so i'm doing these songs posts weekly now instead of monthly to hopefully, 1. make things feel a bit more fresh and relevant and 2. cover more songs!! chose a pretty uneventful week to start doing this tho!! i also threw in two songs from the tail-end of last month at the start of this because they rule and i wanted to shout them out. anyways, enjoy!!! also feel free to follow me on rate your music and twitter <3
"HEATDEATH" - NOISE ARTIFACT
◇ released: June 28, 2024 ◇ genres: electronica, indietronica
I was going to add this to my post from last month, but I hit the image limit!!! I had to shout this out somewhere on here though, so I'm doing it now. I found out about this song and NOISE ARTIFACT on Twitter. This is some really solid, furry, indietronica with some incredible synth-work. Also some really raw and confessional songwriting which sounds suffocating under all of the electronic instrumentation. Really digging this song, definitely gonna keep an eye out for more of her stuff in the future!
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
"Lift You Up" - Jessie Ware & Romy
◇ released: June 30, 2024 ◇ genres: diva house, dance-pop
This was also released at the tail-end of June, but I'm counting it here! Jessie Ware teams up with The xx's Romy for a sleek diva house cut. I've loved Ware's last two records and I've recently been going through The xx's catalog - in which Romy is always a highlight. These two just have such a fun dynamic. That chorus is also electric. This just makes you want to move!!!
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
"Ever Seen" - beabadoobee
◇ released: July 1, 2024 ◇ featured on This is How Tomorrow Moves (not yet released) ◇ genres: indie pop, folk pop
This is fine! Nothing too exciting about this track unfortunately. This shift into more folk stylings has kinda proven to be a bit of a detriment to beabadoobee, although I did enjoy "Take a Bite" a good bit. These songs just sort of make her feel like another face in the crowd. The unique presence she had across her last album isn't here on a lot of these new tracks. Guess we'll just have to wait and see how the album plays out!
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
"Lithonia" - Childish Gambino
◇ released: July 2, 2024 ◇ featured on Bando Stone & the New World (not yet released) ◇ genres: psychedelic rock, alternative rock, psychedelic soul
I'm of two minds on this new Childish Gambino single. In one mind, I feel like this song is overdramatic and suffocating to its detriment. In the other, imagining this in the context of his new album and film on the way it could be a very climactic high. I guess we will see, but for now I'll just say I like it. I never really dove into his last album, nor its re-release, but I've been waiting for Donald Glover to make more wild, psychedelic stuff like Awaken, My Love so this is definitely a step in the direction I want.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
"Tobey" - Eminem, Big Sean, & Babytron
◇ released: July 2, 2024 ◇ featured on The Death of Slim Shady (not yet released) ◇ genre: pop rap
Irritating in different, a bit more tolerable ways, than "Houdini," which had all of the millennials doing cartwheels, but I'm still not really wowed by this. Eminem is usually the worst thing about an Eminem song so having him obscured by both Big Sean and Babytron, two other Detroit rappers, does make this a better listen. Still nothing remarkable, they sound awkward as hell over this beat. My hopes for this album are not high at all, but such is the case for Eminem past the 2000s.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
"HUMBLE ME" - Killer Mike
◇ released: July 2, 2024 ◇ genre: southern hip hop
Killer Mike is frustrating. He's a good rapper and a razor-sharp writer who occasionally has precision many of his contemporaries do not - but then he'll do something totally contradictory and dumb. Anyways, this new song has him tackling his arrest at the Grammy Awards a few months ago after he won Rap Album of the Year among other things, it's just a general hype-up song. It's fine, nothing too special.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
"Tough" - Quavo & Lana Del Rey
◇ released: July 3, 2024 ◇ genres: trap, alt-pop, alternative r&b
Quavo and Lana Del Rey collab for the second time in their careers, the first time being on Lana's Lust for Life record, for a song that is pretty decent. Lana has been teasing her country era following her wonderful album from last year, which was my second favorite album of the year, leaving me with a lot of trepidation. She slides on this track, cowgirl boots and all, to do her thing - or maybe "thang" depending on how country she goes from here. Quavo also delivers a decent performance and the two have better chemistry than you would expect. The bridge and the chorus towards the end are easily the highlight of the song, I love that part even if the song on the whole doesn't fully grab me. Not sure where this leads for either artist, this could just be a fun one-off!
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
"Overture" - The Voidz
◇ released: July 4, 2024 ◇ featured on Like All Before You (not yet released) ◇ genres: ambient, neo-psychedelia, chillsynth
Not much to say about this song, it's basically a minute-long teaser, but The Voidz are returning for a new album soon! This single is kinda pointless so I hope we get something a bit more substantial in the weeks to come. Reminds me that I also need to revisit their last album, I remember liking a good bit of it.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
"JOYRIDE" - Kesha
◇ released: July 4, 2024 ◇ genres: romanian popcorn?, dance-pop, dutch house
Kesha has been embroiled, unfortunately, in more drama surrounding her and Dr. Luke as he seems to have produced a washed-up popstar's comeback single about women empowerment that is set to drop in a few weeks. Sorry, didn't mean to get involved myself. Kesha cuts through all the noise with this crazy dance-pop, house cut with accordions and whatnot. It's ... a lot. I'm not sure if everything works, but it certainly sounds interesting. She carries herself like a diva here, but it's over this goofy house beat. Y'know what? It kinda rules. You go girl!!! The accordion is making a comeback!!! Be on the lookout!!
