In honor of Barricade Day, another rare and intriguing find for Les Mis musical fans.
A highlights reel from the US 3rd National Tour, 1993.
Most notably, it features a 30-year-old Alice Ripley as Fantine. Meanwhile, the rest of the cast includes Donn Cook (Jean Valjean), David Masenheimer (Javert), Ron Sharpe (Marius), Angela Pupello (Éponine), Barbra Russell (Cosette), Gary Mauer (Enjolras), J.P. Dougherty (Thénardier), Gina Farrell (Mme. Thénardier), and Jamie Cronin (Young Cosette). And if I'm not mistaken, Courfeyrac, whom we get to hear sing one line ("Then join in the fight that will give you the right to be free!") is none other than Brian d'Arcy James.

Madame Putiphar Groupread. Book Four, Chapter I
𝔗𝔥𝔢 ℜ𝔢𝔱𝔲𝔯𝔫 𝔬𝔣 𝔉𝔞𝔱𝔥𝔢𝔯 𝔇𝔦𝔩𝔩𝔬𝔫
(clickbaity title. Did you know Borel’s Irish Priest DILF was a real person, you can see him here and wonder with me about Borel’s taste in men)

Berentz Christian, Still life with bohemian chrystals, cups and a pocketwatch , oil on canvas, 1700-1720
{ @sainteverge + @counterwiddershins }
The King and Pompadour are sitting by the fireplace (in shape of an arc d’amour. this is romanticism, anything that can be symbolic will be so. I choose to believe this is a tacky, slightly pinkish vaginal adjacent architectural creation, because sometimes my brain gets art directed by Ken Russel's team. I looked up the term to see if this is an architectural term, and it still might be, but it also could be a Roman de la Rose reference, a degraded reference to the arc of pure love that appears in the novel’s House of Fortune)
Madame P and her King act like a parody of bourgeois domesticity. She knits, he tries to tolerate a heavy indigestion. they both yawn because yawning is contagoius. We see the King has changed shapes once again, as a character whose physical form relfects his inner emotions, he is back into his grotesque, weak, flaccid, deflated frame. His mistress playfully suggests a requiem might be in order. She chides him for being so uncultured (the King believes music to be harmful for adult males) Mme P is an enjoyer of the Luminaries of the Enlightenment, as we know, on a shallow level, so she chooses to entertain the King with some base gossip instead of a selection of arias in languedoc. Father Dillon, Patrick’s old would be protector, reappears, at least in name only. It’s fun to see him again, this time not through Patrick’s naif vision… why do we see him again though? He is an example of an assimilated irishman, and being so high up in the clergy he is well connected enough that mm p and pharao casually gossip about him and his money. He is not alone but an atom in the circles of aristocratic libertinism, and although this game is harmless and stupid (basically here to illustrate how base the people high up are, and how money mixes up into their sexualized games, mme p fake reads the enlightenment and her partenaire claims music is harmful, and both can only bare talk about sex and money. Once again the supervillains of this novel are as banal as they can be, nothing is remarkable about them-mme p is as least a skilled social climber/a good lover etc-and these mediocre beings are tasked with destroying the lives of the much worthier novel’s heroes)(which honestly makes them very Roman and very contemporary) borel seems to be saying, no one so high up is clean.
But not even Mme P’s boob size contest story can disipate the clouds of annoyance darkening Pharaoh’s brow. She notices this, and her tone shifts to a submissive one -we understand how clever she is in testing the royal mood’s waters- The King confesses he’ll break under the weight of the scepter… He wishes to abdicate, because governing a people is too much work. What caused this crisis? His nightime snack wasn’t served, lunch had been detestable. So, the people he governs are basically, only his servants, the royal scope is as narrow as a long-lens. He governs to be served. Simple as that. The people, he complains, no longer have a vocation of service, and it’s all the fault of those meddling Philosophers who desacralize everything.
