Been thinking about the 141 boys coming to visit your southern family…

Price ends up out back with your papaw and uncles staring at a riding mower that they haven’t been able to get back up and working. Beer in hand, hip cocked, mimicking their ‘uh-uh’s and ‘yep’s. He tries to help with grilling but your dad won’t let him anywhere near it because “damn brits can’t cook out to save their lives. I��ve seen what y’all eat.”

Ghost gets a little overwhelmed by the women fussing over him. He’s on his third plate of food and your mimi is still loading him up with more mac n cheese because “He’s just such a big boy - he really needs to fill up! Are you sure you’re feeding him enough?” Luckily Simon is a literal human vacuum - a total garbage disposal. He drinks about a pitcher of sweet tea by himself because you can’t tell me that man doesn’t have a deadly sweet tooth. You have to drive home after the food coma they put him in.

Gaz is the decided favorite son-in-law (never mind that you aren’t married yet.) He’s just so polite, happily helping wherever needed. Quick witted and more than prepared to participate in the small town gossip. Giving genuine, dramatic gasps at the news that the preachers son of your family’s rival church took a trip (went to prison). It just makes sense that boy always had a screw loose, after all. He picks up on the cooking easily enough, asking your mom for all her recipes to make both you and her a lovely custom cook book of family recipes.

Soap goes absolutely hog wild on the four wheelers with your cousins. Regaling the younger ones with stories of his ‘adventures’ (pranks on the other 141 members.) He picks up some of your slang for the fun of it. After all, sigogglin’ just works with a Scottish accent so well. Unfortunately he can’t handle the jalapeño corn bread - it’s just too spicy for the poor boy.

Not Special

The refueling station was on a small moon in the back end of nowhere, close to nothing but a couple of wormhole junctions. Since it had a little convenience store and everything, it really gave off “7/11 next to a desert highway” vibes. Just, y’know, in space. The moon wasn’t big enough for proper gravity or air on its own, so someone had installed a gravity generator under the dusty red ground. And turned it up just a smidge too high, but I wasn’t going to complain.

I was going to buy pre-packaged alien snacks at the store while my coworkers handed the refueling. Mimi was calling the shots, tentacles waving and gravelly voice audible from here, while the Frillian twins handled the heavy lifting of connector hoses and Captain Sunlight was at the payment kiosk. The others were either staying onboard or already browsing the aisles.

I’d just picked up a pack of something colorful (doing an artful fumble-and-recovery because of the gravity) when a rowdy group of Armorlites trooped in. I didn’t pay them too much attention — just a bunch of macho dinosaurs with holstered blasters and bipedal swagger; totally normal here — but one of them said something that brought me up short.

“Hey look, another human,” said the cheerful voice. “Maybe you can get some tips on how not to be such a disappointment.” Raucous laughter followed.

I frowned in their direction and saw that they did have a human with them: a pale and unassuming guy just a bit shorter and stockier than me. He looked annoyed by the comment, but not surprised.

When he walked over to me, I asked, “What’s that about?” The Armorlites were already ignoring him.

The guy sighed. “They heard a lot of stories about humans before they hired me, and I don’t meet their expectations.”

“What kind of stories?”

“Humans doing daring things, like running for hours to get medicine to dying people, catching a diseased rat before it infected an entire space station, throwing fruit at charging fauna hard enough to make it leave…” He ticked things off on his fingers. “Exorcizing a ghost, and riding a hoversled like a skateboard fast enough to catch a bomb before it blew up. How am I supposed to compete with that?” He threw his hands in the air.

“Um,” I said, putting down the snack I was still holding. “Would it make it better or worse to know those were all the same person?”

“What?”

“The rat wasn’t actually diseased, the ghost was a howling dog, and I didn’t know the thing was explosive when I rushed to catch it,” I said. “And I wasn’t the only person throwing things at the fauna.”

“What?” he repeated, with a spread-arms gesture that smacked into the shelf. Rubbing his hand, he asked, “That was all you?”

“Yeah,” I admitted. “Unless there are other humans doing the same things, which is possible.”

He raked fingers through his hair, setting it at odd angles. “I can’t believe this. I’d tell them, but they’d just want to hire you instead.”

