular ones.

I think a big reason that a lot of these have largely gone ignored is because they focus more on interpersonal drama between characters and what is going on in their home lives, as opposed to a bigger focus on the technicalities of the sport itself. Food for thought. Anyway, let's get started:

Stars Align (Hoshiai no Sora): Stars Align is about a boys high school soft tennis team (not to be confused with regular tennis) who are constantly getting out performed by their girls team. Desperate to get people to take the boys team seriously and get results, team captain Touma tries to get a new transfer student Maki Katsuragi to join. Maki eventually agrees ... .on the condition that Touma pays him and covers any club expenses. From there we discover the messy family drama going on in each boy’s life, and I just love all of them okay? They’re my precious angel babies, and sure I had some problems with the show’s pacing at the end, but I still love them and I want another season!!!! 😭

Oblivion Battery (Boukyaku Battery): There are a myriad of baseball animes out there, but this one made an impression on me. Catcher Kaname Kei and pitcher Kiyomine Haruka are a badass, ace duo who dominated the field and made a fearsome reputation for themselves all throughout middle school. They seemed to be completely unstoppable…until Kaname (the brains behind the operation) lost his memory, became a total goofball, and the two ended up going to a no name high school with no real baseball team. So of course, we end up getting a rag-tag team together full of ex-baseball players with dramatic backstories who all help train Kaname up again. I love Kaname and Haru’s friendship, and the cast was very well rounded, each with their own interesting attributes to add to the team.

Re: Main: If I had a nickel for every sports anime where the main character used to be an unstoppable badass until he lost his memory, I’d have two nickels, which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice. Yeah, it’s exactly the same as Oblivion Battery, but with water polo and the main character isn’t as much of a goofball. I liked the characters, but I wished we focused a little more on the water polo side of things, since it’s not exactly a dime a dozen sport for an anime.

Mou Ippon: A girls high school judo anime from 2023 that nobody fucking watched! When former judo enthusiast Michi Sonoda enters high school, she wants to put judo behind her so she can focus on finding a boyfriend and enjoying her school life. However, after Michi suffers a particularly humiliating defeat in a match against her the prodigy Towa Hiura, the two end up going to the same high school together. Naturally, Michi can’t just quit now that her rival is going to the same school! Cue the judo team shenanigans. This show is so down to earth and realistic. It’s 100% not a “cute girls doing cute things” anime where the girls are all blobs of moe that talk in annoying voices. They have different body types, different motivations, and different styles of combat. It didn’t blow me out of the water, but I liked it way more than I thought I would.

And speaking of different body types…

Hinomaru Sumo: That’s right, it’s a high school sumo wrestling anime. AND IT’S HYPE AS FUCK! You know how in Haikyuu, Hinata is short, and it’s a big deal because middle blockers are always tall? Well this is that multiplied by a thousand, because there’s a minimum weight to sumo wrestling, and our main character Hinomaru Ushio is definitely below it. But he’s not going to let that stop him from spreading his passion for sumo and becoming the High School Yokozuna, the strongest wrestler in high school tournaments…because becoming the Yokozuna is his only chance at going pro with his small stature. It’s impossible to watch this anime without feeling fired up!

Run With The Wind (Kaze ga Tsuyoku Fuiteiru): Kakeru Kurahara, a former track star, is looking for a place to live after losing his apartment deposit at a mahjong parlor. Luckily, he runs into Haiji Kiyose, a boy who goes to his university, who offers him a spot at his apartment. Little does Kakeru know, Haiji’s apartment is full of other university students who are all members of the Kansei University track team! The story follows the quietly devious Haiji as he tries to get the boys to become a nationally recognized team by running the Hakone Ekiden, an extremely long and grueling relay that none of the boys have ever trained for. This is one of my favorite sports anime ever. Don’t get it twisted, I hate running. I don’t like doing it, and I don’t like watching it in real life, but this anime had me in a chokehold. Animation? Amazing. Characters? A+. Music? Perfect. It’s hilarious. It’s relatable. It’s heartwarming. One of the absolute best sports anime out there.

Welcome To The Ballroom: It’s a motherfucking ballroom dancing anime, and if you didn’t think ballroom dancing could be hype as shit, THINK AGAIN! The animation is great, and I never realized how much actually goes into the world of ballroom dancing. There’s not really much more I can say. High school boy discovers the cutthroat world of competitive ballroom dance. Drama ensues. Just ignore everyone’s oddly long necks.

