it’s wild to me that like every modern adaptation of Sherlock Holmes (and by modern I mean “made recently” not “set in modern times”) is like Hell Bent on coming up with a Reason™️ that Watson stays with Holmes and trots around with him on adventures all the time despite the inconvenience and the danger and all, and so it’s like “oh, Watson’s a gambling addict, he loves uncertainty and mystery” or “oh, Watson’s an adrenaline junkie, he gets off on being constantly in danger from criminals” or even like “Watson’s atoning for sins of the past of BEING IN THE WAR by solving crimes with Holmes now” or WHATEVER. And it’s like, girl, maybe he’s just in love! Did you think of that?? Maybe he’s got a crush and it’s making him do stupid things. Maybe he’s just got bad taste and his type is guys who don’t know how to refold newspapers properly but can identify different types of cigar ash by sight, smell, and taste. And wrote a monograph on the subject. Maybe he’s down bad is all. I mean, Keep is simple, stupid!!!

#this whole problem also requires the extra step of making Holmes into someone who’s like actively cruel and terrible to Watson specifically #which like he also isn’t in canon at all #he’d probably be an inconvenient roommate that not everyone would personally want to put up with #but he’s not like endangering Watson all the time and interfering in his affairs constantly #The way writers always adapt him doing #so like it’s a problem they’re inventing and then writing a silly solution for #and no one better come for me for ‘bad taste’ I was trying to be funny and also Holmes is insane #the fact that Watson took one look at him and his bonkers lifestyle and pledged his life to him is just proof that Watson is also insane #in the when harry met Sally way of ‘thank god these two found each other and spared the rest of us the trouble’#anyway this is all part and parcel with the way writers who adapt Holmes don’t understand Watson #and even people who LIKE Holmes and get his deal still rarely get what makes Watson great #BUT that’s an essay for a different time and I won’t get into it now #sherlock holmes #john watson #doctor watson #acd #acd canon #tagging this as canon is sooo silly sorry but I don’t know what else to put #also worth noting that like the idea of working with Holmes as this chronically super dangerous thing is also silly #Like a solid percentage of their cases are solved from the comfort of baker street #there’s definitely some dangerous cases (‘bring your revolver’ is a meme for a reason after all) but like not enough of them #that you can make a strong case for John Watson: Adrenaline Junkie™️#except that modern writers make every case life or death high stakes serious so like….thats where it comes from #ANYWAY

Maglor who stayed in Middle Earth all the way through till present day, or close to it, and then for whatever reason finally ends up going back to Valinor, but he has enthusiastically picked up all the modern day curses and slang and sometimes when he talks he's so completely incomprehensible to his family that they're not sure if they want to cry or hit him

aka: Maglor comes back to Valinor and instead of getting a traumatized son/brother back like the expected, they find that Maglor did in fact get over his shit eventually but was just having a blast becoming an agent of chaos and now he's brought all that back with him <3

#atlanta rambles #Maglor #I just had a vision pop in my head of Maglor going *out of his way* to be as annoying as possible #to all of his brothers #no one is safe #Fingon thinks it's fucking hilarious #doesn't understand anything Maglor is talking about but he picks up the curses with enthusiasm #the cursing spreads and you have elves saying “jesus fucking christ” without even the slightest comprehension of who they're referring to #Maglor learned piglatin at one point from some band of children #and spends a solid week convincing his father that there was in fact a country that spoke this language #he drops random history lore all the time #and Finarfin ends up having the concept of democracy and elections explained to him and drops everything #to make it happen #he'd expected the breaking of the world to happen already and he is SICK of being king #he thinks of the most dramatic modern inventions he can and then woefully tells his father #that oh it's just not possible to make it in Aman #no no it's not that he's bad at his craft it's just *impossible* to make #and then he sits back and enjoys the chaos #Maedhros has never been so happy to have a brother back while also simultaneously wishing he would go the fuck back to where he came from #he makes a point about telling Galadriel and Aredhel about the feminist movement #his work there is done #Fingolfin really feels he should be doing something about all this but has no idea what #Maglor looks at him one day and kind of mock thoughtfully goes hmmm #you know I wonder if they based David & Goliath off your disastrous fight and just felt bad for you so they changed the ending #and then he refuses to elaborate on any it #Maglor is a horrible goose #and he is having a FANTASTIC time

I’m still holdin’ out for Irene Adler for my main Sherlock, Amelia… but… that isn’t stopping me from making alternate Sherlock’s for all these fine options I’ve been given. Especially considering the different flavors of autism gremlins I can make to compliment each option so differently.

Hate to say I have a preference for Lestrade and H as guys but— I do. 😔 idk. Maybe it’s just the way my biromantic brain is wired. But both these gentlemen are SO FINE.

So I will probably only ever draw them as dudes…

Sadly the only reason I may not be able to actually romance Adler with my main is… I’m playing her as more of a persona and I am incredibly ace… but— like— Irene tho— idk. Things to consider.

I love the idea of Machete healing some unresolved stuff about himself because he realizes the things he resented about himself when he was younger are traits that Ear has but because he loves Ear it helps him to realize those traits aren't inherently unlovable. Do you think Machete or Vasco would be helicopter parents?

#yes I absolutely agree #parenthood would be something that could prompt him to re-evaluate and process his self-image in a constructive way #it's common and ordinary thing for people to experience but it also enables tremendous character growth #and I like the idea of someone like him #who doesn't come across as family oriented person and doesn't see himself as fit to raise a child #subverting expectations and doing really solid job as a parent #also in the original setting his personal life is kind of devoid of living things if that makes sense #he has his books and papers and collections of commissioned art but he doesn't cultivate anything that grows #that's why it'd be nice if in the modern au they had something to take care of #a pet or even some cherished houseplants would be a good start if they don't want to commit to an entire Ear #answered #anonymous #they would actively try to avoid acting too much like helicopter parents but the results would vary #modern au #kid named Ear