I rushed to assure him, “I’ve got a job already, and I don’t want to take yours.” I glanced over at the Armorlites, who were grabbing food and accessories. One clicked a flashlight on in another’s face, prompting curses from him and laughter from the others. That tracked from what I’d seen of Armorlite culture before. Toughness was important. Kindness, not so much. “What do you do for them?”

He sighed again. “Bookkeeping, officially. They needed somebody to handle the boring stuff like money and permits while they focus on hunting the biggest animals they can sell.”

“Gotcha. That sounds … exciting.”

“It’s not. It’s like going on a trip with my cousins again, except they’re even bigger and make fun of me for not having claws.”

“You’ve got other stuff going for you, though!” I said. “We just need to figure which of your differences they’ll respect most.”

“I’m all ears,” he said with a certain level of sarcasm. “Please tell me what about my fragile human physique will get me respect from the Mighty.”

Oh right, they did call themselves that. I’d almost forgotten. At least they were a straightforward species without a lot of mysterious depths.

“Well,” I said, thinking. “They like fighting. You’re more suited to stealth than they are, small enough to hide and do sneak attacks that they wouldn’t see coming. What if you introduced them to rubber band warfare, and sniped from hidden parts of the ship?”

“Nope,” he said. “That would just end with me cornered somewhere, and them showing off how even thin scales are tougher than my skin.”

“Good point. Oh! What kind of animals do they hunt? You said big ones, but do you know the specific names?” I got out my phone and brought up the database of known fauna that I’d talked Captain Sunlight into buying for me. As her own hired animal expert, it was really the kind of thing that I should have. My vet training on Earth only went so far.

“Uhhh, I think the last one was a treehorn,” he said. “Wait, they talked about going for Argoshan Dagger Birds next.”

“Right. Now what kind of noises do those make…” I typed quickly. Big creatures indeed, by the looks of it: Dagger Birds had prevented more than one colony from getting a foothold in the wilds of a nearby world, and were unlikely to stop being a threat anytime soon. I skimmed the rundown for the vocal files. “Here we go. Mating call.” Keeping the sound low enough for just us to hear, I played the croaking warble.

“Okay?” the guy said, confused.

“Can you imitate that?” I asked. “Give it a shot. Kinda like a frog. Woarrrk.”

Looking skeptical, he did. The expression on his face said he wasn’t impressed with his own efforts, but it sounded accurate enough to me.

“Great!” I said. “Give that a bit of practice, then you can go out with your crew and impress everybody by luring in some targets for them.”

“I could,” he said thoughtfully. “I usually stay on the ship while they’re hunting, but it might be worth a try. Can I have a copy of that sound for practice?”

He got out his own phone and I played it again so he could record it. The Armorlites were dumping things onto the front counter, ready to pay and leave. I caught sight of bright packaging that I recognized, and I had another idea.

“Thanks,” the guy said. “This might actually help. What was your name?”

“Robin Bennett,” I said with a belated handshake.

“Oscar Tennyson,” he replied. “Thanks for your help. Looks like I should grab my stuff and get going.”

“Before you go. See those tall cans with the purple labels?” I pointed at something the Armorlites were buying.

“Yeah?”

“Have you ever tried that?”

“No! They get wasted on it; I’ve steered far clear.”

I grinned with all my teeth. “That’s not alcohol. That’s caffeine.”

“What?”

“Humans can process caffeine better than most species on our own planet, and just about everybody in space. It’s a poison to most. It gets them super drunk, but for you—” I pointed at him with glee. “For you, it’s just a bit of energy. Pick your moment, then walk in casually while they’re getting wasted, and slam one down. See what happens.”

He was smiling now. “You’re sure? It’s really just caffeine? How much?”

“I checked into it before. One of those huge cans is like a watered-down coffee. These guys are absolute lightweights, and they don’t even know.”

He grinned to split his face. “That is the best news.”

One of them called for him to hurry up, and he bid me a quick goodbye before scampering off. I saw him grab food cubes, water, and a six-pack of caffeine, which he bundled onto the counter as the Armorlites headed out the door.