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
"Worldwid3" - femtanyl feat. zombAe
◇ released: July 4, 2024 ◇ genres: industrial hip hop, digital hardcore
In celebration of hitting 100k subscribers on her YouTube channel, rising digital hardcore artist femtanyl dropped a new song with zombAe. This is a fun little song with some cool production moments, which is to be expected given her past work. The main focus is zombAe's rapping and she does a good job, although I do wish there was a better balance between the two artists. This mostly just feels like a fun one-off.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ thanks for reading :3

If you’re looking to hear the two powerhouses go at it vocally, tune in to “Dreamgirls” and “The Fighting Temptations.” But if you need a laugh, check out the only Black “Annie” movie ever made, starring singer and actor Jamie Foxx.
Check out this list of series and documentaries to enjoy this weekend in honor of Black Music Month.
Amazon Prime
Dreamgirls (2006) Beyoncé also starred in the dazzling adaption of the Broadway musical about a 1960s girl group. She played Deena and Jennifer Hudson played Effie White, the latter for which Hudson won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. The film also starred Jamie Foxx, Eddie Murphy, Loretta Devine, Danny Glover, and Anika Noni Rose as the group’s third member, Lorrell. The film details their development as artists and singers.
Respect (2021) In this autobiographical film, Hudson played the lead as the legendary Aretha Franklin. The movie documents her adolescent years singing in her father’s church choir to her rise to international fame. Marlon Wayans plays Franklin’s ex-husband and former manager, Ted White, and Mary J. Blige portrays vocalist Dinah Washington.
Ray (2004) Embattled actor Jamie Foxx portrays the life story and career of legendary R&B and blues musician Ray Charles. The biographical musical follows his impoverished beginnings in the South to touring under Jim Crow laws as a successful artist. He goes on to get married and have children, but his addiction to heroin never strayed too far away. After a series of arrests and a rehab stint, Charles regained his strength to make a brave comeback and enjoy decades of music success.
School Daze (1988) Spike Lee wrote and directed the musical comedy starring Laurence Fishburne, Tisha Campbell, Samuel L. Jackson, Jasmine Guy, and many others. The Morehouse graduate explored the socio-political and economic issues surrounding students at historically black colleges and universities.
The Fighting Temptations (2003) Beyoncé and Cuba Gooding Jr. star in this musical comedy about an ad executive who loses his job and leaves the Big Apple. He heads to Georgia to collect his aunt’s inheritance, where he leads a gospel choir to victory in a citywide competition. Other supporting cast members include LaTanya Richardson, Mike Epps, Chloe Bailey, Steve Harvey, Melba Moore, Shirley Caesar, Ann Nesby and Angie Stone.
Apple TV
Carmen: A Hip Hopera (2001) An oldie but goodie is this musical drama starring Beyoncé, Mekhi Phifer, Mos Def, Bow Wow, Erykah Badu, Wyclef Jean, Da Brat, Jermaine Dupri, Fred Williamson, and more. A beautiful woman with a hypnotizing face and body can have any man she wants. She chooses a cop who loses his job after spending one night with her. They both end up on the run from the police, but the biggest dreamer doesn’t make it out alive.
Purple Rain (1984) Minneapolis native Prince plays a young artist with an abusive at-home living situation. The club singer creates a band to compete with a rival singer and explore new love. The film’s name is the same as the late singer’s sixth studio album.
The Wiz (1978) The beloved feature film includes an all-Black cast, compared to its original 1993 film starring Judy Garland in the lead role of Dorothy. In the musical drama, Diana Ross plays Dorothy, Michael Jackson plays the Scarecrow, Richard Pryor as the Wiz, Nipsey Russell as the Tin Man, and Ted Ross as the Cowardly Lion. They work together to get to overcome obstacles and meet their destinies at the end of the yellow brick road.
Tina Turner What’s Love Got to Do With It (1993) Two months before her passing, Tina Turner praised Angela Bassett’s portrayal of her in the biopic. It was based on Turner’s 1986 autobiography, “I, Tina: My Life Story,” and depicted her years of abuse during her marriage to her then-husband Ike Turner, played by Fishburne. Despite being the actress being snubbed an Oscar for her role, Turner said she felt “honored” by Bassett’s portrayal in the film.
BET+
The New Edition Story (2017) The three-part miniseries about the legendary R&B group begins with five childhood friends who become international sensations while growing up in Boston. As they quickly emerge into the spotlight, various obstacles strain their finances, friendship, and future. The film led to “The Bobby Brown Story.”
Disney Plus
Black Nativity (2013) Forest Whitaker, Angela Bassett, Tyrese, Jack Latimore, Jennifer Hudson, and more shocked fans with their vocals in their musical adaption of Langston Hughes’ 1961 play. In the all-Black cast film, a teen from Baltimore moves in with his estranged grandparents. Unhappy with their strict rules, he goes out into the street to find his own way.
