The story takes place several hundred years after Phoenix Drop's era, in the City of O'Khasis (you'll learn why it's called that later on)

As I’m rewatching MCD S2 with friends, I’ve been calling it Laurance’s Crash-Out Arc (for obvious reasons), but it turns out I’m also crashing out because I keep getting reminded why Aaron was my favorite character. 🙃

Laurance is an unreasonably powerful Shadow Knight. Gene says so himself, claiming he would kill Laurance but he is so powerful it would be a shame to waste that potential. Additionally, it seems the only reason Laurance is the one in charge of the Nether Rebellion is because he bested Zenix in a fight. Which is Absurd because not only has Zenix been a shadow knight MUCH longer than Laurance (all the years prior + 15 year gap), he's been a shadow knight for a larger portion of his life (implied to have been transformed as a child), AND Zenix has absorbed Several other shadow knights to increase his power, AND Laurance, once again, hasn't even completed his full transformation!!!

Chapter One: Into the Old Woods

“Sweetheart! It's time to wake up!”

Flashes of skyscraper trees, a tiny village, a stone statue.

“Your breakfast is going to get cold!”

People they didn't recognize, all dressed in the same uniforms.

“Cori! Get downstairs or I'll eat all this myself!” Cori jolted up from their strange dreams yet again, nearly smacking their head on the headboard on their way up.

“Coming mom!” they called out, sliding off the bed.

“Hmm. . . Purple and black hoodie should work for today,” Cori said quietly, grabbing some clothes out of their closet and getting themselves dressed.

“Took you long enough sweetheart,” their mother said with a laugh as they made their way downstairs.

“Hey! It's the weekend! I don't have any job interviews scheduled!” Cori said.

“I know I know, I'm just teasing! I know you've got your little thing at the movies tonight with Porter and Ophelia,” said their mother, setting out plates of breakfast food for the two of them.

“Well it's the last night they're playing it, so if we don't go now we'll have to wait for it to go on stream,” Cori said.

“And what did you say this movie was called again?” their mother asked, raising an eyebrow. Cori tightened their grip on their fork.

“Uuuuhhhh- Five Nights at Freddy's 8-” they replied, hoping their mother wouldn't look it up later.

“Alright. . . Just don't get any ideas about going past the wall,” Cori nodded along, avoiding making direct eye contact.

“And don't forget to pick up your diploma from O'Khasis State University either, I want to share it on Minebook,”

“Mooooommmm- you already shared a bunch of photos from graduation! Why do you need more of them?” Cori groaned.

“Because I'm proud of my baby's accomplishments?” Hyacinth responded.

“Fine- fine I'll pick it up after breakfast or whatever,” Cori replied.

“Thank you sweetheart,” Hyacinth collected the remaining dirty dishes after they finished breakfast. Cori grabbed their messenger bag from the coat rack next to the door and left the apartment.

Ro'Meave Apartments was admittedly one of the nicer apartments in the area, even if it had nothing on the O'Khasis City Apartments complex. At least this one didn't have constant leaking ceilings like some of the lower city areas.

It was raining, and pretty heavily, which was going to suck for them to walk in, but Cori could power through it with a decently sized umbrella.

The city of O'khasis was known for many things, but it's key component seemed to be the overwhelming and unsettling feeling of loneliness that permeated the area. A sense of dread that made itself known through near-persistent fog.

OSU wasn't necessarily the most prestigious university in the city, it was expensive sure, but everything in O'Khasis was kind of expensive, especially given all the new rules that had recently been put in place- curfews- more cops by the walls- these days it felt like nobody was allowed in or out.

Cori walked up to the main gates, punching their old ID number into the panel and watching as the gilded halls opened back up.

“I'm here to pick up my diploma, Cori Azalea Irenia, Politics Major,” Cori said, staring up at the woman at the front desk. The woman seated at the desk, a woman with a likeness more akin to a withered old bird than a person, stared down at them for a long while.

“Be careful, child, lest the High Lord of O'Khasis think you much too ambitious,” said the woman. Cori nodded as they took the scroll, shrugging off the ominous tone as they left the campus. They pulled out their phone and scrolled to the group chat with Porter and Ophelia.

You: Y'all got the stuff for tonight?

Porter: yeah, Fifi's been researching a bunch of freaky shit about the wall section near the cinema

Ophelia: I thought I told you not to call me Fifi.

Porter: well I think it's cute

Ophelia: You are insufferable, Porter.

Porter: jokes on you I don't know how to read <3

Ophelia: We were both English majors.

Porter: touche, Fifi

You: ok lovebirds are we ready to go for tonight or not

Ophelia: I am not a bird, but I am ready for tonight.

Porter: being a bird sounds like fun, but so does causing problems for stuffy old High Lord Maeve.

Ophelia: Did you know his name derives from one of the original Lord's of O'Khasis from something called the MCD era.

Porter: I never should've let you take that archival assistant job

Cori snickered and put their phone back in their bag. Tonight, everything was going to change, they could feel it.

They dropped their messenger bag on the floor next to their desk after trudging back up to their room.

“Phoenix. . . Phoenix. . . Nothing, again- damnit! If that stupid word is going to show up so often in my dreams it could do me a favor and appear in a search engine!” Cori cover their face, glaring through the gap in their fingers at the screen in front of them.

There was something there- there had to be! They knew it! But right there in bright red lettering ‘this search term is not available in your area’. Gods forbid they were capable of getting answers to cryptic dreamy bullshit.