“Be right there! Just getting some stuff!”

They didn’t look, simply telling him not to waste any time. He smiled his way through the purchase.

Peeking over the shelves, I smiled too. Then I went back to my own purchases, with thoughts of getting an energy drink or two in his honor.

These started as backstory tidbits for the main character from this book, and turned into a sprawling adventure series in their own right. The sequel book will feature a return of some familiar faces. hello, can I request some headcanons with Dan Heng, Caelus, Welt, and Jing Yuan reacting to reader being slightly " off " despite their cozy amd silly vibes.

Turns out reader was the host of an eldrich horror in the past, and over time, reader had become partially eldrich themselves ( gaining the ability to see and interact with the unseen ie. ghosts, eldrich horrors without being driven insane, creating/controlling shadows, traveling through people's minds while asleep). Although reader is not the host anymore, the eldrich horror now takes the form of a fluffy black puppy that acts as reader's trusty companion.

Such a cute puppy is so cozy and adorable just like you, he loves everything about you, you may be slightly off in the head but aren’t we all a little insane? He plays with your puppy a lot and gives it a lot of treats behind your back.

He loves the little shadow animals you make from the little kids' shadows. Whenever a creepy season falls you love to mess around with the kids telling them all of the fake ghost stories (sometimes he even gets scared from how realistic it is with the light turning off or glasses breaking).

He’s heard you talk about the things you see and can’t help but to feel bad even though you're fine with it, at night he grabs you and puts you against his chest so you won’t be able to see those things if you wake up in the middle of night.

He’s not surprised by anything about you. I’m sorry he’s seen it all, people who see ghosts or control shadows, he’s bothered by ghosts either if you ever do point it out, just tells you not to scare March too much.

He takes care of your dog when you're not around which is pretty rare but still happens and he’ll still take care of it. Your puppy is always on top of his face in the middle of the night licking his face.

You can travel through dreams, eh? Now that something interesting he didn’t know about his refined and beautiful lover, yes he knew about the shadows or ghosts and he was not bothered by anything no matter how creepy it may be, but back to the dreams, why not spend time together when your sleeping since he’s always sleep so that can make up for lost time! What do you think?

The first time Douglas sees Pride and Aurora together, it incapacitates him because in that moment he has all of his suspicions confirmed. The woman he was growing to love, had never really loved him. It’s in the way she looks at Pride, the fondness in her expression, the tenderness as she adjusts his tie, straightening it on the steps of City Hall. She’s wearing a white lace dress that reminds him of something you’d see on a bride at a low key wedding and that’s when he realises that Dwayne Pride and Ro, they’re eloping.

It cuts him in a way that even he can’t fathom because that, that was meant to be him one day, holding her hand, marrying her.

He spends the rest of the afternoon in a daze, a glass of scotch in his hand as Martha shuffles in and out of his office, depositing food, paperwork, anything else she can think of to distract him.

“It’s her loss.” She tells him as she turns on his desk lamp. The sun is starting to set, the light dimming in his office. Douglas, he’d be content to sit in the dark but Martha, she  would never let that happen.

“No.” He says, sighing as he refills his glass. “It’s entirely mine.”

and I'm loving your horror so much 😭❤️ the style and character designs and the stories themselves is just so ✨ I honestly didn't know such a thing could exist. and your use of color! 😭😭😭

I just finished "Letter for Mimi" and that one shot of lanterns going into the water just 🫠

could you pretty please share more about this story and the character? it's gonna haunt me for a while (in the best sense possible)

Aww thank you! I had a lot of fun drawing short horror comics for the past few years. I got to experiment and learned a lot about comic making. Also it was a nice opportunity to showcase my ocs haha

About Letter for Mimi: It was inspired by a Taiwanese folk practice. The tradition is that the spirit tablet of a deceased women will be placed among her husband's ancestors. Which means those souls of whom were unmarried will have no place to rest, since her birth family won't take her in either because an unmarried daughter is a disgrace(yikes). In order to fix this, the dead woman's family will put her hair(or a sheet with her birthday written on it) and some money in a red envelope and place it somewhere visible or have lots of traffic. If an unsuspecting man picks it up then boom the family rush to surround this guy and he will have to marry this dead gal.