And speaking of dancing…

Dance Dance Danseur: Okay, this one isn’t quite in a sports competition setting, but I still consider it a sports anime. All his life, Junpei Murao has suppressed his interest in ballet, choosing to follow his father’s path for him in the more “manly” martial art of Jeet Kune Do instead. But when he realizes the girl he likes is a highly skilled ballerina, he hardly says no when she recruits him to train at her mom’s ballet studio. The show follows Junpei as he must balance these two worlds and become a ballet master while dealing with the divisive image of “masculinity.” My only real critique is that Junpei is kind of annoying, and I was actually much more invested in the other characters. There is a big message about the horrors of the competitive ballet world that I didn't think it would dive into.

Overtake: Another show from 2023 that was terribly overlooked. In this anime, we follow disgraced photographer Kouya Madoka, who falls in love with the fast paced world of Formula 4 racing after watching high schooler Asahina Haruka. However, Madoka failed to realize that Haruka’s racing crew, Komaki Motors, is drowning in bills and underfunded as hell. So of course when he finds out, Madoka takes it upon himself to support Komaki Motors himself and get Haruka a place on the podium. This was such a great drama! Each character is so fleshed out and completely relatable. Even the antagonists! Hell, especially the antagonists. There is a great balance of drama and humor that make this feel like it could easily be a Hollywood movie. The longer you watch, the more you root for Komaki Motors and want to see everyone succeed. Madoka is best boy!

And last but certainly not least…

Tsurune: In this anime, we follow Minato Narumiya, a former kyudo (Japanese martial art that involves archery) prodigy who wanted to quit the sport after an incident in a middle school tournament. However, after encountering a mysterious archer one day, Minato ends up joining his high school Kyudo team, despite his fear of failing at the sport again. It’s Free with archery, except there are also girls on the team! It has so many good themes about perseverance and found family and getting in your own head. And there is a massive amount of homosexual undertones. Not to mention it’s made by Kyoto Animation, so you know it’s one of the most beautifully animated shows I’ve ever seen.

I just wanted to add a few honorable mentions too…

Cheer Danshi: A university boys cheerleading anime. I had problems with the pacing, but I still had fun with it.

Ryman’s Club: An odd blend of office anime with a badminton anime. I really liked this, but it’s sort of half sports anime, half The Office. But it’s the only thing on this list that features actual working adults and not students.

Megalo Box: I don’t know if it counts as “underappreciated” but this was a fantastic show all around. It’s a gritty, down to earth, sort of sci-fi take on the fictional sport of Megalo Boxing (boxing with enhanced mechanical arms). 

Ping Pong the Animation: Look, I’m going to be honest. I didn’t really like this show very much, but apparently I’m the odd one out because this is an underground favorite of the sports anime community, and I’d be remiss if I didn’t include it. It’s one part ping pong, two parts character drama.

Birdie Wing: Golf Girls’ Story: I couldn’t leave this out of the list. It’s the wildest golf anime you could ever imagine. There are lesbians. There are snake ladies. There are underground golfing yakuza. No amount of explanation can do it justice. Grab an age appropriate beverage and watch it.

i just started rewatching soul eater for the first time since i was 15 and Stein is so much more interesting to me than he was then... what are ur soul eater thoughts chip if youre willing to share

i did not experience soul eater as a wee youth, the first time i watched (and then read it) was 4 years ago (give or take) so i do not have the beautifully tinged nostalgia for the series others might. i say this only bc it colours my thoughts of the series pretty well lmao.

the anime is alot better than the manga just by virture of bones' animation being incredible but also its like 40% less painfully fucking horny (though still is its shounen) and the way some of that plot goes in the second half is so fucking bad in the manga (though not all, but god). It's not like the anime gets rid of everything like that stupid ass argument black star has with maka still makes me want to murder him but ultimately i like the anime and its writing more. i think my minds canon is just a meld of parts i like from both lol.

ohkubo is also just on my top ten list of mangaka i need to actually kill like hes a solid #3 on the needs to die list. his designs and art improvement were fun to watch and i do love halloween world and his toony stuff, undeniably bangs, but you can really tell by the end where his transformation into horny moe artist came from. sometimes i see people shocked by this and soul eater not's existence and i have to think did we read the same fucking manga...??

