These fics are set in the wizarding world but aren’t necessarily canon complaints.
For reference, anything in italics is taken from the summaries on ao3.

Beneath her jumper, her heart was fluttering fast. Her free hand rubbed at the spot, willing it to calm. Her eyes ached from all the nights she spent awake, unable to sleep because it hadn’t calmed in days. Weeks.
She knew why; beneath her fingertips, under the soft cotton of her sweater, her skin tingled. She knew without seeing that the spot above her heart sparkled faintly with gold, like stars spinning in the cosmos. Scattered and dancing around a name that wouldn't quite focus. It was as beautiful as it was terrifying.
Someone, somewhere, was falling in love with her. They were close enough that Lily could feel a tug of alignment if she concentrated enough.
Or, Lily and James go on a walk in the forest.
Sunshine in My Eyes (requires an ao3 account) by monroeslittle
Mr. and Mrs. Evans are killed when Lily's only a girl, and she's supposed to go to a home with her sister. Instead, a relative they didn't know they had comes to collect them, and introduces Lily to manners, magic, and a life that's just the slightest bit different from the life she was supposed to live.
Or, an AU in which Minerva McGonagall raises Lily.
Dying Fires by @jamesunderwater
In fifth year, James attempts to comfort Lily by a dying fire - but finds this will require restraint on his part in a number of ways.
Their tentative, developing friendship is something so special to me

Euphemia cuts Sirius off sharply. “I was simply verifying whether this is indeed the same Lily Evans whose name is written under my dining room table with a heart around it.”
or Lily meets the parents and James tries not to hyperventilate. over and over and over again.

In a world with magic, the only thing that really took Lily by surprise, and trepidation, was the fact that she had a soulmate.
All That's Known by @women-inthe-sequel
Wizards view nearly everything as a problem for magic to fix. Other people might view him that way, but James has never felt broken. He doesn’t need to be wound like an old-fashion toy and programmed to do what everyone else does.
I am in desperate need of more deaf!James (or deaf!Lily). Please can someone recommend me fics
just like a tattoo by sleepygirl0305 (on ao3)
Shortly after he witnesses Remus and Sirius realize that they're soulmates, James gets his own soulmate tattoo. A fairly inconvenient time, given that there is a war going on. And N.E.W.Ts. But no matter, he was going to try anyway.
A Happy Thought by @thelighthousestale
The 7th year Defense Against the Dark Arts Class learns the Patronus Charm.
James is shocked to learn what Lily's Patronus is.
I know that this is a very cliché trope but I'm a sucker for patronus fics.
The Boy (in the bedroom) Next Door by @eastwindmlk
Lily Evans has to move in with her new potion's teacher to finish her apprenticeship. There is one small issue, said teacher? Fleamont Potter, father of infinitely annoying and frustratingly fit former rival James Potter. Who she has not seen after leaving Hogwarts after her third year.
Put on Bed Rest also by @/ eastwindmlk
Hogwarts is covered in snow and James Potter is sick. Who better than Lily to nurse him back to health.
May Moon by Elynn (on ao3)
May Moon- also known as the Flower Moon or Blooming Moon, due to the abundance of flowers that occur as spring arrives.
She glanced up, catching sight of Mary and Marlene in the crowd of unsorted first years, the both of them bouncing on their toes as a new student was called up. She’d already made two friends (she hoped) and Lily was always a bit of an overachiever. “Hiya,” she said, doing her best to sound upbeat. The boy—Lupin—looked up at her, face a bit shocked. “I’m Lily.”
or sixth year, a bad pick-up line, and a secret.
Not really a jily fic (it's pre-relationship) but I really wanted to include it in this rec list

What else is there to do after confessing feelings in the middle of the night than spend a lazy Saturday in bed?
Hell Is Empty (And All The Devils Are Here) by @nodirectionhome-ao3
When an Order mission takes an unexpected turn, James and Lily find themselves stranded together. In the aftermath of the chaos, sheltering together through the storm, a fire catches between them.
Ignore the fact that I can't remember if I've recommended this fic or not. Regardless, the back-and-forth between James and Lily is so good in this fic.
Starlight by @suzyq31
Under the cover of stars, Lily and James go out in search of an elusive flower. The northern lights make Lily contemplate how plans change.
The next few fics are all by @apalapucian because I may or may not have been stalking her ao3 page. Everything, and I mean everything, Jayne writes is incredible.
maybe it was egos swinging (maybe it was her)
James starts rolling his shoulders, wincing. "Jesus, Evans." "back at ya," says Lily, testing her wrists. "ever heard of taking it easy?" "with you? never." "can’t believe you’d use confringo on me." "knew you'd block it," he says. "can’t believe you’d use depulso." she shrugs, grinning. "knew you'd block it."
(or: seventh-year, auror-aspirant, academic rivals, head boy and head girl James and Lily.)
I still can't get over the fact that Jayne wrote me over 11 thousand words of academic rivals jily. ELEVEN THOUSAND WORDS OF ACADEMIC RIVALS TO LOVERS JILY!! The banter, the stakes, I love everything about this fic
calliope calling
in which:
James wields a wand for the first time; Lily giggles, tracing an impossible dancing deer in the sky; Sirius slams the door; Peter sighs; and Remus screams, raw and screeching and piercingly young.
(or: the marauders and lily evans as children, and something about invisible strings glinting in the moonlight.)
green light
There are yellow roses on the kitchen table. a cup of coffee charmed to keep warm for a time. a scrawled "morning! :) –James & Harry" on a scrap of paper, the torn bottom of a receipt for... milk, she finds. and strawberries. harry was signed by Harry himself, and Lily wants to cry at the shaky strokes, the crooked lines. she can hear them in the other room where James' window seat project is almost finished. harry is laughing. he asks questions, mocks his dad's shabby handiwork, drops the things he's asked to hand.
roses and handwritten notes and coffee and giggles nearby. this is her life now. she skims the flowers, the sun itself in her heart.
or: the war is over. everybody lives AU. (well, not everybody everybody, but the potter family + sirius + remus + even peter* live.) old fic rewrite.
* = you'll see.
bad day wall
Lily calls it the bad day wall. it's like this weird communal one-liner diary thing.
every time i think i'm over her something happens and it hits me just as stupidly intense as all the other times. i'm SICK of it
why can't people just LIKE by default the people they LOVE? why do they have to be separate feelings? it would make things so much less complicated
or: in sixth year, Lily starts talking to a stranger(?) through messages on a wall. she also befriends James Potter. These two things are completely not related.
I haven't read this one but it on my marked for later