Let It Shine (2012) This film’s cast includes a few veteran actors and a bevy of actors who are being given flowers. “Abottt Elementary” star Tyler James Williams plays Cyrus, a teenage rapper looking to impress Roxie, played by “ICU” singer and ‘Bel-Air” actress Coco Jones. He battles his nemesis under an alias and wins with a rhyme about his lady. Sadly, he gets no credit for it but ultimately wins Roxie’s heart.
HBO Max
Straight Outta Compton (2015) Based on a true story about the rap group N.W.A., “Straight Outta Compton” sees six men in Compton, Los Angeles, who pushed the boundaries and revolutionized hip-hop culture with gritty rap lyrics and their dealings with Suge Knight. O’Shea Jackson Jr. stars as the younger version of his father Ice Cube in the biographical drama, alongside Corey Hawkins, Jason Mitchell, Neil Brown Jr., Aldis Hodge, and Brandon Lafourch to make up the famed group.
Hulu
Cadillac Records (2008) Cedric the Entertainer plays music artist Willie Dixon and is the narrator of the rock ’n’ roll film full of great acting and great music. It details the rise and fall of Chess Records, the Chicago blues label owned by a Polish immigrant played by Adrien Broady’s character Leonard Chess. He launched the careers of late great musicians such as Muddy Waters, Chuck Berry, and Etta James, the latter of whom was portrayed by Beyoncé.
Chasing Trane: The John Coltrane Documentary (2016) This passionate story tells the portrait of an unconventional jazz musician whose music refined music and continues to impact, influence, and transform other people’s lives. It features more interviews and little anecdotes about his life with narration from Denzel Washington.
Summer Of Soul (2021) Questlove made his filmmaking debut after premiering this movie at the Sundance Film Festival. The music documentary features six weeks of footage taken in the summer of 1969 in the aftermath of Black Creativity and the civil rights movement. The classic concert film looks back at a group of blues, gospel, and rock ‘n’ soul artists who performed at the Harlem Cultural Festival at Mount Morris Park. It includes performances from Nina Simone, Stevie Wonder, B.B. King, Mavis Staples, Sly & The Family Stone, and more.
Netflix
Get On Up (2014) Actor Chadwick Boseman portrayed the legendary James Brown in the biopic that explores Brown’s life, music, and presence on stages worldwide. It follows the music legend’s journey from humble beginnings to becoming of the most influential artists of the civil rights movement.
Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom (2020) This marks Boseman’s last movie before his unexpected passing. The new adaptation of August Wilson’s play tackles hard issues like race, art, and the exploitation of black artists in the 1920s. Viola Davis gave viewers a riveting performance as Ma Rainey, who never failed to hold back when she wasn’t satisfied with a song. Most of the film is recorded in a studio as she prepares to record new music for an album while clashing with white producers.
Sparkle (2012) Jordin Sparks made her feature film debut in this remake of the original 1976 film alongside industry vets like Derek Luke, Mike Epps, and the late singer Whitney Houston. She plays a child prodigy who sings in a group with her two sisters. Set in 1968, Detroit, the musical trio have hopes of signing a record, which seems far in the future due to one sister’s drug habit and Houston’s role as an over-protective mother. The “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” singer died in February 2012, months before the film was released in theaters. The original “Sparkle,” starring Lonette McKee and Irene Cara — also is available to stream, on Amazon Prime.
The Get Down (2016) The hip-hop-themed drama is set in the South Bronx, known as the birthplace of hip-hop and has been since the 1970s. It follows a small crew of teens who dance or create music. Production reportedly spent over $120 million to make the film, making it the most expensive production in Netflix history. Each episode takes a deeper dive into the rise of hip-hop and disco music.
Starz
Annie (2014) The musical starring Jamie Foxx finds Quvenzhané Wallis as the first Black Annie. The orphan unexpectedly meets wealthy businessman Will Stacks, who uses her to help with his mayoral campaign. The funny satire has quiet moments, sad moments, and performances of “Tomorrow” and “Hard-Knock Life.” She eventually moves in with Stacks, and the two build a bond similar to the one depicted between Annie and her benefactor Daddy Warbucks in the 1932 “Little Orphan Annie” classic.
YouTube
The Jacksons: An American Dream (1992) In the film, Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs and Angela Bassett play Joseph and Katherine Jackson, the parents of Michael Jackson and his nine siblings. The five-hour miniseries tells the captivating story of how five Jackson siblings became one of the most iconic boy groups in music history. Their unique sound came out of Gary, Indiana, and took over the music industry for years.

"GUILTY BANDIT SENT TO PRISON FOR FOUR YEARS," Hamilton Spectator. January 10, 1934. Page 7. --- John Stewart Involved in Several Crimes ---- Frank Savoy Didn't Want Any Comment --- Asked For Sentence To Be "Quick" --- Appearing for sentence in police court this morning on two charges, of shopbreaking and theft and one of assault and robbery, John Stewart, no address, was sentenced to a total of four years in the penitentiary. On the charge of assaulting and robbing Mike Gaic, Stewart was sentenced to two years and to similar terms on the shopbreaking charges. The latter sentences will run concurrently, but consecutively to the assault and robbery count.
On the assault charge, Stewart is said to have been a companion of Walter Reece and William Creek, who are both serving jail terms for the same offence. He was arrested last week by Constable Pickup after a store on Main street east had been burgled, and later admitted having broken into another store on Ottawa street north.
