Sooooo... How do you feel about the season 5?

In short? Mid. 6-6.5/10.

In long…?

A severely rushed season that bit off way more than it could chew. A season that had the characters pull powers from their asses more frequently than ever before. A season that had shitty “dramatic” moments for the sake of having dramatic moments. A season that lampshades issues instead of fixing them. A season with so, so much wasted potential.

It basically boils down: everything they wanted to do COULD have been good, but they just didn’t have the time.

I’ll go into some varied details below. I’d also like to make clear- I’ll be tagging all of my Season Five Posts with “Lego Monkie Kid Season 5” and “LMK Spoilers” until August 1st. Then the gloves are coming off and I’ll stop tagging them.

(I still liked the season, for what it’s worth- and you can watch it in full here! I’ve got some drafts and bots cooking as we speak!)

This was a cute send-off to Flying Bark! It was nice of them to acknowledge, in some way, everything that those dears did for the show- because Lego Monkie Kid would NOT be where it is without them.

Significantly less cute-

The absolute kick in the fucking face that constantly superimposing old footage over newer, worse footage is.

You don’t want us to be constantly reminded of the animation downgrade- that’s the literal last thing that anyone wants. Why would you constantly remind us that it used to be better?

What the fuck does this accomplish? Okay, let’s make comparisons, cause that’s the only thing that can result from pulling this shit-

This is what happens when you constantly reference the older, superior content.

PEOPLE CONSTANTLY NOTICE THAT YOUR CONTENT IS WORSE.

Also, why is it so saturated? How do you make a Lego Minifigure look like he has jaundice?

It’s just a bad look to constantly reference content you can’t live up to. I’m hoping they’ll just recreate old content instead of sloppily pasting it into the background of the show- it’ll be less jarring.

Uh, I fucking called it! Nuwa is not MK’s “loving though bereft mommy”! Which I had been guessing ever since the Celestial Pagoda leaked, actually-

I mean, come on. He’s literally stealing the stones away from her as she reaches to take them back.

And the Season confirmed it! Nuwa might’ve be been MK’s creator, but she certainly wasn’t his momma.

And you know how the series subtlety clues you in to how little she cares about her “son”?

Nuwa didn’t give him a name. She had hundreds, maybe thousands of years to think on it- but no. No name.

We mortals name our pets, our vehicles, our art. We love them enough to bestow monikers.

Nuwa didn’t even bother to name her own sapient mortal creation.

But when he makes a move against her, does something she doesn’t want, takes destiny into his own hands?

She calls out to him with one word- not “son”. Not “MK”.

Nuwa angrily calls him “mortal”.

Becuase that’s all he ever was to her, really. A mortal pawn. A handmade puppet.

Someone designed to fulfill a sacrifice. Even though her intentions were good, MK’s sole purpose by her hand was to shoulder the weight of the world like a good little hero.

So… a potential villain in the making?

Lampshading the fact that you’re doing the “macguffin hunt” again does not excuse doing the “macguffin hunt” again.

Lampshading the “apocalypse after apocalypse” plots doesn’t make them any less exhausting.

Lampshading Macaque’s lack of narrative consequences does not undo the awkward and weak redemption arc.

They changed Mei “no longer wielding” the Samadhi fire, I guess.

Ignore that she never displayed a hint of concern or sorrow over “losing it” because now she’s sad and worried (after backlash from the fans over her losing it) about losing it.

Like, Subodhi knows so much about the world and the universe that he’s aware of his existence in the ink scroll- but he gets Mei not having an interplanetary level threat inside her wrong?

I smell a retcon.

Macaque’s redemption arc is still shit. I’ve got a whole rant queued to release soon, actually- I imagine it might be the final time I comment on his arc until Season Six.

To put it short- Macaque still falls upwards into redemption. No pushback or difficulty or introspection. He’s just a magically better person without any onscreen development to make the change believable.

But they reference this at one point?

Sun Wukong points out that Macaque escapes the trial without any punishment, and is just allowed to mope in place of an actual consequence.

So maaaaaayybeeeee they’ll do something in Season Six? I’ve lost all faith that he’ll ever be an interesting character again, though.

He’s essentially just “brooding rival #80058”. Instead of being a character that calls back to Seasons 1-3, from 4 onwards he’s just a brand new dude who totally didn’t commit any atrocities with a smile on his face- and he’s a worse and more boring character for it.

If I haven’t misjudged the intent, I think Monkie Kid will be going back to being an episodic series for the extent of Season Six. Again, they lampshade the “apocalypse after apocalypse” thing, yeah?

And now they have a perfect formula- find someone who’s having trouble with their new power, and help them.

