Right-wing threats of political violence are already successfully intimidating elected officials who had planned to defy the Trump administration's deportation efforts.

After winning reelection by twenty four points in the general election, Nora Vargas, Chair of the Board of San Diego’s County Supervisors, announced she would not be taking the oath of office for a second term. In her resignation statement, the District One representative cited “personal safety and security reasons.” She was the target of personal attacks and online vitriol following her leadership role involving a recent county policy aiming to limit cooperation with federal immigration officials in advance of incoming President-elect Donald Trump’s promised crackdown on undocumented immigrants.

Unsurprisingly, the police are less willing to protect elected officials whose policities they disagree with. San Diego County spent $41,000 in a month on Vargas's security, whereas for a former Board Chair, it spent on average $110,000/mo on his protective security.

A local TV news outlet acquired records last August showing that the County spent $41,000 in the prior month for a security detail for Vargas. Earlier, 10News reported the county spent nearly $2 million on a protective detail for former Board Chair Nathan Fletcher over a year and a half. An underreported story about San Diego County Sheriffs has been their history of hostility toward political figures not considered to have positions in line with the rank and file officers' political action efforts. These range from a 2009 raid, based on a neighbor’s noise complaint on then-candidate Francine Busby’s fundraiser in which multiple people were pepper-sprayed and a hostess was arrested, to a quid pro quo in a 2023 deal with the SD Police Officers Association funding opposition to now-Supervisor Monica Montgomery’s campaign. County Sheriff Kelly Martinez weighed in on the Supervisors’ migrant resolution by saying she would not be following the policy limiting her cooperation with immigration authorities unless they have a warrant signed by a state or federal judge. It’s my opinion that the Sheriff’s Office really isn’t all that concerned about threats made against politicians they don’t agree with.

Samira was quiet. “Leave London society and be a housewife?”

He frowned, sitting as she slipped behind him. “I’d never force ya to do anything ya dinna want to.”

“I know that. …I don’t mind being your mistress—oh, don’t make that face. It’s what I am. Your mistress.”

“Mistress to who?”

“You’re still in love with Edeline.” It wasn’t an accusation. It was a fact. “And I know you’re in love with Byron—even if he doesn’t realize it… or return it. I know you’re not ready to be married again, but I know you love me as well. And I’m content to be your mistress in the meanwhile.”

Montgomery sighed, closing his eyes. “Sometimes I think I’m the most selfish man in the world. I dinna deserve any of this.”

Samira hugged his body tighter. “You’re speaking nonsense. I don’t fuck selfish people. They always focus on themselves and not their lover. You certainly do not.”

He snorted at her bluntness. “...I feel guilty so often. What’d Edeline think of me?”

“Well, would you have acted on your attraction to Byron if she lived?”

“I wasn’t aware I was attracted to him until we met again. Perhaps I’d ‘ve found him attractive but never acted on it. I dinna ken.”

“Then why should you feel guilty?”

“He’s still me brother-in-law.”

“Men marry their dead brother’s wives all the time.”

“That’s different.”

“Is it?”

“I miss her so much,” he whispered. That wasn’t a confession you were supposed to tell your lover. “I was… lost when she died. I dinda know what to do, what the point of livin’ was. …On the first anniversary of her death, I was in Greece, had spent the day in the ruins of the Temple of Poseidon in Sounion. Standin’ on the cliffs, overlooking the ocean… considered jumpin’ off. To be with her. End me misery. In the end, I was uh too much of fuckin’ coward to do it, so I walked back to me hotel room and drank ‘til I passed out. It wasn’t the first time I’d considered suicide. Or the last.” He sighed, sniffling. “I’ve never told anyone that. I’m just… so afraid of bein’ alone.”

Samira rubbed his back gently as he bowed his head, near tears. “You’re not alone. You have your family, friends who care about you, patients who rely on you. And of course, you have me. I have you in my claws, you’re not getting away from me anytime soon,” she added, chuckling. 

Montgomery pulled her into his lap and buried his face in her neck. “I love ya,” he whispered. 

