Ok so most of this art is SUUUPER old (like 1-2 years old?) But I really wanted to introduce these guys on here! I have a ton of stuff about them on my insta but because I'm moving to tumblr I wanted to make a big intro post for them!

This is my TMNT AU! This post will only include the 4 turtles +April and casey cause I haven't designed anyone else yet really, they have notes and stuff on their refs but I wanna write some stuff too!

Leo is 18 years old, is the identical twin of Mikey, and is a trans woman! She and Mikey share the leader role, being the oldest they look out for their younger siblings! Leo is more reserved and soft spoken but is also fiercely protective of her family! Her and April are daiting also! Leo also has OCD so she struggles with anxiety and paranoia but her family helps her and supports her!

Mikey and Leo hatched from the same egg, their egg was taken and injected with mutagen by the Foot Clan before they hatched! They were the 3rd and 4th experiments of the Foot Clan (hence the tatoos on their face), respectively, the first 2 having passed after hatching. Leo has arthritis in her knees (the knee brace) and struggles to stand for long periods of time. Mikey is more outgoing and relaxed, though just as protective over his family. He is the only one allowed to drive (according to Splinter) though he's currently teaching Raph and Donnie to drive! They have a truck that she(Mikey) and Don fixed up together though they don't get to drive often. Mikey is also daiting Mondo and Renet (they're poly) and has adhd

Don and Raph were also experiments of the Foot Clan, stolen by Splinter as eggs and raised by him once they hatched. Raph is the youngest, being a month younger than Donnie. Donnie loves to make things and fix things. They love learning how machines and tech works, it's their special interest! Don is autistic and has bad eyesight and aren't the most coordinated. Mikey also has bad eye sight and his heart-shaped glasses are prescription! Oh and Donnie and Casey are in a queer platonic relationship!

Raph is the youngest and has the biggest personality. He loves animals and plants and uses his interests as an outlet for his anger issues. She likes to paint as well and her room is full of things he's painted. She has a pet bird named Soda! He found Soda when he was little and Soda is her best friend (other than Casey). He doesn't always think things through and acts impulsively a lot but she does her best to keep herself in check and find healthy ways to deal with her emotions (she is also autistic and has trouble regulating her emotions.) She has a HUUUGE crush on Y'Gthba aka Mona and Y'Gthba has a HUUUGE crush on him! But they're both to scared to admit it to each other so ya.

Casey is 17 like Raph and Don and those three are best friends, they do literally everything together. Casey loves hockey, food, and music! He plays the drums and bass guitar! He taught Raph how to play the drums too and is teaching Donnie how to play bass! He has a little sister named Angel and he loves her to bits!

April is Casey's tutor and best friend also! She loves journalism, writing and photography and is the head of her and Casey's highschool newspaper! She's a huge book girlie and loves to info dump to Leo about her newest read!

I will say that for Donnie’s characterization, I think it comes from a place of not knowing how to identify the line between his autism and his personality, and a difficulty with portraying the balance between those things influencing each other.

“Donnie is autistic, but this isn’t all he is” and “Donnie’s autism influences the way he views the world, and thus influences his character” aren’t mutually exclusive. In the case of flattening his character into the apathetic, flat “bad boy” persona, I think this one is actually from a bit of ableism—albeit unintentional.

Donnie is low empathy; this is something that is related to his autism. However, despite this being TRUE, he’s not LIMITED to this. Donnie is low empathy, but Donnie’s personality is someone who is deeply loyal to his loved ones, someone who loves to show his affection through his work (and the intertwining of his special interest and how he shows affection to his family is another example of this intersection!!). By assigning all of his actions to just a quirk of personality, you’ve left yourself with contradictory pieces of character—and some parts of it that are just easier to leave out entirely.

And on the other side, Donnie being rude and sarcastic isn’t necessarily because of his low empathy, either. Because Leo is also these things—and it’s… his personality. Donnie is rude and sarcastic because it’s a bit, and it’s funny, and he plays the straight man in his family dynamic. He loves playing around with his family as much as they like messing with him! By doing this, we’ve gone the other extreme of assigning all his traits to his autism, and leaving out the potential of him being a person with his own sense of humor and personality.