sorry i needed to get my bitching out before talking about stein. i love stein. so many things wrong with him. he is 70% of the reason i got around to watching it and 95% of the reason i kept reading it. i think how expressive he is is alot of his charm, like he does alot of moe body language you might not expect of his type of chara.

hes #crazy and #madscientist and #edgy and #insaneasylum but also very silly and whimsical... kind of emblematic of the world of soul eater at large actually, this is also alot of the other characters appeal in this universe too (DEATH THE KID).

he's obsessive, hes empathetic, hes also sadistic, hes got a screw in his head, megane, fun with kids, perfect man. hes also got both an equal capacity for getting worse and better in him which can be fun to think about in either direction, and you've got characters that do influence him either way for that in the series. im also kind of remembering clicking the screw in his head is to help somewhat deal with his mental state actually, king of the disability aid...(?)

you can treat his character very seriously or lightheartedly, i think the writing in both versions maintains that balance well. It also makes everyone else who actually sticks around him somewhat deranged too (the fact he did surgery on spirit at school but spirit still interacts like pretty normally at work with him after meeting again. lmfao. THEY WENT DRINKING TOO) the fact he still calls spirit senpai also is so funny. its like 40% a dig at him but also 60% genuine. i hate gay people btw.

i like the thought that he was more stoic when he was younger but as he got older stopped trying to hide his eccentricities as much, and became more expressive lol. younger stein to me is a guy screaming in his head 247 but looking like 😐 while spirit stares at him trying to decipher what his eyelid twitching today means.

I understand having a type, and appreciate it. Some people just really like shorter hairstyles or more butch presenting or androgynous presenting people. I genuinely love a fantastic woman in suit combo.

But... Boy I have been vague'd about, complained at, etc for wanting to draw my favorite girls in high heels like Petri from Animal Crossing with her LUCIOUS eyes (gap moe...) or drawing Anabel in a pencil skirt or a dress or her hair being styled etc...

I don't. get it. I don't understand the sort of distaste for just liking femme styles. I'm not even bimbo-fying my favs, just expressing my love for how they want to be elegant.

I mean, for me, I grew up mega tomboy and hating girly things. My revenge on gender norms, patriarchal society, etc is by loving everything I thought and told was weak and vapid. That's my personal thoughts about it...!

"Please tell us about the other person's role in Bakuage Sentai Boonboomger."

Iuchi: Ishiro Meita, played by Yuki-kun, may look cool at first glance, but that's just him hiding his true character. Whenever I play the role of Taiya Hando, he's a character that makes me think, "Ishiro trusts Taiya." Going forward, we'll gradually get to see his cute side.

Hayama: It's true that Ishiro has a wide range of emotions (laughs). My impression of Taiya is that he values his intuition. So far, there aren't that many scenes in the show where the two of them talk together, so we don't know what led to their relationship of trusting each other, but I have a vague idea of what part of Taiya made Ishiro fall for him.

"Can you name some similarities between your roles and each other?"

Hayama: This isn't just me, as other cast members and Director Nakazawa Shojiro have also mentioned it, but Haruhi's personality is getting closer to Taiya's day after day. At first I thought I was the only one who thought that way, but when I told everyone, it seems like they think so too. I feel like he was chosen because he was the one meant to be Taiya.

Iuchi: That makes me happy (he's embarrassed). I didn't know you were talking about that.

Hayama: Taiya's a character who works quietly by himself, and Haruhi's the same way on set. During break time or when he's with the cast, he's always in a talkative mood, but before filming, he reads the script quietly by himself.

Iuchi: Now that you mention it, I think I may be like that. I like to spend time with others, but I'm also the type of person who values alone time. Yuki-kun is…

Hayama: (leaning towards him) I'm cool, just like Ishiro, right?

Iuchi: Uh, y-yeah (laughs). But, to tell you the truth, I feel that both Ishiro and Yuki-kun have a gap. They look cool at first glance, but in reality, they're cute…

Hayama: Isn't that just gap moe?! (*being attracted to the gap between one's appearance and personality)

Iuchi: That's right (laughs). In particular, I was amused by the fact that Yuki-kun recently won a figure and tote bag in a lottery for his favorite anime, and he's been carrying the tote bag with him all the time. He even takes it when moving from the waiting room, where you normally don't have to take anything with you. Seeing him do things like that, even though he's older, I think Yuki-kun is so cute that it's unfair.

"How did you become friends?"

