he’d take her to every single dance recital, and would always, always show up to her shows. he wants to be so present in her life, feyd would give her the world if he could. if her comp clashed with one of his arena fights, he would literally put the arena on hold, show up for his daughter, bring her candies and congratulate her, and then go slaughter his opponent as fast as possible so he can get back to the loves of his life (you and mini you).

I’m debating starting a Battletech army… I was awarded some money, not a lot, for a thing, and while the responsible adult thing to do is not spend the money, because Christmas is next, and everything costs more, but I’ve made a bit of a dive into the setting, and it doesn’t need Choas or aliens or anything because Mankind IS THE PROBLEM… I mean, I’d love to play Adeptus Titanicus, but fuck GW, not for anything in particular, but mostly for how they handle (or don’t) things… not any culture war bullshit (they’re your minis) but the move away from the kind of game you play with your friends, to the kind of game you play in tournaments… and yes, I know, nobody is forcing me to play comp rules, but the sad truth is, yeah they are… matched play or campaign, and how are you going to run a campaign while playing randoms? All that accumulated valor and stuff? No place for that in matched play rules… sorry for the rant, lots of shit going on irl and this happens to be the hill I’m dying on right now…

And speaking of dying on hills … Battletech, should I do it? I have a full company of mech with a detached command lance in the shopping cart, but haven’t pulled the trigger, so to speak… so should I do it?

More IRL Lego Lancer!

We played the Tomb of Delios one-shot by Katherine Stark. Some NPC comp / sitrep spoilers ahead.

I used the backs of old trivial pursuit boards for grids, egg cartons, poster tubes, and a big Roomba box + insert for terrain.

I coated the cardboard with this flour and glue paste recipe I found on youtube.

I found a bunch of cheap-ish large lego octogons and walls online for the modular buildings, then greebled them with misc urban details I collected from my local bricks & minifigs bulk by-volume bins.

Our PCs were a Swallowtail artillery (callsign Bandit; an SSC plant in the union auxilliaries), Störtebeker striker (callsign Roadkill, silver-nanite kintsugi'd mechromancer), and Black Witch support (callsign Egret, disgraced princess (gotta be one of my favorite genders)).

The elite cataphract ended up playing trapdoor spider for most of the game; hiding in a magical healing forest (thank u support o7) and grappling PCs back into the forest with it.

Its scariest turn was popping out, structuring the Bandit and destroying his siege stabilizers, and lassoing it back into the forest. Egret came to the rescue and finally did the cataphract in with perimeter command plate/impact lance/crit thrown tactical knife overwatch combo.

The Swallowtail never took any voluntary movement after deploying its siege stab round 1, but between rainmaker knockback, the aforementioned trapdoor spider incident, and allied ferrous lashes, and a few rams, it was pingponged around the map pretty significantly.

"Come out Rainmaker, I just want to talk."

The final threat to the objective was when a bastion clambered up onto the pipeline to contest them. The Störtebeker (whose mini was having trouble standing up on the pipeline) pulled an indiana jones and just shot it down.

For the pre-battle narrative section, I made two 4-step clocks out of lego and a minimap as the party visited various districts of the city. Both were totally unnecessary but I think added a lot to the IRL experience.

All in all, it was a lot of fun! Things that worked well/could be improved on:

The aforementioned mini stability. I should add more baseplates to the minis to making moving and standing them up less finicky.

As cool as the egg carton bottoms are, having flat surfaces is just better. Going to stick with the tops going forward.

The grid ground floor worked great. I should trace more grids onto the egg cartons and larger boxes. I also made a few measuring sticks out of dowels and that was super handy.

Witchdice on phones continues to work well for PC character sheets.

I made a handful of status tokens that we could put next to mechs. They were handy for consumable statuses like lock-on, but less so for memorable ones like exposed and hidden.

We needed more little indicators for misc systems like Javelin Rockets and Iceout Drone.

It was fun to be able to follow up "how do you want to do this" with "you may now destroy the mini".

