The man had fallen on his back, and on his back was his child. Whomp, and the child was crushed into ground meat, splattering blood for dozens of meters. The man's neck was broken, his eyes bulging out of his skull. Around his twisted neck there dangled a charm with the words "Xianle" embroidered in golden thread -- a protection charm from the Temple of the Crown Prince.
Right before he had started to climb, the man and his wife both clutched that protection charm in their hands and silently prayed for the blessings of His Highness the Crown Prince; Xie Lian had heard their voices and rushed over. But he was not a hero from the legends written in books. He couldn't appear right before the executioner dropped the axe every single time, to save lives menaced by the blade.
The woman didn't even have the courage to flip her husband's dead body to check on the condition of her son. She covered her face and screamed, and without looking, she made a crazed dash forward to bash her head into the wall. Crack, and she dropped on the spot, her body limp.

Danmei and Baihe C Novels and Manhua Officially Licensed in English
Things are getting licensed fast enough that keeping a list like this up-to-date is basically impossible, but I saw someone asking in the tags so I figured I'd try. All titles are danmei unless otherwise noted (very little baihe is licensed so far). I've included Chinese titles, but sometimes publishers change the original titles so much that I can't track them down, apologies. I've hit the link limit on this post so I've had to remove NovelUpdate links, but they're still in the version of this post on Wordpress. Note that Taiwanese titles are not included on this list.
This is everything I know of as of December 11, 2024. There might be more. I tried. Resources used to compile this list: Danmeinews.com; this Carrd, last updated in March 2023; this other carrd last updated October 23 2024; list of danmei with official licenses on NovelUpdates; a similar list on Goodreads; danmei-specific list on Reddit that to my eye looks accurate for the larger publishers but isn't thorough for some of the smaller ones.
-
Seven Seas:
The full list of danmei novels licensed by Seven Seas is here. The full list of danmei manhua licensed by Seven Seas is here.
These titles are in various stages of publication, from "entire series released" to "license literally announced less than a week ago." As far as I know, all Seven Seas titles are available world-wide, through major distributors and libraries, and in e-book and print formats. Seven Seas translation quality varies but the editing is general strong and the editions are sturdy and nice. Note that Seven Seas isn't without controversy, especially for treating their contractors poorly resulting in them unionizing. Some people have also been unhappy with the fidelity of their translations compared to the original Chinese (I've been satisfied personally but ymmv).
Mo Xiang Tong Xiu titles:
The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System (Ren Zha Fanpai Zijiu Xitong)

Rosmei:
Rosmei licenses are Singapore distribution rights only. There is a list of international partners organizing group orders here. I've personally placed my orders through Yiggybean, as discussed in reply to this ask. Most of these titles are only being released as print editions, tho titles that weren't originally on JJWXC (of which there are several here) WILL have e-book editions. My first book from Rosmei arrived, and I found the translation and editing to be very strong. I can't speak to how accurate it may be to the Chinese original, but it read smoothly and had very few errors. Overall, though they've made some mistakes, they've been communicative and responsive.
Huai Shang titles:
Breaking Through the Clouds (Po Yun)
Hunt for the Leviathan (Po Yun 2 Tun Hai)
Ning Yuan titles:
BAIHE: At the World's Mercy

Peach Flower House:
Unfortunately, Peach Flower House has gone out of business. Peach Flower House titles were primarily for sale through their website and through some distributors, such as Amazon.com. Whether titles are e-book only, print only, or both varied by title. In my opinion, Peach Flower House has inconsistent inconsistent editing quality, but the books are very readable.
Da Feng Gua Guo:
The Imperial Uncle (Huang Shu)
Peach Blossom Debt (Taohua Zhai)
Other Titles:
Golden Terrace (Huang Jin Tai) by Cang Wu Bin Bai
In the Dark (Zai Hei An Zhong) by Jin Shisi Chai
Little Mushroom (Xiao Mogu) by Shisi
University of the Underworld (Yinjian Daxue) by Ziloi
-
Via Lactea:
The partial list of danmei novels licensed by Via Lactea is here, but there are titles I've seen them selling that aren't on this list.
Via Lactea titles are primarily for sale through their website and through some distributors, such as Amazon.com. All titles are either print-only or e-book + print. Only a handful have actually been released, the rest are licensed and presumably in progress. I've now read three titles published by Via Lactea and while the translations are decent I could wish the editing was more consistent. Everything reads as if it would have been improved by one more thorough proof read.
Jing Shui Bian Titles:
Salad Days (Jing Jiu)
Silent Hearts (Mo Mai)
Qing Lv Titles:
Painting Against the Natural Grain (Huahua Ben Shi Ni Tian Er Xing) by Qing Lv
Raising Myself in 2006 by Qing Lv