Hayama: My hobbies are to go ramen hopping and going to saunas. When I mentioned this, Haruhi said, "I'm interested!" From there, we started going together for awhile.

Iuchi: Right! I was interested in both and wanted to get into them, but I had just moved to Tokyo and didn't know the city at all…Now, I've started to follow Yuki-kun's example, and made a photo folder with just ramen.

"What kind of ramen do you like?"

Hayama: Basically, I like everything, but I especially love Chinese soba with a soy sauce base. What kind of flavor do you like Haruhi?

Iuchi: Originally I was a soy sauce person, and liked thin, hard noodles, but recently, Yuki-kun took me to a restaurant similar to "Jiro" and I became addicted.

Hayama: It might've been a bad thing that I told you about it (laughs). The next time we have a day off from filming, us four guys, including Saito Ryu-kun and Soma Satoru-kun, should go together.

Iuchi: Yeah! It can be like alittle treat for us.

"To begin with, are you two outdoor or indoor people?"

Hayama: I'm a total indoor person. My hobbies are watching anime and reading manga.

Iuchi: We're the same. I also watch anime, movies, dramas, and have recently gotten into reading, I also play the guitar as a hobby.

Hayama: Well, if we were going to spend time together indoors, Haruhi should play the guitar as background music while I read manga. That way we can enjoy each other's hobbies.

Iuchi: Ah~ I see. But, if we were to spend time together, I'd like to go to Akihabara. I don't really go out if I'm alone, so I'd like to look around at the things we share a similar interest in.

Hayama: Alright! Come to think of it, it might be fun since we have so many things we like in common. The other three main cast members of Boonboomger are outdoor people, so it's good to have people like that by our side!

"What's something you'd like to ask each other?"

Iuchi: Ummm…when you were a student, were you smart?

Hayama: So suddenly?! why?

Iuchi: Yuki-kun, you seem like a smart guy. However, when I thought you were cool, you turned out to be surprisingly different.

Hayama: I see (laughs). I think my grade level was above half? It was alittle above the average score, but it wasn't really that high…wait, Haruhi! Are you trying to ruin my image with this interview?!

Iuchi: No, no! I'm not! (laughs).

Hayama: (laughs). This is going to be a serious question, but as I mentioned earlier, I feel that in a very short period of time, Haruhi has become more and more like Taiya, and that everyone views him as such. I read the script and make a certain plan before going to the set, but once I saw the way that Haruhi played Taiya after I got there, I changed my plans. When acting, do you do anything in addition to reading the script?

Iuchi: Hmmm…If I had to say so, I'd say that at random moments during my daily life, I think to myself, "Taiya would make a move like this right now." For example, I've always been the type of person who looks down while walking fast, but I think that Taiya would straighten his posture and walk slowly, so I've been trying to do that.

Hayama: Heh~. So, Taiya's character is taken from daily life?

Iuchi: Yeah. Otherwise, even though I'm playing the role of Taiya, I feel like I'd inadvertently come off as Iuchi Haruhi…As an extension of that, from the moment I read the script, I try to read it while keeping in mind that, "I'm Taiya Hando."

Hayama: Amazing. I'd love to learn from you!

He's very pious and devout and good natured, even kind of naïve as a first impression. He's an abbey gardener because he likes to help people, so he enjoys growing vegetables to feed people and herbs to make into medicines...he probably would have wanted to be a physician of sorts but he's not that good with Latin/languages. He could never really focus on learning despite being raised as an oblate, kind of air-headed and away with the fairies as a child I think haha.

He's very in enamoured with with nature and the natural world and in awe of what he views as God's creations. Very gentle even with insects and pests. Sometimes his emotional nature gets the better of the fact he's supposed to be reserved and tempered as a monk... He'll sometimes do inappropriate things like greeting people too excitably and informally, forgetting about whatever he's been tasked with because he's too distracted by some little critter he's found or just zoning out if the weather is nice. He doesn't really get along with the other brothers because of this juvenile temperament. He's not stupid though...he's just very whimsical and receptive to the many joyful things the world has to offer :^)

A throbbing head was the first thing Ryia felt when she woke up. Her vision, blurred at first, cleared up to reveal to her a room. Smooth pristine coal coloured walls surrounded her as well as the floor.

The room was decorated with medical looking devices some similar to human ones. Getting up into a sitting position, Ryia saw she was laid upon a metal slab covered with a some type of animal pelt. Head still throbbing, she decided to find a way out of the room. All the walls had no sign of a door or a way out but she did find a keypad that could open the door. The keys had weird symbols that she couldn't understand. However, when she stood near the keypad, the wall to the left shifted like a slide door.