To highlight how deflated the King is in his current presentation, Borel displays him completely helpless or unwilling to exert direct violence as we have seen before. He asks mme P to avenge him because the new girl on “the Parc” has affronted him. Deborah’s curse, and unsubmissiveness/resistance to him, have left an impression on the King. Are we to believe most women on the parc choose to be nice to the King, play the game in hopes of a confortable life/social ascent?
Pompadour suggests Deborah cannot stay in the Parc, but, being also unfit for life in society, she must be locked in the most secret royal prison. Madame P assures the King his people haven’t forgotten how to serve him, Deborah is after all, a foreigner, which should explain her uncouthness/ignorance. She is a virago and a savage. She is worth much less than the average french subject. Like a new Scherezade, Pompadour prepares some coffee (distracting the royal baby with the shiny marabout) and resumes her role as a story teller.

In 1978 the ABC made a film about Amy Sherwin.
Frances Amy Sherwin  (1855-1935) was one of five children, born and raised  in Tasmania’s Huon Valley. Even as a child she had a lovely voice, and dreamed of becoming a famous singer. This seemed highly unlikely, as the family struggled to make a living on a remote farm. Amy, as she was known,  would wander down to the paddock closest to  the road and sing her heart out.  She later confessed that she hoped a passerby  would hear,  and carry her off to stardom. In an autobiographical piece she wrote;
‘It was not until my tenth year that I had any lessons, except in the way of home teaching. Then a great treat came into my life in the person of Mr Russell, a dear old music teacher……..In order to take these lessons I had to get up at four in the morning and ride or drive along a difficult bush track for eight miles.’
However, the Sherwins did possess a treasured piano;
‘The care we lavished on our piano was  in the eyes of our neighbours in the bush, only another  instance of the quips and cracks of the ‘Mad Sherwins’.  I well remember one scorching summer day, when our homestead and all the country round was suddenly enveloped in a fierce bush fire. It was washing-day, and I have heard my mother say that the tubs were charred to a cinder and crumbled at a touch, but that the damp clothes inside remained in intact, white heaps. But it was to the piano we devoted all our energies at this domestic crisis. It was covered with wet blankets and dragged to an island of shingle in the middle of the Huon River, that ran near our house. Even in that position it did not escape, and the charred old instrument is still treasured in my Tasmanian home…’
As she grew up, Amy performed locally in concerts and musicals.  Amazingly, in 1878 her childhood dream came true.  The story went that  members of  the  Pompei  and Cagli  Italian Opera Company  were picnicking near her home and were impressed when they  heard her singing.  Now the picnicking part sounds a little unlikely to me , but never mind.  She accepted an invitation to join the company, and made her professional  debut  at Hobart’s Theatre Royal.  That same year  she married Hugh Gorlitz, a German businessman with interests in Australia.
Her voice inspired these verses of effusive praise, published in June, 1878;
Tumblr media
Before long Amy  was thrilling audiences  in Melbourne,  Ballarat and Sydney. She was dubbed The Tasmanian Nightingale.  It was not all glamour, as touring could be hazardous in those days. On one occasion, when the singer and her entourage were  in the middle of nowhere,  the leather on the  coach’s brake failed during  a steep descent.   When it was finally brought to a halt it was Amy who came up with a solution, which was to use her  boots  as replacement leather on the brake.
Amy Sherwin travelled the world, but made her home in England. The family settled in a lovely property at Hampstead, where Amy gave concerts in the vast  music room.  The property was once targeted by burglars, and judging  by a report in The Evening News (October 24 1895), they certainly made themselves at home;
Mme.  Amy Sherwin’s house has been burgled, everything of value taken, everything else broken. The family were at the seaside. The thieves cooked supper in the kitchen, and made a dark lantern of Mr. Gorlitz’s new silk hat. The candle  fell over, and the hat, as a hat, is a hat no more.