But even still, searching up information on their cryptic dreams was all Cori did until it was finally time.

“I'll be home in a few hours mom!” Cori said, pulling up the hood of their jacket and moving the rabbit ears that had flopped over out of their face.

“Be careful! It's supposed to storm tonight!” Hyacinth called after them.

Umbrella clutched tightly in hand, Cori made their way to the old cinema, then walked straight past it towards the back of the dilapidated building.

“No guards? Seriously?” They asked as they came up on Porter and Ophelia.

“Not a one, must think this side of town is too much of a safety hazard,” Porter replied.

“Whatever it is, let's just get this wall busted,” Cori said, approaching the wall. They ran their hands across the stone, looking for some sort of chip until-

“Ow! Shit-” they hissed, holding their bloodied hand as they flinched away from whatever part of the wall they'd cut it on.

“Holy shit- it- its fucking moving-” Porter said.

“Fascinating- I've cut my hand on the stones loads of times and they've never moved. . .” Ophelia said.

“Yeah yeah- we'll evaluate magic blood stuff later- let's go!” Porter said, taking off into the woods.

Cori looked over at Ophelia, the expression on it's face turning from one of awe to one of exasperation at Porter's hastiness.

“Well- it's now or never, and we've gotta catch him somehow,” Cori said, shrugging.

And with a few unsteady steps, they breached the wall, and reached the woods.

Small lore bits

Descendants of Irene have revamped lore and are far more important to the story

Levin has abilities, but they aren't unlocked completely until some time after the time skip

I'm thinking of giving him 2-3 abilities: Shield Construction (due to parentage and lore 👀), water manipulation/waterbending, and lightning manipulation (I'm thinking of having him gain it from being struck by lightning ((ALSO a fun reference for how RARE it is for players to get struck by lightning and since DOI will have an actual connection to Irene[player], they get the ups and downs of it)))

After the O'Khasis/Scaleswind VS Phoenix Drop War, all the bodies that had been killed/drowned in the ocean slowly turned into drowned (mob).

The drowned (plus other magical events-areas) end up creating tridents

Yeah, Levin is getting a trident, and he's gonna be channeling the oceans/water/lightning through it (channeling enchantment :)). He plus Malachi will garner quite the reputation... which will also be another reason why Trall [the bandit Michi sold Levin, Malachi, and Zoey too] and others would be interested in them ((another callback to why Irene kept her family a secret))

Levin, trying to protect the last bits of the village as well as his family, ends up flooding parts of Phoenix Drop to cut off intruders and bandits.

With the extra water plus the swamp/Mangrove swamp of the burned down Meteli, the waterways become more dangerous but also extremely helpful

More slimes, frogs, drowned, other water mobs allow for more items to trade, and because Malachi is a trader as well as a monster hunter, it's an added bonus/trade boost. (These bois are doing their BEST to provide for the village ((I just realized I might be projecting onto them by making these children take care of their family as much as they can and having to grow up quicker-more serious oop-)))

That's all for right now. I just wanted to get it down while it's fresh. I'll have to make a Malachi and Levin rewrite post soon, so keep an eye out for that! :D

Some sci-fi au ideas because the pest(/pos), @erionlextib asked me to share. There aren’t many but I feel like basic world set up needs to come before anything else.

Okay so Ru’Aun is a huge gas giant with a fuck load of moons, as well as a large ring. The two largest moons, who hold the most political power, are of course, Scaleswind and O’Khasis. O’Khasis has the most amount of resources and trade (though the family that hold the highest political seat on the moon actually come from a whole different planet, Gal’Ruk) whilst Scaleswind, due to its own history, has horrifying amounts of military power. And they’re at war. The other moons around the planet are often dragged into it, but there is an inhabited space rock that is mostly ignored that has been left out of the war as a whole. Phoenix Drop is a moon that resides on one of the outermost rings of the planet, and thus has extreme weather changes. It is, barring Pikoro and it’s moonlets, one of the furthest moons from O’Khasis.

Which is why Garroth chooses it. He moon hops first, of course, to cover his trails, but eventually ends up on the moon of Phoenix Drop, which is very different to his own. Adjusting to the diet and way of life was difficult for him. But he eventually becomes one of the most skilled fighters on the moon, and thus introduces the idea of a guard to it. They have been relatively removed from Ru’Aun politics for a while, so the concept of a guard never appealed, but Garroth thought it smart to train and equip them instead of leaving them to fend for themselves.

Magicks would still exist. Though in a different form. Similar to how Dune has Spice which give prophetic like powers, the moon herb native to Phoenix Drop gives the consumer a unique connection to the nature of their own moon, and after mass consumption, even a connection to people. It is grown on other moons, but there are few that have a moon herb in its purest form (many are genetically modified to fit the inhabitants of moons hoping to financially gain from the growing of it, for eating the moon herb whilst not being familiar with the diet of a moon herb planet can lead to severe illness).

Garroth begins taking the moon herb not long before the au would take place, and he finds it a very jarring experience each time. It causes him some slight illness (he’s from a whole different planet, so moon herbs, modified or otherwise, have a bit of an effect on him) not to mention that going from entirely disconnected to suddenly becoming one with nature is… a pretty big change. But it’s because of the moon herb that he begins to feel as though there’s something important he needs to do, and so sets out with Zenix (who himself hasn’t yet earned the right to eating moon herb) and tries to figure out what. They find Aphmau. And whilst my current ideas mostly follow the set up for amaranth, i might change it.