Stunned, she stood for a moment before stepping out, making sure to keep her steps light, looking back in time to see the wall seamlessly slide back into place. She decided on which direction to go in given that she wanted to go home, so after a little innie miny moe game, she went left down the hall.

The hall curved, still the same coal coloured look, into an open area that looked like an alien kitchen and dining area. As she entered the area, she spotted, on one side of it, a large window that spanned the whole wall. She ran to it while still being aware of how much noise she made. She looked out noticing how high the unknown object was from the ground and she was still able to see her house.

She let out a quiet sigh in relief that she was still on Earth. Now that she thought about it, what if those creatures weren't re-

Soft clicking noises could be heard behind Ryia and she felt like she could pass out.

Slowly, she turned around, and came face to face with three of the things she saw a couple hours ago.

"Three? Where are the other two?" She thought. But before that thought could be answered, the biggest of the three growled at her so ferociously she could feel it in her bones. The sound made goosebumps crawl onto her skin and she shrunk into the window behind her. The smallest of the males went in front of his kin and gave a him a shove.

"Calm down Vikap, you're scaring her." An'tui said to him while trying to calm him. "I have no reason to care about her feelings. She is prey. Her smell invades my senses and it makes me want to rip out her head from her body. I want her out!" He growls out. "Calm 𝒎𝒆𝒊'𝒉𝒔𝒘𝒆𝒊. That is a decision for Ra'kar to make."

Ryia was stood- more like plastered against the window in fear but also in bewilderment as she watched the interaction. It seemed the smaller one was attempting to calm "Hulk" as she called him, but she wasn't sure if that was the case because it just seemed like they were arguing from her point of view.

Just then, the other two appeared. The one that grabbed her so hard she swears her mother turned in her grave. Now that it was light out, she could see the dread-like appendages from his head, from all their heads, however his were lengthy; from his lower back and just past his waist and were greying at the ends. And then there was the one that stares at her with an odd look. Like he is constantly observing her, not judging, just staring.

'Grey', she called him, walked with such confidence that it brought Ryia's already low self-esteem lower. She shrunk into herself; the degrading thoughts making themselves known in her head. 'Grey' began clicking at his brothers before looking at her with a gentle look.

A growled out voice could be heard when she heard him spoke," Ooman......you...are aboard...our...ship." The sentence was garbled almost like it was generated. "You collapsed due to your fall after I grabbed....you. I sincerely apologize for that." First of all, Ryia wasn't detered by anything that had just happened, she just wanted to know why she could understand them.

"Y-you..guys...can speak..English?" She whispered out. "No, T'edqah implanted a translator behind your ear," as he said that she felt behind both ears at the same time and behind her right ear, there was a small bump that stung just a little. She dropped her arms and felt rather small in that moment as they were all intensely looking at her, well except Hulk, he just kinda looked like he was glaring at her.

"Who is 𝑇𝑒-𝑔𝑘-𝑎?" Mr Grey gestured towards the leanest one of all five. However that word should be taken very lightly because even though he was lean for the obvious fact that he worked in medical, he was still a hunking mass built with broad shoulders, strong legs and not to mention a sculptured torso. At this point, Ryia realised that she was ogling because the room had gone silent with all of them watching her.

"Its 𝑇𝑒𝑑-𝑘𝑎. He is our health aide or as you humans call it, a medic." "And who are you?" She asked.

"Shit, I shouldn't have said that. It sounded rude." She thought. Hulk growled louder this time and stomped his way over to her and aggressively grabbed her throat adding enough pressure to almost deem her unconcious. Va'tha was alarmed as he was worried for the human's life but he didn't let it show in his expression. They all were alarmed but looked to Ra'kar for direction.

"Brother..." Va'tha's voice fades. "Vikap, let her go." Vikap's anger threatened to overweigh his loyalty to his leader. "But she spoke out of tone." At this point Ryia was shedding tears. The skin on her upper torso was sensitive as it is but her neck was very delicate as the skin there was thin from her abuse, so she was in the most pain she had been in since she left home.

"Just put her down." Ra'kar was stern this time and Vikap didn't want to anger him, so with the slightest hesitation, he let her go without a care. Ryia fell onto her kness before laying on her side gasping for air. Shockingly to the brothers, it didn't take long for her to recover as she was used to such behaviour. She got up to her feet and looked at Rakar.