And we might see Bai He again???

Drama for the sake of drama. 0/10 scene. Could’ve just had the interruption come AFTER they held hands, but no. Gotta drag shit out for the shippers or whatever. There was no reason to prolong this reunion.

I’m really not a fan of the “just wait another season for it”, mentality. Stop stretching shit out. You had a chance to do something sweet and heartwarming, and chose not to for the sake of trying to drag a conclusion out.

The most embarrassing thing about the Minecraft movie trailer is that the Lego movie came out in 2014, they've had 10 years since then

The lego movie

-was inspired by fans and community, taking a lot of style and motion from lego stop motion animations, thereby creating a film that genuinely felt like it was made out of lego

-used lego pieces to create smear frames to further capture the feeling of the world

-used one of their most iconic characters (standard builder) to create a storyline about how even unremarkable people can be creative, which is not only awesome but also genuine to playing with lego

-used lots of common minifigures and sets because the animators actually liked the source material (lego bricks)

The minecraft movie trailer

-has taken seemingly 0 inspiration from the game or from fan creations (the only thing they've kept is that stuff is blocky, but they haven't made that accurate to the game or to any fan material I've ever seen)

-has placed real life people (unceremoniously, with bad green screens) into the animated landscape to ruin any feeling of immersion

-has jack black playing the iconic every-man character, which given it's jack black will almost certainly be wierd and goofy rather than normal and relatable, and has focused the story on a set of people from a different world, so undoubtedly the story will be nothing to do with how creativity and trial and error and learning from your mistakes can get you back home (hey that's the plot of Minecraft the game isn't it) but will be about saving the Minecraft world in all its whacky fun time zaniness

I'm not saying that people shouldn't try their own stories, but why make it a Minecraft movie if it isn't like Minecraft and I'm not saying that mixing animation styles and live action doesn't work but this is a step back to pre-roger rabbit quality imo

I'm so hoping to be proven wrong but I'm certainly not going to watch it unless i hear some really good things afterwards

Official photos of the upcoming LEGO Dungeons and Dragons Red Dragon’s Tale set (21348) are officially here! Stacking up to nearly 3,800 pieces, the upcoming set celebrates the RPG’s 50th anniversay with six all-new minifigures, a giant Cinderhowl red dragon, and tons of other fiends.

The set has officially been named LEGO Ideas 21348 Dungeons and Dragons Red Dragon’s Tale – a departure from the fan-submitted model, which was called Dragon’s Keep: Journey’s End by original builder Lucas Bolt (known as BoltBuilds). The differences between the model that’s actually hitting store shelves and the original creation aren’t all that noticeable, but there are some adjustments!

LEGO’s first Dungeons and Dragons kit celebrates 50 years of the role-playing game from Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro. It stacks up to 3,745 pieces and assembles a fantasy scene. There’s a medieval building on the left, which is integrated into the stone of a dilapidated castle. There’s an extra 700 bricks from the original version. That increase goes towards a more detailed model, as well as giving some more love to the side build.

We’ve covered the Dungeon, but what about the Dragon? The LEGO set includes a massive giant Cinderhowl red dragon. It can perch on the castle tower, or just fly around in your own little adventure.

Alongside the actual model, the new LEGO Dungeons and Dragons set includes a handful of minifigures, as well as creatures for them to do battle with. There are six adventurer minifigures, including an Orc Rogue, Gnome Fighter, Elf Wizard, Dwarf Cleric, a Bard, and more. You also get three LEGO skeletons, too. The kit also includes a Beholder, as well as the Displacer Beast. We also get a small glimpse of a brick-built Gelatinous cube and the Owlbear. It’s a really solid mix of figures and beats for them to do battle with.

In true Dungeons and Dragons fashion, the LEGO set also includes a digital download for an adventure to recreate with the included figures.

You’ll be able to buy the LEGO Dungeons and Dragons Red Dragon’s Tale set (21348) starting next month. It officially goes on sale to the public on April 3, but LEGO Insiders will be able to get this one early – as per usual. It’ll drop at midnight on April 1 for those with a free account. It debuts at $359.99. The LEGO storefront page is at this link.

Plus, a Collectible Minifigure Series on the way

Alongside the main LEGO Ideas set, the collaboration will be continuing over to a Collectible Minifigure Series based around Dungeons and Dragons. The lineup will debut later this fall as a second installment of the 50th anniversary action and will include 12 different characters from the role-playing game. That includes Tieflings, druids, bars, and even the Mindflayer. The LEGO Group has now confirmed that it will launch in September.