TLDR; it’s hard to dive into the intricacies of characters, especially ones who have disabilities. You have to balance the extent of the influence the disability has on the personality of the character. A lot of times it’s easier to flatten someone into one end or the other, and that’s partly why we have an Emotionless Donnie pandemic.

^^^^^^ yeah i agree with this as well!! i mostly hesitate to accuse it of being ableism because i dont want to accuse a lot of well-intentioned people, especially those who are neurodivergent because fandom is a very nd-heavy space, of doing something like that, i just think its a folly of getting caught into fandom archetypes and then either staying there or overcorrecting in a way that is similarly exhausting, implicit bias is just a difficult thing to understand and call out in yourself even if youre the afflicted group youre applying this behavior to, and i really dont want to just be hostile to people who mean well

but GOD it pisses me off more than it probably should. the weird donnie sidelining in the fandom has actually destroyed a lot of my enjoyment of leo to an extent im a little embarrassed to admit, i cannot IMAGINE how raph and mikey stans must feel

What are some of your favorite character relationships/dynamics in TMNT, and why? Is there anything that you particularly like seeing explored with them in fan works (art, writing, comics, etc)?

I really love Leo as the younger twin/with Donnie ending up taking care of him more from time to time. I also like the idea that Leo and Mikey are the younger brothers, and thus have a different sort of relationship than they do with their other bro. Obviously Leo n Donnie are the disaster twins, but there's something really special about Leo and Mikey being the youngest together. Probably cause their dynamic reminds me a lot fo me and my younger sibling!

I also really like reading fics where Leo is written as autistic, cause to me he IS autisitc. I also enjoy fics where he's disabled, particularly hard of hearing. I just think it's a really interesting take! I also enjoy when Leo has anxiety cause he just like m fr :)

You don't know the can of worms that you just opened. Know that I cracked my knuckles and kicked my feet excitedly when I got this ask and I would LOVE to hear your insights too.

This is pretty much the format I used for myself, so I do apologize if there's something wrong with it. Also, this is only my appreciation of it and autism is a spectrum, etc.

Difficulty socializing - Imitating forms of communication (sign for "sorry", cursing) - Unable to read when he's being rude (shitty) and need for external confirmation from Sydney - Uneasy in group gatherings (not joining the rest of the staff for family during his first weeks at The Beef), avoiding social events (never been to a party, misses family reunions) - Can be gregarious when masking/using costumes - specifically the scene with him pretending to be Logan at the party - "And [Mikey] had this amazing ability. He could just, he could walk into a room, and he could take the temperature of it instantly. You know, he could just, he could dial it. And, um… I'm not built like that, man. I, um… I didn't have a lot of friends growing up. I had a, a stutter when I was a kid. I was scared to speak half the time. And, uh, I got shitty grades 'cause I couldn't pay attention in school. I didn't get into college. I didn't have any girlfriends. I don't think I'm funny."

Problems with body language - Cannot read easily when he's being teased/mocked and when he isn't: - He gets really defensive when Mikey and Richie mention Claire even if they're being genuine and doesn't calm down until Stevie says so. - He doesn't realize Sydney is joking at first in the alley scene or her outright mocking him in the S3 trailer ("I can sense the sarcasm" "No, no, no. Not sarcasm, snark, contempt even.") - Asking Sydney constantly what's wrong - he listens intently which suggests that he cares but he genuinely can't pick up on what the problem is - Lack of eye contact, especially at the beginning, giving priority to looking at the food than whoever he's talking to. He seems more comfortable with looking at Syd and Richie in the eye than the rest.