"Make It Quick" "Have you anything to say before you are sentenced?" asked Magistrate Burbidge. of Frank Savoy, alias Frank Conders, who appeared for sentence on a charge of possession of a revolver which was found in his overcoat pocket when he applied for a night's lodging at the central police station.
"Make it quick," was Savoy's non-committal reply.
"When a man of your record, is found in possession of firearms, it may mean an intention to use them," said the magistrate, in sentencing the accused to one year in the common jail.
"Can't you make it two years in the penitentiary?" asked the accused.
"No," replied the magistrate, and Savoy turned towards the cells.
Wanted No Trial "I don't want to be tried anywhere," said Alexander Ritta, 365 Mary street, who was jointly charged with Joseph Cutala, 295 Catharine street north, with fighting on the street, when he was asked to elect where he would be tried. After the matter of election was explained to him, he elected to be tried by the magistrate.
A story of a row which started in a pool room on James street north on December 29 was told. It was stated that an argument started which continued on the street. After a party of men left the pool room, it appeared as though a fight would start and Cutala was said to have tried to stop it, saying that all would be arrested for fighting on the street. It was said that Ritta called Cutaia a vile name and struck him in the mouth cutting his lips. Cutala, an amateur boxer, retaliated with both hands and Ritta went to the hospital for four days. Both men were convicted and were remanded for sentence for a week on bail of $50 each.
"I want to be tried in the high court," exclaimed Ritta as he went to the cells.
In registering the conviction, Magistrate Burbidge said that, although a man had a right to defend himself, he should not retaliate. It was his duty to withdraw and take proper action through the courts. Cutaia could have charged Ritta with assault occasioning actual bodily harm which carried with it a maximum term of three years in the penitentiary. He intimated that both men would be treated alike when sentence is passed.
Had a Revolver Following complaints that a on man Beach road had a gun, Inspector Ernest May of the east-end division, and Constable Forbes went out on a search for the man. This search morning. Claude Glover, Freeman, Ont., appeared on a charge crying a loaded revolver. He claimed that he was intoxicated, and did not remember where he got the weapon. A conviction was registered and Glover was remanded a week for sentence and mental examination.
"He has gone to the northern camps," said Acting Court Clerk Eric Howell when Fred Earle failed to appear for sentence on a vagrancy charge. The case was adjourned sine die.
A further remand for sentence of one week was granted in the case of John Hurst who is awaiting sentence on charges of armed robbery arising out of the hold-ups of Albert and George Salton and a William Carroll store on the night of November 25 last.
[AL: John Stewart was 23, single, born in Paisley, Scotland, and was a 'common labourer'. He had a long criminal record - including terms at the Industrial School in Mimico, the Guelph Reformatory, and Burwash Industrial Farm, and a previous term at Kingston Penitentiary as #486. This time, he was convict #3321 at Kingston Penitentiary, and worked as a common labourer at the prison. He was transferred February 1935 to Collin's Bay Penitentiary, and released from there in early 1937 thanks to good time earned.]

Tigers sign Accrington striker
Non-league previews
HYDE UNITED fans who have been clamouring for a new striker since the departure of Liam Hardy may have had their prayers answers.
Manager Jim Gannon has signed Jack Doherty from League One Accrington Stanley and the 6ft 2ins 19-year-old could make his debut at the Project Solar UK Stadium tomorrow (Saturday) against Nantwich Town in the Pitching In NPL premier division.
James Jones returns to the squad after missing the Manchester Premier Cup tie at West Didsbury and Chorlton through illness and Chinedu Uche has recovered from an ankle injury.
Assistant-boss Martin Coyne takes charge of the team as Gannon is unwell. He follows in the footsteps of his father, Ged, who managed and played for the Tigers and his uncle, Peter, who was a star striker in the highly successful Hyde side of the early Eighties.
Mike Clegg will have to mix and match his ASHTON UNITED squad again ahead of their home encounter with title favourites South Shields.
Sam Baird (hamstring) and Tom Bentham (groin) are unlikely to be available until the new year.
Last week's loan signings, defender Scott Holding from Stockport County and midfielder Liam Loughlan from Salford City, should both figure.
Simon Haworth has the benefit of choosing from a fully fit squad for the first time since August as STALYBRIDGE CELTIC prepare to visit Basford United.
Callum Harris returns to the squad after a prolonged period out with a back injury.
He made a cameo appearance as a substitute in the midweek FA Trophy defeat at Farsley but could start tomorrow as Celtic attempt to win for the first time at Greenwich Avenue.
In the first division west, new signing Sidi Sanago will be in the GLOSSOP NORTH END squad for the home clash with midtable Kidsgrove Athletic and skipper Lee Wilshaw is back after being sidelined for the victory at Prescot.
In further good news for the Hillmen, Reuben Dass is once again training with the first team since damaging a knee in pre-season. Khius Metz is back in light training.
In a trio of loan deals, Mitch Glover and Ethan Stanton have gone to Rocester and Alex Maloney has joined Barnoldswick.
At Seel Park, Dave Fish says his MOSSLEY squad is down to the bare bones as he looks to arrest the five-game slide that has seen his team fall from top of the table to seventh — and go out of the FA Trophy and Manchester Premier Cup — with a much-needed win at 1874 Northwich.
