COBRADILE!! this was probably the most fun card to make out of all of them. also probably the prettiest card imo!!! writeup below!!

sniper and touch of death! pretty deadly combo. literally. you can just kill any card you please from any spot on the board. i was DEAD SET on giving her the sniper sigil. it just felt right.

GEMMIFICATION YIPEEE! this is a mechanic from act 3! but mox cards appear in act 2 as well. in base game inscryption, you need to have specific gem vessels on the field in order to activate the buffs (ruby for power, emerald for health, and sapphire for cost) but! mox cards and gem vessels aren’t really. in kaycee’s mod. and it would be super clunky to add them for a single card! so all you have to do is sacrifice a card’s sigils onto her. is this a little broken? maybe. but this is inscryption, literally everything is broken lol

^expanding on this, it still kinda fits lorewise? ka buans do compress their ashes into diamonds after all. let’s say that they compressed the creature into a diamond or something and that’s what’s powering her, idk

ok i’ll stop talking about the mox thing after this. both sif and odile were given mechanics from the other scrybes! siffrin requires bone tokens (grimmora) and odile has mox (magnificus). no sorry there’s nothing for p03. they don’t have computers in the isat world i think. i’m pretty sure.

initially i wanted to make her a stork or an ibis, but. all avian cards have the airborne sigil. which makes their attacks hit the opponent directly instead of their creatures. and that defeats the entire purpose of sniper. so she gets to be a spitting cobra! i think it’s more fun this way anyways. more fun shapes.

also this kinda spoils bonnie’s card a little but!! i put thought into the tribes too!!! the vaugardians (mirabelle, isabeau, and bonnie) are all from the hooved tribe! odile is a reptile and sif is tribeless because they’re outsiders. teehee.

ok patch time. she gets double strike, which makes her attack twice (as the name implies). i chose this in reference to memory of first strike (it just reminds me of it? idk) and also because it synergizes with sniper! you get to oneshot TWO cards in one turn! good god! odile really is merciless

that’s everything important about this card! i know this is long as hell but! that’s what happens when you introduce an entire new mechanic. i guess. anyways alt card art!!!

He gasps dramatically holding his free hand to his forehead. “Oh what an awful fate, the worst kind imaginable, getting the prettiest kind of nail polish known to man!”

She kicks him slightly. “Now you owe me two nail polishes!”

“Oh how AWFUL!”

“Hey Loop.”

“Yes Housemaiden?”

“It’s Mirabelle-but I have a question, it’s ok with you.”

They tense ever so slightly. “Well, depends on what it is. So ask and I’ll see if I shall grace you with my divine knowledge.”

“How do you have so much hair?”

They just pause cause how do you answer that, Odile interrupts. “Mirabelle you can’t just ask someone why they have so much hair.”

Bonnie joins in on the light teasing. “Yeah Belle you can’t just ask someone that!”

“Oh! Oh, I’m sorry I didn’t that was a sensitive topic…”

Odile looks up from her book. “We’re just teasing, Asking someone about their hair quantity isn’t some horrible offense.”

“Wait it isn’t?”

“No it isn’t Boniface.”

“Then why do you have so much hair?”

She cackles in response; calming down she responds. “Heh- that’s because I’ve spent years growing my hair out. You could have my amount of hair if you spend the next few years growing yours out and taking good care of it. I’m sure your sister could help with that.”

“Hmmm, nah that’s too much work.”

“True that!” Loop cuts back in.

This is honestly one of her favourite games, just for the family fun and chaos it brings

Is usually the one to initiate the game

Has the best aim when it comes to green shells

Will go out of her way to stop a blue shell from hitting Mirabel

Plays as any of Bowser’s children, just cycles through them on rotation

Usually fourth or fifth

She and Isabela are in their own internal competition, given how close they are in skill

She is just a little bit better and can afford to even get a bit competitive with Dolores too

Her favourite course is Athens Dash

Probably spends a lot of time looking at the scenery in races, it’s the architect in her

Camilo:

He’s really bad at it

Constantly crashes into walls or falls off the edge

Is really slow, the others have to wait ages for him to finish

Has definitely had friends over and shown them the trophies Mirabel has gotten and claimed them as his own

Whether or not his friends actually believe him is up for debate

Plays as Tanooki Mario because he thinks it’s cool

Usually places eleventh or twelfth

Makes a big song and dance out of it if he places any higher, not that he ever get more than tenth at best

His favourite course is Cheep Cheep Beach

Like the one video game she can play

She is insanely good at it, nobody knows how or why, she just is

And nobody was more surprised than she was when she placed second in her first race ever, while the others were dead last

Is probably the only one who knows how to drift and can do it successfully

Is also an excellent shot when getting people out of her way

Plays as Rosalina (it’s the closest to teal)

Usually places first or second

She can be a little very smug about it

Her favourite course is N64 Rainbow Road

She regards it as the prettiest of the many rainbow road variants and it’s the only one she likes to race on

Though, when you win as often as she does, the track doesn’t really matter, does it?