Tumblr media
By 1907 Amy was living in Kent, but also kept a suite of rooms above her music  studio in London’s Bond Street. She became a singing teacher.  It was at this time that The Tasmanian Nightingale made her final  visit to her old home. A journalist with Launceston’s Daily Telegraph attended a concert in Launceston;
Amy Sherwin has worn remarkably well. Perhaps her temperament and continual change of scene has something to do with it. The voice of today is the same old sweet one, with intense culture added. There was no straining after effect, none of those difficult trills and excursions into the attics which vocalists of the De Mursca type are so fond of. One did not make oneself known to her. Musical stars as a rule have not much time to waste talking of days  that are gone. This is a moving-on age, and Amy Sherwin and the writer have to keep going.
During WWI Amy helped raise funds under the banner of the Women’s Auxiliary Force by arranging concerts.
Tumblr media
Sadly, Amy was eventually forced to give up work completely. She spent her time caring for her actress daughter Bobbie, who was suffering from tuberculosis. Adding to her troubles, Amy and her husband separated,

Amy’s daughter Jeanette ‘Bobbie’.
Never wise at managing money,  Madame Sherwin eventually  fell  into poverty.  She moved to a  small cottage in Essex, but as she was ineligible for an aged pension she struggled to cover the rent. In 1934 she became ill herself, and was unable to pay for her care.
In a charity ward at London’s Charing Cross Hospital, doctors and nurses  were struck by the sound of a beautiful soprano  voice. It was the almost eighty year old Amy; down on her luck, but still singing like a nightingale.
Tumblr media
Amy in later life.
When news of Amy’s sad  situation reached Tasmania a public fund was set up. Despite the difficult economic times of the 1930s, two hundred pounds was raised and forwarded  to London. The singer expressed her appreciation in a letter to the Mayor of Hobart;
‘I must crave your indulgence for not having acknowledged before the last generous help sent by you on behalf of the kind friends who have so warm-heartedly aided me in my desperate plight, caused by my darling daughter’s sad state of health. As it happened, the kind donation, final instalment, sent by you, arrived on the eve of my being admitted to hospital as above for treatment, and which was too costly for me  to obtain otherwise.
I hope to be out of hospital in a week or 10 days, but I cannot wait till then to thank you all for your warm-hearted practical help in my disaster, and I send off this message from my sick bed- hoping you will pass round the fact that I am most deeply touched, and would write more fully but that circumstances prohibit a longer letter.’
Those ‘circumstances’ were that she was just too frail. Amy  died on September 20 the following year. A wreath was sent from the Tasmanian Government with the message; ‘A tribute to the memory of a famous Tasmanian, from the Government of Tasmania.’
Her daughter  Jeanette only survived a further twelve months. Son Louis died in America in 1978.
Madame  Sherwin  is remembered by a plaque on the wall of the former Del Sarte’s Rooms, on the corner of Hobart’s Harrington and Davey Streets.

Des scientifiques étudient une espèce côtière décimée par la tempête Fiona
See on Scoop.it - EntomoScience

I’m thinking of a new les miserables fancast
This is, in part, a petty response to the, hopefully, well intentioned, albeit poorly thought out and tone deaf diversity of the bbc miniseries from a few years ago. Ie. The one with Lily Collins as Fantine. I mean seriously. All the non white characters were either antagonistic or killed off or both. I call it “The BBC Merlin Problem”.
At any rate. I’m envisioning this as a sort of modern retelling of the musical. Like DiCaprio R&J or Russell T Davies’s midsummer nights dream. What I’ve got so far is:
Idris Elba. Jean Valjean
Laura Harrier. Fantine
Sofia Wylie. Cosette.
Joshua Bassett. Marius
Gaten Matarazzo. Enjolras.
Sophie Anne Caruso. Eponine
Andrew Barth Feldman. Grantaire
Christian Borle. Thenadier
Kathryn Hahn. Mme Thenadier
Jake Gyllenhaal. Javert
Reasonings. I wanted to put in actors who I know can either sing or at the very least carry a tune. I wanted to have Eponine actually resemble parents a little bit. Compared to the miniseries which put in Erin Kellyman as the daughter of Adeel Akhtar and Olivia Colman. And yes. I know Gaten has already been in Les Miserables. That’s why I put him in there. I couldn’t find any age appropriate actors for Gavroche. So I had to leave him out.
