Okay but speaking of modern AU Les Amis—

We can all agree that joly&bossuet&R would hold the BEST karaoke nights, right?

no bc Eponine and R are definitely singing “you belong with me” at the top of their lungs

Bossuet and Joly would re-enact whole musicals (just the two of them at first, R is occupied recording them, Courf and Bahorel join later.) trying to rap guns and ships as fast as humanly possible.

Jehan would spend days in advance to prepare the most sappy, cheesiest love songs ever created, Only for them to be in Italian, So he’s the only one singing,

mabye Combeferre sings along with him (courf soon follows after, blabbering into the mic, trying to follow the rhythm, not knowing a single word in Italian)

(Jehan only actually chooses sappy-Italian songs or mitski. No inbetween)

Also Enjolras refuses to show up/partecipate,

He says he’s busy, but everyone knows he only does this because he’s tone deaf.

i dont remember if i kept this in my maximalist kpop post or not but i had wrote a whole section about how the concept of superm as a group is maximalism and everything that they did is probably the purest form of kpop performance spectacle that we've seen in the last several years. kpop has always been about taking random americanisms and extrapolating them into a weird and altogether new conglomorate of cultural hybrid bizarreness and superm ramps that up to 100 (pun intended). the disparate visual western touchstones (cars/motorsports, cowboys, big tech + machines, superheros, military, collegiate gear) all crammed together with choreo that goes extremely hard for no reason, stupid and cringe (complimentary) english lyrics, completely over the top studio set pieces, and all done by a group that's literally assembled from defining groups of the last three generations, from the company that pioneered the industry? how can it be anything except the pinnacle of modern kpop? people can make the arguments all they want that sm was attempting to pander to the west in the vein of bts, but what those people miss is that superm was never totally westernized in the way that bts has been in their recent endeavours. superm maintains a sense of koreanness throughout not only their music (promoting i can't stand the rain on the ellen show along with jopping, none of their title songs being fully in english) but also visually with tiger inside, which has become their most popular song second to jopping. sm was very careful not to sacrifice the threads of what makes kpop korean with superm, and that's what makes everything about what they were doing work.

sometimes growing up means gradually distancing yourself from mainstream music to such a degree that you don't even realize you're "weird" til ur in a room full of pop punk emo stans and it suddenly dawns on u that they're all acting like preps and probably have been this whole time and ur the only person there in clownish makeup and why are so many people dressed like fast fashion mannequins or instagram models and u don't even recognize half the music that's playing cause it all just blurs together into a bland middle school dance soundtrack, or maybe car radio top 40 circa middle school, but the overpriced merch is all like "proud elder emo :-)" in a smooth, strangely 2020, aesthetic font on fake tie dye t-shirts and oh my fucking god gerard way was right about the t-shirts you sell. and bert mccracken was right about eating ass fwiw. and suicidal tendencies wasn't on the setlist but they were right about that pepsi.