Antonio:

He isn’t too interested in racing, he just likes playing with all together with his cousins and siblings

Is probably the only one playing for fun

He also prefers the mini games as oppose to the actual races

Mirabel probably spends time teaching him how to drive better

Plays as Yoshi, but changes the colour each time

Usually places around sixth or seventh

Which he is always really happy with and the others all encourage him

Anyway. I think the word “plump” is quite charming. Like, it has a certain je na sais quoi to it. It’s linguistically cute to me.

A Jolly Holiday (WDTAJN - Song)

Finally have them all done! Here’s my last entry for @wdtajn! The song? Jolly Holiday from Mary Poppins!

(So a bit of context: I made a boyfriend for Bruno. His name is Matias, he’s an inventor who showed up in the Encanto after the events of the movie. His inventions are unpredictable, to say the least. They don’t always work and often end with an explosion. Think Dr. Doofenshmirtz, but if his parents were actually supportive and loving. He was kicked out of his hometown when his parents died, and has been hopping from town to town since. Until he ended up in the Encanto.)

PS. he also owns a grey cat named Alegria ^u^

Bruno spends an extra hour in the bathroom this morning, washing his hair and shaving as much as he can. Thirty minutes are spent on teeth alone. He throws on his prettiest ruana (with extra embroidery by Mirabel) over a new green and white striped shirt and purple pants. A corsage tucked over his heart, he dashes downstairs.

His cheerful presence is not lost on the family, who watch him intently.

“Wonder what’s got him all cleaned up,” Camilo says.

“Matias is coming over,” Isabela answers as she walks out. Camilo blanches.

“Not with a new machine, right?” he whispers to his sister. Dolores simply stares at him.

“Not with a new machine, right?” Camilo squeaks.

Dolores rolls her eyes and strains her head to listen. “It’s definitely not his typical machine… it does sound awfully loud. Sort of like… instruments crashing together.” Camilo weakly whimpers.

“Don’t worry, Papá and I have been teaching him to play,” Mirabel says as she passes.

“Play?!”

Mirabel ignores her primo and runs out. “I’m going for a walk, see ya!”

Bruno picks up a small parcel wrapped up in a custom wrapping paper with little drawn gears shaped like hearts on them. He approaches his sobrinos and twirls. 

“How do I look?”

“Better than usual,” Camilo admits. “I can’t even smell your breath from here.”

“You look muy guapo,” Dolores says. “What’s the occasion?”

“It’s our anniversary today!” Bruno squeals. “A whole year! I can’t wait to show Matias my gift-”

Bang! Crash! Bang! Crash! True to what Dolores said, whatever invention Matias has brought this time, it’s going to be a very musical, albeit noisy one.

“That’s definitely not what I had in mind when he said he would surprise me today,” Bruno says. “Camilo, what do you see out there?”

Camilo peers out the window. Matias has put on a lovely suit, no doubt tailored by Agustín. His black dreadlocks have been tied up into a bun. However, his silver vest and new purple shirt hide underneath a shield of musical instruments. A horn hangs across his chest, a trumpet is strapped to his chest, an accordion is fastened to his belt, and on his back is a large bass drum, with crash cymbals on top of it. When he moves, a mallet bangs on the drum and the cymbals crash together. Mirabel stands beside him, trying to suppress her amused smile.

Camilo turns back to Bruno. “Do you remember that movie we watched together? The one with the magical nanny?”

Bruno nods. “Yeah?”

“That’s your surprise-”

Bruno dashes out before Camilo can finish his sentence.

“Good morning, hermoso! Happy anniversary!” Matias yells over his instruments banging together.

“Hey Matias! I heard you were coming,” Bruno says. “Literally. What are you wearing? What is all this?”

The inventor twirls around. “Do you like it? I thought I’d take a page out of the moving picture you showed us the other day.” He picks up the accordion and begins to play.

“You didn’t strike me as an accordion player,” Bruno admits as he listens to Matias. He’s actually holding the instrument correctly! And not butchering any notes! It’s a miracle!

“That’s because I’m not. Mirabel had to teach me,” Matias admits. 

“I did offer to play with him, but he wanted to do the whole act,” Mirabel adds.

“I’m dating an actual soap opera star. I need to have some credibility to my name,” Matias says. He takes a deep breath and begins to sing.

“Shut up and please let me do this.”

