When we first started buying Raffles Hotel’s (莱佛士酒店) mooncakes many years ago, it was only retailing for like S$50+ a box. Fast forward to 2024, the price has doubled to almost S$100 for a box of eight Mini Mooncakes (迷你月饼)! Luckily, this is only a once in a year thing and many people are still willing to splurge for the occasion. To sweeten the deal and lessen the damage to the wallet, the hotel is dangling a 30% off selected credit cards discount for early bird buyers.

We skipped over the perennial favourite, the signature Champagne Truffle Snowskin Mooncake (香槟巧克力冰皮月饼) and went for two out of the five new snowskin mooncake flavours the hotel have created for this Mid-Autumn Festival. Each box of eight mini snow-skin mooncakes cost S$97, less 30% credit card discount so we paid S$67.90 each. The Chestnut & Tahitian Vanilla with Rum Truffle Snowskin Mooncake (大溪地香草栗子朗姆酒冰皮月饼) featured rich flavours of chestnut and Tahitian vanilla meld seamlessly with the creamy decadence of rum milk chocolate truffle ganache. Encased within a delicate snowskin, infused with the subtle warmth of sand ginger, each bite tantalizes the taste buds with a symphony of nutty, sweet and spicy notes.

Inspired by the vibrant flavours of a summer garden, the Sudachi & Blueberry with Gin Truffle Snowskin Mooncake (酢橘蓝莓酒冰皮月饼) highlights the unique blend of Japanese Sudachi citrus, succulent blueberries, and refreshing lemongrass, all accented with a hint of gin. The zesty-sweet harmony, luxurious chocolate adds a touch of aromatic intrigue.

What's making me kinda go insane about replaying Chapter 2 now, after doing Kai's mini episode, is that it recontextualize the Yabusame sibling's death. Suddenly, it's not just Rio Ranger being cruel and killing off Reko/Alice, just for the hell of it. Now it's a scene about two pairs of siblings, who are forced to separate by forces out of their control. Both dying in their siblings' arms. Suddenly it's a tale about how Sei loves his brother, which in turn made Rio do the exact same thing that killed him to the Yabusames.
What makes me wonder is, does Rio Ranger remember? Does he have Sei's memories? Did he remember his last time as Sei, dying in his brother's arms, and decides that Reko and Alice doesn't deserve that happiness either? Did he know the pain of losing a sibling, that he knows it's the best way to make someone truly suffer? Does he know that seeing your sibling die in front of your eyes and unable to do anything about it is a worse fate than death?
Rio Ranger doesn't feel happiness, but maybe seeing Reko and Alice reunite- in a Death Game, where only one can win- just made him feel sick and be reminded of a time best left forgotten.

"The only thing worse than being blind is having sight but no vision." - Helen Keller
Introduction
Tumblr media
Gorgon, often referred to as Gin Kuromiya is the youngest among the trio of androids devised by Nadya Kuromiya, the enigmatic head of Oculus and the former scientist of Chuohku. In contrast to their siblings, this half-human creature is an elusive character, shrouded from public view and serving as a covert safeguard. With an air of mystery surrounding them, the android's intriguing presence and hidden strength render them a figure of both allure and trepidation. Although lacking in experience and practical wisdom, Nadya often labels them as the "most perilous of the androids..."
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gin possesses a striking androgynous look, seamlessly fusing contemporary style with elements of fantasy. Their hair, a striking mix of green and black, is styled in a daring yet polished way. On the left side of their face, a pair of scales serves as a subtle yet meaningful nod to their serpent lineage, connecting them to their siblings, Shiori and Bātsu. This distinctive feature enhances the air of intrigue surrounding them. Adding to their mystique, a scar stretches across Gin's right eye, suggesting a history brimming with untold trials.
Their eyes, a muted pale green, feature snake-like irises, further emphasizing their unique heritage. In extreme situations, when Gin shifts into "Defense Mode," their eyes blaze with a vivid red hue, signaling a dramatic change in their attitude and a readiness to confront challenges head-on. This transformation highlights their hidden strength and the potential peril they embody, echoing Nadya's characterization of Gin as the "most formidable of the androids."
Their wardrobe is equally distinctive and practical, showcasing a fitted black and white jacket adorned with a bold orange stripe that runs down the center, infusing a splash of color into their appearance. Underneath, a snug black top complements durable, flexible pants with understated orange stitching. The ensemble is completed with sturdy black boots and fingerless gloves, balancing aesthetics with functionality. This outfit perfectly captures Gin's enigmatic character, ensuring they can move effortlessly and remain prepared for any circumstance.