The Sound of Silence
Minerva always had a soft spot for Potter. Maybe that's why when it was time to choose a Head Boy alongside Lily Evans, he was was clearly the only option--- A series of vignettes of James and Lily's seventh year through McGonagall's POV.
AN: Posting this one a day early because I won't have time tomorrow (sorry) Written for Jily Week 2024, Day 5: Matchmaker (hosted by @kay-elle-cee and @sunshinemarauder)...Fully dedicate this one to the many teacher meetings I've sat through where we all devolve into gossiping about students. AO3 Link Here
I.
They sat around a circular table which always reminded Minerva of a story she heard as a child. Her colleagues had shuffled in slowly, still rosy with summer and the ever rejuvenating feeling of silence after a school years worth of endless noise.
Filius sat next to her, pulling out a pipe and stoking it with a flame emitted from his short stubby finger. He sighed and a puff of smoke wafted into the middle of the table.
“Here we are again—” he said to no one in particular. Minerva just clasped her hands on the table and waited for the final stragglers to trickle in.
Albus sat on the other side of the sphere and regarded his staff with half-amusement. Many of them had been long friends—giving centuries of their lives to the school. How many powerful witches and wizards had they watched slip out of these doors with their collective spirit within them? If the thought wasn’t so saccharine, Minerva would have perhaps felt a little proud.
Albus cleared his throat and the staff settled. At this point they needed no commencement speech on why they all were called from their little parts of the castle to assemble, nor did they want one. The golden rule was short meetings were the best ones.
Horace spoke first. He always did.
“Obviously I think there’s no arguing that Lily Evans should be the first pick.”
There was a rumble of agreement. Even Filius made a reluctant nod. He never willingly wanted to agree with Horace on much of anything.
“That’s a fine choice Horace, but are you not worried about the matter of her blood status? I’m sure you are not ignorant of the current news and I can imagine your house is quite
vocal about these happenings.”
McGonagall heard a snort from Filius which was hard to miss seeing as it bounced his whole body slightly off his chair.
“Oh, Albus, must we always make these things so political,” Horace whined, “Evans is a brilliant witch
the best of her year—I’m sure we can—we can—” He teetered off, not knowing how to finish. It wasn’t a secret that despite his affinity for the muggleborn, his house was not so keen to accept her. They all would be idiots to disregard the dangers of putting someone of her status in charge in the current climate.
But Albus didn’t press further. It was never his nature. “Then it’s settled. Lily Evans is Head Girl.” There was another mumbled agreement. Horace’s face was pink and slightly sweaty, but he nodded all the same.
“So onwards to—”
There was a shuffle of teachers. Sybill spoke first:
“Oh, Oh! I choose the Delile boy. His tea leaves have always shown potential.” A couple seats down, Pomona snorted.
“Colin Delile? That boy tried to eat a handful of nightshade thinking it was mint last year—”
“Well, I vote for Ambroise Cunningham: smart, good quidditch player (“mediocre quidditch player,” Minerva thought) and has a good head on his shoulders!” Interjected Rolanda.
There were some nods in agreement but Filius started to tut.
“Are you all forgetting that Cunningham and Evans dated two years ago? They’ll kill each other!”
“Oh, I would hardly call that dating,” Horace scoffed.
“They certainly looked like they were dating when I found them in the charms broom closet that October!” Filius shot back.
He had a point. She wouldn’t call Filius her friend per se but she had a fond appreciation for him being insightful when it came to the students’ lives. He was very discreet, perhaps with the help of his size, but he always was up to date on each of their lives.
Minerva mulled a thought around for a minute while drowning out the verbal quidditch that was occurring for the rest of the staff. It was a gamble, certainly. But she had never been the one to shy away from a challenge.
Raising her voice above the riffraff she called out, “I say James Potter should be Head Boy.”
The room went silent. Around the table, every set of eyes peered at her with mixtures of shock.
Chaos erupted.
“Potter can’t keep himself out of detention to save his life,” screamed Aurora.
“That and his little group were growing muggle drugs in the west greenhouses!” Pomona chimed in.
Albus didn’t even try to get order. He just continued to stare at her with an expression that twinkled beyond the room.
Minerva huffed. “Well, can any of you deny that he is brilliant?” Everyone paused. A wave of indecision rushed through the group.
“And we know he’s a good leader. The Gryffindor team has won every year since he became captain.” Horace grumbled something under his breath but she ignored it.
“---And, we are going to need someone who is willing to help, Hecate forbid, if there is an attack of some sort due to all this Dark Lord bunk. He might be scrappy and a fool sometimes, but he’d be able to hold his ground for the others.”
There was a hesitant noise of agreement around the table. People shifted in their seats, not able to find fault in her logic but also not enjoying its outcome.
“And what about Evans then?” Horace had his arms crossed against his chest. “Potter has been tormenting the poor girl for years. They would be rubbish, absolute rubbish—”
“Ah, shut it Horace,” Filius scoffed, “We all know those two have been clouding up this school with sexual tension for a better half of a year now.” More nods all around.
Minerva had hoped that no one would make the romance argument, but it couldn’t be helped. Potter and Evans had been making all of their lives unbearable, with their oblivious pining and rowing. It was like watching an ouroboros eat itself the way the two provoked each other. There was a small part of her that even hoped that matching the two together would end their purgatory.
“Ah, the ancient magic of young love,” Albus mused to himself, stroking his beard. “I won’t deny that I like the idea. Are there
any others who seriously denounce the decision to make Potter Head Boy?”
Horace made a few grumbles, but ultimately kept quiet. He knew once Albus made a decision, he wasn’t easy to sway.
“Then it’s settled, Lily Evans and James Potter.”
“Hecate help us,” Pomona mumbled under her breath.
II.
She watched as they shifted next to each other uncomfortably. Both of them dawned golden badges with encrusted initials on them that looked too heavy to be pinned to their robes. She had honestly expected more hiccups on the first day back, but something had already seemed to have shifted between them. Evans actually smiled when Potter offered her some dessert, took it from him and blushed when their hands grazed. She said something and James let out a laugh that made her smile as well.
“Now, that’s interesting.” Filius whistled, sitting next to her at the great banquet. “Maybe your little matchmaking stunt was unneeded.” He side-eyed her and she didn’t entertain his amusement.
She looked back at the young couple. Potter had begun to explain something with extreme animation. He waved his hands around and Lily actually laughed at his antics. When he finally finished whatever he was saying, his hand rested on the bench between them and Minerva swore she saw Evans place hers on top of his.
“Oh Merlin, what have I done.”
III.
“I think we have Miss Evans to thank for his rehabilitation. That girl can do anything,” Horace chortled at lunch a week later.
“What are you talking about? He blew up the Slytherin bathroom just yesterday.”
“Well—he would have done it six more times already if it wasn’t for her influence!”
No one could argue that there was a great change between the two Heads. Horace wasn’t wrong, Potter was being better behaved this year and in turn Evans had started to cozy up to him more and more. Even at that moment, they entered the great hall together. Potter had both of their bags slung over his shoulder and his eyes were glued to her. As they sat, Evans pulled his glasses off in a fuss, cast a cleaning charm on them, then put them back on his face. Her hand lingered to push some of his unruly hair away and he made a dopey swooning smile.
“It's like watching a dead body be reanimated,” Filius nodded towards the two.
“You’re being dramatic.”
“Don’t act like you aren’t seeing this. At this rate they’ll be married by graduation.”
She looked over again. They were sitting so close that their shoulders were touching. Black was engaging them in conversation with a lively reenactment of some muggle movie they had watched, but the couple seemed to be hardly listening. Slowly, like attempting to touch fire, Evans leaned her head onto James shoulder—slightly hovering it in indecision for a moment before putting her weight fully on his. Potter perked up, then dared to place an arm around her waist.
Filius let out a low whistle. Horace moaned.
“I was really hoping she would get with one of the Black boys..” Horace mumbled, “ blood purity aside, I do think they would be better suited
”
But he got cut off by Pomona who came half sprinting down the table.
“Are you seeing this?? Potter! Evans!”
VI.
Christmas break was already upon them, which meant all of the professors were stretched too thin to think. Heads of house always had the worst of it. On one hand that meant she didn’t have to see Horace chortling around the castle half as much, but on the other she now had the Gryffindor house and the two Head students to preside over. As she walked, she mumbled to herself about how she would never offer up a Gryffindor into the Head position again.
She mounted the stone steps towards the Heads’ office, trying to balance all the rolled parchments in her arms. Entering the small elaborate passage, she could see the light of the office was on.
As she approached the image of them became more clear. Potter was elongated over the couch with his feet dangling lazily over the edge of the armrest. Evans laid between his splayed legs and over his torso. Using her forearms, she propped up on his chest and seemed to be drawing small circles into his shirt. Potter fiddled with her hair, twisting it through his fingers as though it was a snitch evading being caught.
They spoke in low tones so she could hardly make out what they were saying. Potter said something to make her laugh tinkle into the cavernous room before tugging lightly on her to become eye level. Minerva watched with a sinking feeling as her two Head students locked lips, and proceeded to not break away from each other for a long time.
She stood there in the passage, feeling a bit sorry for herself for being in this position: busy, overworked, trying to teach a class while helping Albus get a counterforce together...and now apparently being too sheepish to tell her Head Students to stop snogging long enough to take some of the work off her hands.
With a little shriek from Evans, Potter flipped them over so he was now hovering over her while a hand disappeared somewhere Minerva did not want to guess. Admitting a sort of defeat, she spun on her heel and left the way she came.
V.
The morning of the last day of school started like all of the other 200 times she’d done it. She woke up, made herself some tea, shifted into her cat form and curled around her bedroom window.
A knock rattled the door. She lifted her head and hoped that whoever was bothering her would take the hint. Another set of knocks, and distinctly not Albus’ typical rap. She did a cat’s equivalent of a sigh and changed herself human again.
She opened the door to find Potter looking out of breath and somewhat sheepish. Not a good start.
“Good morning Minnie,” he beamed at her.
“Mr. Potter, can I help you? It’s 6am
”
Potter ran a hand through his hair. On a glance over he looked suspiciously put together for the time of day.
“Er, yes actually. I’m hoping I banked enough goodwill with you to ask for a favor?” Even he sounded unsure of himself. She didn’t know what it was about him, but he always knew how to hit her soft spot.
“I don’t know about this goodwill, but I’m listening.”
He let out a relieved huff then suddenly became very animated. “Brilliant—ok. I can’t really tell you right now, because it's kind of a secret, but I would really really love it— and be forever grateful to you— if you kept students away from the lake this afternoon.”
Minerva blinked at him. There was no bone in his body that was not being sincere, she could see that, but how often had he looked the same when he wanted to do one of his little stunts.
Seeing her pursed lips, he continued. “I swear. I solemnly swear it's not a prank. Just please.”
“Ok.”
“Wait, what?” he blinked at her like she had grown two heads.
“Don't make me regret this decision Potter.”
“I won’t— would never. Ah, Thank you Minnie! You’re a doll!” He turned and bounded down the stairs.
XXX
It turned out to be quite difficult to keep students away from the lake, but she managed. The clock was ringing 3pm and she was starting to wonder how long she was supposed to keep things up when she spotted them. Potter and Evans were walking hand in hand. They both hadn’t changed into their regular clothes yet and Evans was talking softly. Potter looked like he wasn’t hearing a word of it. Honestly, he looked wrecked. Whatever was on his mind was clearly eating him alive—not at all the same collected boy that had knocked on her door that morning.
The lakeside was cleared as promised and they walked beside it before stopping and looking out at the mountains far away. It struck Minerva this would be the last time she would see these two in this setting. The next time they would meet they would be equals, fighting what now felt like an impossible war. She savored the moment of seeing two people in love, unaffected for perhaps the final time by death and sadness.
Potter turned to Evans looking like he was about to combust. Evans must have noticed because her brow furrowed and she placed a hand on his chest, which he immediately grabbed and held in both hands. Very shaky, he lowered himself onto one knee.
She waited for noise. For some sort of big show that Potter and his mates set up for the occasion, for students to come bursting at the seams of the castle to ruin the moment, for even just the sound of a yes.
Instead, there was silence. A blissful, pure silence. She must have blinked and missed it because Potter’s arms were wrapped around her now, lifting her off the ground. Tears poured from both of their eyes as they in turn tried to wipe the other's face—opting finally for kissing each tear off each other’s cheeks. There was no noise—just sweet relief.
For a split second, the two reverted back into their eleventh year selves. Small, unsure, and holding onto each other tightly against the weight of a world still unknown to them. It was the first time in a long time she wanted to cradle something in her arms. To tell them it was going to be alright; to keep them whole.

