The Shadowhunter Chronicles Fandom Survey

Hey squad, I made a survey! (Link here). It's got a bunch of different categories related to TSC (best series, best ship, best villain, etc), and allows ranked choice voting so you can say what your favorites and least favorites are in each category.

This doesn't serve an official purpose, I just have a lot of vague impressions about what is and isn't popular in this fandom and wanna see if it matches up with what people actually think. I'll publish the data after a little while, and if you'd help in the meantime by filling it out and reblogging this post so more people see it, I'd be most appreciative! I really want to get this around to every corner of the fandom if possible, since we've got so many different things going on.

Also, for the ship questions, I only included canon endgame ships (with the exception of Herongraystairs, because it's basically canon and I really wanna see how Wessa vs Jessa vs Herongraystairs fair in the hearts of the people; and Gracetopher, because they're canonically each other's Most Special Guy and it's not like they have other endgames).

If enough people are interested, then I might make a bunch of polls that are more series specific and include stuff with less basis in canon (like a TMI quiz that lets you choose between Clace and Jimon and Clizzy). So sound off if that's something you wanna see.

Coming in November 2024

For the past four years, I have spent November publishing one story from different fandoms on a daily basis over at archiveofourown.org under my pen name "Sehin" from the 1st to the 30th. The first time was simply whatever I came up with on the day and no editing whatsoever. Since then, I've been planning ahead of time and last year I spent October writing all of them. I have continued that trend for this year too and am rather excited with the stories I have set up this year.

The stories range from fluff to AUs to canon compliant to my personal headcanons to OC inserts to the Explicit Smut I know quite a few people enjoy. What I most enjoy are any comments people make and I love sharing stuff with others. Heck, those encourage me more to write more than anything else and even change some of what I've been writing. I can only edit so much personally despite having a Cert IV in Professional Writing and Editing myself and had studied most of the Diploma before life sent me in another direction.

As to this years chosen stories, well here is what is coming each day this year (at least as of October 10th 2024 and this may change but I'll just add to this post in advance):

Also, I never write Explicit or Mature Star Wars stories, unless it involves Luke Skywalker and Mara Jade since I favour that pairing like crazy.

matthew and mary crawley:

They spend multiple seasons full of tension to get their happy ever after. There are so many tropes used between these two. They finally get their shit together and get married, and then have a beautiful child together. Matthew is so happy about his child being born that he doesn't pay attention to the road and fucking DIES IN A CAR CRASH. And that's how their story ends. It makes me so livid every time I think about it lol they really killed him off like that right after and I mean RIGHT AFTER his child is born. It's so foul and every man that they set Mary up with after that doesn't feel nearly the same

maka albarn and soul evans:

Throughout the series, they have a deep friendship with each other which is consistently extremely important to the story's narrative. In order for them to be able to fight, they must get along and resonate with each other, and due to the mechanics of their world, fighting independently of each other is extremely difficult. In multiple instances, they are shown to be willing to put themselves in harm's way to extreme degrees to keep each other safe. They are even shown to live together. They are The Singular Straight Ship I have ever shipped and I love them. Also they are really cool and Soul can turn into an awesome scythe weapon that like only Maka can wield. And they fight really awesomely together.

grace blackthorn and christopher lightwood:

Okay so basically in Shadowhunters there was this family tree, and on it it stated that Christopher and Grace got married and had a kid. And in the book series they were just good friends. Cassandra Clare (the author) has said it’s inaccurate. But like cmon you said they were going to get married 😭😭

kipo oak and benson mekler:

It only lasts a few episodes, but this is a very clear INTENTIONAL straight bait from the writers, as it's a female main character with a male major supporting character, and Benson even takes Kipo to a carnival, which Kipo interprets as a date, until she confesses attraction to him, where he tells her he's gay and just wants to be friends.

cali and flynn:

It starts off as a one-sided crush on Flynn’s side, and later becomes mutual when Cali develops feelings for him in the Skylanders IDW spin-off comics, their romantic tension lasts for most of the franchise (five games, a chapter of a spin-off comic, and a few bits and pieces in the spin-off books and mobile games), so far they’ve never gotten together as the franchise is currently still in hiatus mode (says this while on extreme copium) I think we need to appreciate the tropes in Calynn: Opposites Attract, Tough Girl x Himbo, Smart x Dumb, “You’re stupid, I like that in a man” vibes all over this ship! Seven year old me didn’t see Cali calling Flynn her guy in the sky whilst Flynn looked at her with heart eyes to lose to some other pairing!

