Trivia - Kaede and Shion's Parents

The family life of Kaede, Ayaka, and Shion is something I've been considering for a while and recently solidified with their parents. I'm pretty happy with what I came up with in the end and I hope you like it as well.

Warnings: Past character death and illness.

Reina Shinaki (Played by Maki Sakai)

Her kindness is a trait that's been passed down to both her daughters.

The kanji of her name (麗永) means 'beautiful eternity'.

She is played by Keiko Kitagawa in flashbacks.

She had fallen ill due to old age, leading Kaede to support her in any way she can.

Kazuha Shinaki (Played by Takayuki Yamada)

He and Reina are both very protective of Kaede, especially after Ayaka's death, but are also loving and caring to both their daughters.

The kanji of his name (和葉) means 'harmony leaf'.

He had passed away prior to the start of the series.

He often appears in flashbacks and is supportive of his daughters.

Mizuki Akamatsu (Played by Yuki Sakurai)

She and Yuuki cherish Shion deeply, who is their only child.

The kanji of her name (望) means 'hope'.

She inspired Shion's love for fairytale endings of true love and happily ever afters.

She is a gardener who tries her best to help Kaede's mother Reina, especially after she fell ill while still supporting her daughter.

Yuuki Akamatsu (Played by Sho Aoyagi)

Shion has vivid memories of her childhood and how much she loved her family as much as he and Mizuki loved her.

The kanji of his name (優希) means 'gentle hope'.

He helped Shion feel like a princess who'll find true love one day.

He works at a local children's hospital and tries his best to juggle work and spending time with his daughter.

As someone who’s never played a lick of the game, what makes this character the perfect choice as an opponent for Kuripa?

//Kuripa does actually have some better matchups in terms of both connections and fairness, but Mizuki has always been my personal most wanted for him.

//When he eventually does get his episode in Season 2, she will be on his list, but no one should feel inclined to pick her for my sake.

//If you haven’t played AI: the Somnium Files or NirvanA Initiative, then beware of some key spoilers

//The main reasons are:

They are both Spike Chunsoft protagonists (Yes, Kuripa is a fanmade character, but he is a fanmade protagonist in a Chunsoft franchise)

They are both the sidekicks/closest companion of the protagonist of the first game in their series, and they would do anything for them despite how much they butt heads on many issues (Kaname Date for Mizuki and Makoto Naegi for Kuripa.)

Said protagonist also serves as a father figure for them (Date adopted Mizuki after the events of the first game, and Makoto commonly acts like a dad to Kuripa, sometimes to his chagrin)

Both work/worked for the most influential law enforcement organisation of their respective universes (The Advanced Brain Investigation Squad, or A.B.I.S for Mizuki, and the Future Foundation, or F.F for Kuripa)

Both characters are ABSURDLY physically strong, and are known for being able to withstand insane degrees of damage, while also hitting back like armoured trucks.

Both characters often resort to physical violence to achieve their goals, which raises questions about their moral standpoints. Their strength and combat skills, while impressive, are sometimes used in ways that blur the lines between self-defense and excessive force.

Despite this, both have been shown to be very intelligent and even cunning when the situation calls for it.

Both of them have a very “The ends justifies the means” personalities that sometimes prevents their closest allies from trusting them wholeheartedly.

Both of them have very complicated backstories that are shrouded in mystery, and the origins of their strength have both been revealed to be science-based. (Kuripa revealed that he received unhealthy amounts of strength enhancing drugs as a child in an attempt to cure his CIPA disease, which failed and inadvertently made him superhuman; and Mizuki is revealed to be a clone of Mizuki Kuranushi/Bibi, who’s genetic DNA was modified at Horadori Institute of Genetics to give her superhuman abilities.)

Both characters watched their only family die right in front of them at the hands of a serial killer (Kuripa’s sister Kotoko, and Mizuki’s original adopted parents, Shouko and Renju)

Both characters also watched one of their closest allies sacrifice themselves, but it later turned out to be a fake out (Date and Mukuro).