Quidditch prodigy
Tumblr media
Banner by awesome @the-dream-team.
Summary: This time, when she tells Harry he will be the new Seeker, Minerva McGonagall says: “Your father will be proud. He is an excellent player himself” (and Harry knows it’s true because he spent years watching his father fly).
For @alec-lightwood-bane, who asked for a bit of James getting to be proud with his Quidditch prodigy. The only plot here is fulfilling your request :)
Now on AO3.
________________
From the first time that Harry mounted the little broomstick that Sirius gave him for his first anniversary, James knew his son would be a Quidditch player (sometimes he’d tell Lily that he knew that ever since he felt Harry kicking inside her, but Lily tells him all babies kick; it was not a signal, no matter how at that moment James was talking about Quidditch).
He is not surprised when brooms are Harry’s favourite gifts and, as his godfather, Sirius is more than willing to replace his brooms as Harry grows up, until, finally, for his eleventh birthday, Harry gets a Nimbus 2000. It is his first professional broomstick and Harry can’t stop talking about it all day, promising he will be a Gryffindor player in no time, discussing with Sirius how unfair it is that First Years don’t get to have their own broom nor play in their house team.
That afternoon, after the sunset when the temperature gets milder, they play a kind of five-person Quidditch, which makes no sense and have no rules other than Sirius and Lily are a team, James and Harry is another, and everyone needs to score a goal against Remus, who is a moderately good Keeper.
Harry spends most of the time trying to learn how to ride the broom, so very different from the juvenile models he trained before, mostly intercepting the passes between his mother and Sirius than actually scoring goals. It’s not his son’s best performance, but James says nothing, only ruffling Harry’s hair and making it even more messy than flying already did it.
Harry flies well, naturally, but as a Chaser he always seemed to lack something. He works twice because of it, and James supports him.
The next morning, James awakes at dawn for no good reason. He plans to go downstairs only to drink some water before going back to bed and just laying there, but when he arrives at the kitchen, he finds the backdoor opened.
His wand is at ready at once, but it’s only Harry flying at dawn. He stops at the doorway, watching his son. He really flies perfectly — and boldly, he notices, training movements that James is sure he didn’t teach him and that Lily would have a fit if she saw, long dives that end with him recovering from it at the least possible moment, loops in the air that make him stand thirty feet in the air hanging on his broom only with one hand.
It is like watching him doing an extremely dangerous dance, and James makes sure his wand is ready, just in case, though he feels it’s not the first time Harry is doing this. It looks too well practiced for it.
And it’s not the usual Chaser movements either.
This thought comes for him at the same time that Harry picks up a Golden Snitch from his pocket. He closes his eyes and lets the Snitch fly away, waiting a few seconds until he opens his eyes and flies upward, standing very still fifty feet up, only his eyes moving, concentrated. James can’t see anything different, but after one minute, Harry dives suddenly. When he recovers from the flight, the Golden Snitch is secure in his hand, its wings flying pointless in his closed hand.
His laugh fills the silence of the morning.
When James starts applauding, Harry’s laugh dies. He turns to his father’s direction, his face reddening and a mortified expression arising there.
‘Dad — I — I can explain —’
It feels as if his son is confessing a sin, rather than showing his talents, and James doesn’t understand.
‘What?’
‘This, I —’
‘Well, I must admit I’m upset’, James says, his voice teasingly, but Harry doesn’t seem to notice this. ‘Next time, you should tell me’.
‘I didn’t want — I mean, this is just for fun, I don’t really —’
‘Flying without inviting me? I am so disappointed’.
Harry pauses, dismounting his broom and holding it unsurely. ‘You are not mad because I was playing Seeker?’
James blinks, confused. ‘Why should I? You are natural!’
Harry looks at his feet. ‘We always trained chasing. You are a Chaser’.
‘Yeah, I was, so?’
‘So I should be one. Like you. Everyone tells me I fly like you, and... I didn’t want to disappoint you’.
James shakes his head, baffled that Harry could come up with that conclusion. Well, there is only way to show him. ‘Mount your broom. Go on’.
Harry’s eyes are big, not understanding him, but he does as his father says. James keeps motioning for him to go up in the air and, when Harry is fairly high, he transforms the basket of apples in the kitchen into a basket of golf balls, going to the middle of their backyard.
Then he starts throwing one golf ball in the air after another, and Harry understands at once, flying around and catching each one before they fall in the ground, even when James throws more than one at a time. His son is rather breathless when he lands next to his father.
James can only beam. ‘See? You could never disappoint me’.
‘Even if I don’t try for a spot at the team as a Chaser?’
‘Any team will miss much more if you don’t play as Seeker’. Harry lets out a laugh that is undeniably relieved. James watches his son as they sit in the middle of the garden. ‘I mean it, Harry. Even if you didn’t play at all, I would never be disappointed with you’.
Harry raises his eyebrows, eyes glinting with mischief. ‘Even if I hated Quidditch?’
‘Well, you are right, then I would have to disinherit you’, he says seriously, but Harry’s chuckles in answer tells him that Harry understands his father is only joking. ‘Since when do you practice as a Seeker?’
Harry throws him a sideway look. ‘Two years now’, he says, smirking when James looks surprised. It’s not easy to hide anything from his parents, and yet Harry seemed to have perfected that. ‘Ever since I found this old Snitch in the attic’.
He picks up the Snitch again from his pocket. The Snitch tries to fly away, but when Harry hands it to James, the wings calm suddenly, the Snitch resting peacefully on his father’s hand.
‘Oh, what’s that?’
‘Flesh memories’, James explains, smiling. ‘This is the Snitch I nicked a long time ago at Hogwarts. It was never used before, so since I was the first to catch it
’
‘It remembers you’, Harry finishes, amazed.
‘And I remember it’, James murmurs, letting the Snitch fly and grabbing it easily. Even after all these years, his reflexes are still good, he thinks smugly. ‘I used to try to impress your mother with it, you know’.
‘Did it work?’
James runs his hand through his hair. ‘None at all. I hope you have better luck showing off with the Snitch than I did’.
______________________
Harry writes home twice a week at least, and every one of his letters mention how he misses flying and then that he at least is counting the days for the first flying lesson, so he can be in the air even for a little.
James expects his letter as usual the day after the flying lesson is scheduled, but instead he wakes up to find a grey owl waiting for him at breakfast, watching him severely. Only Minerva McGonagall would have an owl that looks as stern as her, but then again James always remembers how McGonagall’s patronus is herself, so he shouldn’t be so surprised.
What surprises him is her request that he comes to meet her as soon as possible that morning, informing the Floo Network to her office will be opened.
It seems serious and he can’t help but think of something happening to Harry. His son’s owl is nowhere at sight, though.
He scribbles a note to Lily informing he will be out for a chat with McGonagall — it shouldn’t be news to her since they met at least once a month to talk about the updates in the Transfigurations field — and quickly vanishes inside the green flames.
She is expecting him when he arrives, looking over a few scrolls.
‘James’, she says, the weirdest of the expressions on her face. She seems satisfied. ‘Have a seat’.
‘Hello, Professor’, he says, slipping into the old formality without even noticing. He usually meets her at the Three Broomsticks, rarely coming into her office. It always brings him memories of his years at school, and he almost expects to find the Head Boy badge pinned to his clothes.
‘You seem tense’, she notes, watching him over her glasses. ‘Take a biscuit’.
He does. Her biscuits are really tasty, but sitting in front of her, waiting for her to talk, makes him feel like he has just done a prank and is about to get a detention.
‘You must be wondering why I called you here’.
That makes him grin. Jokes were always his remedy to diffuse any situation. ‘I reckon you missed me’.
‘Hardly, when I see a copy of you everyday in the halls’, she replies easily, almost smiling. ‘Your son is less loud, though’.
‘Well, he did get a lot of Lily’.
‘Unfortunately not her disposition to follow rules’, Minerva notes, sipping her tea calmly.
‘Uh’, James hesitates, unsure. It’s not normal to call a parent for any misconduct (or else his parents would never leave McGonagall’s office), so if she called him here
 ‘What happened?’
‘You know we have some rules that are stricter than others. For instance, this year the third floor corridor is absolutely forbidden’.
Years of ignoring rules make James want to ask what’s there, or else go discover for himself, but he just nods.
‘And one of the rules we always follow is to expressly forbid First Years of owning a broom’.
‘Hum’, he mumbles, still unsure. Harry knows that rule (he certainly complained a lot), and James is sure he saw the Nimbus 2000 waiting patiently in their broomshed, so he doesn’t get what’s her point.
‘Your son is bound to break that rule this year’.
‘He brought his broom?’, James asks before he can think through it, his mind trying to understand how Harry got to replace his broom with a fake copy so he could smuggle it to the castle. There is a mild impression, but if Harry did it, he would be in serious trouble

‘No, not yet, I was hoping you could send it. He told me has a Nimbus 2000, is that correct?’
Feeling like he is missing the point still, James nods.
‘Good. If you could send it next week, it would be perfect. I am still getting the board’s signature of approval, but it’s only a formality, Albus already authorized it’.
‘Minerva’, he interrupts her. ‘What is happening?’
‘Oh’, she stops, looking simply delighted. ‘Yesterday during his first flying lesson, your son took to the skies after some silly gibbering with the Malfoy boy. As you may know, Rolanda is quite loud about how any First Year that flies unsupervised gets expelled. Or, well, a detention at least, but we don’t tell them that. First Years are so inclined to follow the rules
 present company excepted, of course’.
James smiles guiltily now. But even he, desperate as he was to join the team, followed that rule at least. Madame Hooch really imposed fear.
‘What happened then?’
‘I saw him through my window’, Minerva tells him, pointing to the window next to her, that provides a nice view of the grounds. ‘Fifty-foot dive, recovered without a single scratch. Did you teach him that?’
James raises his eyebrows. ‘No, actually, he taught himself’.
‘Well, he is a natural, that I can’t deny. So I made him the new Seeker’.
‘Hum, what?’
‘Seeker’, she replies, not bothering to hide her smirk now. ‘I know you’ve been long gone from the Quidditch field, but you do remember what a Seeker is, I am sure’.
Later he will appreciate the fact that Minerva McGonagall is teasing him. For now there is only bewilderment.
‘But — seeker — no First Year — he must be the youngest Quidditch player in decades —’
‘A century, actually’, she corrects him. ‘I checked the records’.
‘That’s — that’s amazing! I am so —’, he stops, staring at her. ‘He broke a rule and you are awarding him?’
Minerva looks moderately embarrassed. ‘It’s not an award. I expect him to train harder to compensate for the years the other Seekers have of advantage, and if he doesn’t seem to take this seriously, I will reconsider not punishing him — oh, stop smirking, Potter’.
She looks suddenly stern again, but James can’t help himself.
‘You have a soft spot for him!’, he declares, grinning.
‘I certainly do not play favourites’, she answers, voice full of dignity. ‘I only think of what’s best for Gryffindor and —’, she drops all pretenses suddenly. ‘— you should have seen the try outs! Wood, that’s the captain, Oliver Wood, was crying at the end because no one was able to even find the Golden Snitch. And after last year
’ She shakes her head. ‘If it means we won’t get flatten out by Slytherin ever again — that annoying smirk on Snape’s face —, oh, well, I would buy your son a broom myself!’
James smiles proudly now. There was always a fanatical Quidditch enthusiast in Minerva and he adores when it shows. And from all he knows of Snape, he will hate the fact that James Potter’s son is in the team in his First Year, which is only a bonus (though that is a thing he won’t admit out loud).
‘No need. I will make sure he is dedicating himself, but knowing Harry, he is just too marvelled at being part of the team. It’s what he most wanted’.
She sighs, somberer now.
‘And that’s why I called you, actually. Considering your long history of disregarding rules, this Seeker position is not to mean that your son will get away with everything. I’d rather have him go through his school years without too many detentions’.
‘Only a few?’, James teases.
‘Let’s aim for one third of yours and I will call it a success. He is a Potter after all’.
James nods, trying for a serious expression that’s broken by the fact he can’t stop beaming. His son. First Year Seeker! He can’t wait until he tells Sirius.
‘Oh, I will talk to him’, he assures her. ‘We can’t let detentions get in the way of Quidditch’.