Difficulty making friends and navigating relationships - No romantic relationships before Claire (we assume 🤷🏻‍♀️) - When Claire called him and told him that Fak said he was his best friend, Carmy took a second to process and then agreed. He genuinely has no idea. - The whole "a girl who is a friend" debacle

Stimming - Fiddling with his spoon, shaking hands and blinking hard - Arguably, also smoking

Routine -~Consistency~ - "And the routine of the kitchen was so… consistent and exacting and busy and hard and alive" - Wears almost the same outfit every day (white t-shirt, slacks, coat, apron) - Doesn't deal well with change

Special interests - Cooking, drawing, (vintage) fashion - he's really out there cooking in hundred dollar t-shirts and gifting Thom Browne chef whites - Creative and flourishing in his chosen field ("I felt like I could speak through the food, like I could communicate through creativity. And that kind of confidence, you know, like I was finally… I was good at something, that was so new, and that was so exciting") - Understanding the world and other people in terms of food

Abnormal sensory response - Cannot stand certain sounds (~ball breaker~) and doesn't mind others (alarm) - Possibly heightened sense of taste/smell?

From childhood and more notorious overtime - Described as weird and shy even as a child - Stutter - Bad at school

More notorious under stress - Meltdowns and lashing out (1x07, 2x10) - Gets overwhelmed when plans change - Shutdown/anxiety attack after sleeping with Claire

Not playing cooperatively - Individualistic and cutthroat in the kitchen - VERY task focused (when he’s cooking HE IS COOKING) - Territorial over his things (knife) - He has a hard time finding a managerial style that suits him, delegating, and motivating the staff

Depression, anxiety and APD comorbidity - Having special interests/happy stimming/needs shut down at a young age resulting in a pessimistic mindset (waiting for the other shoe to drop), anxiety attacks and unhealthy attachment styles - His trauma plays a huge role in this too but autistic children are particularly prone to suffering abuse in silence/staying in toxic environments and relationships

Insomnia

Alexithymia - "I Googled fun." - "I guess all the time I feel like I'm kind of trapped because I can't… Describe how I'm feeling. So to ask someone else how they’re feeling, that seems, uh… I don’t know, insane?" - "I hate this feeling" "What feeling, Carm?" "Uh, I'm not sure."

Black and white thinking - Difficulty focusing on more than one thing at a time, a very clear example is the majority of S2 when he's trying to juggle a relationship with Claire with opening the restaurant, while actively compartimentalizing the two of them, ignoring Syd's calls while he's out, then Claire's when he's at the restaurant - At the beginning of S1, he's hanging onto the idea that there's only ONE way to properly run a restaurant - Whatever "advice" he gets from Al Anon meetings is taken to the extreme, causing most of his fuck ups of S1 (more on this) - In the same vein, my boy can't understand a metaphor to save his life

Oooh good questions! So, yes in my AU Donnie is autistic! As for what they do when he has meltdowns? Wellll, they used to attempt to get him to continue the experiments through them but once they realized that it only made this worse/more difficult they usually just put him back in his room until it's over. However, this can go really bad for Donnie because often times they will put him back and keep Mikey to continue their work.

The most common punishment they get is getting things taken away from them such as the books, papers, ect. However, the worst punishment they ever get is.... being seperated.

Donnie is terrified of being alone.

Now that they have Carol though, she has been helping MONUMENTALLY with this. Seeing as she was hired on SPECIFICALLY to study their emotional development. Her and Mikey are the only ones who know how to help him through them. :D

For your second question: Yes! While their main objective is creating the mutagin to keep the person funding them happy, they are actually a lot more interested in a lot of things about them. Their mental and physical development, what parts are more human and which are more turtle. They do brain scans regularly on them, just to see what has changed and how similar their brain development is to human children! :D

So for starters as a neurodivergent person myself not ONE of the Hamatos is neurotypical. I landed on him having autism just because in my interpretation he fits the diagnostic criteria. I think that the Lou Jitsu movies and art history are special interests of his!

As for him having bipolar disorder, I think most people agree that he's depressed. He struggles with self-loathing and and feeling of failure and also has difficulties getting himself to do much more than eating, sleeping, and watching TV. As for why I think he has bipolar disorder specifically, we see several instances where he will suddenly insist that the boys start training, or get a big push of motivation to do something. Since he struggles more with depressive episodes than manic ones, he likely has bipolar type II.

I don't think he ever got formally diagnosed with either (not until post-canon family and individual therapy at Mikey's insistence). However there was probably some speculation.