Tell me what you think?

I know this will not be of interest to 99.99% of people, but this is what I have been working on and and I want answers.  On Gallica I started reading this book called "Causeries parisiennes" which is a collection of articles published in la Revue Nationale between 1861 and 1862. It was written by "Horace de Lagardie" and penciled in on the title page it says "pseudonym of Madame de Peyronnet." Who was Madame de Peyronnet? That is the question. In the "about" section of the website, the author is listed as "Caroline Philippine Élisabeth Bertin Ctesse de Peyronnet." My problem is that I cannot find anything else about Caroline Philippine Élisabeth Bertin Comtesse de Peyronnet (except other sites like amazon and walmart which list her as the author of "Causeries parisiennes"-- and one exception which I will get to later). Okay so maybe Caroline Philippine Élisabeth Bertin is just a forgotten person, no wikipedia page, no geneology information, didn’t write any other books or articles, maybe there isn't anything else about there about her. Possible. But consider: 1. I found a book from 1884 called "Les Pseudonymes du jour" which confirms that Horace de Lagardie is the pseudonum of Mme de Peyronnet. 2. Then I found an English book of literary criticism about French writers with an article from 1877 which cites an article in a British publication that same year "signed by a name which a few years since made a slight mark in French journalism,. Horace de Lagardie is, we believe, the pseudonum of a clever lady." They remark that Horace "writes English almost as well as French" and that "he may at least profess to know England exceptionally well."   3. Then I found the diary of M. E. Grant Duff he mentions a Madame de Peyronnet, noting that her grandfather was "one of Polignac's colleagues," and who was living in England in 1869 before going back to France, after which he notes that she is undergoing hardship due to the Franco-Prussian war (M. de Peyronnet died at the siege of Paris.) He also referenced "the brilliant writer who veils a real name under the nom de plume of Horace de Lagardie." This didn't give me a first name for Mme or M Peyronnet but it does tentatively link Mme. Peyronnet and Horace. 4. By searching "Mme de Peyronnet" I found the diary of Mary Enid Evelyn (Lady Layard). From reading that I found that she spent time with the Peyronnet family in England and in France, documented in entries dated between 1869 and 1891. She particular spent time with the two sisters Isabel (who would become Lady Sligo) and Madeleine. Horace can’t be Isabel or Madeleine because they were both unmarried at the relevant time (mademoiselles) but she also mentions Mme de Peyronnet. 5. Okay now with the help of English genealogy websites I found Isabel Raymonde Browne (de Peyronnet), wife of the George John Browne, 3rd Marquess of Sligo, sister of Marie Madeleine Claire de Peyronnet and daughter of Georgiana Frances de Peyronnet and Paul Louis Jules de Peyronnet (who was apparently the son of Pierre-Denis, Comte de Peyronnet, who is the last Comte de Peyronnet with a Wikipedia page that I can find but it doesn't include anything about his family.) (They also had a third daughter, Laura de Peyronnet, who married Lord Arthur Russell.) 6. Well Caroline Philippine Élisabeth Bertin doesn’t have much of an online presence by Georgina Frances actually has a Wikipedia page. She was a British journalist who was a correspondent for The Times during the Franco-Prussian war. 7. There is also an entry about her on the website for the Centre for the Study of the Legacies of British Slavery. In states:
Georgina Frances Whitfield, born in the West Indies 1815 [. . .] Moved to England with her mother not long after her birth, then moved to France in 1822 or 1823. Married Vicomte Jules de Peyronnet (1804-1872) in London 03/02/1835. His father opposed the marriage and stopped his allowance. '[T]hanks to the income from the Whitfield sugar plantations, however, they were able to tour Europe in style. Later, with the gradual abolition of slavery in the English [sic] West Indies, this source of revenue began to dry up, and they (and her mother) moved to St Vincent in 1840.' They returned to France in 1844. Wrote for Edinburgh Review etc., then for The Times during the Franco-Prussian war. 'She probably did much of the translation work for her husband's French edition of Macaulay's History of England (1861).'