The Marauders and Minnie's wife
Not edited sorry!
I will die on the hill that minerva mcgonagall had a cottage girl wife that she never told anyone about because no one ever asked her. They lived in a cottage in rural England.
When Minnie went off to Hogwarts every year, the pair exchanged letters almost every other day, but Minnie being the genius she is, figured out a way to talk to her every so often, not just send letters. Every single letter was kept in a small box in Minnie’s classroom and whenever she was feeling homesick she would go through every single one.
Minnie’s wife had never gone to Hogwarts because she was a squib but she completely supported Minnie’s passion for teaching.
Even though Hogwarts can make whatever food Minnie wants she always longs for her wife’s baked goods. They also have 3 cats. And one dog. One ginger, one ragdoll, one black and white spotted one and they had the most joyous golden retriever.
A hot summer before 6th year the Marauders being canonically extremely smart, decided to find and visit their favorite teacher for fun. When they found her house they were shocked to see that instead of their strict yet lovable teacher there was a short little woman with a pleated dress and flowers in her hair.
“Moony?” James started cautiously.
“Maybe we messed up the address-”
Remus spun around to Sirius, “I did not mess up.”
“Maybe-”
“Are you looking for someone?” Her voice was soft and cheerful.
The boys turn slowly to look at the woman. Sirius sauntered forward. “Yes actually you don’t happen to know a ‘Minnie’ do you?”
She cocked her head to the side, her brows drawn in thought.
“Minerva mcgonagall.” Remus corrected, sheepishly.
If you asked any of the marauders they would have told you that the woman’s eyes lit up at the mention of the name.
“Oh! Yes she lives here! How do you know her?”
“She’s our teacher. I’m James. Though she may have called me the best quidditch player Hogwarts has ever seen.” James grinned. “This is Sirius potter, the tall one is Remus Lupin and he’s Peter pettigrew.” Yes James introduced Sirius as a potter to everyone after his disownment.
The woman grinned, “Oh how wonderful, yes she’s told me a lot about you! Please come in!”
They then went on to talk until it was dark outside.
Minnie was off doing order business so she came home late. She was taken aback to see her 4 favorite students and her wife all seated and laughing as they held a warm mug of butter bear in their hands.
After that day the marauders made it a point to visit Minnie and her wife a bit more often, even writing her letters when they went to hogwarts. Regrettably, their visits became scarce when the four got involved in the war and eventually she would never see 2 of the 4 boys ever again.
After THE halloween, Remus visited Minnie’s wife. The moment he stepped in he was swept into a warm hug. He could tell she was devastated. Her eyes were puffy and she looked tired.
“Where’s Minnie?” His voice lacked its usual warmness.
She pitied the boy. When she looked at him she wanted to cry. He had lost everything.
“She’s cleaning up some of the remains of the war.” She answered softly.
The pair talked for a bit until she asked him what his plan was.
“I don’t know, but you probably won't see me again for a while. That’s why I’m here. I wanted to say goodbye.”
After that interaction he didn’t see her for 12 years. When he came back it was because he was scared. He was afraid that now that Sirius was out of Azkaban he would look for both Minnie and her wife. He had warned them. While Minnie put up protective spells, her wife couldn’t help but feel that the story didn’t add up.
Both she and Remus were right.
One night when Minnie had gone away to teach, she heard a knock on her door.
She didn’t know how to feel when she opened the door to find Sirius Black Potter’s gaunt face smiling at her.
“If you ask me to leave I will.” He had simply said.
Her brows furrowed, “No come in please.”
He explained everything while she tended to his wounds and fed him until he was ready to leave.
Her heart once again broke a few years later when she was told by her wife that Sirius had died in an Order fight. Soon after, she was mad. She was mad that Liberation only came with his death. He deserved so much more. He deserved to be free when he was alive.
A few years later she had received yet another knock on her door. She opened it not expecting to see three 16 year olds staring at her. One had flaming red hair and freckles littered across his face. One had bushy brown hair and tanned skin. But it was the final one that made her breath catch. A boy with tanned skin and unruly hair stared at her. She felt her eyes well up as she remembered a boy who she once knew who looked exactly like him. All the same except the eyes.
“You look just like your father Harry.”