Dragons Rising S2P2 predictions because I can keep them to myself no longer 🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️🗣️

Ok this is going to be mostly Arin/Sora centric because HOOOO BOY do I sense trouble in the air for these two

First of all, Arin is DEFINITELY going to find out about Sora helping him out with the object spinjitzu thing and I think he’s going to be really really hurt. They spent so much time this season building up his feelings of insecurity and finding this out is going to bring them back in a HUGE way.

Another thing the writers spent a long time building up was Arin’s innate goodness/kindness/naivety. Call me crazy but I think he’s going to learn shatterspin in part 2 - the one thing that literally requires destroying the goodness in your soul. I don’t think he’ll use it much but I think he will learn it and be irreversibly changed

I can envision the lead-up to it so vividly and I think finding out what Sora did is going to be the tipping point. I think the rough timeline would go something like this:

Things are going well-ish. Arin’s confidence is restored and he’s back to training with a new enthusiasm. I don’t think he’ll master object spinjitzu at this point but he’ll be seeing more success and feeling better about himself

Something will happen - my guess some sort of pivotal battle where they’re relying on Arin’s object spinjitzu to save the day and it won’t work and Sora will have to come clean.

Arin - betrayed and insecure - lashes out towards Sora, and then towards Lloyd and the others when they try to comfort/calm him down. He says he needs some time to himself and runs off somewhere

While he’s alone, he’s approached by some force of evil (maybe Ras, or Ras’ master, or someone different entirely) and they use his insecurity to convince him that the ninja are holding him back - think like his conversation with Ras in part 1 - and because he’s feeling so awful about it he’ll agree to join them

Training under this new person, they’ll encourage him to work with all this insecurity and build up a ton of anger towards the ninja - especially Sora and Lloyd - and I think they’ll get him to use that to learn shatterspin

Also pretty sure Sora will learn spinjitzu & rising dragon in p2. Thematically this makes a lot of sense as Sora has been very intertwined with dragons since her introduction (she literally NAMED herself after one), and her element is all about creating new things and pushing the limits of what she can do.

Meanwhile Arin doesn’t have an element (as far as we’re aware, and I really hope it stays that way), and a parts his design speak to oni imagery - the horns especially. I don’t think it’s far-fetched so assume that under the right circumstances he may turn to destruction

Creation and Destruction never ever show up without each other in ninjago. They are completely linked and a recurring theme in the show and I think this will become WAY more evident as dragons rising progresses

Other small things:

Someone will find Jay, probably. (Hopefully!!!!) I’m hopeful for an angsty arc but in all honesty it seems like it’ll resolve quite quickly once they do find him. Tbh im happy either way I just miss my wife

Cole/Geo won’t become explicitly canon but they will continue being delightfully queercoded

I think Wyldfyre and Nya are both going to struggle without Kai,, he’s sort of been a father figure to both of them and knowing he’s stuck somewhere he might never escape from is gonna be really hard on them (esp for Nya who’s already sort of lost one of the most important people in her life)

More Wu info??? (Hoping for this! Hes present in at least one of the new sets (dragon stone shrine, linked below) so im hopeful we’ll find out what happened that silly old guy

🤩 ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: paps.bricks Hello everyone! It's time to direct the spotlight toward our community members, and today we will get to know better paps.bricks!

"Hi everyone. I am Skevos Papageorgiou from Nicosia, Cyprus and I work as a teacher at a primary school.

During the pandemic, I stumbled upon the fascinating world of toy photography, initially experimenting with Playmobil figures. Yet, it was the captivating LEGO creations that truly sparked my imagination.

Despite never owning a LEGO set before last year, I started collecting my first modulars, finding endless inspiration for my snapshots.

My favorite photo subjects derive from the Wild West, pirate adventures and the medieval era. But I also tend to like the simplicity of everyday life scenes.

In my photos I always include some sort of building like workplaces, rooms, or facades etc because they add depth and give viewers more to explore beyond just the minifigure. These details enhance the storytelling in each image, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in it.

Once my setup is ready, I always shoot at the eye level of the minifigure for reasons we're all familiar with. From there, it's all about experimenting with the aperture, lighting, angle, and more until I achieve the desired result.

Drawing ideas from Pinterest, my main goal is to create narratives and capture moments infusing each photo with a unique story. I only wish the process from conception to setup and finally the photo wouldn’t span several days. I must admit I envy people who complete their work in the blink of an eye.

Despite the time-consuming nature of this hobby, every moment spent orchestrating these miniature scenes is incredibly soothing and enjoyable. Though, I must admit, once the shoot is over, the eagerness to tidy up and store everything back in drawers is undeniable!