-
Aloha Comics:
A tiny, Hawaii-based press focusing on manhua. Titles are available through major retailers such as Amazon and Bookshop.org. I've purchased one of these titles - Nirvana in Fire - and was please with the quality despite a couple minor errors.
All these titles are manhua!
Day Off by Qing Cai
Heaven Official's Blessing Animation Manhua by Bilibili and Mo Xiang Tong Xiu (this is a manhua made based on the donghua, using donghua art)
Here U Are by DJUN
Link Click by Li Haoling and Haoliners (not technically danmei!)
Nirvana in Fire (Lang Ya Bang) by Hai Yan (not technically danmei!)
-
Monogatari Novels:
Monogatari Novels is based in Spain. These titles can also be ordered from at least some major retailers. Note that there has been some controversy about Monogatari Novels. I'm personally not ordering these works until more information is available.
Due to a lawsuit between Monogatari Novels and BLoved Publishing, How to Survive as a Villain and The Legendary Master's Wife are currently on hold.
BAIHE: A Clear and Muddy Loss of Love (Jing Wei Qing Shang) by Please Don't Laugh
BAIHE: Female General and Eldest Princess (NuJiangjun he Zhang Gongzhu) by Please Don't Laugh

The Legendary Master's Wife (Chuanshuo Zhi Zhu de Furen) by Yin Ya
The Silent Concubine (Ya Nu) by Qiang Tang
BAIHE: Soulmate manhua by Wenzhi Lizi
-
BLoved Publishing:
ngl I can't figure out exactly what is up with this, and there seems to be some controversy related to them and their relationship with Monogatari Novels. Their website is depressingly low on details. However, this list is for completeness, so here we are.
Due to a lawsuit between Monogatari Novels and BLoved Publishing, How to Survive as a Villain and The Legendary Master's Wife are currently on hold.
How to Survive as a Villain (Chuan Yue Cheng Fanpai Yao Ru He Huo Ming) manhua by Yi Yi Yi Yi
The Legendary Master's Wife (Chuanshuo Zhi Zhu de Furen) by Yin Ya
-
Chaleuria:
As far as I can tell, Chaleuria has not updated their webpage since April 2023, so the current status of in-progress titles is unknown. All titles are digital and/or e-book, and I'm not sure how to purchase them as I haven't tried.

World Hopping: Avenge Our Love (Ni Wufa Yuliao de Fenshou, Wo Du Neng Gei Ni Song Shang) by Xiaomao Bu Ai Jiao (no longer available)
-
Webnovel:
When I first made this list, I heard that Webnovel had a few titles but couldn't actually find them - but now I've found them, thanks to a list someone else put together. I'm including direct links to them, since I had so much trouble finding them at all.
Comrade: Almost a Cat-astrophic Love Story (Jintian ye Yao Nuli Dang Zhimao) by Demonic Fire (link)
My Boyfriend is a Dragon (Nanpiao Shi Tiaolong) by Chubby Strawberry Sauce (link)
The National Sweetheart Livestreamer is a Pro! (Quanmin Zhubo Shi Duiba) by Mo Shang Wang (link)
-
Honorable Mentions:
There are a handful of titles I know of that are official translations of C Novels. These are not books with contextual queerness, but for folks with an interest in Chinese history and culture, they are worth checking out anyway, especially because understanding these stories can help understand the above books. Also, some have active shipping fandoms (for example, I've written for Romance of the Three Kingdoms and Daomu Biji). I've included two above under the entry for titles from Aloha Comics (Link Click and Nirvana in Fire) and here are a couple others I currently know of:
Dream of the Red Chamber (Hong Lou Meng) by Cao Xueqin, available in translation for free from Project Gutenberg
The Grave Robbersā€™ Chronicles (Daomu Biji) by Nanpai Sanshu (six volumes are available in English from Things Asian Press)
Journey to the West (Xiyou Ji) by Wu Cheng-en, in four volumes from University of Chicago Press
The Legend of the Condor Heroes (She Diao Yingxiong Chuan) by Jin Yong, in four volumes from St. Martinā€™s Press
Romance of the Three Kingdoms (Sanguo Yanyi), attributed to Luo Guanzhong, available in translations for free from Archive.org
The Seven Heroes and Five Gallants (Zonglie Xiayi Chuan), attributed to Shi Yukun, available in translation for free from Archive.org
Water Margin (Shuihu Zhuan) by Shi Naiā€™an, from Tuttle Publishing
RESOURCE: List of Chinese speculative fiction in English translation
RESOURCE: More Chinese speculative fiction in English translation
I will add to the "Honorable Mentions" list if I find any other more mainstream titles with official translations.
-
Rumored Licenses:
Sometimes, I hear rumors about titles being licensed before the license is announced - and thus before we know which publisher has licensed them (assuming the rumor is even true). I thought I should note these somewhere. Titles I know of rumors about currently are:
A Certain Someone (Moumou) by Mu Su Li
Devil Venerable Also Wants to Know (Mozun Ye Xiang Zhidao) by Cyan Wings (a Spanish edition of this has been formally announced, which might account for the rumor)
The Fourteenth Year of Chenghua (Chenghua Shisi Nian) by Meng Xi Shi
Guide on How to Fail at Online Dating (Wanglian Fanche Zhinan) by Jiang Zi Bei
Immortal Koi is Going to Debut (Jinli Daxian Yao Chudao) by Mo Xi Ke
Mist (Bowu) by Wei Feng Ji Xu
-
A handful of other licenses are mentioned on the Carrd I linked at the beginning of this post; I have no idea the status of those titles and wasn't able to find information on them while putting together this post other than what was listed on that Carrd, so I've omitted them.
Now go forth, and buy some books!