She nodded. “...I’m going to India after Byron and Eleora’s wedding. I think my parents would actually like you considering you hate England, hate the empire, and support the independence of your own nation. You’re everything they would want in a husband for me, except that you’re white and Christian.”

He chuckled.

“I want to show you the real India—you haven’t lived until you’ve tried my Ājī’s Basundi.”

Mobile, 'Billy', 17, (he/him)

Typically very warm and friendly, and the top offender when it comes to passive-aggressively making people take care of themselves. Currently going through an aloof phase, he’ll get over it though. Has and has had, a lot of nonconventional pets over the years snakes, turtles, frogs, salamanders, a couple ant farms (fire ants once though he made sure his parents didn’t find out about that…). Locked in a lifelong feud with New Orleans over Mardis Gras (he also has a crush on her but the feud is more important >:[) 

Fort Wayne, 'Winnie', 14, (she/her)

Personality much like her namesake General “mad” Anthony Wayne. Her passion for just about everything she’s into isn’t always bad but she is very easy to rile up, very short fuse, regular in both the nurses and principals offices. Really much like Alabama, but somehow worse. Very passionate about the environment but in a very 14 yr old way, out here scolding her family members for things like not recycling and leaving the sink on while they brush their teeth. 

Huntsville, 'Hunt', 13, (she/her)

Loudest of the kids no competition, the child can scream and will not hesitate to do so. Usually just because she’s just so excited and can’t keep it all bottled up or she feels like she’s going to burst. Got her passion for mechanics from Indiana, but instead of getting into cars and developing a bordering unhealthy obsession with NASCAR like mom and dad went “you know what’s cooler than race cars? Spaceships!!” and it all was downhill from there. Definitely a Mathlete. 

Evansville, 'Evan', 12, (she/her)

The most mild of all the kids, not really loud and angry like dad, not really quiet and passive-aggressive like mom. She’s the mild salsa of people, and she is definitely happy that way. Very interested in medical fields, particularly the ones most people find the grossest, knows a lot of medicine history though mostly civil war and ww1. Walk away now if you don’t want to hear about the history of amputations and prosthetics. 

Tuscaloosa, 'Lucy', 11, (he/him)

The rough and tumble kid, much like Alabama when he was young. Stubborn and very opinionated. Wishes he was still the capital, often jealous that Montgomery gets to be it. Football is already his entire personality, wears nothing but Crimson Tide merch, and has played youth football since he was four. Regular in urgent care, not always for football related injuries because he is also just has dumbass as a personality trait. 

Montgomery, 'Monty', 11, (he/him)

Most quiet and anxious of the kids, much like Indiana when she was young, and also like his namesake General Richard Montgomery. Even already often wishes Tuscaloosa was still the capital just to not have to deal with the responsibility of it. Absolute history nerd, “did ya know-” could be his catchphrase with how often he walks up to any available family member to go on his latest ramble. Plays football too, but really hates it, too nervous to tell Alabama he doesn’t like it. 

Indianapolis, 'IJ', 11, (he/him)

How to kindly call an eleven year old a snobby, self-important, prick. Genuinely thinks he’s the center of the universe, not helped by the fact that he is in the dead center of Indiana. Has that previously mentioned bordering unhealthy obsession with NASCAR. He's also just so... annoyingly patriotic, but doesn't show it until you're too far in to the conversation to just walk away.

South Bend, 'Joey', 9, (they/them)

I mean this affectionately, they’re weird. You either die a weird little boy or live to see yourself become a weird nonbinary teenager. Car enthusiasts, but not specifically NASCAR like the majority of the family, just generally likes cars. While you studied the blade they were at antique car shows. Really close with good ol’ Uncle Michigan. 

Birmingham, 'Bee', 8, (he/him)

Greco-Roman myths nerd over here, never going to leave his PJO phase. That baby of the family privileges really make up half this guys personality, gets whatever he wants bc he's mamas baby boy. Not really relevant to his personality but he is a solid kid, v dense.

Between Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and discord, I have a list of 123 books in no particular order that my friends and family loved this year. If it was a series then I listed the first book. Each star is an additional recommendation. I haven’t read all of these, they may or may not reflect my personal opinions, though my favorite books are on the list too.