Personality
Gin, the mysterious youngest among Nadya Kuromiya's creations, stands out from their brother and sister with a blank and emotionless face that hides a deep well of intelligence and understanding. Recently created, Gin's personality resembles that of a newborn, lacking the experiences and feelings that usually form an individual's character. This striking difference compared to their lively and animated siblings sets them apart as an unusual member of the family, a quiet watcher in a world full of intricacies.
As Nadya pursues her quest for revenge, Shiori is motivated by a deep sense of loyalty, while Bātsu acts out of a mysterious self-serving agenda. In contrast, Gin appears unaffected by these driving forces. Their behavior is primarily a reflection of commands given by Nadya or their relatives, showcasing a significant absence of personal goals or aspirations. Their recognition of their own lack of importance, paired with a chilling apathy towards what may happen to them, contributes to an unsettling presence. When they do speak, their voice is gentle and largely emotionless, often reduced to short, one-word replies. This monotonous way of communicating underscores their alien separation from the fervent ambitions of their family.
Even though Gin cannot see in the traditional sense, their awareness of the world remains unrestrained. Their insight, both in a literal and figurative sense, goes beyond the ordinary barriers that would limit a typical individual. This remarkable talent to "perceive" without actual sight reflects Helen Keller's saying, "The only thing worse than being blind is having sight but no vision." Gin personifies this contradiction, exhibiting an exceptional clarity and comprehension that eclipses the confines of simple eyesight.
In "Defense Mode," Gin experiences a dramatic change in both looks and demeanor. Their once pale green eyes blaze into a striking red, indicating a transition to a more mechanical and hostile nature. While in this state, Gin's movements become quick and deliberate, motivated by a focused intent to safeguard themselves and eradicate any dangers. The typically reserved and unfeeling android transforms into an unstoppable powerhouse, lacking any form of doubt or compassion. This intensified level of ferocity and accuracy renders Gin an intimidating opponent, capable of decimating anyone who challenges them.
As an enigmatic safeguard, Gin serves as a perpetual signal of the hidden threats they embody. Their subdued, almost ethereal presence sharply contrasts with the pandemonium that their kin can provoke. Marked by a lack of intense feelings and a detached attitude toward their responsibilities, Gin emerges as the most erratic and possibly powerful among Nadya’s inventions. Their calmness and quietness, reminiscent of a poised snake, hint at a dormant strength that is as intriguing as it is intimidating.
Trivia
They are the first android confirmed to be non-binary. It's unknown if this was their choice, or Nadya's.
Though they are blind, they strangely have no issue getting around without assistance, especially in dark or dimly-lit areas.
They are known for standing perfectly still, almost like a statue. At times, they are so quiet and still, no one, save Nadya, is aware of them unless pointed out.
Most are unaware of Gin's existence, as they are prohibited from leaving Nadya's lab without supervision.
Though Nadya claims to feel no affection for them, especially after [REDACTED], she is strangely protective of them, in her own special way.
Unlike their siblings, Gin has no visible weapons to attack or defend themselves with. Still, that doesn't mean they should be underestimated...
Their virtual A.I. form is the same as the symbol above their right knee.
Like their older siblings, they also have a snake-bot form. However, unlike them, theirs is entirely different from their original form.