RIGHT PLACE, WRONG TIME — Part IV
Plot: Y/N finds herself trapped in a time in which she doesn’t belong only to learn that maybe that was her place all along.
Pairing: James Potter x Fem!Reader
Warnings: Slightly sexual scene with mild cursing.
A/N: Gif isn’t mine (took it from google, so please, if it belongs to you let me know so I can credit) and since my mother language isn’t English, I apologize for any mistakes in advance! :)
Tumblr media
As the weeks went by and you still haven’t heard back from Dumbledore, you did your best to avoid James. You hardly even saw him and when you did, you barely spoke two words with him. You knew he had asked Lily why you were shutting him down because she told you and did ask that herself. You couldn’t exactly explain the reason why it was better for everyone and why it was the right thing to do, so you started shutting her and all of your friends down as well. Not as hard and as completely as you did with James, though. You were growing more miserable and lonely every day, wishing you could just go back to the future time where life was way more gentle and kind at you. It was the fourth night in a row that you had purposely skipped dinner to avoid seeing James. You were at Hagrid’s cabin, paying a visit to your dear friend and trying to cheer yourself up a bit.
“Yeh sure yeh don’ wanna eat anythin’, uh Y/N?!” Hagrid offers you a plate full of homemade cookies.
“I’m still stuffed from lunch, but thanks Hagrid!” You politely decline his offer, a warm smile on your face. Hagrid excelled in many things, but cooking wasn’t one of them.
“Alright, then! So yeh gonna tell me why yeh look so bummed?” He shoots a concerned glare at you.
“Just stressed out with school stuff, no biggie,” you smile reassuringly at him.
“James was just here the other day an’ he didn’ look quite alright ‘imself as well,” he shrugs.
“School is particularly hard this year I suppose,” you frown, getting up. “I should probably go, it’s getting quite late. See you, Hagrid!” You hug him goodbye.
Despite clearly having more to say about the previous subject, he hugs you back, leaving you breathless for a while given the strength he put into it. “Take care, Y/N!”
On your way back to the castle, you decide to make a little detour to the kitchen so you could help yourself of some leftovers from dinner.
“You’re one hard woman to track, love,” James’ voice startled you in the middle of a pitch-dark hallway.
“Merlin’s beard, James! Do you always have to sneak up on me like that?!” You whisper, taking your hand to your pounding heart.
The moonlight suddenly flooded through the windows, as the moon came out from behind a particularly massive cloud, and you saw a piece of paper clutched on James’ hand.
“I thought you had swore you’d never use that to keep tabs on me,” you point at the marauder’s map with your head.
James sighs heavily. “I know, but that was before you shut me down completely out of your life for no good reason. You’ve been even distancing yourself from Lily, Marlene, Sirius, Remus, everyone, Y/N! I’m worried about you. We all are. What’s going on with you, babe?” He cupped your face with his free hand and stared worryingly into your eyes, frowning. You could tell his mind was racing, trying to figure out what could possibly had happened to you.
You look away from his gaze and close your eyes, trying to come up with an excuse. Despite the little moment you two had shared in the astronomy tower, none of you had exactly being vocal about your feelings.
“You know what? We should make a trip to the kitchen and steal some chocolate pudding, what do you think? I bet some sugar in your system will make everything better!” He smiled brightly at you, starting a warm wave inside your chest.
“I believe it’s worth a try,” you smile sweetly back at him, unable to turn his puppy eyes down and doing your best to ignore the annoying butterflies in your stomach. You see, that’s the problem of finally admitting your feelings to yourself after keeping them hidden for so long: despite your best efforts to brush them off and hide them again, your body keeps giving you constant and awfully vivid reminders that they’re there.
***
The house-elves were happy to give you some snacks and sweets as the two of you entered the kitchen. You and James sat next to each other on the big island that laid in the middle of the room, eating, joking and throwing food at each other. Just like old times. The two of you didn’t leave the kitchen until you were both feeling stuffed.
Heading back to the Gryffindor tower, you were giggling at something James had said when you both heard footsteps nearby. Realizing he had left his invisibility cloak back in his dorm, James quickly pulled you to a very dark and hidden spot in the nearest corner of the hallway, behind an armor and beside a large shelf. Amidst the rush of having to improvise, he ended up with his both hands on your waist and his face almost glued to yours, since the space was limited and neither of you could move. His breath was uneven, just like yours, as he stared at your lips with a longing look on his eyes. Without thinking, he crashed his lips into yours, beginning a fueled, passionate kiss. You were immediately sent at a state of pure euphoria, all of your senses intensely and solely focused on this moment. Every inch of your body felt ecstatic, as if it had been waiting for this to happen for your entire life. As the boy deepened the kiss with a burning roughness you were already out of your mind, intoxicated by the feeling of having him touching you, kissing you. James slid one of his hands to your thigh and squeezed it slightly whilst taking his lips to your neck, leaving a trail of kisses, light bites and soft hickeys.
“Fuck, Jamie...” you suck the air between your teeth trying to suppress a moan, for James’ amusement. You could feel the satisfied grin he gave whilst his lips still sucked the skin of your neck, this time a little harder than before.
“Do you want me to stop?” He asks you mischievously, even though he already knew your answer.
“Don’t you dare to!” You shot desperately at him and pulled him closer, tangling your hand in his hair and pulling it roughly. You heard him gasp in surprise and pleasure and you bit your lower lip satisfied.
You honestly didn’t know what would’ve happened if it wasn’t for Filch’s interruption. “I know there are students out of bed! I heard giggles! And I bet it’s Potter, Black and Lupin!” He exclaims, breaking you and James out of your desire-driven trance. You quickly took James’ hands from your body and recomposed yourself.
“Argus, please, we’ve been looking around this hallway for the past fifteen minutes and didn’t find anyone! Just go to bed for Merlin’s sake!” You heard the annoyed voice of a sleepy Minerva McGonagall.
You and James stayed behind the armor for a little while after the two of you had heard their voices fading away, just in case.
“So, I think we need to talk about what just happened,” he says with a wide smirk, scratching his head.
“Nothing happened,” you’re quickly to point out. The guilty was eating you alive as you thought about Harry and Lily.
“Oh, but it would’ve, love. It really would,” he shoots you a cocky grin.
“Look, Jamie...” you start, lowering your head as you were unable to look him in the eyes. “That can never happen again, okay? Never.”
“Come on, love...” he says, getting closer to you and holding your chin gently between two fingers, lifting it so you could look at him. “You can’t deny that something is going on between you and I. And it has been for quite some time now,” he says tenderly, leaning in slowly.
You frown sadly and turn your head away, holding back the tears of hopelessness that were starting to form in your eyes. “What’s wrong, love? Don’t be afraid,” he cups your face with both of his hands, leading your gaze back at him.
Seeing the hopeful look he had in his eyes nearly broke you for good. “I can’t do this, Jamie...” you whisper weakly, not even remotely resembling the strong and fiery girl you’re known to be.
“Why not? Look, if that’s because of Lily, you have nothing to worry about. I never really liked her and I know you know that. In the beginning I was motivated by the challenge and a bet Sirius and I had made, of course, but then... about two years ago I realized who my heart had really chosen. I did nothing because I was too much of a coward, I’m afraid,” he states.
The tears were now rolling furiously down your face, despite your best efforts to control them. “James, please stop talking.”
“I need you to hear me, love. Just listen to me, would ya? Please,” he smiles nervously at you.
“You’re not making any sense, for Merlin’s sake! You belong with Lily, that’s how it’s supposed to be! You’ll fall in love, start dating, get married and have a kid!” You frown hopelessly.
“Y/N, did you hear what I just say? I can’t be with someone I don’t love! And I know you’re not saying that for Lily’s sake because she doesn’t fancy me either!”
“You wouldn’t understand, but believe me when I tell you this, Lily is your soulmate! Besides, I’m seeing someone,” you didn’t wanna lie to him nor hurt him like that, but you had to take his mind off of this somehow.
His face dropped as he let go of you. “Oh... That makes sense. You don’t want anything to do with me because you’re already in love with somebody else. I don’t blame you, I knew you wouldn’t wait around forever for me to man up,” James shrugged. “But you could’ve just saved your best mate here the embarrassment by mentioning it earlier, couldn’t you love?” He grins sadly, putting his hands at his pockets, and turned around, leaving you alone with an aching heart in the middle of the dark.
***
It had been a week since your little episode with James and now he was the one avoiding you. You knew you should clear the air with him, but you thought you could use this time to get your head straight and focus on what you really needed: finding a way out of this pace of time. Despite the fact that you were making things right with Lily and Marlene, your friendship with the marauders was going downhill. Sirius and Remus barely speak to you anymore since they were always by James’ side and you did break their friend’s heart. You sigh whilst looking yourself in the mirror after getting ready for your classes: you were the perfect depiction of misery. Heading down the stairs to begin your day, your feet suddenly stop when you hear a familiar voice coming from the common room. You didn’t mean to eavesdrop but you couldn’t face them right now.
“Come on, Prongs. Lighten up a bit, would you?” Sirius’ voice sounded concerned.
“I am very good Pads, can’t you see?” James answers him bitterly.
“I think you should talk to Y/N again, tell her how you really feel. You should try to work this out with her, mate,” Remus advises.
“I’ve already tried that, Moony! She didn’t care!”
“From what you’ve told us, you just reassured her that you don’t have any feelings for Lily. Have you tried telling her exactly how you feel about her?” Remus asks wisely.
“What good could it possibly make? She‘s already in love with someone that’s not me,” James sighs.
“I find it hard to believe,” Sirius states. “It’s just so obvious that she has feelings for you, I don’t know how your blind, stubborn self can’t see it! Plus, we’re her best friends and she never even once mentioned some guy she fancied to us.”
“That’s not the kind of thing a girl discusses with her male friends, Padfoot,” Remus says as if it was obvious. You imagined him rolling his eyes at your friend at the end of that sentence.
“No, but she would’ve mentioned it to Lily and Marlene...” James says with a realization tone.
“What are you waiting for? Go ask them then and find out who’s your competition!” Sirius exclaims vigorously. “That, of course, assuming that he’s real and Y/N isn’t making it up just so she can get herself rid of you.”
“I thought you said she had obvious feelings for me a while ago,” James says nervously.
“Don’t mind him, Prongs. He’s messing with you. Just go find Lily,” Remus says and you can hear the three of them exiting the room through the portrait hole.
“Bloody hell!” You curse at yourself, knowing very well that Lily would cover for you, much for her dismay, but you’d need to come up with a plan soon because James wouldn’t be fooled by that forever.
You wandered through the castle’s hallways with your mind racing, deciding to skip breakfast so you could think about your current situation. That seemed to be all you were doing lately. In fact, all you really wanted to do was scream in frustration and punch someone in the face. It was beyond unfair having to choose between a kind of an all-consuming feeling that happened once in a lifetime and the sake of your friends and their future as individuals and as a group. Being here was becoming heavier and heavier each day that went by. How much longer will you be able to resist James and deny your feelings? How much longer will you have to torture yourself? What if Dumbledore couldn’t fix whatever caused the time-turner to malfunction? What if you were bound to be trapped here for good? All of a sudden you felt sick to your stomach as a last and despairing thought crossed your mind: what if you had to witness James and Lily fall in love with each other? You felt like throwing up, so lost in your own distresses that you only noticed you had stumbled upon someone when you were both on the floor.
“Merlin’s beard, I’m so sorry!” You say whilst getting up.
“I think you forgot your head back in the tower, L/N,” Amos Diggory joked, sitting.
“I suppose I did,” you smile sheepishly at him, offering your hand to help him stand on his feet. “Again, I’m really sorry. You okay?”
“I’m fine, don’t worry,” he winks casually at you. “You don’t seem quite alright yourself on the other hand,” he adds, noticing the worried frown on your face.
“Oh, about that, I...” you start, stopping suddenly when you noticed James standing at the opposite end of the aisle, frowning at the sight of you and Diggory alone in an empty corridor, your hands still in the Hufflepuff’s. “Please just go with it, I’ll explain everything in a minute,” you whisper to Amos, as you grin widely whilst staring into his eyes and resting your wrists on the back of his neck, pretending you hadn’t seen the marauders glancing at your direction.
“Alright, I think I can carry on with whatever this is, but I have to say I’m genuinely intrigued,” he lifts a brow at you, grinning and leading his hands to your waist.
Before you could say anything else, James passes by the two of you like a hurricane, Sirius and Remus on his trail. You swore you could catch a disappointed look from Remus as they followed their friend.
“Potter seems to be in a bad mood today, doesn’t he?” Amos drags your attention back to him and you’re met by a suspicious look on his face. “I’m willing to bet you know why.”
“I really am sorry, I didn’t mean to suck you into my personal drama, I just... I don’t even know what to say,” you lean against the wall, sighing heavily.
“Try me, L/N. I’m a pretty good listener if you ask me,” he shrugs, leaning next to you. “Besides, you can trust me not to spill your secrets around,” he winks at you.
“I know you’re trustworthy, Diggory,” you smile at the thought of how much he reminded you of your late friend Cedric Diggory, who also happened to be his son. “You’re a Hufflepuff.”
He laughs genuinely at your joke. “Bring it on then, L/N.”
“Alright,” you sigh. “So, I don’t know if you can tell, but I kind of have feelings for James...”
“Yeah, I might have noticed that. And so did the entire school,” he bumps his shoulder into yours. “But go on.”
“I thought you had said you were a pretty good listener?” You raise your brows, crossing your arms in your chest.
“Sorry, please, continue,” he encourages you.
“Anyway, I do have feelings for him but I can’t act on them for a number of reasons that I can’t really talk about,” you close your eyes, resting your head on the cold wall. It felt good to take it off your chest for once, and opening up about this felt liberating.
Diggory stared at you confused. “Pardon me if I’m intruding, but I’d say your chances with the guy are pretty good. I mean, it’s quite clear that your feelings are reciprocated. For example, that day during quidditch practice when he saw the two of us talking... he did look pretty annoyed to me and today, well, you just saw what happened,” he shrugged.
“I know that he harbors feelings for me as well, and that’s the point. He can’t. We can’t have feelings for each other. I’m not his destiny and neither he is mine,” you tilt your head to your right a little so you could look at Amos.
“How can you possibly say that? We never know what tomorrow has in storage for us,” he states.
“Except that I do, and that’s exactly why I can’t encourage his feelings nor my own,” you sigh hopelessly.
“I suppose that’s the part you can’t discuss?” He smiles sympathetic at you.
“Exactly,” you frown sadly.
“How can I help you?” He asks suddenly. “Well I suppose that’s why you flirted with me a while ago, right?! You don’t strike me as the kind of girl who’d randomly throw her arms around a guy’s neck in empty hallways. Specially having told the guy in question that she has feelings for another one moments later,” he adds mockingly after seeing the confused expression on your face.
“Right,” you frown sheepishly. “I kinda told James a few days back that I was already seeing someone, right after he kissed me.”
“Wow, harsh,” he frowns playfully.
“Yeah, I know. I just didn’t know what else to do, I sort of panicked,” you shrug.
“You can count on me. But before I leave to class, I just need to ask you something. Is this secret motivation of yours really worth the trouble of sacrificing a potential relationship and a few friendships over? Think about it, L/N. See you in transfiguration in a few,” he says before disappearing into the castle, leaving you alone with your thoughts.

"Minerva saw Harry and Ron come out of the Chamber-- dirty, bruised, a crying Ginny held up warm between them. Madame Pomfrey swept Ginny away, and Dumbledore seized Harry and Ron, and Minerva let him.
She cornered Albus in his office later, because to yell at your subordinates or peers was something she considered unbearably uncouth; and he was her only superior. “How did we let that happen, Albus? How was our last line of defense Gilderoy Lockhart and two twelve year old boys?”
“And Fawkes,” added Albus, and she only didn’t hurl her hat at him because of the bow of his head over his desk, low and tired. The robed sag of his shoulders was familiar, and she knew how few people had been privy to it. To see Albus tired was a privilege. It made one afraid.
She didn’t say, “Why do you look like we’re still at war? I know that slouch. I know that sigh. Do you know something I don’t? Harry looks like James did, at the end, in the war-- are we at war, Albus? You tell me the truth.”
“We will have to write the Weasleys,” she said instead. “Apologize and explain all we can. I think Miss Weasley may have a tough time of it, and it will be better if her parents are prepared.”
“If you could handle that, Minerva.”
“Albus
”
“Thank you, Minerva,” he said, his voice kind, his voice firm and cheerful and final, and so she left him. A gouged leather journal sat small on the desk beside his curled left hand. Among all the detritus, paperwork, and empty saucers she didn’t spot it.
Minerva McGonagall had grown up on a farm-- dirt between her toes and morning chores like clockwork in the dim dawn light. She still liked getting up early, even if the chickens had been replaced by test papers and her father’s thick coffee by the house elves’ simple tea service.
She went back to her office. She reviewed the list of next year’s first years, noted which ones required in-person visits. She flipped through Transfiguration papers, turning her quill’s ink red with the flick of her wand. She pulled a blank parchment across the smooth surface of her desk and turned her ink back to black--
Molly and Arthur, she wrote, I am sorry to inform you that there has been an incident

During the war, they hadn’t been an army. They had been vigilantes. They had been the resistance. They had been angry kids and furious adults, and Albus. They had had no uniforms, badges, pensions, or marching orders, but after every death Minerva had sat herself down and she had written to the next of kin.
Ginevra Weasley was in the infirmary-- she was breathing, she was eleven, she had never been to war. But Minerva had written Molly Weasley eight times in her life-- seven Hogwarts acceptance letters, and one informing her of the death of her brothers, Gideon and Fabian Prewett.
The Hogwarts acceptance letters Minerva had drafted over the years far outweighed the number of deaths she had quietly, diligently documented-- apologizing for every one, I am sorry to inform you--
Well, they outnumbered them. She wasn’t sure anything could outweigh them.
Minerva had stumbled home, that first night they lost a friend. She had washed off the dirt, and the ash, and had realized that if she didn’t write Benjy’s mother then no one would. Dorcas had had her battle plans. Albus had had his long game, his diplomacy and his tricks. The Potters had been children, and Lupin not much better, and the Prewetts had had a mission that midnight. So she had sat down in her soft nightgown and wrote an apology in her best handwriting, and then she had gone to sleep.
Molly and Arthur, she wrote, now, and she felt heavy writing it, felt tired and old. I am sorry to inform you that there has been an incident

This Wizard!Dudley is about 30% Minerva McGonagall (and 15% in Nymphadora Tonks's) because spending 100% of your time in baby Dudley's terrible brain is exhausting.