Dec Evans is likely to miss out and Antony Brown, Dale Latham, Dave Kuba Kuba and Will Shepherd are all on the long-term injured list.
However, Ben Richardson has been recalled from New Mills. Fish added: "There could possibly be some new faces joining us after the weekend.
In National League North things remain largely the same for CURZON ASHTON who are home to an Alfreton side that has lost its last three league matches. Harry Flowers and Dom Knowles are still injured and Matty Challinor is suspended.

What's your dream writer's room?
Do you mean like who I would have in a writers room or what shows specifically?? Cause my initial reaction was by show so here’s that:I’d think psych first because it was with that show and the commentaries on the DVDs that I really learned about writers rooms and theirs sounded so amazing and it made me wanna get into screenwriting for a little whileThen maybe Parks because I think it would’ve been such a privilege to experience Harris and I feel like I always heard good stuff about that writers roomLast I’d say Arrested Development because Mitch is a genius and it would be a thrill to see how he pieces together a story or a runner, especially with how damn complex the comedy got in that show As for specific people? I think this is what I would want based on who’s writing I’ve enjoyed in the past. I realize some of these people don’t write anymore but oh well:- Mike Schur (probably as a showrunner tbh)- Tracey Wigfield- Harris Wittels- Mindy Kaling- Chelsea Peretti- Donald Glover- Kay Cannon- Joe Mande- Emily Spivey- Alan YangIs that too many people? Idk but I think this is who it would be

This Cult From the 80s Was Patient Zero for Epstein and Pizzagate Conspiracies
On February 4, 1987, a woman in Tallahassee, Florida called the cops on a man playing in a park with six “unkempt” children. In doing so, she unwittingly sparked a long-lasting conspiracy theory about the government’s involvement in child sex abuse that—thanks in part to recent theories surrounding Comet Ping Pong or the Jeffery Epstein’s death—still enjoys life to this day, centered around a mysterious group called The Finders.
Late last month, after years of demand from conspiracy theorists, the FBI released over 300 pages of documents related to The Finders—a D.C.-based organization whose origins date back before WWII but didn’t become known to the general public until that phone call in Tallahassee swept them up in the Satanic Panic of the late 80s. The police reports, memos, and archival press clippings—particularly related to the arrest of two members in 1987 on misdemeanor child-abuse charges that were dropped a few weeks later—have recaptured the attention of conspiracy theorists around the Internet.
The release of the Finders documents, after years of requests, is as good a time as any to look back at an incident that set the stage for several modern child trafficking conspiracy theories. These were among the most heavily requested documents from the FBI due to the lingering, decades-old allegation that the group was some kind of front for the CIA, which led to a coverup of the Finders’ most heinous and abusive activities. Anyone looking for a smoking gun in the docs will come away disappointed. But even just the agreed-upon facts around The Finders, and the mysteries those facts create, make for a compelling yarn in their own right.
By their own account, The Finders were a kind of alternative lifestyle commune based in the Washington, D.C. area, made up of 20 adults and 7 children around the time of the 1987 arrest. Whether they’re more Manson Family or Merry Pranksters—abusive Satanists or whimsical followers of a charismatic leader named Marion Pettie—depends on how much you’d like to read between the lines on the official reports, and which side of the conspiracy theory you fall. Whether they were evil or harmless, the existence of The Finders seemed to revolve entirely around Pettie, a high-school dropout who said later in life that the group began in the 1930s, when he rented two apartments in D.C. and “opened them up for anybody that wanted to come in, and the idea in my head was that they were going to teach me something about power, money, or sex.”
Pettie, who died in 2004, eventually evolved his group so that he was giving orders, and the Finders who obeyed would be forced to experiment with their lives in unconventional ways. To Washington City Paper in 1996, Pettie described his life’s work as a “topsy-turvy university” where he learns from the “fools” who come and follow him. Here’s the Finders experience as described by former member Robert Terrell, who met Pettie in 1971:
“Pettie used the term ‘pressure cooker,’” he says. “The idea was to explore your own person and discover your own true nature. You can’t do that just sitting at a desk or on a couch in a routine way. You have to have some experiences, so Pettie was good at structuring experiences from which you could learn. He called himself the ‘game caller,’ and what that meant was that he’d call a game for you to do something where you’d gain experience.”
For Terrell, game playing ranged from working a temp accounting job in a downtown D.C. law firm to catching a flight to Japan on two hours’ notice to gather information on Japanese companies and report back to Pettie. It was a subculture built on whimsy and intrigue, undergirded by a sense of tribal affiliation.
The Finders eschewed private property, taught their kids through “hands-on” experience, and were essentially invisible to the outside world until Feb. 4, 1987. When police responded to the aforementioned 911 call, they found two men in their 20s with six kids aged two to seven, all six of whom were dirty, bug-bitten, underfed, and living in a smelly van, according to police reports. The men were identified as Michael Holwell and Douglas Ammerman, and their conduct when questioned, as described in a handwritten report, was certainly suspicious:
“This writer spoke to Suspect #1, who stated that he and Suspect #2 were teachers from Washington D.C., and they were enroute to Mexico with the children. Suspect #1 stated that they were going to Mexico to set up a school for brilliant children. When asked about the parents of the children, Suspect #1 became very evasive and stated that the children’s parents were in Washington D.C. Suspect #2 refused to give this writer any information, and he pretended to faint when told he was under arrest for child abuse. Suspect #2 fell face down on the ground and refused to stand up. He was carried by this writer and two other law enforcement officers and placed into a patrol vehicle.”