Prelims round 1, poll 14
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Propaganda
Komura Monument Library, Kafka on the Shore by Haruki Murakami
There are mysteries in it, but still somehow it is a relatively safe haven. There are like two other people in it. You can LIVE in it when you are fifteen and honestly what else do you need. Especially when you are young Kafka on the Shore dealing with family curses.
The Thunderhead, Arc of a Scythe by Neal Shusterman:
It contains the collective knowledge of humanity and is a perfect, almost-sapient AI that doesnā€™t follow the ā€œutopia is actually dystopiaā€ trope
The Cloud Recesses' Library Pavilion, MĆ³ DĆ o ZĒ” ShÄ«/Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu:
I hope someone else has submitted a better propaganda; it's been awhile since I last read the novel. I hope there aren't any egregious mistakes.šŸ˜”
During the aggression that the Qishan Wen sect is deploying in a bid to conquer the rest of the five great sects, members of the Gusu Lan sect were made to burn down the buildings of their own dwelling, starting with the Library Pavilion. In standing his ground and refusing to do so, Lan Wangji had his leg broken by Wen Xu. In the meantime, Lan Xichen retrieves what documents and scrolls he can from the library and seeks refuge, assisted by (whom will later be) his trusted sworn brother, Jin Guangyao.
Later in the story, it will be revealed that in assisting Lan Xichen in protecting the contents of, and further in rebuilding, the Library Pavilion, Jin Guangyao has attained access to the forbidden chamber of the library, and subsequently has attained knowledge of a song of turmoil, which he then uses to induce qi deviation in Nie Mingjue, who is also a sworn brother to Lan Xichen and Jin Guangyao. Nie Mingjue later dies following this qi deviation.
The Librarium, Fire World by Chris d'Lacey:
It's a museum of books! There are Firebirds roaming the upper levels!
Aunt Josephine's Grammatical Library, A Series of Unfortunate Events:
So boring that the kids aren't even able to enjoy it even though reading is Klaus's greatest joy in life. Has a sick, plot-relevant, badass eye window looking out on its owner's greatest fear.
Library of Records at Heimlich Hospital, A Series of Unfortunate Events:
It is a vast archive held under a creepy hospital, possibly affiliated with a mysterious organisation, and curated by a cryptic man named Hal who insists that an archivists job is to file the documents, not read them:
"'The Library of Records contains information not only from Heimlich Hospital , but from all over the area. There's information about everything from poetry to pills, from picture frames to pyramids, and from pudding to psychology-and that's just in the P aisle, which we're walking down right now.'
'What an amazing place,' Klaus said. 'Just think of everything we can learn from reading all these files.'
'No, no, no,' Hal said, shaking his head sternly.
'We're supposed to file this information, not read it.'"
Also his organising principle is absolutely insane:
"First, you remove the paper clips and put them in this bowl. Then you glance at the information and figure out where it goes. Remember, try to read as little as possible.' He paused, unclipped a small stack of paper, and squinted at the top page. 'For instance,' he continued 'You only have to read a few words to see that these paragraphs are about the weather last week at Damocles Dock, which is on the shore of some lake someplace. So you would ask me to unlock cabinets in aisle D, for Damocles, or W, for weather, or even P, for paragraphs. It's your choice.'
'But won't it be difficult for people to find that information again?' Klaus asked. 'They won't know whether to look under D, W, or P.'
'Then they'll have to look under all three letters,' Hal said. 'Sometimes the information you need is not in the most obvious place.'"
Absolutely bonkers.