Beyond the Veil
[Also on Ao3]
“No fewer than four Stunners had shot from the figures around the cabin toward Professor McGonagall. Halfway between cabin and castle the red beams col- lided with her. For a moment she looked luminous, illuminated by an eerie red glow, then was lifted right off her feet, landed hard on her back, and moved no more.” [Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix]
What if Minerva, in a coma at St.Mungo, had the chance to choose between staying or coming back – between living and dying – as Harry did in King’s Cross? ___________________________________
Minerva opened her eyes.
The sun was high above her head, but oddly enough she could look at it without being blinded by the dazzling light.
She was lying on a cold, flat surface, like a stone pavement of some sort. Determined to look around, she sat up cautiously, expecting to feel sore, but her body reacted smoothly at the command.
Only when she stretched her arms in front of her she realised what she was wearing. It had been ages since the last time she had put on her Gryffindor Quidditch uniform, and she couldn’t hold back a smile remembering her past as Chaser. Oh, how she had missed those youthful days...
Eventually, after what could have been a moment or an hour or a day, she lifted her gaze from her robes and looked around her.
Despite the sky above her head, she was in a closed space. Massive stone walls surrounded her from afar, delineating a huge hall that rang familiar, but had a surreal vibe in it. The colors were dimmed and the outlines shadowy, like immersed in some sort of cloudy mist – like made of some sort of cloudy mist – and Minerva went to check if her lenses were clean, only to realise she wasn’t wearing her reading glasses.
She stood up to explore the place, and after a couple of steps she saw that the hall hosted four long tables – yet, she could swear they weren’t there an instant ago.
Red gold banners were hanging from the walls, and Minerva was squinting her eyes to figure out the animal woven on them when she heard a wheezing in the air.
She turned on the spot and saw the Quaffle right in time to seize it.
“Nice catch, professor!” exclaimed the familiar voice of a young boy with messy black hair. He was smirking at her, and that smirk...
Was he...? But no, no, that wasn’t possible... He must have been...
“Harry?”
The boy chuckled.
“He looks like me, doesn’t he? But he has Lily’s eyes,” the boy said with a warm smile, his hazelnut eyes sparkling with fondness.
Minerva hadn’t seen that gaze in almost fifteen years, but she had missed it dearly.
“James
” she whispered, bewildered.
“In the flesh! At least I think so,” he chuckled.
“Is this... is this a dream?”
“Something like that, yeah. Nice decor, by the way,” he said with a wink, gesturing at the walls.
Finally, Minerva recognized the griffins on the banners, and she finally understood where she was – or seemed to be. In hindsight, she had probably known since the beginning, but for some inexplicable reasons she hadn’t grabbed the concept until then.
“Why are we at Hogwarts?” she asked, still looking around. The tables seemed more defined now, more real.
“How am I supposed to know?” said James, amused. “It’s your dream, professor. Not that I mind the choice, though
I kinda missed it here, you know?”
She thought Hogwarts had missed him as well, but she didn’t voice the sentiment, afraid of getting too emotional.
James was walking around, now, and Minerva let her gaze wander again, spotting an old, worn hat upon a three-legged stool. How many eleven years olds  she had let sit on it...
“We are here because Hogwarts is my home,” she whispered in understanding.
James nodded, his warm smile not leaving his lips. “I woke up at home too, when I died.”
Minerva winced, dreadful realisation coming to her. So, that was what had happened... that was the reason she was there. Those Stunning spells had killed her.
Well, her father would have been thrilled to know that even witches deserved a spot in Heaven, or whatever that was – it didn’t seem like Hell, at least.
“Shouldn’t the drapes be black in mourning, since I’m gone?” she joked.
It was a lame attempt, she knew that – she had just found she was dead, in her defence – but she still hadn’t expected James’ eyes widening in horror.
“Oh, Godric, no, no, I’m so sorry, you haven’t died yet, professor!” he clarified hastily, clutching her shoulders as to better convey the message.
She was astonished for an instant, before breathing a long sigh of relief. It took her another long second to grasp the full meaning of his words.
“Not yet?”
“Well...” mumbled James, running a hand through his messy hair – for heaven’s sake, she had forgotten that annoying habit of his. Even if they were discussing her own death, she couldn’t help smiling at the gesture.
“You can still choose to go back. Truly back.”
There was a soft, melancholic longing in his words, and Minerva didn’t need much time to guess why. “Are you saying that... you couldn’t choose?”
James sighed deeply, his features serious for the first time. “I got a different offer... One not as appealing.”
Minerva wasn’t sure she understood what he meant, and probably that showed on her face.
“They gave me the chance every wizard gets: becoming a ghost,” explained James with a shrug. “I wasn’t interested.”
Minerva wondered how hard it must have been for such a young, vibrant boy to turn out eternity.
“Why?” she asked.
“I thought it was better to wait few years to be forever with the people I love, rather than watch them live and die only to spend an eternity without them. And... I wanted to be there to welcome Lily and Harry, if
 if they couldn’t flee.”
Minerva felt a lump swelling in her throat, sadly aware that eventually Lily had to die too, to let Harry live.
“But why are we talking about me!” exclaimed James with forced cheerfulness, diverting her mind from those angst thoughts. “This is your moment, professor. Your choice.”
He was staring at her with intensity, and she felt oddly exposed under his gaze. It should have been a simple pick, she knew that, but it was so peaceful there, so beautifully calm...
She took a deep breath. “What would you do, in my place?”
“I’d go back.”
He had spoken without hesitation, and Minerva was taken aback by his conviction. “You’d leave Lily?”
He swallowed, his Adam’s apple bobbing up and down. “Yeah... I would. For the same reason you’re going to, if I know you well. Our kids.”
Of course, she realised. Even if Lily was there, Harry was not. Lily herself would have wanted James to go back to their son. That made sense for James, but she couldn’t see how it applied to her as well.
“I don’t have kids,” she said, even if James certainly knew.
“Are you sure?” he retorted, gesturing at the long tables with a knowing smile.
Minerva brought a hand to her heart when she saw the benches crowded with faceless teens wearing their Hogwarts uniform. The lovely scent of the feast treats and the joyful noise of the students rose in the air, filling her nostrils and hears, and warming her heart. Minerva hadn’t even realised of how unusually quite the Great Hall had been until then.
“I’m sure they still need their Transfiguration teacher, don’t you think?”
At those words, Minerva began recognising the happy features of her students.
She instinctively knew they would disappear if she got too close, so she watched them from afar, walking back and forth along the spot usually occupied by the teachers’ table.
They all sat randomly mixed together: the youngest with the oldest, fathers with sons, present students with past ones, alive and dead, Gryffindors and Slytherins. They all looked like teens, even those that by now had kids at Hogwarts of their own.
“That’s me!” grinned James, pointing at his other self. “And that beauty beside me... is she Ginny Weasley?” he asked uncertain, and Minerva smiled fondly when she recognised the girl.
“No, that’s Molly Prewett, her mother.”
James stilled, and Minerva could see his eyes getting misty. “And what a wonderful mother she is.”
Minerva laid a hand on his shoulder, giving it a little squeeze. “The best one Harry could have hoped for,” she murmured against the lump in her throat. “Beside her own, of course.”
James rub two fingers on his eyes, pushing his glasses upwards, and to give him a moment to recollect Minerva resumed looking at the students. Her heart skipped a beat when she saw Cedric Diggory setting with his father Amos.
This time it was James to put a comforting hand on her shoulder, and Minerva realised she had been staring at them for too long. She took a deep breath and let her gaze wander to another table, and a moment later her eyes fell upon a lighting shaped scar.
“Look at that boy,” she said to James with amusement, pointing at Harry. “I bet you can recognise him.”
“Well, he does have something familiar, now that you point that out,” joked James, but she could see his eyes gleaming. “Never seen those hideous hair before, though,” he added with a smirk, and she chuckled despite herself.
Her smile suddenly faded when she saw the guy in front of him.
“Regulus Black,” she murmured, shaking her head. “Poor, silly boy... I always wondered if I could have done more...”
James took a deep breath. “Yeah, I guess we all wondered. But at the end, he made his own choices, as everybody else.”
“He was just a kid...”
“We all were,” said James. “They all are,” he added, his gaze fixed on Harry.
She looked at the two boys again, and she noticed that they were sitting alone, now. To her surprise, they were chatting animatedly, but despite the renewed quite in the hall, they were too far to be heard.
“I wonder what they’re talking about
”
“I bet they’re saying that Seeking is the best thing in the world, but as incredibly skilled Chasers we both know that’s only a mere illusion,” said James with a smirk.
Minerva smiled. “Well, I’m afraid I must agree. Harry’s still a better flyer than you, though,” she teased fondly.
“No way!” exclaimed James, comically widening his eyes and mouth in pretended shock. “He’s only got a better broom!”
“Sure, if that’s what you want to believe,” she played along, knowing perfectly well how proud James must have been for his son talent.
“For the record, Sirius has never bought me a broom, the tosser. Nor you/, for that matter,” he added with a fake pout, and Minerva felt slightly embarrassed. Of course James hadn’t missed that she had personally paid for that Nimbus, probably breaking several unwritten Hogwarts ethical rules in the process – not that Albus had minded.
She would do it again in a heart beat, anyway, and according to James amused expression, he was perfectly aware.
“Well, what can I say?” she shrugged. “It would have been a pity to waste all that talent on a school broom.”
“Indeed,” nodded James. He was apparently serious, but she could see his lips twitching, and finally he let go the pretense and grinned. “I’m sure that had nothing to do with Harry being the son of your favorite and most talented student ever.”
“Lily was indeed exceptional,” she said, trying to keep her expression stern as well – and failing spectacularly.
“Oh, please. We both know she is too rubbish at Quidditch to be your favorite. And she clearly isn’t the most talented, or should I remind you that I was younger than you when I became an Animagus? And I didn’t even need Dumbledore holding my hand to do it,” teased James. “Pretty sure that seals the deal.”
She shook her head in amusement, recalling her stunned shock the day Albus told her what the so called ‘Marauders’ had illegally accomplished. Looking at James smugness, though, a way older memory popped in her head.
“I can’t believe I’m saying it, but –”
“Merlin, are you really about to admit I was your favorite student? All those years trying to make you say it, and strict logic plus a near-death experience was all you needed?”
“Oh, no, that’s nowhere near enough,” she smiled. “I was simply admitting that becoming an Animagus at fifteen without a proper guidance is a rather impressive achievement, after all.” She almost added that she had no idea how they managed to teach Peter Pettigrew as well, but she cut her tongue right in time. “I will also admit I was quite upset when you so flippantly refused my offer to help you becoming an Animagus yourself. I believe you said something as Unlike you, professor, I don’t need a tacky pretext to show myself off in my birthday suit during random Transfiguration lessons. But if that what’s work for you, who am I to judge?”
James laughed with mirth, clearly delighted. “Godric, that’s pretty accurate, you know? I had to make sure you weren’t going to pressure on the matter ever again. Worth all the night of detention, if you ask me.”
“Oh, I don’t doubt it,” she said with a fond smile. “So, would have you accepted my offer, if you hadn’t learnt it already?”
“Of course I would have! I’d never refuse such an interesting learning experience offered by my favorite teacher. See, not that hard to say,” he winked, and Minerva shook her head in amused disbelief. Oh, she had really forgotten what this boy could do to her

