ok so the part that i’ve worked on is set in high school

Pulitzer is the principal of the high school all of the manhattan newsies (+ Sarah, Kath, Bill, and Darcy)

hes not a great principal (shocking, i know)

Miss Medda is the theatre teacher and owns a small theatre outside of the school where the newsies like to hang out

a school strike was started by Jack because of some jerkiness from Pulitzer

the other main conflict of this au is that both Jack and Crutchie have absolutely horrible awful foster homes

Miss Medda’s gonna adopt them

most other things start creeping into i’m gonna be super specific about certain newsies and that’s gonna get really long and rambley lol

davey is the guy who’s been a dungeon master since he was 13. he owns all of the d&d books and has subscriptions to d&d beyond and homebrews incredible campaigns for his friends and makes lore for his NPCs and owns at least 30 sets of dice. d&d is his special interest and he loves using his words to create worlds beyond imagination.

jack is the guy who only starts playing d&d because his boyfriend is a dungeon master. he joins a campaign halfway through the semester and he’s way in over his head but after one 3-hour session he’s hooked. he yaps to davey about his character ideas and draws everyone’s characters because he can see them so Vividly in his head. he asks really specific questions about the settings and the maps and he loves all of the lore that davey spins. he doesn’t expect to be a nerd but by god he is and it’s all davey’s fault

I have mixed feelings on writing modern aus because on one hand I feel like a lot of nuance and characterization relies on historical context but on the other hand, I wanna see Jack wear red converse everyday and Bumlets play Prince Eric in a junior/high school production of The Little Mermaid ya know? This applies only to my writing though. You guys are doing great

jack kelly is homeless he is an orphan he is living in absolute poverty, i am holding you by the shoulders — even in modern aus he would Still Be Poor.

he would probably be a high school dropout. he’d probably have absolutely terrible grades when he did go to school, but his attendance is shit anyway because he’s had to work since he was fourteen. he drops out as soon as he can, or he’s kicked out of school — given up on — to work More, to scrape together minimum wage paychecks so he can survive. he’s so hungry and so tired, so worn down by everything in his life, but survival is the only option for someone in his circumstances.

he has no family to support him, no parents to get money off of or even call just to cry when it’s all too much. he has no money behind him. he has nothing else to do but survive. he clings to his friends as much as he can, but they’re all in similar situations. all drowning together.

jack kelly would not be a popular high school jock with a winning smile and a letterman jacket. he couldn’t afford a letterman jacket, couldn’t afford to play sports in the first place. he wouldn’t go to college! he can’t afford it!! he can’t afford anything! debt scares him shitless and follows him wherever he goes — owing a month or two’s rent is bad enough, the idea of student loans is laughable.

he lives his life in survival mode. college, sports, hobbies — it’s all a million miles away. jack scrapes for rent and food. he loves with all his heart and works himself sick. he’s Tired. he fantasises about maybe getting his GED some day.

he’s never going to college.

jack will say something with utter confidence that is true for him because of the terrible experiences he had as a child and because so many of his friends also had terrible childhoods a lot of the time it goes unchallenged. and then he'll say it to davey or katherine and they'll be like i don't know how to tell you this but it was absolutely not normal or okay that you learned to use a stove at five years old because you could reach the microwave and your father left you home alone for six days. and jack is like huh. when you phrase it like that it sounds worse than it was. and they're like no jacky darling. it was that bad.

gay and ace (he’ll fight you if you i infantilize him and so will i)

uses forearm crutches as opposed to one crutch because i thought thatd be easier for him (disabled people correct me if i’m wrong)

currently in a really bad foster home but is gonna get adopted by Miss Medda at some point so he’ll be ok

bad at math but good at english

in choir and has gotten a couple solos

in detention a lot but not as much as Jack or Race

dating Race, crutchtrack forever

insane upper body strength and people are always surprised

Miss Medda helped him get his first binder but he’s very bad about binder safety and forgets to take it off

physically incapable of not petting every animal he comes across and has a job at a local animal shelter

has broken peoples kneecaps with his crutches (no seriously, he sent Morris Delancey to the hospital by whacking him so hard after Morris made a jerk comment)

has two last names because her parents are divorced and her dad wouldn’t let her get rid of his last name so she jus added her mom’s

My fave thing in newsies fan fiction is where Jack thinks that because of the way David talks or dresses that his family is much more well off and in the back of his head he’s wary and judged David a bit for that but then one way or another he goes to David’s house and sees that they clearly both grew up with families that struggled for money and David just got good at hiding that because of judgement from his peers