I love the idea that Nancy would be so accepting of herself and she’d have like a mini gay crisis for like 0.2 seconds, I do personally think she would bc that’s just the kind of person she is. HOWEVER there is something so funny about Nancy being so comp het that she thinks she’s homophobic, because every time she sees Robin with Vickie it makes her want to rip her own hair out but she tries so HARD to be okay with it and she just doesn’t understand why she’s feeling this way about Robin & Vickie when she’s so happy for Steve & Eddie?

and everyone, even MIKE, is hinting at her that it’s because she is literally in love with Robin but Nancy just never picks up on it until one day Jonathan (or Steve or Eddie, I picked Jonathan bc he knows her the best but honestly it works with any of them or maybe it’s all three of them that sit her down 😭) literally spells it out for her and she has a classic *oh* moment. And she’s so glad she isn’t homophobic, except now she has to deal with the fact she’s in love with Robin and Robin’s dating someone else.

Except Robin isn’t dating anyone, she and Vickie are just really good friends after being able to bond over their similarities and of course Robin is in love with Nancy too because who isn’t? She’s Nancy Wheeler. And now everyone has to suffer through watching these two mutually pine for each other and being disgustingly in love without the other knowing.

Bill is obviously very good at this shit

He's been at it for a very long time

But Tom somehow manages to be even better

He had no clue what he was doing half the time and somehow ended up doing hair better than Bill

You guys were raised like twins just as Bill and Tom were raised

So it's very much given that both you and your cousin do almost everything the other does

Including dance!

When you guys got invited to be on the show Dance Moms, you were very excited and so was your cousin

Mainly for the friends and just the dancing

You and your cousin loved competitions

You guys are always each other's duet partner

You both look very similar, due to your dad's being identical twins so you guys have a lot of the same features

You guys compliment one another so well on stage and the chemistry (platonic, weirdos) is very natural

And there is already that level of trust within one another they makes it very easier

Tom didn't think he would be very much in dance or be the father to spend money, time and tears on watching his daughter on stage

But now he is in the crowd every time, getting you the best costume along with Bill, song both of your hair and him and Bill giving the best pep talks

Tom has definitely shed some tears and Bill never lets it go even if he was also crying

They love the fact that y'all have that one specific thing just for the two of you

It sorta reminds them of themselves as they grew up in the band

The fact that you both share that and grow up together with it just gives them that extra bit of comfort

Today’s 2014 Best Dancer is Brady Farrar from Stars Dance Studio. He was the mini male winner from New York. He would go into win 2 more titles (junior male 2017 and teen male 2021) and he was also teen male 1st runner up in 2020. He ended up graduating early in 2022 and is now part of the ABT Company. He has also been choreographing a lot of ballet and contemporary routines for current comp dancers.

I talked a bit about this during Hivebent. In summary, my predictions were:

Sollux is guaranteed to die.

Vriska and the Guardians are likely to die.

The four humans will probably make it to the comic's endgame, as will Karkat, Kanaya and Terezi.

Gamzee, Nepeta, and other secondary trolls could potentially die.

Aradia will remain 'alive', and might move to a biomechanical body in the future.

I couldn't tell you when these deaths will happen, but I stand by each of these predictions - including Aradia's.

The explosion may have destroyed her body, but the ghost within was incorporeal. She'll be back.

Yup. I knew almost nothing about Bec at the time, but it was easy to pick up on the aura of danger he exudes.

Just based on vibes, I'm going with 'a Time Player who was almost a Life Player'. Who knows if that's consistent with the comic's lore.

This idiot thinks his special oven transports him into the future by the amount he sets on the timer. Well, he's sort of right. But in reality, all that's happening is that he's hiding in there until the timer's up, then pops out. [...] The oven doesn't really have any magical time properties to be negated. It just travels into the future at a rate of one second per second, like everyone else.

I suppose it's not explicitly stated that the oven is mundane - just that it doesn't have any powers relating to time.