She was about to admit that he was indeed the most talented Transfiguration student she had ever taught when the sky turned darker, the sun setting on the West.
James put his hand on her shoulder yet again. “I guess it’s time to make your choice, professor,” he said kindly.
“I guess it is,” she agreed. “So, how is this going to work?”
“You just have to choose, I think.”
“You think?”
“It’s my first time doing this welcoming thing! And nobody bothered to told me the technicalities, for the record; the good news is, I’m definitely smart enough to figure it out,” he winked.
But this time his mirth didn’t reach her. It had been lovely staying here with James, and the time spent together wasn’t nearly long enough, but she finally knew what she had to do, and that meant she had to say goodbye.
She looked at him with sadness, and she gasped when he hugged her tightly, almost lifting her from the floor.
He let her go too soon, and fixed his gaze on hers.
“Harry is a fine young man, isn’t he?” he asked with longing.
“The finest.”
“And you’ll take care of him, right?”
“I’ve always had, James.”
“I kno –”
“Merlin, I bet this is one of those scenes you can only see as dead,” said a wry voice in the distance.
Minerva and James turned towards it to find a young boy of breath-taking beauty looking at them in amusement.
“You know, I didn’t expect the world beyond the Veil to look like Hogwarts,” he said matter-of-factly. “And I definitely didn’t expect you to be there, professor. Killer outfit, by the way,” he added with a wink, and she felt her eyes watering.
“Padfoot
” whispered James, his voice cracking with grief.
“I did expect a warmer welcome, though,” he playfully scolded James. “And there’s no need to look so gloomy, you’d think somebody died.”
Sirius was the only one to find the joke amusing.
“What happened?” asked Minerva with a lump in her throat.
“I could ask the same about you, professor.”
“She’s not here to stay,” said James.
“Well, I am. A courtesy of my dearest cousin.”
Sirius was grinning, but Minerva felt her chest heavy, suddenly aware that she had another tough goodbye to attend, now. She wished she could switch places, but she was sure it didn’t work like that.
“Anyway, esteemed professor,” added Sirius with pompous humor, bowing slightly at her, “it’s rather obvious I happened across your missed demise, and I humbly beg forgiveness for the inconvenient intrusion.”
A tiny smile finally twitched her lips. “Forgiveness granted,” she conceded with a nod.
“But since I’m here,” said Sirius, “it would be an honor to run with you one last time.”
A second later he turned in a huge, black dog, who barked playfully and wagged his tail. Minerva understood, and soon beside the dog appeared a tabby cat with spectacle markings around her eyes. It was dark, now, and their pupils gleamed brightly into the night.
When a majestic stag joined them, they moved forward between the central tables, the stone under their paws and hoofs turning in damp grass, the walls of the castle fading away like mist.
On the distance stood the Whomping Willow, its branches motionless, its leaves gently blowing in the wind. The dog barked cheerfully and raced towards it, urging the others to join him, and while the cat was supposed to be the slower and the stag the faster, somehow they all kept running side by side, and nobody was left behind.
When they got close to the Willow, the branches began fidgeting fiercely, but the tabby leapt easily among them and pushed the knot at the base of the trunk.
The tree went still, and stag and dog lied down near the cat, who brushed their fur with her paw and glanced at them one last time, before vanishing in the secret passage.
***
“Can you squeeze my hand, professor?”
Minerva somehow sensed that remote request and made an effort to oblige it, managing to clench her fingers with fair strength.
“Good, very good! Now, can you try opening your eyes for me?” asked the feminine voice.
Minerva painfully lifted her eyelids, and then blinked a few times before adjusting to the light. She was in an aseptic hospital room, and against the white walls and furniture the bright spot of color of a Quaffle easily caught her gaze. Minerva recalled holding one at the beginning of her odd dream, but she couldn’t remember ever dropping it.
“A gift from Gwenog Jones, professor,” said the Healer with a warm smile. Minerva was almost moved when she recognised her as a former Ravenclaw student. “And a lot of people sent you flowers, but since a patient was strangled by a Devil’s Snare few months ago we have to send them back. Hospital policy, I’m afraid, but we put the notes in your drawer.”
Minerva nodded politely, but she really couldn’t care about the flowers, nor the notes.
“Can I hold it?” she asked, looking longingly at the ball. Any other day she would have been thrilled to receive a gift from her favorite team’s captain – another former student of her – but all Minerva could think about right now was that James Potter had given her that Quaffle.
*
Minerva had been conscious for less than an hour when a silver phoenix appeared in her room and Dumbledore’s voice filled the air, to rejoice for her awakening and update her on the last developments.
Only at the end he announced the terrible news of Sirius’s death.
Only then she finally realised it wasn’t just a dream.
***
The dog and the stag ran and played in the grass until exhaustion, the full moon lightening their steps. Eventually, they collapsed under the usual beech near the shores of the Black Lake, turning in their human forms.
They stayed silent for a while, catching their breath and enjoying the chill of the night.
Sirius was the first to break the quiet.
“I’m a shitty godfather,” he blurted out.
“Harry adores you” said James softly, nonplussed.
Sirius took a deep breath, his eyes fixed on the ground. “How wrong it is that I’m happy to see you, rather than miserable because I can’t be at his side?”
James shook his head. “It’s ok, Padfoot. I missed you too.”
Sirius was silent for a while, before gathering the courage to speak again. “I’m sorry I made you doubt Moony,” he whispered.
“I know.”
“If I hadn’t suggested the exchange
”
“Voldemort wouldn’t have fallen, and the war wouldn’t have ended. Who knows how many innocents would have died because of it.”
They got quite again, and their gaze wandered to the stars.
“Sirius is particularly bright, tonight,” said James, pointing at it.
Sirius snorted.
“Ow!” exclaimed James, playfully shoving him in the shoulder. “Why are you laughing at me, you sod? Have a bit of respect for the older dead!”
“Sirius is particularly bright, tonight,” mimicked Sirius with a high-pitched tone. “Did you kill time taking lessons from the centaurs?”
“I tried, but they sadly refused my entry in the herd. I had to be content with snogging Lily.”
Sirius laughed out loud. “Too bad, eh?”
“Yeah, what a shame,” grinned James. “I bet the centaurs were too envy of my stunning legs to accept me, anyway. They’re quite sensitive, you know?”
“It’s their loss, mate.”
“I guess they also felt threatened by my stunning antlers.”
“Speaking of antlers – or lack thereof – where’s Lily?”
“She’ll be here soon.”
“How soon? I’m kinda offended that she hasn’t shown up yet, if you ask me.”
“You got Minnie, though.”
“She has wrinkles.”
“Well, she hadn’t this afternoon.”
“But she does. And don’t think I didn’t notice you changing the subject. Where’s Lily?”
“I told you, she’ll come.”
“Not if you’re not shagging her,” smirked Sirius. “Or did she dump you for a centaur?”
“I thought we’d already settled that having antlers is definitely cooler?”
“Maybe. Now, where is she?”
James sighed. “She went looking for someone.”
“You really want to make this hard, don’t you?”
James raised his hands, defeated. “Ok, ok, I’ll tell you
but only if you promise you’ll listen to everything he’s got to say.”
“It’s a he, then. Any other clue?”
“Padfoot,” scolded James.
Sirius looked at him with suspicious, but he nodded eventually. “Yeah, ok, whatever. I promise. Now, who is it?”
James smiled enigmatically. “Regulus is particularly bright too.”