"C-can I l-leave?" The question came out shakily and whispered but not in fear but because her throat was bruised. "We need to do a vital scan of-"

"I'll be fine. I'm a doctor."

".......ok. An'tui will show you out." The smallest one started walking and it took a minutes before she followed. She walked a couple steps behind him. Even if he was the smallest, Ryia couldn't help but ogle him. All 7' something inches of him. One itty bitty question bottled her though. She just hoped he wouldn't react as violently as Hulk.

Back in the dining room, Vikap felt better now that the human was gone. "Vikap, why do you always have to go crazy?" T'edqah asked with a shove. "I will do what I wanted to do to her to you." "And I will shove a needle up your-"

"Enough! Vikap, this has happened one to many times. Go and cool off." Vikap left without a sound leaving the two together.

"'Should I ask or not? I mean I think I should but I don't want to die. What if he does worse? And 'Grey' isn't here to intervene. What if the answer is obvious? I could just try and find out on my own. I mean-'

"Are you guys dating?" The words flew right out of her mouth. Silence filled the empty hall. An'tui stopped walking. 'Oh no.' He spun in shock and looked straight at her. Slowly, he shook his head. "....No."

"....hm." He turned again and continued walking. Soon enough, they arrived at a wall just like the one she came across before and saw how seamless the door was. An'tui opened the door using some gauntlet on his wrist and gestured towards the ramp once the door was raised.

"Uh....thanks." "Now from what i've seen in horror movies, never turn your back towards the enemy. But walking backwards is a bad omen. So I'll walk out the doorway forwards, spin back towards him, check for any signs of an attack then run...no sprint home." All this she thought as she slowly walked to the doorway. When she got there, she put it into action and did as thought.

Once she got to the back door she entered, locked the door and rested against it. Then she crawled to a window to peep out of it to see if they were watching and to her embarassment, they were.

"I need to get out of here." She thought. She made sure to keep away from any windows and made her way upstairs and into her room. The trek upstairs was fairly easy. She ran into her bedroom and got her phone out. There was only one person she could talk to in the moment to fetch her and that was Louis. She wouldn't consider him as her best friend as she wasn't close to people like that and when she was close to someone, they hurt her. Crouched and on her knees in front of her bed, she rung him up and as always, he answered on her third attempt of trying to reach him.

"Ryia! Baby! How are you? It's been a while. I've been waiting for your call. It's like you forget about me when you leave work. How's life? Any hotties wanna party? Any daddies wanna smashie. Two bodies doing the naughty-"

"Shut up will you?", she whisper yelled. "Sorry. I'm kinda sorta in a situation right now and I would like it if you would get over her right now. I need a ride." She rushed out.

"Well excuse you honey, if you forgot, I'm kinda uhm....a DOCTOR. I got people to help here. You do know that you can still drive your OWN car to the store. You're not handicapped just because you're on your period."

"Firstly, ewww. Secondly this situation is serious. I don't know how to tell you this but," as she says this she doesn't notice An'tui approaching from behind her silently and appearing in her doorway. "There are aliens in my backyard."

"Are you ok? Are you high? Did you hit your head really hard? Cause like I'm confused."

"Please just get here." She adds on.

"I'll see later, Ryia. BAAYYE."

"Did I mention they're hot...?"

"....I'll be right there." He ends the call abruptly before she can even say bye.

A hefty sigh of relief leaves a lips as she sat down fully with her leg supporting her arm.

'Ok now I need to-"AAAHHHH!" Her screech was so high pitched, it startled the male into a defensive stance. She reached for her throw pillows and flung them with all her might at him which caused him to straighten back up but they had no effect on his rock solid muscled body. "What are you doing here! Get out! Get out!"

An'tui could sense the stress of the female and purred lowly. "Calm down. I followed you to keep an eye on you."

"Why!" At this point she was slowly hyperventilating and couldn't breathe properly. An'tui saw this and approached her with slow and measured steps. "Calm down. My scans show that you overbreathing also know as hyperventilating. Listen to me. Breathe in, breathe out."

Ryia didn't know why but for some reason she listened and soon enough her breathing had returned to normal.

"Why should you be keeping an eye on me? I don't have anything you guys need or want and I didn't steal anything."