For my photos I use an Olympus M. Zuiko Digital 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6, a couple of RGB lights by ulanzi and A4 papers as a reflector.

Pao Family Tea House and Firelight Fountain

Some renders of a custom Ba Sing Se town square play set with 4 minifigures and around 430 pcs. It features rearrangeable buildings, tea house seats and plaza. 

On the left is Pao's Tea House which also features two beds so potential "users" of this set have a place to put Jin if they want everyone to go to bed. 

The other house is an inn, where Zuko and Iroh are staying. In the chest Zuko can hide his Blue Spirit mask and swords. 

The post that hangs the Lanterns is rearrangeable as well as rotating, so you can disconnect it to swivel out the plaza.

Some candles in the Firelight Fountain can be put in/out so you can re-enact Zuko "lighting" them.

but what if 4 horns? 6 horns?? a tail or two. what if his oni form triggered his dragon form so instead he entered some form that was both oni and dragon? a mix of his original dna strings. a mix of their different powers. a mix of destruction and creation. what if. just.. what. if. what if that would be the ultimate form of balance for the world? if he couldn't leave this form again- was stuck in it. if either side could take him over depending on the balance of the world. if there's more evil he's more of a destructive oni, if there's more peace he's creating like a dragon. what if you let go of the looks of oni lloyd in the show, magazines and minifigure, let go of all established lore about oni and dragon in our world & ninjago and let your mind and thoughts spiral and create something different, something new that isn't much bound to any preexisting confines? something that is free.

All the way back when S1 was airing (so, prehistoric times), I actually had this crack theory that Bonezai and Dr. Julien were the same character.

Now who is Bonezai you might ask? He's one of the Skulkin, he was from that era of Ninjago where each enemy was advertised in sets and canon as a unique individual with a name, but in the show itself, he's just a placeholder model meant to represent multiple nameless soldiers.

In Bonezai's case, he was one of the Skulkin of Ice, alongside Wyplash; We had two sets of Skulkin, one with the standard minifigure head, the other with a specialized skull mold. Each set had a Skulkin representing one of the four elements of the time, Bonezai was ice. Not in the actual show, but definitely in product descriptions, side lore like the guidebook, and especially in the spinner game, where his character card lists Ice as his primary element. You can see all of this reflected in the color of spike and loincloths the Skulkin had, with white being Ice, gray being Earth, red Fire, and blue Lightning.

Bonezai never really got a proper story appearance, not even in supplementary materials; His only true characterization as an individual was in online descriptions and the like. But he was described as the inventor of the Skulkin vehicles and other machinery, generally chill, but fiercely defensive of his creations; He turned a Skulkin into a tool rack for scratching his Turbo Shredder, and damaging Bonezai's work is a reliable way to distract him.

This was early Ninjago, this was years before we got the Cursed Realm, or the Departed Realm. This was back when the Underworld was apparently THE afterlife for all of Ninjago, with the website in 2011 even stating this. There was the strange implication that all of our protagonists, sans Zane, were destined to become Skulkin, and the Underworld as the arrival for all deceased is kinda played with in the pilots too.

Wu's sacrifice at the Fire Temple is clearly meant to play into the idea that he died and went to the Underworld as a result, taking the Sword of Fire with him. It's even said that no mortal can cross over into the Underworld, implying that Garmadon and Wu both died, and 'banishment' is like being banished to the Shadow Realm in Yugioh, it's just another way to say they died.

Shortly after the pilots aired however, we did get the canon mini-movie shorts, which revealed that there's a passage to the Underworld inside the Fire Temple. So I guess the writers realized the implications of Wu being technically undead, so they did a soft retcon by revealing there was just a portal there the entire time, and that's how Garmadon was able to manifest as well.

But I digress; The point is that up until S4, the canon was that the Underworld was the afterlife. Then we got the Cursed Realm, which differentiated itself as Ninjago's Hell. And finally we had Day of the Departed, which built off of the sixteen realms reveal by making a new, much tamer afterlife called the Departed Realm. During Day of the Departed's release, a lot of lore of dubious canonicity was revealed in the website, including the claim that the Underworld was where disgraced warriors go to where they die. Obviously this was an attempt to differentiate the Underworld and Cursed Realms if they're both Ninjago Hell now, and explain what the Skulkin even are if the Departed Realm is a thing.

All of this is to say: The established lore implies that Dr. Julien became a Skulkin when he died. So we have two dead inventors, affiliated with Ice in some way (in Julien's case, due to having invented Zane) and being very emotionally attached to their creations. So kid me thought it'd be a fun twist if Bonezai was Dr. Julien's undead alter-ego this entire time, because there's no fucking way his name was Bonezai when he was alive.