Note
super cool character headcanons meme - all four marauders and/or Dumbledore and McG
ALL OF THE ABOVE
Okay this is gonna be under the cut because this is gonna be a looooooooooong post.
Let’s start with the Marauders
Sirius Black
2-4 songs that are probably on their iPod
Obviously he doesn’t use an iPod, but I’d like to imagine he’d be into the wizarding equivalent of punk. Now of course, he’s the right age to be around right at the beginning of the scene and while I imagine wizarding music would be somewhat separate from muggle music, Sirius would probably sneak out to a muggle club just because it would piss off his family.
In any case he would definitely be listening to the wizarding equivalent of Queen, the Sex Pistols, the Damned, and David Bowie. Well, he’s just be listening to David Bowie. David Bowie was a wizard and there is nothing anyone can say to convince me otherwise. As for specific songs I’ll just throw out a couple muggle ones I can see him getting into:
London Calling-The ClashBlitzkrieg Bop-RamonesKiller Queen-QueenStarman-David Bowie
the one place they sometimes end up falling asleep — where they’re not supposed to
Oh man, where is this kid not falling asleep? He can fall asleep anytime, anyplace, and under any conditions. Though I think he’d tend to doze off right in the middle of the hallway. He’s between classes and sleepy? Why bother heading back to Gryffindor tower when there’s hardly any traffic in the Charms corridor this time of day?
I think he’d also turn into a dog and sleep under James’, Remus’, and/or Peter’s bed if he thought he could get away with it.
the game they’d destroy everyone else at
Surprisingly I’d think he’d be really good at charades. He’s just so expressive.
the emoticon they’d use most often
Smiling poop
what they act like when they haven’t had enough sleep
Falling asleep everywhere, extremely out of it, and grumpy. He slumps down on his hands and will just flip off anyone who tries to talk to him.
their preferred hot beverage on really cold nights. or mornings. or whenever.
Firewhiskey
how they like to comfort/care for themselves when they’re in a slump
I suspect he’d like to be a dog. I actually headcannon that this is a coping mechanism to deal with the trauma from his abusive family, and that was how he originally realized it might be a good strategy in Azkaban. He becomes a dog and naps in the sun.
Otherwiese plays obnoxiously loud music and jumps about for a while.
what they wanted to be when they grew up
Not their parents
their favorite kind of weather
Storms
thoughts on their singing voice (decent? terrible? soprano? alto?)
Oh it’s
not the best. Stealing from your answer I think he sounds like he’s howling or barking. Still tried to get James, Remus, and Peter to form a band with him though.
how/what they like to draw or doodle
Goofy pictures or obscenities, especially when in his friends’ line of sight. He liked to try and get Remus to laugh during class with his doodles. It rarely worked. James however, was always cracking up. Also stealing from you again, he definitely doodles the smiling poop emoji.
James Potter
2-4 songs that are probably on their iPod
Like Sirius I could see James being into punk, though not as much. He’d accompany Sirius on his excursions to underground shows, but more out of a quiet curiosity. He’s really more of a prog-rock. He’s definitely really into Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin. He also listens to Bowie.
So for James:
Black Dog-Led ZeppelinDogs-Pink FloydBaba O’Riley-The WhoRebel Rebel-David Bowie
the one place they sometimes end up falling asleep — where they’re not supposed to
Like Sirius, James is pretty good at falling asleep when and wherever he can, though he’s not just gonna pass out in a hallway. His favorite forbidden sleep spot is in the library when he’s meant to be studying. Especially if Remus is there to be annoyed.
the game they’d destroy everyone else at
Quidditch
the emoticon they’d use most often
Winking
what they act like when they haven’t had enough sleep
Just miserable. You have to drag him everywhere.
their preferred hot beverage on really cold nights. or mornings. or whenever.
Butterbeer
how they like to comfort/care for themselves when they’re in a slump
Honestly? He’s likely to take out his frustrations on whatever poor sap’s nearest. Though he started to grow out of that in his later years at Hogwarts. He’s since found listening to music while he stares at the ceiling and noshes on chocolate frogs a much better coping mechanism. That and a good broomstick flight.
what they wanted to be when they grew up
Pro Quidditch player
their favorite kind of weather
Bright, blustery days
thoughts on their singing voice (decent? terrible? soprano? alto?)
Nothing special. He can carry a tune, but just barely
how/what they like to draw or doodle
Abstract shapes and repetitive patterns. He finds it soothing.
Remus Lupin
2-4 songs that are probably on their iPod
Remus has fairly eclectic tastes and unlike James and Sirius he’d pretty much only listen to wizarding music. He’s more of a folk and folk-revival type of person. Well that and whatever the equivalent of Fleetwood Mac is in the wizarding world (though we all know Stevie Nicks is a witch).
Rhiannon-Fleetwood MacBattle of Evermore-Led ZeppelinWitch’s Promise-Jethro TullMoonage Daydream-David Bowie
the one place they sometimes end up falling asleep — where they’re not supposed to
Aside from the train? Remus likes to doze off outside under the trees on lazy sunny days.
the game they’d destroy everyone else at
Trivial pursuit/any pub quiz ever
the emoticon they’d use most often
O_O
what they act like when they haven’t had enough sleep
Poor thing is just kinda a zombie. Wanders around in a daze, sometimes the other Marauders have to sort of guide him to class.
their preferred hot beverage on really cold nights. or mornings. or whenever.
Tea or hot cocoa
how they like to comfort/care for themselves when they’re in a slump
Chocolate and a good book
what they wanted to be when they grew up
Honestly his childhood was sort of
strange what with being a werewolf and all. He rarely had a concrete image of his adulthood because he had trouble seeing past his condition. He did have fantasies of being an author for a while though.
their favorite kind of weather
Mild, soft sunlight interspersed with periods of light showers
thoughts on their singing voice (decent? terrible? soprano? alto?)
I actually think Remus has quite a nice voice, though he rarely sings
how/what they like to draw or doodle
Oddly elaborate scrolling patterns. Primarily of plants and flowers.
Peter Pettigrew
2-4 songs that are probably on their iPod
Like Remus Peter mostly listens to wizarding music, his tastes tend to be fairly eclectic in tone. Also for some reason I think he’d be pretty into the Rolling Stones? Yeah, I dunno either.
(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction-The Rolling StonesMy Generation-The WhoStairway to Heaven-Lep ZeppelinWord on a Wing-David Bowie
the one place they sometimes end up falling asleep — where they’re not supposed to
I actually think Peter would have a difficult time sleeping and is the least likely to just doze off where ever. On the rare occasions he does decide to let himself drift off he, like James, is likely to fall asleep in the library.
the game they’d destroy everyone else at
Poker
the emoticon they’d use most often
Simple smiley
what they act like when they haven’t had enough sleep
Suggestible and just kinda out of it. Like Remus he’s gonna just drift through the day.
their preferred hot beverage on really cold nights. or mornings. or whenever.
Butterbeer
how they like to comfort/care for themselves when they’re in a slump
Very long naps under a heavy pile of blankets
what they wanted to be when they grew up
Though it certainly wouldn’t suit him young Peter dreamed of being an Auror
their favorite kind of weather
Warm, sunny days
thoughts on their singing voice (decent? terrible? soprano? alto?)
Nothing special, he has difficulty singing loudly
how/what they like to draw or doodle
Really elaborate doodles, more like illustrations. He’s quite good actually.
Albus Dumbledore
2-4 songs that are probably on their iPod
Dude has been around for a very long time and has very eclectic tastes in music. Seriously, he’s all over the place.
Gotterdammerung, it’s always difficult to separate out operas but I have the third act in mind-Richard WagnerIt’s Always You-Frank SinatraEleanor Rigby-The BeatlesSpace Oddity-David Bowie
the one place they sometimes end up falling asleep — where they’re not supposed to
He’s pretty good at falling asleep wherever, but his most likely dozing place is his office (wherever it happens to be) or else out by the lake.
the game they’d destroy everyone else at
Risk
the emoticon they’d use most often
Unicorn
what they act like when they haven’t had enough sleep
Goofy, their propensity to silly jokes and puns goes through the roof
their preferred hot beverage on really cold nights. or mornings. or whenever.
Butterbeer
how they like to comfort/care for themselves when they’re in a slump
Organizing his sock collection while munching on some lemon drops
what they wanted to be when they grew up
Great
their favorite kind of weather
Partially cloudy and mild
thoughts on their singing voice (decent? terrible? soprano? alto?)
Very fine, soothing and soft
how/what they like to draw or doodle
He’s not the greatest artist but he likes drawing people
Minerva McGonagall
2-4 songs that are probably on their iPod
Though she mostly like wizarding music she actually would listen to a surprising amount of muggle stuff.
What a Little Moonlight Can Do-Billie HolidayPiece of My Heart-Janis JoplinThou Hast Left Me Every Jamie-Karine PolwartHeroes-David Bowie
the one place they sometimes end up falling asleep — where they’re not supposed to
Hahahahahaaaaa
oh man, I cannot imagine McGonagall falling asleep when she’s not supposed to, but perhaps a little catnap by her office window.
the game they’d destroy everyone else at
Most things really, but for some reason I see her as a pretty fierce bridge player
the emoticon they’d use most often
Not much for emoticons. Perhaps the thumbs up once when she wants to appear approachable. It backfires horribly.
what they act like when they haven’t had enough sleep
Shot, cranky, sharp
their preferred hot beverage on really cold nights. or mornings. or whenever.
Tea
how they like to comfort/care for themselves when they’re in a slump
A long walk through a hilly landscape
what they wanted to be when they grew up
PM
their favorite kind of weather
Wild, windy, and cloudy
thoughts on their singing voice (decent? terrible? soprano? alto?)
Pretty good, warm and lilting. She rarely sings.
how/what they like to draw or doodle
Small surprisingly detailed landscapes or animals. Lots of crosshatching.

001. the close friendship - {desired/open}
maybe you were friends during your days at Hogwarts, maybe you’ve pursued a friendship with her after your own graduation, or maybe you’ve gotten to know her during your time as fellow members of the Order. whatever it is, if you’ve wormed your way into this category, it’s for life, and you’re one of the lucky few that gets to see the most vulnerable moments in minerva’s life. you’d to anything to protect her, and it’s certain the feeling’s mutual.
002. the soul mate - {desired/open}
for so long, minerva’s been pining over the muggle love she gave up, but it wasn’t until you came waltzing into her life that she realized she was ready to give her heart again. maybe you’ve known her forever or maybe you weren’t on her radar at all, but if she’s given her heart to you now, you have it for good.
003. goodbye, my almost lover - {open}
once upon a time, you had her heart. maybe it was in her younger days, when she was more open and vulnerable. maybe you shared a kiss, or maybe you shared something deeper. whatever it was, it’s sure she hasn’t forgotten you, no matter how much time has passed. what might happen when you stumble across one another again?
004. the favorite student - {lily evans, amos diggory, requests}
she may have been a tough teacher, but there was something about her that you liked, and somehow you won her over too. though she didn’t go easy on you, she showed you a more tender side that not everyone gets to see. now that you’ve left Hogwarts you still keep in touch, and that student/teacher relationship is beginning to blossom into more of a friendship.
005. i will protect you - {katrina parkinson, davina selwyn, requests}
maybe you were close to her while you were at Hogwarts, or maybe you were a thorn in her side. either way, now that you’ve made the tough choices, she’s become your greatest supporter. she’ll do whatever it takes to protect you and fight for you, which means that you’re privileged enough to see the more motherly side of her.
006. the soft spot - {sirius black, james potter, fabian prewett, amos diggory, requests}
chances are, you were a troublemaker during your Hogwarts days, but despite all the hell you might have put her through, there’s something about you that she can’t help but like. now that she no longer has to supervise your detentions, she’s free to smile at your antics and respond to your teasing in kind, and she really enjoys that.
007. the thorn in my side - {walburga black, requests}
whether you were a disrespectful student or an obnoxious parent, there’s something about you that rubs minerva the wrong way. she tries her best to be cordial to you for the sake of propriety, but sometimes her scottish temper gets the best of her. maybe you find it amusing to poke at her or maybe you despise her as much as she does you. whatever it is, sparks are sure to fly from her eyes when she interacts with you.
008. the enemy - {orion black, requests}
maybe you’ve personally affronted her, or (more likely) maybe you’ve gone after someone she loves. whatever it is, you’re on her hit list, and there’s nothing she wouldn’t do to keep you from striking again.
009. the one that got away/opposite sides - {severus snape, requests}
she may not show it, but nothing haunts minerva more than when she has to face a former student on the battlefield. maybe she had her eye on you during your hogwarts days, or maybe you drove her nuts. either way, chances are she blames herself for where you are today.
010. the one that haunts my nightmares - {open}
it takes quite a bit to unnerve the formidable minerva mcgonagall, but somehow you’ve scarred her. maybe you got the upper hand in a battle, or maybe you were part of the kidnapping that still haunts her sleep. whatever it may be, you’re one of the few people that causes chills of fear to run through her, and if you were to catch on to that, you would certainly use it to your advantage.

HEY, there is a link for AO3 now :)