"You may have not done anything but you jave seen us and know we exist. We cannot risk you telling anyone about us and this was the better choice."

"W-what was the other choice?"

"To kill you."

She took a tentative step backwards, you know just in case, with a scared look on her face.

"I'm sure t-that was Hulk's idea."

"What is a Hulk?"

"Nevermind-"

The conversation was interrupted by loud honking from outside. An'tui's head snapped towards the window whilst a set of blades extended from his wrist. The 2 foot blades were sharpened to perfection and glistened in the light of the room.

"Stay here. There is a threat outside that needs to be terminated."

He turned on his heels and headed for the door. Ryia realized that it was her crazy friend and followed behind him.

"Wait! Wait! He's not a threat! He's just a friend! An accomplice! A companion!"

Unsung Heroes; Unspoken Lines: Issue #2

Good morning, all, and welcome to another discussion session for all of the unsung heroes of "The Bad Batch", as well as the many plot directions that never quite made it to the small screen. As we did in our first thread, please make good use out of the comments and reblogs, as we kinda won't be able to come up with any good responses without them.

And now, let's get straight into it and put on our thinking caps...

So, everybody, it’s kind of like this…

…I was tossing a few ideas for the next discussion around in my head late last week, and of course, specifically from the first season. Two examples of these had been, at least at the time, how did the Mantell Mix vendor reflect the average citizen’s response to the shiny new Imperial regime; or else did toothpick usage indicate evil behavior from major and minor characters alike. Totally random, somewhat vague thoughts to be expounded upon...and also kind of bad.

However.

It wasn’t until I read some leftover comments from around the last discussion thread, specifically from @megmca, that I was reminded of a missing key aspect of a lost canon character, as well as one whose “death” a certain amount of fans may still be hurting over, myself included. Something that just so happens to perfectly fit this latest 'Tech Tuesday', even if it's short and sweet.

Something like...Tech himself just happening to enjoy audio and video recordings as a hobby.

In other words, even if the show carrying their squad nickname never brought it up, or stranger still, left it back in the final season of The Clone Wars…Tech DID, in fact, record everything, a fact stated to be a hobby of his during the arc involving Echo, another key character in future episodes.

And boy oh boy, this is a once-cancelled possibility that now leads us straight into our next discussion--What If?

What if he recorded other things besides various examples of animal sounds, and if so, how effective would they have been in the future?

What if he could also record human/humanoid voices, and use them to generate deepfakes that could get the squad through even the toughest of Imperial checkpoints?

And third...what if a collection of past footage could crack open all the unsolved mysteries from the complete series, be it the last procedures on Kamino or else the secret files from Tantiss? Could at least one terrifying event been avoided, if not several...?

I hope that this can, at least, begin to get everyone else's thoughts out on the matter...and if so, please answer our latest Question Of The Week in either the comments or reblogs:

I've been thinking about the Mark Bearer's favourite/go-to drinks.

For some reason, Hiroo feels like the type whose favourite drink is beer. And Ai probably has an overly complicated drink order that only she thinks is enjoyable. Mashita's favourite would be black coffee and Daimon drinks mainly energy drinks... Moe seems the type to drink whatever's popular during the season. Shou probably sticks with any sort of hydrating drink. I think Christie likes mineral or fruit-flavoured waters, and Tsukasa just drinks plain water. Yasuoka would drink a lot of tea... and Banshee drinks whatever he can find that's clean. I'm not sure about Eita or Suzu... maybe those popular anime-themed drinks for Eita and green tea for Suzu?

I'm sleepdrunk and thinking about the very specific combination of traits the version of me that came before the one I resurrected had, and how unsurprising it is that the resulting gap moe created romantic appeal. It wasn't just the family money or the youthful looks or the racist, tuberculosis-derived beauty standards that privilege my thin and pale ass.

That teenage version of me was a notorious edgelord, but not in the "I'm going to be intentionally offensive to troll for outrage" kind of way. It was more in the "uninterested in others and has little regard for authority figures or common religious/cultural norms" kind of way, with plenty of tangible effortless competence backing it up and a general sense of apathy. I guess I'm still kind of like this but more polite and open, and probably much less scary.

It's the type of character that reads as a very independent "bad boy" (not actually a boy but they didn't know that) with hints of a tragic backstory and a more sensitive side, especially towards animals. It was the type of character the yaoi people probably fantasize Sasuke to be. I don't know, I didn't even finish/remember much about Naruto, much less read any fanfic or anything. It's just the impression I get from how some people seem to talk about it.