You set the bomb to go off in a few seconds, when both it and Biscuits are released from it in a few hours.

As you pointed out, this is pretty obviously false - although I actually think it was intentional. The Intermission's time shenanigans were deliberately written to be confusing, and I think the oven's properties were designed to muddy the waters even more.

You're meant to read the line above, and be like: "Wait, what? But I thought it was just an oven! Does it have time powers or not? This was hard enough to follow already, and now the narrator is basically lying about the Felt's abilities. Am I being fucked with?" (Yes.)

I had cheer tonight and yesterday and tomorrow so my brain has figured out what type of position in stunts the LU boys would be if they were cheerleaders :)

also for the sake of this, I'm saying that Wind is on a junior(U16) team, and the others are senior(U18(like me)) or open

(Also this is not just them on a team as athlete wise their'd be only seven of them, and the minimum amount of athletes on a team is twelve)

Time: Man's the stricter coach. You drop a stunt, the entire team does bear crawls or burpees. If it's only him coaching that day, you can bet your ass that you're running stairs or doing a snake for warmup(I couldn't breath and then my chest hurt for the rest of that practice oof). Although he can be fun on travel comps and otherwise.

Warriors: The fun coach. He definitely makes his athletes run lines for warmup and is the one to threaten with jump conditioning(ugh, my legs). He definitely has some of the athletes on instagram. He makes jokes and sarcastic comments while coaching, but can still be serious.

Twilight: The rancher is 100% a backspot(like meeeee). He's tall, and he can easily catch his flyer if they fall. He's be really nice about it all. I can also see him being a CIT(Coach in Training) for a mini(U8) or youth(U12) team. He's the favorite 'coach'.

Sky: I would make a joke about him being a flyer, but man's defo a base. I can see him pulling two mans or one mans easily. He definitely has jerked away from his flyer in a stunt multiple times in order to avoid being stepped on by accident though.

Legend: There is bothing stopping me from throwing this man in the air. He's a flyer, change my mind. He's literally got a fucking cheerleader outfit, he's the star flyer of the team. Man's got the best facials and has amazing air positions with no sweat.

Four: Despite his height, there is no way I am throwing him in the air. He's to strong and sturdy to be a flyer. Man's 100% a base. He doesn't break a sweat.

Wild: Genuinely rotates between all three positions. One stunt he's flying in the three mans, one stunt he's backspotting the elites, and the next thing you know is that he's basing in the pyramid. He's a jack of all trades

Wind: My boy's a base or backspot. Or both. He's just got that 'tall for a teen' vibe to him that makes me want him to backspot cause I'm the same way, but he could probably base as well. He has definitely already had a flyer fall on him from extension at least once though.

Hyrule: My man's a frontspot. He's too short to backspot, doesn't understand the bases grips, and of you put him in the air he's immediately fall out of the stunt. Or he's doing a tumbling pass in the front or doing motions or smth. I dunno either works

Also before you ask, I know all this because I've been doing competetive cheerleading for 11 years now :)

Very little progress this week, only managed to paint for like an hour on Monday, but some of these guys have eyes now.

The Bad News: Though it hasn't been formally announced, the votes are visible and I seem to have lost the writing competition on the Salamander discord pretty hard lol. [EDIT - SO ACTUALLY I came joint second place with like 4 other people!? I guess some votes shifted after I last checked. Weird, because votes seemed to be closed when I checked, but I'll take it lol.] Still enjoyed myself, and will participate again!

The Good News: Now the competition is over, I can share my kroot fic with you all! I need to edit it a bit since it's currently a bit too reliant on the weekly prompts in the comp, but it should be out soon. 😁

April Progress

From last month, what did we do:

Play more games: ✅

I started so good, finishing reviewing the SeedComp! entries, as well as the Revival Jam and had started on the Spring Thing... then I got distracted by the TALJ and Tropico... I also need to update @manonamora-if-reviews at some point... It's at least 100 reviews behind.