here to save your life.
Mo Dao Zu Shi (alternate names: Founder of diabolism, Grandmaster of demonic cultivation or mdzs for short) is an danmei novel written by Mo Xiang Tong Xu also known as mxtx in the fandom (we love you our god) which was originally published in 2016. Till now it has had multiple adaptations including an donghua, manhua, live action as well as a chibi version and an audio drama.
I highly suggest to send your support for the novel through official sites but since a lot of people can't afford to buy the books or watch and listen to the adaptations because of different issues of their own, I will be linking the places where these are available for free so that no one has to go through much trouble finding them.
Just a reminder that some of these are not official sites where the adaptations were aired which technically makes them (slightly) illegal but that's too common in the fandom so if you're new no you're not going to jail. The websites are safe and I will give specifications to avoid ads just in case.
š—”š—¼š˜ƒš—²š—¹
The novel has a total of 126 chapters. The main story consists of 113 chapters and the other 13 are extras. Reading the novel was my best decision ever and I can bet my life that you won't be disappointed with it. The characters, the storyline, the freaking lines. Everything is perfect from the top and to the bottom. It has been rated mature as it includes explicit content and slight non-con?? It wasn't really non-con but then also maybe it was. It's debatable really trust me on this. You can read it here. Happy reading!!!
š——š—¼š—»š—“š—µš˜‚š—®+š—–š—µš—¶š—Æš—¶ š—©š—²š—暝˜€š—¶š—¼š—»
To put it simply donghua is Chinese animation. Most people say that it's just anime but Chinese. But from experience I can say that don't say it out loud cause it makes some people really angry. The mdzs donghua has 3 seasons having 15, 8 and 12 episodes respectively. The chibi version is called Mo Dao Zu Shi Q and has 30 episodes consisting of 5-6 mins each.
Season 1 can be watched here.
Season 2 can be watched here.
Season 3 can be watched here.
Chibi version can be watched here.
(Tip: Download the brave browser from playstore before clicking the links as it blocks the ads completely so you can watch in peace. It is safe.)
š— š—®š—»š—µš˜‚š—®
Manhua refers to a Chinese comic. The mdzs manhua has a total of 259 chapters. But due to our luck they have been censored which have left a few people banging their head on the wall (including me). But do not worry cause those chapters can be found on twitter. But really tho how hard is it to uncensore a kiss?? Nvm moving on from my despair you can read the manhua here.
And if you have the unquenchable thirst to read the uncensored scenes then you can find them by just searching on Google tho it has been said that the manhua publishing company will publish them soon enough.
Edit: THANK YOU TO THAT ONE ANGEL ON INSTA i got to know about the website which has been posting about the uncensored scenes here.
š—Ÿš—¶š˜ƒš—²-š—®š—°š˜š—¶š—¼š—»
This part is my fav I swear. The live-action is called The Untamed and has a total of 50 episodes consisting of 43-45 mins each. They are all available on youtube for free!! I will still link them all here. They are absolutely breathtaking. Due to the Chinese censorship the plot has been altered but there's not much of a difference according to me. I do think that the romance is a bit subtle but it's there. You can feel it through the screen and it makes you swoon so bad. I'm completely in love with the drama. It's so beautifully done.
There is also a special edition of the drama with the same name which consists of 20 episodes with the duration time of almost an hour on each episode. It was made for international fans with a different ending and focuses more on the relationship btw our male leads instead of the plot. Some scenes have been cut and some have been added. It's just as amazing. It's available here. The first 3 episodes are also available on youtube.
(Again don't forget to use the brave browser to remove ads)
š—”š˜‚š—±š—¶š—¼ š——š—暝—®š—ŗš—®
Man the audio drama is just....perfect. There is not a single thing I can complain about. The emotions are perfectly conveyed. The audio effects of fighting or the sound of their breathing, even the slightest sounds have been added so make it as real as possible and it certainly does it's job. Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation Novels (1-5)
Tumblr media
Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu
Read: 2024.12.20 - 2025.01.01.
Score: 5/5 ~
This was brilliant from start to finish! It has been long since I read a book or series which turned out to be such a page turner. This is was my first experience with Mo Xiang Tong Xu and the hype for the series as well as for the books was fully justified. I loved the style of writing, its jumping between present and the past, smartly inserting explanations - which werenā€™t boring and unnecessary long - into the story and the slowly building and transforming of the two main charactersā€™ relationship.
I canā€™t speak on the English translation since I canā€™t read nor understand Chinese. There were parts which were awkward, you could feel that something was lost in translation, however it didnā€™t take away from the structure and the story itself. .
The Story in simple terms:
ā€œWhen everyone was praising him out of fear, Lan Wangji rebuked him to his face. When everyone spat and hated on him, Lan Wangji stood by his side.Ā ā€
Wei Wuxian was a hated man towards the end of his life, and thanks to the combined efforts of the main clans he died. He is been dead for 13, when he is suddenly brought back to life after a man offers his body as a vessel for him to possess and exact revenge for him. Complications ensue, unanswered mysteries arise and Wei Wuxian finds himself with Lan Wangji again, who he was not on the best of terms with in his previous life.
.
I found the word engaging and fun to see/learn about, however mainly it was the medium for us to be introduced to this insanely colourful cast of characters.