leo's history is somewhat hazy. he recalls snippets before his initial shift ( c.2003 ). what's still ingrained in him is that he was born on a sheep farm in the carpathian mountains, he and his 11 other siblings were raised primarily by his grandmother. as both his grandfather and father spent the days tending the farm and animals. his grandmother died suddenly. his grandfather never recovered. his father left one day and never came back.

he can't remember what happened to his siblings. they just weren't there anymore. his first shift was painful beyond measure. he was all alone, caged underground. having been captured ( actually sold into captivity ) to be used as muscle to detour anyone with ill intent. he was sold several times over because it was difficult to reign him in. he barely knew of his humanity by the time 2011 rolls around.

a supernatural bar on the outskirts of a town. there had been rumors that a rogue wolf was lingering nearby ( said rogue being leo ). up until that point, his experiences with alphas were not the best. wolves in general, given most of his formative years, are difficult for him to trust.

in walks, logan stark. their first few encounters would go as you'd normally expect. lots of growling, snarling and generally unpleasant. but it didn't detour logan. it was almost 9 months worth of not giving up. there was something different about this one.

it's what makes the beta both formidable and protective in that same instance. you do not cross his alpha, that's the whole of it. he'll fight for him, with him, die for him and kill. lay absolute waste. he really sees red when his alpha is harmed ( a coping mechanism for his inner fears ).

logan was patient. despite how troublesome his beta proved to be. it wasn't smooth sailing but everything eventually settled. there's been a few instances since, though they're very rare. logan not giving up on leo through all this is what made the bond easy to accept.

it's a bond that's only strengthened as the years pass.

I do like to kind of "roleplay" as my kintypes sometimes. I'm psychological kin but I do kind of lean into my kintypes as a coping mechanism. But I do also expierence mental shifts which may cause me to present differently. So essentially: sometimes I'm talking like that on purpose sometimes I'm not.

To get into specifics, I am a Psychological alterhuman. All of my identities are derived from "brain weird".

I am the host of a system(?) we are definitely plural, and there is an inner world I can't access. I don't know too much about us beyond that, though. If we are close you can ask for a list of who we have in here and their boundaries. They can sometimes come co-con but can't front.

Re: The Shadowhunter non-warrior job question

So, since the Shadowhunters were basically designed to be perfect warriors™, I'm assuming they're all abled-bodied? Unless there are physically disabled Shadowhunters that have adapted fighting techniques (that would be cool)

But, what about Shadowhunters that become injured and then disabled? I know it depends on the disability itself, but it would drastically change fighting.

I guess I'm asking this because disability rep is important to me, and I was curious if there is any.

Also Shadowhunters remind me a lot of how clans work in Warrior Cats.

Well, honestly I don't know/remember if Shadowhunters can be born with physical disabilities, I don't remember a character (that we know of) who was born with one. I mean, theoretically they could, because they are part human, but I don't know about any 😅 I don't know if the Codex says something about that topic, I haven't read it completely

But yeah, there's a case of a physical disability caused during a battle on the books. Henry Fairchild/Branwell (I'm assuming you watched the show or the movie, so you know that Clary is a Farchild, well Henry is an ancestor of hers) was injured on his back during a battle and lost the sensation on his legs, in The Infernal Devices trilogy.

At twenty-two years old, Henry was working on developing his hypothetical transportation portal. Magnus Bane was impressed by his inventions and offered to help him. Through Magnus's magic and warlock runes, they were able to make the Portal work in time for their trip to Cadair Idris in Wales.

Once at Cadair Idris, the small group was faced with an army of demonic automatons. When Henry tried to examine one that was motionless by touching the box that contained the demon energies in it, the clockwork creature seemingly activated and severely injured Henry. Henry almost died, though Magnus saved him with magic but, like the Silent Brothers, was unable to bring back the lost sensation to his legs.

Surprisingly, Henry took his paralysis fairly well. He merely met the news with his usual fortitude. Henry was instead driven to design and build himself a wheelchair with self-propelling wheels and other accouterments that would allow him to ascend and descend the stairs to the Institute's basement, particularly to his inventions.

And Jem Carstairs (from The Infernal Devices trilogy too) had a Cane during his books, because he was sick (he was not born sick though), so he used a cane as a walking stick in case he needed it for support but it also served as his weapon, with a blade hidden in it.

Like I said, Shadowhunters' purpose in life is to protect the world of the demons, it's their nature, so taking Jem and Henry as a reference, and taking into consideration that pregnant Shadowhunters keep going into missions using a special/different fighting gear until they are too far along, I think it's safe to say that Shadowhunters would keep going to battle, as long as their injury allows them to keep fighting, as you say, with a different technique or maybe a special weapon. It would depent on the level of mobility they have I guess (:
