🐋Daily Cetacean Fact:🐋
Minke Whale: The common minke whale is the smallest baleen whale in North American waters. The scientific names for minke whales translate to: "winged whale," (Balaenoptera) "sharp snout" (acutorostrata). They received their common name from a Norwegian novice whaling spotter named Meincke, who supposedly mistook a minke whale for a blue whale.

When you look into my eye human, what do you see?
Do you see a friendly curious gentle creature exploring her environment? Something intelligent and alive?
Do you see an anxious and nervous animal, not for what you have done, but for others of your kind? Wary what you might do?
Do you see a soul? Do you see beauty in her eye? A shared moment as we look to each other?
Do you see nothing? It is just an animal - unfeeling, unthinking. Is this moment just one for you?
Do you see simply resources? A part of the natural world granted to you by your god to exploit. Something for which no consideration is necessary?
Do you see yourself reflected in my eye?
What do you see human?

This is one of my favourite minke pictures. Just the angle they look so silly.
Our of curiousity what are the bumps/divots on the very tip of the jaw?
I cannot send it to you via inbox but there is also a seinfeld theme with minke whale sounds on youtube. I absolutely recommend it for a good laugh.
Hope you feel well soon!
Oh that is a good minke whale angle. They are so pancake-faced from the front haha.
The bumps on the chin are hair follicles! Like all cetaceans, minkes too have some remnant hairs in the forms of whiskers. I remember reading an article that the sensitivity in their chin joint is very important for Fin whales to judge the gape/position of their mouth. Perhaps these sensory hairs here can also help a (minke) whale judge their feeding gulp?
Haha and that video on youtube is amazing. Someone went through a lot of trouble for that joke.
Thank you for your message, means a lot ;w; ♥

Everyone knows and loves the sweet songs of the humpback whale, but not many have heard the songs of other baleen whales. I wanted to share three of my favourites today:
First up we've got the bowhead whale: The jazz-like sounds of bowhead whales (youtube.com) (I don't know if jazz-like is an entirely accurate descriptor. One of these whales sounds like a heavy piece of metal getting dragged across a concrete floor).
Next up, the understated song of the right whale: Right Whale Underwater Sounds (youtube.com). While they lack the vocal range of a humpback, the right whale vocalizations have a similar peaceful, melodic sound to them.
Finally, scientists were perplexed for years by a number of strange underwater noises sounding remarkably like waterfowl. Known as the "bio-duck", this phenomenon was found to be caused by Antarctic minke whales: Balaenoptera bonaerensis "bio duck" (youtube.com). Minkes make a range of interesting noises including pops, trills, and a boinging noise like a spring!

WIP - sneak peak at the feature item for Phase 2 of the Coral Kingdom. I’m still tinkering with the details and orientation of the skeletal segments (we’ll see if I can get the rib cage flipped to sync with the rest of it in the final build).
The skull is based on a baleen whale, although this skeleton is too small to be a big one, so it’s inspired by the smaller minke whale instead. When I build the whale fall into the scene it will have lots of animals and plants reaping the benefits of the whale’s decomposition.
When I finish the next phase I’ll post the final version!

Updated drawing of myself based on my own body. I know a bit more of my head angle and how thick the material can be. I also accounted for that in the time prepping to return to the water and while in the water, I will not maintain my current weight which means things will fit differently. These changes mean the suit will be a fair bit smaller 2,85-3 meters or so (I admit I would really like to be in that 3-3,5 meter range I percieve myself). It also means an estimation of my weight is a fair bit lighter by around 60 kilograms which really isn't bad as that should increase my own manuvuerability and ability. With my being a littler smaller though, my flippers do look to me just a bit too big even and they are further back on my body. I am not sure if I will modify my head geometry to try to reproportion things or if thatll just slowly get wierder (though I may slide the blowhole back some just for a shorter breathing tube).
I also added some surface colour things like the transition begween my white and dark patches and a couple of the white shoots we sometimes have. Still I tuink I am a pretty whale.

Trick or Treat!
I couldnt find a costume that fit. Please do not eat me.
(I hope you like the drawing)
Aaaaa this is adorable!! I so loved your drawing, and still do. Makes me smile every time :D Thank you for your participation. For you of course also a treat (and it won't be yourself, lol). I thought I'd try my hand at some cetacean photo studies for these trick or treat asks! Might move things a bit along and I want to practice more at environments. Not sure how long this trend will last lol but for now here's a fellow minke!
Reference is this beautiful photo from inaturalist, shared under de CC-BY-NC license. I loved the moody atmosphere and the reflection on the surface. Did this one in about 30-40 minutes so it's pretty rough but I do like the result. I hope you like it too!

I went whale watching for the first time this season and saw about 50 Atlantic white sides dolphins, 70 seals, 1 fin whale, 5 minke whales, and 7 humpback whales.
I have seen a fin whale once before but it was pretty far and only for a second. So it was very cool to be able to see this one so well. Today I also learned fin whales are one of the only asymmetrical vertebrate species. "Fin whales have distinctive coloration—black or dark brownish-gray on the back and sides and white on the underside. Head coloring is asymmetrical—dark on the left side of the lower jaw, white on the right-side lower jaw, and the reverse on the tongue."
So all in all it was a really fun day.