In their respective home game/series, both characters are accompanied by a fellow protagonist who parallels their hardy natures in exchange for being more quiet and reserved. (Kuruto Ryuki and Uchui Porosen)

Both characters have a close relationship with a character voiced by Erika Harlacher (Aiba and Kaede Akamatsu)

Both look up to a mysterious and troubled character like an older sister (Mizuki Kuranushi/Bibi and Mukuro Ikusaba)

Both fight using unconventional weapons for modern society (Mizuki had a cybernetic upgraded steel pipe and Kuripa has a sword.)

Kaede: Yes, please. It's my final wish.

Shuichi: I understand... I'll end all of this.

*Shuichi has tears in his eyes, and he takes a deep breath in before beginning to summarize the case.*

Shuichi: The time limit added to this killing game triggered the crime. After the announcement, some of decided to form groups to plan our next move. I had my own plan to find the mastermind, but someone offered to help me... And with that, the culprit and I set up hidden cameras in the library to expose the mastermind. There was a hidden door in the library that showed signs of use. We deduced that the mastermind would return there, to let Monokuma out.

Shuichi: The next day, we asked Miu if she could modify some cameras for our trap. And after that, three more people, Bunny, Haruki and Mizuki, joined the cause as well. So the three of them, along with the two of us, went to the warehouse to gather the necessary materials. But the culprit found something else there--the murder weapon. That's right. The shot put ball. They put the cameras as well as the shot in their backpack. Then, on the day the time limit would expire, the day of the murder, the culprit, along with the rest of our group, collected the modified cameras from Miu and exited the library.

Shuichi: Once there, we searched the room for ideal locations to place the cameras. But even then, the culprit was preparing the murder. They began by removing the vent grate, and laid it inside the air duct. Then they moved the pile of books on top of the bookcase, pretending to organize them. After that, they placed open encyclopedias on the final bookcase. It appeared innocuous enough, but it was actually a path for the murder weapon! The culprit also tampered with the hidden camera linked to the security sensor. I didn't even notice their trick.

Shuichi: After the cameras were set, the culprit and I climbed the stairs to the first floor classroom. During the stakeout, we saw Kaito and six others go down to the basement. After watching that group go to the Game Room, I returned to the classroom. With about one hour remaining, the security receiver I was holding went off. I assumed it was the mastermind, so I ran out of the classroom and to the library. Looking back on it now... that was the last chance I had to stop the murder. After we left, the culprit took the shot put ball out of their backpack and rolled it into the classroom vent. Rantaro had moved the bookcase, triggering the receiver. The modified camera took a picture of Rantaro with the flash on, and he moved closer to inspect the camera, which lured Rantaro right into the murder weapon's path. But the promotional video was playing, which masked the sound of the ball rolling. It then fell onto Rantaro's head, killing him instantly.

Reina Shinaki - Kaede and Ayaka's mother. Her kindness is a trait that’s been passed down to both her daughters. She had fallen ill due to old age, leading Kaede to support her in any way she can. She is played by Maki Sakai and by Keiko Kitagawa in flashbacks.

Kazuha Shinaki - Kaede and Ayaka's father. He and Reina are both very protective of Kaede, especially after Ayaka's death, but are also loving and caring to both their daughters. He passed away prior to the start of the series but often appears in flashbacks and is shown to be supportive of his daughters. He is played by Takayuki Yamada.

Yuuki Akamatsu - Shion's father. She has vivid memories of her childhood and how much she loved her family as much as he and Mizuki loved her. He helped Shion feel like a princess who'll find true love one day and works at a local children's hospital and tries his best to juggle work and spending time with his daughter. He is played by Sho Aoyagi.

Mizuki Akamatsu - Shion's mother. She and Yuuki cherish Shion deeply, who is their only child. She inspired her daughter's love for fairytale endings of true love and happily ever afters and is a gardener who tries her best to help Reina, especially after she fell ill while still supporting her daughter. She is played by Yuki Sakurai.