As for why Bonezai didn't react to his son Zane, I reasoned that the individual named Bonezai never actually encountered Zane; All those lookalikes were just other Skulkin using the same character model for animation ease. As I said earlier, Bonezai never had an actual story appearance, especially not a canon one, so it was easy to imagine that he was just in the Underworld the entire time, blissfully unaware of who his comrades were fighting.

BUT THEN we got S2, which jumpscared us with Dr. Julien's return, and in a way very odd in regards to the Bonezai theory because like. It was retconned that Julien invented the Skulkin vehicles, which at the time upset me because it just undid all of Bonezai's existence as a character. And it was kind of funny because the writers semi-confirmed my theory that Julien created the Skulkin's machines, but in a way that had him replace Bonezai, rather than make the characters the same. So I guess if I really wanted to stretch it, I could still say they're the same, that during Julien's brief stint working under Samukai he became a Skulkin, and then got his flesh back...???

But yeah, it's definitely not canon now, especially with 2016 bringing us the Departed Realm, which is where Julien actually would've gone post-mortem, both times. In 2011 we had books written by Greg Farshtey, who also characterized Bonezai, that established Zane’s amnesiac past before S1 did, and alluded to Garmadon somehow knowing where he came from. So I wonder if Greg Farshtey knew what the Hagemans had planned, if they told him, if they read his work and decided to roll with Zane having a mysterious origin. So maybe Samukai and Julien’s connection was an attempt to follow through on that, a year later.

It was a fun and interesting saga, and my thought process was insane when I saw Samukai and Julien on-screen at the same time, and then saw the blueprints. I suppose the fact that there was already blueprints for Samukai to show means that Bonezai created the initial designs, and then Julien perfected on them; We already got something like that back in 2011, when the guidebook mentioned how Chopov unwittingly improved upon the Skulkin motorcycle design, and his version got approved over Bonezai's, to Bonezai's dismay. So I suppose it was nothing new.

How far back does recorded history go?

Due to the erasure of history by President Business and Octan Energy as well as Project Lotus, history doesn't go far. Minifigure history begins at around the separation of the Downstairs Realms and Unikingdom history starts at the founding of the kingdom on Meraki. The Systar System has some history prior to the creation of Queen Wa'nabi, but most of this is verbally spread and largely exaggerated.

How does history interact with myth and folklore?

Some historical events on other planets and lost early history have become legends. Clutch Powers, for example, is a mythical figure on his own. A lot of his story can be found in the hidden archives of New Bricksburg, but he became a symbol of bravery and freedom to some anti-Octan freedom fighters. There is also said to have been battles fought for control of the essence of pure imagination and of the baseplate that controls the multiverse.

How did the current system of governance come into power?

The tale of Queen Watevra Wa'nabi's rise to power is well known. She was created from the love and kindness of Emmet and was chosen by the Duplons to rule the Systar System. The planet gifts were created from the deepest desires of the Fellowship of Strangers and Meraki was no exception. Her research showed that Unikitty wanted her home back. Originally, this was interpreted as Cloud Cuckoo Land, but the Intergalatic Navy had uncovered the Unikingdom Charter while exploring. The rest is history.

What are some notable figures of history? Emmet and the Fellowship of Strangers, Queen Wa'nabi and her general, Rex Dangervest, Lord Business... even the Unigang and the Doom Lords .

Is your world's history broken down into eras? Yes: * In the Unikingdom, it's by the name of the queen ruling at the time. Until Unikitty took the title, history for the Unikingdom starting from the founding of the kingdom by Queen Wa'nabi was the "Invisible Queen era", since Richard was a regent and no real queen presided. * Minifigure history is based on the state of the "main city" at the time. There's the Bricksburgian era, the Apocalypburgian era, and the Syspocalystarian era.

What events have been twisted and changed as they've been passed down through the generations? Rex's motives change depending on what classroom you find yourself in. To the Unikingdom, it's a far more sympathetic rationale. It was a cry for help because he was in pain. To the Syspocalystarians, he wanted revenge on the world and was purely malicious. Some even still think he was just part of Emmet's imagination.

The Frowntownies teach that the Doom Lords preserved the culture of Ruinenlust and the Unigang overturning them was a bad move.

Gonna be honest, I had no clue there was a samurai Lloyd scrap. If you wanna DM abt it go ahead, I'd love to see (asker only). As far as Lyall's creation lore goes; he's a scrapped concept of Fiore combined with another scrapped(?) Ninjago oc. He's a samurai simply because I didn't want to make another ninja oc. Also Nya, Pixal, Ronin, and Okino are cool, I like the samurai characters.