But I notice that this sort of character whose appeal comes from the gap between their cool and distant first impression and their more tender interior is not at all uncommon as a romantic option in media, especially if they are sad and suffer a lot and become extremely devoted to those they do form bonds with despite their usual lack of interest in doing that.

Falling for the red herring

I’ve mentioned this a time or two on this blog, but a pretty interesting piece of Rhea discourse from the anti-Edelgard community is this notion that the localization ruined Rhea’s image by having Cherami Leigh portray her in an overly stoic manner, preventing her from being seen as cute as she evidently can be in the original Japanese dub. I’m not going to argue on that point: I don’t play with Japanese vocals on and I’ve learned long ago never to take Edelgard’s detractors at their word without fact checking them.

It is ironic, however, that these same types tend to scorn Edelgard for being “gap moe” for the sake of selling Heroes alts and paraphernalia featuring her. But then again, if Edelgard’s detractors didn’t have double standards they wouldn’t have any standards at all.

What I am here to discuss today is this recurring trend from some Rhea fans to try and portray her as more motherly than she actually behaves in either Three Houses or Three Hopes. A particularly good example is the fixation of Cyril as being something of a surrogate son for her. Let’s be frank: nothing in Houses or Hopes supports this notion. She took Cyril in and rescued him from slavery, but that makes him just one of many urchins that she’s provided shelter for. Aside from that she pays him no particular notice over anyone else. A far cry from the fandom notion that she looks after him constantly. Another good example is crediting her for all of the stray cats and dogs in the monastery - I’ve seen her described as a secret lover of animals who plays with them when nobody’s looking.

Now this interpretation of her isn’t entirely without merit: Three Hopes mentions in a rather off-hand way in one of the Azure Gleam supports (I want to say one of Catherine’s but I can’t recall and the supports don’t appear to have ever been posted online in a script format) that Rhea often plays with orphans, and though nothing proves this otherwise, it’s still a pretty impressive case of telling and not showing because we never see anything to support it aside from one character’s say-so.

So why do these particular fans do this? It’s quite simple: it’s because that’s how Rhea’s initially portrayed. When we first meet her, she’s serene, she’s kind, she’s accepting, and she’s certainly got a... motherly figure, as fanart so loves to remind us :p

However, this is a red herring.

As White Clouds continues, the cracks begin to show in her facade. She’s defensive, secretive, prone to deception without need, quick to judge, and swift in anger. At the very end of Silver Snow’s story, we learn the truth about her: far apart from being a kind motherly figure to those under her wing, Rhea lost her own mother to tragedy at what can be presumed to be a young age, and the slaughter of her kin left her trapped in that time of her life ever since. Rhea is, in many ways, a youth in an adult’s body who just wants her own mother back so that her many self-imposed burdens and responsibilities can be lifted from her shoulders. It’s why she struggles to socialize with others, why she shows affection through showering praise and the occasional gift upon the people she likes, and why she struggles accepting the good advice of others. She understands to some extent that she hasn’t led Fodlan in the direction it needs to go and yet she refuses to face her own failures and fix them herself.

This desire to portray Rhea as cuter and more motherly is simply the earnest desire of some of her fans to have her live up to the mask she first presents, and which is ultimately ripped from her face. It’s unfortunate then that that’s not the Rhea that actually exists.

Contrast this with Edelgard (because I was always going to go there :p) and you see her acting like a mother hen to her fellow students. She treats Lysithea like a little sister she needs to look after, she empathizes with Bernie, she expresses concern over Caspar’s future and opportunities, she scolds and sets straight Ferdinand, she urges Byleth to ponder on their own the mysteries surrounding them and the hidden nature of Fodlan rather than telling them what to think, and she keeps on Linhardt to do his work and focus on his future (Linhardt even calls her out on acting like an overbearing mother!) It simply appears to be in Edelgard’s nature to stubbornly care for others. She’s not too unlike Velvet Crowe (who is also compared to being an occasionally overbearing mother by those around her) in this way. This part of her never goes away - it only becomes stronger as time goes on.

It’s ironic then, that Edelgard’s detractors so often speak of her like she’s an ignorant child that needs to leave the room and let the adults - always Rhea, Dimitri, and Claude - do the real work of fixing Fodlan.

Projection is ever the signature style of people who dislike her, I’ve found.