At this point I am almost certain that Georgina Frances, not Caroline Philippine Élisabeth Bertin, is Horace de Lagardie.
Going back to source 2, it would make sense that she raised in England, not France, so no wonder her English was as good as her French and she knew England very well.
With regards to source 3. Duff’s notes about her being in France during the Franco-Prussian War line up with her being a correspondent for the Times.
Duff mentions her relation to a man who worked with Polignac; see source 5, her father-in-law was charged with treason alongside Polignac.
As for source 7, it provides more cooboration about why she knew English and French so well and that she was able to translate her husband's book.
8. And now, I come to an article in the New Zealand Slavonic Journal from 1988 about Russian writer Ivan Turgenev. In a section about Turgenev's relationship with Lamartine, we learn that the two were introduced by "an intelligent and beautiful cosmopolitan literary lady."  Apparently it is much debated who this lady was. This author's suggestion?
"Georgine Frances, vicomtesse de Peyronnet" who published "under the pseudonum Horace de Lagardie in La Revue nationale and Le Journal des debats."
"Mme de Peyronnet was found wherever opposition to Napoleon III or similar autocracy dared to raise its head."
Furthermore, a review of a book by Turgenev was published in la Revue nationale et étrangère and reprinted in Causeries Parisiennes (vol. 2). So Georgina knew Turgenev. And Horace de Lagardie wrote about Turgenev.
"She is found mentioned in many accounts of the period, such as those by Nassau William Senior and Mountstuart E. Grant Duff, but see especially Edouard Grenier, Souvenirs litteraires, Paris, 1894, p. 22." (I did especially see Souveniers litteraires, page 22 but all it did was confirm that Georgina de Peyronnet knew Lamartine, not that she was Horace. Also idk why the author writes “Georgine” instead of “Georgina.” All the other sources cited by this author are in Russian so I can’t look there.)
So yeah, I am not sure how this author can say for sure that she was Horace de Lagardie but all the circumstantial evidence I have presented 1-6 make me lean towards that. Now, onto what I believe to be the original instance of Caroline Philippine Élisabeth Bertin Comtesse de Peyronnet being called Horace de Lagardie.
9. Again, there is no biographical information to be found about this supposed person. The only place where I have been able to find a mention of  "Caroline Philippine Élisabeth Bertin Comtesse de Peyronnet" is in an edition of the diary of Xavier Marnier which was published in 1968 with notes by Eldon Kaye, who was a French professor at Carleton University.
Here is an article from 2010 about that publication (with bracketed translations by me)(I only have access to the first page of the article though):
This edition was received enthusiastically: Kaye was awarded a silver medal by the Académie Française for his '[long and patient work presenting the text]'; Andre Billy, writing in Le Figaro commented on Kaye's having '[taken so much care to decipher the manuscript]', and L'Est Republicain, a well-respected regional daily newspaper, claimed that Kaye '[presented and annotated it with an admirable precision and minutia].' Ironically, in view of these laudatory comments, a comparison of the manuscripts with Kaye's published version shows that Kaye's work is highly inaccurate and offers only a very approximate and often deformed view of what Marnier actually wrote. Although no reviewer has hitherto suggested the extent of Kaye's incompetence, the quality of the edition has previously been questioned by both the late Pierre Moreau and Andre Monchoux. Moreau criticizes the arrangement of the texts, but limits his criticism to two cases which '[will make one understand why the edition did not resolve all the problems I found with the manuscript].' Monchoux points out a few ‘[spelling mistakes]’ and asks, perhaps disingenuously,
(and that's where my preview ends) Your honor, I rest my case. There is lots of circumstantial evidence that Georgina Peyronnet was Horace de Lagardie, plus the scholarly article about Turgenv, but there is only source I can find which says Caroline Philippine Élisabeth Bertin was Lagardie and that source does not seem trustworthy. So if the Kaye manuscript is the source of the attribution, then it could possibly be wrong. But if it isn’t then I have just wasted an afternoon.