3. What were your top five books of the year?
I'm bad at favorites in general, and this year I read a lot of books that I very much enjoyed but wouldnā€™t quite say I loved. But I will say, in different ways and for different reasons: Land of Milk and Honey by C. Pam Zhang, The Book of Goose by Yiyun Li, Heartstopper Volume 5 by Alice Oseman, Dry Land by Ruby Rae Spiegel, and Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation/Mo Dao Zu Shi by Mo Xiang Tong Xu. (I don't know if any particular volume was a favorite book of the year, but the story overall is absolutely one of my favorite things I experienced this year.) Now I'm gonna move on to the next question before I can continue second guessing this answer...
16. What is the most over-hyped book you read this year?
Not sure if it counts as being overhyped, but I didnā€™t enjoy Greedy by Jen Winston as much as I was led to believe I would by some enthusiastic people on the internet. Probably the most hyped books I've read recently, in general, would be The Hunger Games series, and I had a great time reading them but maybe not quite as good of a time as their popularity would suggest.
17. Did any books surprise you with how good they were?
Grown by Tiffany D. Jackson is not a genre I read much of (YA thriller-y drama), but it kept me absolutely riveted throughout.Ā
25. What reading goals do you have for next year?
There were a few things I started reading this year and then put aside because I wasnā€™t quite in the right mood for them, including but not limited to The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang, She Who Became the Sun by Shelley Parker-Chan, and Little Foxes Took Up Matches by Katya Kazbek. Iā€™m still very excited about these books and would love to read them next year! I hope to finish the book/series I am currently reading (the Lymond booksā€¦). In general I would love to read the many books I already own but have not yet read! Maybe my goal should be to read books at a faster rate than I acquire new ones...

[ID: A comic adapting the opening of chapter one of Scum Villain's Self-Saving System. The cover is in color and shows Shen Yuan, a young Chinese man holding a thick book, looking back suspiciously at Shen Qingqiu, a xianxia cultivator in green robes who looks back at him coolly. It has the title and "Chapter One" on it, as well as art and story credits to Vivian Ha and Mo Xiang Tong Xu.
The comic is in grayscale and uses narration from chapter one. Shen Yuan explains that Proud Immortal Demon Way is a male power fantasy stallion novel by Airplane Shooting Towards the Sky detailing the rise to power of the protagonist, Luo Binghe. Luo Binghe is depicted smirking with women posing behind him.
Luo Binghe's tragic backstory is depicted, starting with his adoption by a kind washwoman who passes away, leading Luo Binghe to join a righteous cultivation sect, where he faces relentless abuse under his cruel master. Then Luo Binghe is kicked into the Endless Abyss by Shen Qingqiu, where he discovers his half-demon heritage and uses the sword Xin Mo to begin a reign of terror.
Shen Yuan explains Luo Binghe's meteoric rise to power as emperor of the realms, the bloody vengeance he wreaks on Cang Qiong Mountain Sect, and his huge harem. However, he then scornfully yells "As if!!" and curses, "Dumbfuck author! Dumbfuck novel!" Right after that, he dies of food poisoning.
Shen Yuan's ghost begins to yell about wasting his time on such an awful novel, cursing the poor writing and shallow characters, including Shen Qingqiu, Luo Binghe's master. He yelps when a floating screen labeled as a System appears before him and begins to transport his spirit somewhere, informing him he is to "transform a stupid work into a first-rate classic." The comic ends on a hazy black background and someone asking, "Shidi? Shidi, can you hear me?" End ID]