“You have too much faith in me, mi vida,” Bruno says with a laugh.

When the day is gray and you feel low

The sky suddenly darkens before the sun breaks through once more.

Bruno makes the sun shine bright!

Bruno spies Pepa peeking out from behind a tree. How many Madrigals did Matias plan this with?!

Oh, happiness is blooming all around him,

The daffodils are smiling at the dove

Right on cue, daffodil petals shower Bruno. He catches Isabela high–fiving his sister.

When Bruno holds your hand

You feel so grand

Your heart starts beating like a big brass band!

Matias jumps to the beat, the instruments a rhythmic discord. Mirabel winces, but Bruno laughs.

No wonder that it's Bruno that we love!

Matias grabs Bruno’s hand and pulls him through the town. Isabela showers flowers in their direction and Antonio stands by a fence with animals lined up. Matias joins them.

“We practiced on this all week! Take it away guys!”

“Baaaaa!” an older ram sings. Interesting.

“Baa! Baa!” a trio of lambs respond.

A horse whinnies the next part, followed by a cow mooing. Are the animals supposed to sing along? Bruno raises an eyebrow.

“You know this part sounded better in my head,” Matias admits. Bruno snorts. “Antonio said they sounded like a choir.”

“They do!” Antonio exclaims.

Donkeys bray the next line, and a large pig finishes the verse with two loud snorts. Mirabel and Antonio sing the translation, hoping to save the last verse of the song.

Bruno applauds the “musician” and the animals (who honestly did their best). “Asombroso! Wonderful playing!”

Matias attempts to bow, the accordion pushing into his stomach. “Note to self: it’s hard to bend over when you have instruments strapped to you.”

“Need help getting all that off?” Bruno asks, gently knocking on the drum.

“Yes, actually, the local band needs all of these back before their next gig.”

Bruno freezes. “Seriously? How did you even get them to give you these instruments?”

“Your sobrina is a very persistent young lady,” Matias answers, nodding to Mirabel. She winks.

“He’s my best pupil! I’ve never seen anyone learn the accordion so quickly before,” Mirabel says. “Other than me, of course.”

“Your whole family is quite musical, so I thought it would be smart if I joined in,” Matias explains.

Bruno’s eyes widen. “Oh! I’m actually not that musical myself, you didn’t have to go through all that trouble.”

“Really? I always took you for a pianist, especially with those hands of yours.”

Bruno’s cheeks burn hotter than the sun. He shoves Matias playfully. “Come on, let’s get these instruments off you. That way I can show you the gift I got you…”

If Camilo hears the discordant cymbal crashing as he walks through town, he does not acknowledge it. He doesn’t hear the drum occasionally going thump. And he certainly doesn’t hear the rhythmic squeezing of a dying accordion squashed between two people. No. He won’t acknowledge the sound of the One (well, Two) Man Band!

Matias holds up his new notebook, running his hands over the pretty cover. Illustrated rats play with kittens, no doubt inspired by Alegria, Matias’ grey cat. “This is a wonderful gift! I definitely needed a new sketchbook! You have no idea how many new ideas I’ve got.”

“The last one looked like it was bursting at the seams. And look-” Bruno flips through the pages. Little sketches of cats appear, along with encouraging messages in Bruno’s handwriting. Matias freezes.

“My writing looks more like chicken scratches, so I hope you can actually read them,” Bruno rambles. “I did try looking for inspirational quotes from the future… but I don’t think you’d get any references, so I just stuck to basic stuff. Cheesy, right?” He stops when he sees Matias wiping away tears. Bruno winces.

“It’s bad, isn’t it? You can always rip those out or draw over them or-”

“My first notebook was a lot like this. Full of little motivational quotes written by my parents.” That catches Bruno off guard. In all their time together, Matias had never really mentioned his own family. Hell, he even arrived in Encanto alone!

“I think it’s still in my green toolbox. I always keep the most important stuff in that toolbox,” Matias says.

Bruno moves closer to Matias, motioning him to talk. From what he knows from the small tidbits Matias has told him, the inventor hopped from town to town, never settling in one place. He doesn’t think Matias has ever lived in a town for a whole year.

“After my first few ‘village incidents’, I started to keep all my precious things, stuff I didn’t want to lose, in that toolbox. Just in case I ever needed to get out of town quickly. I didn’t need to worry about a heavy suitcase.”

Bruno fidgets with his ruana, struggling to think up any comforting words. He finally decides to just put his hand on Matias’.

Matias turns to Bruno, smile slowly returning. He grasps Bruno’s hands. “But this time, I… I think I want to stay. I’ve never felt so welcome here! Everyone is so welcoming and encouraging. I’ve never felt more at home! So, if you’ll allow it, I want to live in Encanto permanently.”

No sooner has Matias finished his sentence does Bruno shower him with kisses. Matias chuckles. “Is that a yes?”

“Of course! You’ll always have a home here!”

Encantober 2023 Day 23: Roots

Isabela has had a passion for gardening since she was very small. Before her gift ceremony, she would watch her mother and aunt spend their summer days in the backyard growing lots of pretty flowers together, and the then-toddler would ask them if she could help them. Julieta and Pepa would always agree and after they were finished, Isabela would alway pick the prettiest flower in the garden and keep it in a little vase in the nursery.

As she got older, and realized she could grow other types of plants, she wanted to turn Casita’s backyard into a spectacle with many different types of plants that the village could see and admire. Since they spent their years admiring her flowers, she wanted them to admire her other plants too.

Isabela was working on her garden when Dolores walked outside and noticed her. Both of their birthdays were coming up soon, so she might have thought Isabela wanted to grow some extra special plants for both of them. Isabela turned around to see her cousin near the back door of Casita.

“Hola, Dolores! How are you doing?” she asked.

“I’m doing alright, I just wanted to see what you were up to.”

“I’m also doing alright; I was just making a special garden for the two of us since our birthdays were coming up soon. Do you want to see some of the plants I decided to plant this year?”

“Sure, prima; I would love to see them.”

Isabela led Dolores over to what she was working on when she came outside. She showed her a small cactus that she just put in the ground. Dolores kneeled down to look at the cactus she was about to grow. It was still small, but Isabela just made it and put it in the ground.

“I just made this one this morning. I loved it so much that I wanted it to grow naturally, so I decided to keep it in the backyard for it to grow for our birthdays.”

Dolores sat down to examine the cactus. “Did you take the cactus from its roots to plant it here?”

“Not exactly; while I created the plant, I wanted to create its roots too, so that way, it will grow naturally in time for our birthdays.”

Isabela sat next to Dolores to admire the cactus she created. While it was still small since she just created it, she wanted to see how much it was going to change once Dolores’s birthday came around. She planned on showing the rest of the family in the middle of the month when they celebrate both of their birthdays together.

“Do you want to come inside? I think mami’s almost finished with dinner,” Isabela said.

“Sure, I can’t wait to see how the cactus will grow.”

Several weeks have past, and once the day the family celebrated Isabela’s and Dolores’s birthdays came, Isabela looked out the window near Casita’s backyard to see that her cactus grew much more than it did when she first planted it. She did everything she could to make sure her cactus grew naturally throughout the weeks. It looked like it was finally paying off! She could not wait to show it to the rest of the family.

That afternoon, after the family had lunch together, Isabela and Dolores led the family to the backyard. They wanted to make the cactus as much of a surprise as possible, so they made sure none of the family went into the backyard except for the two of them to water the cactus regularly and check up on it.

“Does this have something to do with why you never let us in the backyard for the last few weeks?” Mirabel asked.

“It is, and it’s very special; it’s something that Dolores and I’ve been working on for those few weeks.”

The entire Madrigal family walked into the backyard to see that the tiny little cactus grew into a bigger cactus with beautiful flowers all over it. The rest of the family opened their mouths in awe to notice how much the cactus grew.

“Isabela, did you make this?” Luisa asked.

“I did, but only when it was small a couple of weeks ago. I wanted to show you all that I could grow plants naturally without using my gift, so I decided to create a little cactus and grow it myself. Do you like it?”

“Mi vida, this is one of the best plants I’ve ever seen you grow, and you only used your gift by just creating the small cactus,” Alma explained.

“I also created the roots too. I’ve noticed that none of my plants I ever created had roots because they didn’t have to grow naturally. But since I wanted this one to grow naturally for my and Dolores’s birthday, I decided to do so.”

The family crowded around the cactus in a circle and sat down to admire its growth throughout the weeks. They could not believe that Isabela grew that from scratch. Although Julieta and Pepa expected it, since they used to let Isabela help them with gardening when she was little, the rest of the family was shocked.

“I knew you would one day grow a plant naturally. Even before your gift ceremony, you were such an amazing help to us with our garden,” Julieta explained.

“And we knew you would be able to grow an amazing plant of your own naturally one day,” Pepa added.

“Gracias, Mami, Tia, I worked so hard on this cactus and Dolores got to see it since it was for her birthday too, so I let her help me.”

“Did you think I did a good job too?” Dolores asked.

“You did an amazing job,” Alma replied.

Isabela and Dolores hugged each other, and then their mothers and grandmother for the compliments they got from them. They knew they would have the best birthday ever together this year because they made something they were very proud of.