Finish the Code of Ch5✅ of Harcourt and edit the Ending Chapter ✅

YES! IT IS DONE! I have finally fixed those godamn doors in the maze that were giving me so much trouble. Also MelS has gotten my edits on all the Chapters/files (and was given extra comments because I also fixed some code in previous chapters). He is hard at work dying editing the missing text.

The only thing left for me is to: - add the maze visuals (map, book/letter formatting) - settle on a design for the final maze puzzle (need to so some research) - include the missing chapter/text (waiting for MelS)

Finish fixing The Roads Not Taken. Or An Eggcellent Preparation. Maybe the other parser too (it just needs a smidge of polish).

LOL... This is the shameful failure that is following me around, ringing that darn bell.

Should i give up on it? Maybe one day...

I have been battling this one the whole morning trying to fix so many bugs. But I'm pretty happy about it. For one: it was actually tested by someone (not like last year). For two: it's actually an easy parser (like you can't lose!).

And the idea had been ringing in my head for so long, I had the prompt submitted to last SeedComp!.

But yeah, this had been happening for a while already. And even though it doesn't have the level of polish I had hopped (future me problem with updates), it is probably one of the better one I've made.

Anyway, play Lysidice and the Minotaur (I'll have an official post tomorrow). (and you can vote for it if you want...)

What else happened this month????

Well, the SeedComp! ended, so I had to deal with all the admin, and making the cool stickers for the different entries. That took quite a bit of time... but worth it! Some really cool entries this year, yet again!

Well, this is more of it's been done last month but released this month: Les lettres du Docteur Jeangille has been translated into English, for the Spring Thing (in the Main Garden, if you feel like voting for games). You can find the post there!

I've been also drafting some post-mortems, one for Jeangille and one for Lysidice. They should come out during the month, at some point.

I wanted to do an entry in the Dialogue Jam, but my idea didn't pan out on time (too buggy for release). Or eer... cough cough... I had enough will power not to do it? Anyway, also I made the Really Bad IF Jam, which starts today!

What’s happening in May?

As mentioned at the start, I'm dropping this section from my check-in. First, it's buried deep in a wall of text, so no visibility (it should have been a separate post, oh well). If people actually check the events out, I'm sure it would be a miracle.

But mainly... a zine has popped up recently, specifically about IF called What's New in IF? (@if-whats-new), releasing weekly. Since it includes events, like the jams/comps/conferences I used to mention here (and it looks more sleek than a Tumblr post), I'll just leave them do all that hard work instead 😅

So yea... as long as the zine is happening, I'm out 😅 Well, I'll drop them links to my jams and stuff I see, because they seem to be looking for help in finding stuff.

The PLANtm for May

I'm playing Tropico, so I'm getting and will probably going to get less stuff done. Which is not a bad think. Breaks are important. Will I go on a break this month?

But if I don't, where's what I hope to do:

Play more games: On my juicy list I have: the Spring Thing, the newly released Dialogue Jam and TALJ, the Locus Jam and Really BAD IF is happening this month too (so more gameses!), and a few non-comp releases I've had my eye on.

Code Chapter 6/Endings: I need to wait for MelS for this, since he's editing my comments. I'll prob look for visuals for the puzzle in the meantime.

Fixing an older games. Instead of new, do something old.

Write the next Chapter/Scene of a WIP, because it would be good to actually do that. And make some actual progress at seeing stuff being done. (I want to write some Razac snippets....)

The forth installment to the mini Yuuka takeover! Doing something different for the new era once again! In previous eras if a song was too long for Beepbox to handle by a lot I would end up not working on it at all, but not this time! I've now made it a rule that if the midi works but happens to be too long, like this one, that I'm going to use it for testing purposes! I'm going to try out new potential cover types on the incomplete ones so that I know what to do on full midis! This time I was going for a futuristic kind of feel, and I did get it, but it's a bit weird. What are your thoughts on this kind of cover?