Highlights include: Put You In Your Place, The Campfire Song, The Oracle, Good Kid, Killer Quest!, Lost!, My Grand Plan, Drive, DOA, Son of Poseidon, The Last Day of Summer, and Bring on the Monster. Several of the songs are incomplete, and there are some other scenes as well. The Lion King - Broadway - November 16, 1997 FORMAT:  VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Jason Raize (Simba), John Vickery (Scar), Heather Headley (Nala), Tsidii Le Loka (Rafiki), Max Casella (Timon), Tom Alan Robbins (Pumbaa), Geoff Hoyle (Zazu), Stanley Wayne Mathis (Banzai), Kevin Cahoon (Ed) NOTES: Filmed RIGHT after opening night on Broadway when the show was still fresh. Shot from one of the boxes, resulting in an extreme angle (think near-perpendicular) so you can see into the wings and watch the actors slacking. Sound is great and it’s very well shot for a vid of its age though there is a touch of gen loss. Circle of Life is near perfect despite a little bit of washout. The Lion King - National Tour - June 5, 2010 FORMAT:  VOB (no smalls) (SD) CAST: Andre Jackson (Simba), Brent Harris (Scar), Frank Wright II (u/s Mufasa), Marja Harmon (Nala), Phindile Mkhize (Rafiki), Jered Tanner (u/s Pumbaa), Sophia Stephens (u/s Shenzi), Jerome Stephens Jr (Young Simba), Jamariana Tribble (Young Nala) NOTES: A couple of blackouts during Circle of Life and first couple of minutes of act two, otherwise nice capture. The first 11 minutes after the overture are mostly blackouts due to late comers, after that no real problems. Bret did a nice job as understudy. Sierra and Sherie still rock with much greatness! Also includes the Part of Your World performance and interview on The View. A- Little Shop of Horrors - Encores! Off-Center - July 2, 2015 (Matinee) (SunsetBlvd79's master) FORMAT:  VOB (no smalls) (SD) CAST: Jake Gyllenhaal (Seymour), Ellen Greene (Audrey), Joe Grifasi (Mushnik), Taran Killam (Orin), Eddie Cooper (Audrey II), Marva Hicks (Crystal), Ramona Keller (Ronnette), Tracy Nicole Chapman (Chiffon) NOTES: Beautiful HD capture of the Encores Summer Series. Ellen and Jake were perfection and this was the 2015 show that was not to be missed! There is some drifting in Act One, but it isn’t as prevalent in Act Two. There are a lot of obstructions, but I was (mostly) able to film around them. The only part that was really blocked was Somewhere That’s Green. Somewhere That’s Green (Reprise) is the only majorly whitewashed part, but other than that it’s not too much of an issue. Overall, it’s a pretty decent capture of the show, considering it’s my first video master. Little Women - Broadway - December 11, 2004 (Preview) FORMAT:  VOB (no smalls) (SD) CAST: Sutton Foster (Jo), Danny Gurwin (Laurie), Megan McGinnis (Beth), Jenny Powers (Meg), Amy McAlexander (Amy), Maureen McGovern (Marmee), Janet Carroll (Aunt March), John Hickok (Professor Bhaer), Robert Stattel (Mr. Laurence), Jim Weitzer (Mr. Brooke) NOTES: Excellent video capture of the show! Mrs Russell among the flowers in the garden of Goulphar, Belle-Île (1907), by John Russell
Russell married Marianna Mattiocco in 1888.
Writing in the Sydney Morning Herald, author Sarah Turnbull reveals that Russell expressed his devotion to his Italian wife in a letter to his friend, the Australian painter Tom Roberts: “She is more than I could hope for and much more than I deserve.” Mattiocco died in 1908, whereupon a grief-stricken Russell destroyed hundreds of his paintings.