Thus there are many visual clues in the comic indicating an upcoming wedding. And the fish people circling Mimi congratulating her.

Also because it was for mermay I had to throw in some elements about drowned ghost being stuck in the location they died until they pull a living person into the water to take their place.

So in the end Mimi got a mandatory dead fish wife and probably went to live under the sea with her.

❛RIDDLE ROSEHEARTS❜

❀ Riddle is so, so stumbly

❀ He’s trying to act all smooth, really he is! Even read a book on the proper techniques of ice skating. 

❀ Though, when the day of actually came, he was stumbling a bit. 

❀ There were many (emphasis on many) attempts from Trey, Cater, and many other classmates to help Riddle, yet he was so confident that he could do it himself, he was sure of it! He just needed a bit more—

❀ Oh dear, Riddle fell again. On his face, at that. You could probably hear Floyd’s laughter somewhere afar.

❀ Still, he’s going to keep trying

❀ I think that he would, at least, wear protective gear. He may be confident, but he’s not that confident in his ice skating skills. 

❀ It also helps when he, inevitably, falls again. 

❀ But you have to admire Riddle’s perseverance, getting back up with a huff time and time again. 

❀ (Please admire his perseverance and meager skills, he’d really appreciate it and would be trying much harder after that)

❀ Maybe, if it goes on long enough 

❀ I’m not sure if he’d do it again out of leisure. Depending on how many times he’s slipped and fallen. 

❀ Though I do think that he wouldn’t reject it if he got invited to ice skating again. 

❀ Just hold onto him, will you?

❛TREY CLOVER❜

❀ Okay, hear me out

❀ I think... Trey would actually know how to ice skate. 

❀ So, he has younger siblings, right? And the Queendom of Roses is like based off of England/London I think and in a northern hemisphere-ish area (basing this off of the map in Book 6 and Mimi rants ily), so the likelihood of things like lakes in the Queendom freezing over is high

❀ So, obviously, kids being kids, his younger siblings would want to go ice skating

❀ And, obviously, Trey needs to go make sure there aren’t any injuries or broken noses because nobody wants to be going to the hospital.

❀ So, obviously, Trey has to be there to make sure the younger ones won’t get hurt

❀ As such, he probably needed to learn how to ice skate so he can smoothly go over to his siblings to help. 

❀ So, on an ice skating trip, Trey would definitely be able to move around the ice smoothly. 

❀ He’s not one to show off, but, in my opinion, I think it’d be pretty damn impressive to a lot of people. 

❀ Like, Trey’s movements are smooth and steady. There’s no flair to it, like Rook’s though

❀ But just watching him is kind of nice to see. 

❀ I like to think he would be the type to like offer his arm if you need balance.

❀ Oh that’s actually kinda cute and attractive now that I think about it. Uuugh

❀ I don’t think Trey would ice skate outside of special occasions, (ie. going with his siblings or a school trip.)

❀ But yeah, Trey is actually pretty decent at ice skating.

❛CATER DIAMOND❜

❀ Oh Cater. Cater, Cater, Cater.

❀ He’s good, like, he can stay on the ice

❀ And you can bet he’s posting on Magicam about the trip and posting selfies and videos of him on the ice. 

❀ The second the camera is off, though, Cater is as wobbly as that one chair in class that every kid loved rocking back and forth on.

❀ He can stay on the ice, thankfully, and he’s stable enough that he won’t fall

❀ But... Cater’s legs just shake and tremble no matter what he does

❀ It’s not that he has bad balance. Cater’s spent a bit trying to figure out what the hell is actually going on with him. He brushes it off as performance anxiety or something like that 

❀ I’d like to think that his sisters probably did some skating/ice skating and brought him along for the ride. 

❀ And, as his sisters usually do, made him participate. 