When an officer talked to the oldest of the children, named Mary, the answers weren’t any more reassuring:
The strange reference to “the game-caller”—Pettie—was incomprehensible to investigators, and made them believe the children may have been brainwashed. The report adds that the investigator asked Mary about sexual abuse, and “she became very evasive. She denied any ‘bad touches’ or any inappropriate behavior by the adults, became very fidgety, and wanted to end the interview.”
When Tallahassee police contacted D.C. police, the story got weirder. When D.C. police found out the Florida cops had arrested Finders, “Their response was, ‘Holy shit! We’ve been looking at these freaks!’” according to Tallahassee officer Scott Hunt in a 1988 Washington City Paper article reprinted in the document dump. D.C. Police believed at the time that The Finders were satanists and/or survivalists, though not necessarily criminals. Just a few months earlier in December 1986, as noted in the February search warrant, a D.C. detective found the following in the rear of the house whose address Mary had given investigators:
A clearing approximately seventy yards behind the house and several stumps surrounding the open area. Several round stones had been gathered near the circle, this practice is sometimes used in Satanic rituals, and evidence that several persons had gathered in the clearing recently. The rear of the residence is covered from the alley by heavy bamboo growth, save a small entrance to the rear yard. In the rear yard was a small very ornate gravestone propped up against the support pillar for the porch.
The timing was perfect for the national media to descend on the case. The country was in the midst of a moral panic over satanic rituals, stoked by books like the discredited bestseller Michelle Remembers, media-circus trials like the McMartin Preschool case, and completely unfounded worries that heavy bands pledged allegiance to the devil. (If you’re interested in this ridiculous chapter of American conservatism, I highly recommend this 1988 Geraldo Rivera NBC special, “Devil Worship: Exposing Satan's Underground.”)
Further developments in the Finders investigation only increased the hysteria. Along with personal documents and then-uncommon computers, which featured esoteric communication between members over an early version of email, a search warrant on the Finders house in D.C. found photos of children with slaughtered goats. And in Florida, a doctor’s examination of the children did not rule out sexual abuse in two of them, but didn’t confirm it either.
Somehow, this led Officer Hunt to say in a press conference that “physical examinations showed sexual abuse to one of the children.” As City Paper describes in a retrospective article from 1988, the media coverage only got nuttier:
Mike Buchanan (of D.C.’s CBS affiliate), citing police sources, reported that the Finders had “worldwide connections,” used “sex and children to obtain power and money,” and had two bank accounts with over $100,000 in each one. The Glover Park residence was “a breeding house where women exercise great control.” The children in custody were “like shells, zombie-like.”
Officer Hunt of the Tallahassee PD didn’t calm anyone down. He told the Miami Herald, “It is our belief these kids were not kidnapped but that their parents gave them away, because one of the rites of passage into this satanic organization is that you have to give up your rights to you children, and that the leaders of this organization can do what they want to with your children.”
And he told the Tallahassee Democrat, “As far as we’re concerned, this goes from coast to coast and from Canada to Mexico … There is no doubt in our mind that this will have at least national, if not international, repercussions.”
But quickly, The Finders—specifically the biological mothers of the children found in Florida, who traveled to speak with investigators—gave explanations that apparently satisfied law enforcement. According to police reports, the mothers said that in late December the men in the group took the children to Kentucky, where they would work a construction job, while the women went to California for temporary work. When the men arrived for the project, however, they found that it was at a standstill, and instead told the women that they would take the children on an “adventure” to Florida.
According to the documents, the mothers understood why the police would be asking questions, and agreed that the men had handled the situation poorly by lying about Mexico. But they also insisted they had nothing to hide. They denied being Satanists—the photo of the slaughtered goat, they said, was similar to a biology class, and was part of a lesson for the children on where meat comes from. They insisted that they children were well fed, and they completely disbelieved any allegations that the men with their children could have committed sexual abuse.
These interviews seemingly convinced investigators that The Finders were abnormal, but not criminal. “Probably the two men-caretakers could have provided a better atmosphere for the children and been more open during interviewing by police at the scene,” the Tallahassee report allowed, before closing the case on a note of relative open-mindedness:
This hoopla would have all been forgotten, and certainly these documents would not have been so heavily requested from the FBI, if not for a report written by a junior Customs Service agent in 1987 that became public in 1993 and noted that the D.C. Police’s investigation of The Finders was dropped because it became “a CIA internal matter” and classified as secret. That revelation prompted a Department of Justice investigation to discover if there was some sort of cover-up at work, which found no evidence and was closed in 1994.
The CIA itself, of course, has maintained that this is a non-story, and says that there are only two connections between the organization and The Finders: Isabelle Pettie, Marion’s wife who died in 1984, was employed by the agency from 1952-1961; and in the 80s, the CIA used a company for its officers’ computer training that happened to employ members of The Finders. In the released documents, the belief that there’s some connection between the CIA and The Finders is most prominent in some April 1987 speculation from a D.C. police officer, written up in a bizarre official report:
Because of the assumption that there must be something bigger behind Marion Pettie’s band of weirdos, rumors about The Finders have outlived the group itself, which is believed to have died out with Pettie. But the most damning point against the CIA conspiracy comes from a 1993 FBI memo from their reopened investigation into the handling of the Finders case, which revealed no CIA interference in Florida when the child-abuse investigation would have been taking place.