Shonen Note vol. 5 by Yuhki Kamatani
Yutaka Aoi is sweet, sensitive, and loves singingā€¦so much so that he canā€™t help but be brought to tears whenever he listens to beautiful music. He also has a talent few boys have: he can sing soprano. So when Yukata overhears his middle schoolā€™s choir group perform, he canā€™t resist joining in. Inspired by the angelic sound of Yukataā€™s voice, the choir eagerly accepts him into their ranks. But when Yukataā€™s voice begins to change as he enters puberty, the journey ahead will be one of self-discovery and reflection for not only himself, but also for those around him.

Thanks all for sharing your joys and recommendations! I'm collating the list (so far) here for myself/y'all:
Books that were recommended that I already read & loved & recommend myself :)
The Witch King by Martha WellsĀ - after a betrayal, a tired demon helps his angry lesbian witch best friend go on a quest to rescue the witch's stoic paladin wife
Gideon the Ninth / the Locked Tomb series by Tamsyn Muir - engaging puzzlebox story set in a spacefaring necromantic cult, multilayered & twisty worldbuilding, intense moral complexity
This is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El-MohtarĀ Ā & Max Gladstone - lyrical sapphic love letters between two agents on either side of a violent war across time and space
The Goblin Emperor by Katherine AddisonĀ - A young man unexpectedly becomes emperor and befuddles the court with his kindness
The Bartimaeus Trilogy by Jonathan Stroud (though I hear there's a fourth book now!) - GREAT! Engaging, and I wouldn't describe it as "feel good." Sort of like Howl's Moving Castle if it was told from Calcifer's POV and also Howl was an adolescent British wizard who was trying to grow up to be evil in a British empire running on wizardry
Sunshine by Robin McKinleyĀ - a baker who specializes in cinnamon rolls escapes a vampire abduction--unheard of--and returns to baking cinnamon rolls. AMAZING first person rambling POV & also always makes me want to run off and start an imaginary bakery
The Lathe of Heaven by Ursula K. Le GuinĀ
The Book Thief by Markus ZusakĀ
Discworld by Terry PratchettĀ
The Queenā€™s Thief by Megan Whalen TurnerĀ - stunning, engaging, delightful, twisty, read these sixteen million times and find some new double meaning every time. A young thief brags he can steal anything; and he's right.
Enderā€™s Game and Enderā€™s Shadow by Orson Scott Card
So You Want to Be a Wizard by Diane DuaneĀ - iconic worldbuilding, lengthy ongoing series by a delightful author
The Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation by Mo Xiang Tong XuĀ
The Inheritance Trilogy by NK JemisinĀ
Diana Wynne Jones in general
Beartown by Fredrik Backman - heavy subject matter, lyrical prose

hey friends Iā€™m looking for some reading recommendations!
Iā€™ve just been rereading old favorites, which is a joy, but Iā€™m hankering for something new to surprise me and capture me. Iā€™m open to anything but have particular soft spots for:
- narrators or POV characters with distinctive, atypical voices, perspectives, or assumptions who make an ordinary or extraordinary world more interesting by being seen through their lens (ex. Martha Wellsā€™ Murderbot, owletā€™s This, You Protect)
- clever, precise plotting and storytelling such that final conclusions or reveals click together like delightful, unexpected but perfectly predictable clockworkā€” the sort that you can see obviously in the first chapter but only after youā€™ve read the last page; stories where the authors trust the reader to pay attention and figure stuff out (ex. Megan Whalen Turnerā€™s The Queenā€™s Thief series, The Westing Game, Pamela Deanā€™s The Secret Country)
- worldbuilding with depth and texture ā€” it feels explorable, immersive, like you could study it, like you could get lost, like other stories are going on just off the page (The Secret Countey gets a second honorary mention here, great book, I highly recommend)
- characters you can root for, especially ones that are slowly, quietly, unregretfully tearing themselves apart for something they care about (Kip Mdang from Hands of the Emperor, Newt from Designations Congruent with Things, Nico Dā€™Angelo from the Percy Jackson books, Arthur in rageprufrockā€™s Presque Vu)
I like stories with momentum, stories that swallow you. I like beautiful things. I like stories that surprise me and make me think. Help a gal out? What stories have captured you?