❀ So that’s where Cater’s skill on the ice comes from

❀ If you needed his arm or anything like that, Cater would be happy to give it to you, and give you a few tips as well

❀ Though, he’d mostly be taking selfies with him and other students on the ice before promptly getting off off it to enjoy spicy hot chocolate or something 

❀ Ice skating isn’t an activity Cater would do for leisure, he’d rather be doing other things that isn’t shaking on the ice for five minutes straight

❀ I think he’d prefer to just watch and take pictures of what he sees

❛ACE TRAPPOLA❜

❀ Falls on his ass pt. 1 (+ pulls others with him)

❀ He has never been on ice in his life and never thought he would be

❀ Ace is flopping and falling, someone get this man a walker for the rink

❀ Except, he refuses to use any ice skate walkers or whatever they’re called (He called them granny walkers and said they looked dumb)

❀ Ace fully believes he has the ability to be able to do ice skating with zero skills beforehand 

❀ “It’s just roller skating on ice!” He said 

❀ He was wrong

❀ Ace fully believed he would be fine on the ice since he claimed that roller skating was easy

❀ He was wrong

❀ Ace was fully prepared for all this to go smoothly and didn’t get that expectation met. 

❀ Ace will do anything but use the tools offered to him. 

❀ Instead, he will cling to his other classmates and attempt to use them as support

❀ Though for half of them, he’ll end up pulling them down with him

Personality: Dominique is what people call him. A good package deal. Meaning that you will have to deal with his constant mood changes depending on the person who he is with. Dominique is flirty(HELLA flirty) but he knows his limits. Bro is sadistic in general when it came to words or actions. Dominique's UM and its involves his bloodied camera. The UM is about you being your childhood/ favorite places and Dominique taking pictures of said places but each picture get more and more terrifying as time past. The pictures will involves your worst fears and regrets until a unidentified killer appears and the real nightmare begins. You will be chased by said killer as you tried to escape while agonizing and blood curling screams was heard constantly. You have 30 minutes to find a camera and snapped the picture of anything until its too late. What happens after you failed? Then you will see Dominique in front of you with a malicious smile and take a picture before...and after your brutal demise.

The skull in the camera is the final moments of the person's life before they are never waking up.

Recurring themes in 2023: Horror and Gore

My knowledge and experience with horror still remains shallow, but I had some chilling encounters with I dare say some essential reads in the manga genre that got to me. Of those are: PTSD Radio by Masaaki Nakayama Parasyte by Hitoshi Iwaaki Mimi's Tales of Terror by Hirokatsu Kihara & Ichiro Nakayama adapted by Junji Ito Cold Apartment by Akane Saiga

I was encouraged to check out Masaaki Nakayama's work many years ago and the licensing of PTSD Radio gave me a great reason to finally get started. Not only is the horror truly unnerving, deploying great sequences and a wide range of spirits, I was also blown away by the balancing of multiple timelines, locations, and overarching story thread playing out in the unfortunately unfinished series. What got me most though was in the final volume when he in detail describes and artistically depicts his affliction with a sudden and extremely rare blood disease that put him out of commission for some time. Then a series of truly eerie and unnerving hauntings that had affected himself and several acquaintances. A series not to be missed by lovers of ghost and spirits based horror. Maybe more action-packed and body horror than a typical horror I was so happy to finally have read the famous for decades work that is Parasyte. I found myself absorbed into the well planned story and the questions it asked itself. Its status among Japanese readers as a gateway work is not one I will challenge.

Junji Ito is beyond cliche at this point but Mimi's Tales of Horror reminded me that I like him a lot as someone who does adaptions or his own spin on other people's ideas so I found this with its mix of comedic and intense encounters with the supernatural to be my favorite Ito release of the year. While these reads were all great, it still felt like part of the cultural catch up I was doing as they are quite famous in their genre, but there was one fluke find I was surprised I couldn't find much info in english. Cold Apartment by Akane Saiga. Literally handed to me as I was browsing in a store, I was intrigued by the art style on the cover and didn't find myself disappointed by the contents of this one-shot compilation. A landlord must feed his giant carnivorous cat, a stalker becomes the stalked, two children stumble upon a slashers hideout, those are just the stories easy for me to quickly summarize. With some gorey panels that made me wince, depictions of intense emotions that rocked me, and an artistic expression reminiscent on the type of original horror content you could mistakenly stumble upon on the 2000's internet. This read will be impossible for me to forget any time soon