The lingering doubt about the truth behind The Finders can maybe best be explained by the question, “Why the hell else would two men in their 20s take a bunch of kids who aren’t theirs down to Florida just to hang out and explore?” In the search for an answer, and in light of the many other conspiracies theories that implicate high government figures in sexual abuse—i.e. Pizzagate or Jeffery Epstein’s so-called suicide—The Finders become a sort of Patient Zero. If these documents had provided some kind of proof that U.S. Intelligence was covering up sexual abuse in the ’80s, the thinking in some corners of the internet goes, it wouldn’t have just shed light on an injustice from decades ago. It also would have provided much-needed support for the FBI/CIA conspiracies of today.
Of course, that the FBI’s documents don’t include a smoking gun for a CIA coverup probably isn’t going to change the minds of many conspiracy theorists. Motherboard has found many tweets and blog posts saying as much, and a page about the Finders on a conspiracy theory website notes that there is “clear evidence of suppression of an investigation into a child trafficking ring with blatantly obvious ties to US military and intelligence organizations.”
But in the absence of anything but old allegations, the theory that The Finders were somehow a part of the CIA looks more like an effort to impose some sense onto a mostly nonsensical group. Providing support for that logic is Wendell Minnick, an author and researcher of the group who said this to City Paper in 1996, as the group was disintegrating:
“The Finders would love you to think they’re a CIA front, but I would say they’re really nothing,” says Minnick. “You’re going to hear a lot of bullshit on the Finders, because they lie. These are dysfunctional adults, but they’re all working their asses off. They’re constantly working on some project. If you have a cult, the best way to control people is to keep them busy, to keep their minds occupied—if you have people standing around doing nothing, then they start thinking.”
You can poke holes in either side of this conspiracy theory if you set your mind to it, and maybe that’s just how Marion Pettie would have liked it. With its key figure long since passed, and the FBI's dossier now available for public consumption, it's unlikely that anyone searching for a satisfying conclusion to the saga of this strange cult will ever find it.

EDIT: This is just the stuff I’ve watched and enjoyed. It’s a fraction of what these streaming services have to offer.
I’m lucky enough that my brother shares his subscriptions with us, but it would be well worth the monthly subscription fee. I know a lot of people who have dropped cable because they were paying $100+ and signed up for Hulu, Netfilx, and HBO Now, and they’re paying less than $40 a month. If there’s something on that they can’t get through these services, they can pay a small amount to get a season pass on something like Amazon or iTunes. Still puts them way under what they were paying before.

At Historic Hearing, House Panel Explores Reparations
In 1865, following the liberation of African-American slaves after the Civil War, the federal government awarded 400,000 acres of coastal land to former slaves, which was rescinded a year later. In the late 1800s, the idea of pensions for former slaves — similar to pensions for Union soldiers — took hold did not pass Congress. Should the federal government provide reparations -- such as zero-interest loans for prospective black homeowners, free college tuition, community development plans to spur the growth of black-owned businesses in black neighborhoods -- to the relatives of former slaves: (1) Yes, (2) No? Why? What are the ethics underlying your decision?
Frail but sharp at 88, the Rev. Doris Sherman woke up at 4 a.m. on Wednesday to travel here from Philadelphia for an event that, even after the nation elected its first black president, she never thought she would see: a meeting in the capital of the United States on reparations for African-Americans.
Dressed all in white, the color of the suffragist movement — it was a coincidence, she said — Ms. Sherman, who is black, reflected on the unfulfilled Civil War-era promise to former slaves of “40 acres and a mule.” As a schoolteacher for 30 years before entering the ministry, she recalled so many black parents struggling to provide day care, their children “left back and left out.”
If the government did anything, she said, it should do something for the children. “We don’t want that mule now,” she said. “We don’t want that 40 acres. We are asking for remembrance. Remember the struggle. Remember the injustice and remember the now.”
Ms. Sherman was among hundreds of other mostly black spectators — so many that they filled three overflow rooms — who descended on Capitol Hill for Wednesday’s historic hearing, the first time Congress has considered a bill, H.R. 40, that would create a commission to develop proposals to address the lingering effects of slavery and consider a “national apology” for the harm it has caused.
The sometimes raucous session before a subcommittee of the House Judiciary Committee lasted nearly three and a half hours and dug into the darkest corners of the nation’s history, exposing the bitter cultural and ideological divides in Washington and beyond. Republican lawmakers and witnesses — including Burgess Owens, the retired football star — were jeered when they argued that black people could pull themselves up by their own bootstraps and that reparations might damage their psyches.
“We’ve become successful like no other because of this great opportunity to live the American dream,” Mr. Owens, who is black, told the panel. “Let’s not steal that from our kids by telling them they can’t do it.”
