Day 4: Favorite Opening?

Another difficult question: when I think of anime openings I can't just think of the song itself but how it's used and how the subsequent animation tied to it looks. And due to that, my brain goes into nerd mode and starts dissecting the video instead of solely focusing on the music. Which makes a hassle when the openings to compare all do something really nice in the visual department compared to each other. That said, I'm gonna have to go with the first opening, Mixed Nuts by Hige Dandism

From a visual design perspective, it's not necessarily the most technically impressive nor experimental out of the whole collection so far: The second opening Souvenir has an absolutely gorgeous use of lighting and compositing to bring the warm autum color palette to life(as well as having some of the most heart warming shots over the other two) that paint a touching picture of the fleeting nature of happiness, while the third opening Kura Kura has the kind of visual dynamism only someone like Masaki Yuasa could bring to the table for an opening that exudes wacky energy. But Mixed Nuts just hits so many of my favorite visual stylings that those achievements of the other openings can't quite top it. Between the mixture of the chidlren book illustration aesthetics of the first half(with a healthy dose of UPA thrown in that fits the faux vintage setting of the story like a glove), to the dynamic shifts in colors that simultaneously evoke the stylish flair of Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, the pop art of the Persona series and the panache of Lupin IIIrd, it just communicates a lot of different facets of the show in a way that also manages to pay homage to some of it's Japanese precedesors in manga/anime related spy fiction. And from a musical perspective? I could really summarize it by simply saying I'm very partial to jazz. Not only is it a very fitting genre to the spy genre, but the general peppy energy of the OP really gets you going. If there's a negative side to this opening is that, understandably, doesn't quite capture the tonal changes you see later in the series. It also doesn't feature Bond and leaving the dog out of the family picture doesn't feel right. Oh well, nothing in this world is perfect.