That the hearing took place at all was remarkable, a reflection of the shifting landscape in the Democratic Party and the wrenching national debate over racial justice in the era of President Trump. Nearly 60 House Democrats, including Speaker Nancy Pelosi, support the bill. And at least 11 Democratic presidential candidates — with former Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. a notable exception — have embraced either the concept of reparations or the bill to study it.
“We have not had a conversation about reparations on this scale or level since the Reconstruction Era,” William A. Darity Jr., a professor of public policy at Duke University who is writing a book on reparations, said in a telephone interview. “To be blunt, I am more optimistic than I have ever been in my life about the prospect of the enactment of a reparations program that is comprehensive and transformative.”
The first time the federal government considered reparations for black people was in 1865, when 400,000 acres of coastal land were awarded to former slaves, the result of a special order issued by the Union general, William T. Sherman. It lasted less than a year. When President Abraham Lincoln died, he was succeeded by Andrew Johnson, who rescinded Sherman’s order.
In the late 1800s, the idea of pensions for former slaves — similar to pensions for Union soldiers — took hold, championed for a time by a Nebraska congressman. But the idea fizzled in the face of strong opposition from federal agencies.
In 1989, Representative John Conyers Jr., who retired in 2017, introduced legislation to create a commission to develop proposals for reparations. He introduced it every year for nearly 30 years. It went nowhere. Even President Barack Obama opposed reparations, calling the idea impractical.
It is that bill, titled the “Commission to Study and Develop Reparation Proposals for African-Americans Act,” and now sponsored by Representative Sheila Jackson Lee, Democrat of Texas, that the subcommittee has before it. It would authorize $12 million for a 13-member commission to study the effects of slavery and make recommendations to Congress.
“I just simply ask: Why not?” Ms. Jackson Lee said Wednesday. “And why not now?”
But Professor Darity’s optimism may be overstated.
Even if it passes the House, the bill has little chance of getting through the Republican-controlled Senate, where Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the majority leader, spoke out against it on Tuesday, telling reporters he does not favor reparations “for something that happened 150 years ago, for whom none of us currently living are responsible.”
Mr. McConnell’s remark prompted a sharp rebuke from the hearing’s star witness, the writer Ta-Nehisi Coates, whose 2014 article “The Case for Reparations” in The Atlantic rekindled the debate, arguing that African-Americans had been exploited by nearly every American institution. Mr. Coates, who is black, ticked off a list of government-sponsored discriminatory policies — including those in Mr. McConnell’s birthplace of Alabama — such as redlining and poll taxes.
“He was alive for the redlining of Chicago and the looting of black homeowners of some $4 billion,” Mr. Coates said. “Victims of their plunder are very much alive today. I am sure they would love a word with the majority leader.”
“While emancipation dead-bolted the door against the bandits of America, Jim Crow wedged the windows wide open,” he added. “That’s the thing about Senator McConnell’s ‘something.’ It was 150 years ago, and it was right now.”
Advocates for reparations say their cause is misunderstood, and emphasize that it does not necessarily mean the government would be writing checks to black people, though Mr. Coates said he was not opposed to the idea.
Rather, they say, the government could offer various types of assistance — zero-interest loans for prospective black homeowners, free college tuition, community development plans to spur the growth of black-owned businesses in black neighborhoods — to address the social and economic fallout of slavery and racially discriminatory federal policies that have resulted in a huge wealth gap between white and black people.
“When a black woman or man is arrested, they may land in jail for how many days because they don’t have the home, the mortgage to get the bail — and cash bail is discriminatory,” Julianne Malveaux, an economist, told the subcommittee, her voice rising in anger. “I want y’all Congress people to deal with issues of economic structure.”
Wednesday’s hearing was laden with symbolism. This year is the 400th anniversary of the first documented arrival of Africans to the port of Jamestown in what was then the colony of Virginia. Wednesday, June 19, was Juneteenth, the holiday that celebrates the end of slavery in the United States. And the bill carries the designation H.R. 40, a reference to “40 acres and a mule.”
As passions flared, the subcommittee chairman, Representative Steve Cohen of Tennessee, repeatedly told the spectators to simmer down. And politics was at work: A Democratic presidential candidate, Senator Cory Booker, who is carrying the bill in the Senate, was the first witness, declaring himself “brokenhearted and very angry” at the nation’s reluctance to deal with what he called “a cancer on the soul of our country.”
“I believe right now we have a historic opportunity to break the silence,” Mr. Booker said. “To speak to the ugly past and talk constructively about how to move this nation forward.”
One Republican congressman, Representative Louie Gohmert of Texas, lashed out at “today’s claim that the Republicans are the party of racism,” noting that southern segregationist Democrats were responsible for the era of Jim Crow.
Another Republican, Representative Mike Johnson of Louisiana, drew hisses when he suggested that black leaders like Frederick Douglass and Booker T. Washington “encouraged people to take control of and responsibility for their own lives, because that gives every human being a greater sense of meaning, purpose and satisfaction.”
The actor and activist Danny Glover told of his great-grandmother, Mary Brown, a slave who was freed by Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation of 1863. A documentary filmmaker, Katrina Browne, who is white, recounted her painful discovery that her Rhode Island ancestors had been “the largest slave trading family in United States history,” and brought more than 12,000 Africans to the Americas in chains.
Her message to the lawmakers: “It is good for the soul of a person, a people and of a nation to set things right.”
