Danish modern interior design: simple and functional
Danish modern interior design is characterized by its simplicity, functionality, and focus on quality craftsmanship. It emerged in Denmark in the mid-20th century and has since become a popular interior design style around the world.
The hallmark of Danish modern design is its clean lines and minimalist approach. Furniture pieces are often designed with a focus on functionality and practicality, without sacrificing aesthetic appeal. Natural materials such as wood and leather are favored, and pieces are often left unfinished or with a light stain to showcase the natural beauty of the material.
Danish modern interior design is the emphasis on functionality. Every item in the space serves a purpose, and there is no excess clutter or decoration. This minimalist approach creates a calm and uncluttered environment, which is ideal for relaxation and focus.
The key features of Danish modern interior design include clean lines, natural materials, and a neutral color palette. The furniture is often made from materials such as wood, leather, and metal, and features simple, geometric shapes. Danish modern designers also prioritize functionality, so furniture pieces are often designed with multiple purposes in mind.
The color palette of Danish modern design is typically muted and neutral, with shades of white, gray, beige, and black being common. This allows the natural materials and simple forms of the furniture to take center stage.
Another defining feature of Danish modern design is the use of lighting to create a warm and cozy atmosphere. Lighting fixtures are often designed with a minimalist approach, using simple shapes and natural materials like wood and metal. This helps to create a sense of hygge, which is a Danish word that means "coziness" or "contentment."
Another important aspect of Danish modern design is the use of space. Rooms are designed to be open and uncluttered, with an emphasis on creating a sense of calm and serenity. Multi-functional pieces of furniture are also common, with items such as a coffee table that can be transformed into a dining table, or a sofa that can be converted into a guest bed.
Danish modern design has been popular for decades and continues to be a sought-after style in both homes and businesses. Its clean, functional aesthetic is perfect for those who value simplicity and understated elegance. Whether you're looking to redecorate your home or add a touch of Scandinavian charm to your business, Danish modern design is a timeless choice.
Finally, Danish modern design places a strong emphasis on craftsmanship and quality. The furniture and decor in these spaces are often made by hand, using traditional techniques and high-quality materials. This attention to detail and quality ensures that the space is not only beautiful but also durable and long-lasting.
Overall, Danish modern design is a style that values simplicity, functionality, and quality craftsmanship. It is a timeless style that has stood the test of time and continues to be a popular choice for those who appreciate understated elegance and practicality.

1/6th scale Danish Modern Mid Century Sofa for 12″ Integrity dolls and action figures
I made this by request from a client who collects Integrity dolls, which are taller than Barbie. It’s an old favorite; I’ve made so many of these in multiple scales as custom orders, but I increased the length, depth, and height for dolls and figures with longer legs. I don’t have a Poppy Parker :( so I had Cap fill in for her. And yes, I know; he has no shoes. I can’t find the ones I want. ;)

This is very different and pretty cool- Lili Diallo is a Parisian, a stylist, and lives in New York. She has given her loft, a former tailoring workshop in Brooklyn, a look of “exquisite neglect.” Have you ever heard of that look? It’s new to me, so I was curious.
In the dining room, she has the emblematic mid century 'Panton' chairs with a vintage flower fabric screen. The loft’s style is a bohemian-chic, where the broken, the imperfections of the walls and floors, the paint strokes and the mix of styles of second-hand or Ikea furniture , further accentuate its unpretentious beauty.
In the office is a Danish sofa from the 50s.
Also in the office, is a red Moroccan pouf and a flea market table.
In the kitchen, Ikea clock, Urban Outfitters deer plate and Vogue Paris calendar.
She’s got an old American fridge full of magnets and inspiring cutouts that she accumulates.
In the bedroom, the white sideboard is from Ikea and the porcelain Chinese foo dog is from a flea market, as is the pink poster and painting. The lamp is from a vintage store and the stool in front of the bed is recovered and reupholstered by Lili.
On the old table, a flea market find, Missoni towels. The lantern is from China Town and the mirror was bought in a vintage store.
Along with the house's original antique bathtub, a red container and a black ceramic stool. The imitation cheetah screen is the work was made by Lili. She kept the copper pipes from the ceiling for their decorative nuance.

It’s really good news things are moving along with your mobile home. You will be in your new home before the holidays. Pretty much be all moved in and get to enjoy the holidays at your new home and also with family. Will the previous owner install the cabinets before closing? I lived in two different mobile home parks and I loved both of them. I hope you will share pictures when ready. Did you take most of your furniture or are you buying new stuff for your place
I down-sized, never expecting to find a place w/ almost the same square footage as the one I left. Consequently, there's going to be a lotta open space, which is NOT bad. I kept my husband's Steelcase Modular Work Station Modules because they look like a starship command center. No joke. They assemble into a U-shaped arrangement w/ 2 angled-corner workstations attached to 3 tables in 5', 7', & 10' lengths. The work surface is pale mottled grey w/ brushed steel legs & 2 nearly black file cabinets. I plan on putting my computer in one corner & my sewing machine in the other.
I don't plan on having a sofa or a big screen TV. I can stream movies on my large screen monitor or watch them on my laptop in my muted blue velvet recliner.
The walls in the house are already white. I reckon this is gonna look stark until I put up stained wood shelves I packed for my books & decorative objects & cover the walls w/ my collection of framed art. I could also make a statement w/ curtains over the expansive windows. But, I can't decide what statement I feel like making. I'll make up my mind when everything else is in place.
I also kept his bedroom suite w/ SIX pieces, solid honey oak inside & out, which are close to the color of the floors, very 70's w/ rounded corners. That's more than enough to set up 2 bedrooms. In fact, one or more pieces might end up in the living area because I will have nowhere else to put them.
I've also got a dark oak round pedestal table w/ 4 chairs & custom cushions I made for them. And a Danish walnut Mid-Century Modern china hutch to display my collection of Blue Calico china. I'm a person w/ eclectic tastes.
You may notice I don't mention a sofa or side chairs. We never used the ones we had & I gave them to his oldest daughter. When people came to visit, we had extra rolling desk chairs for them to sit inside the circle of our workspace. I'll do the same. Maybe I'll find child-size desk chairs...HA!

Mid-century Bohemian interior design: vintage and eclectic
Mid-century Bohemian interior design is a blend of two styles: the sleek and modern lines of mid-century design, and the eclectic, free-spirited aesthetic of Bohemian decor. This style features vintage and retro furnishings, mixed with global and handcrafted accessories, resulting in a unique and eclectic look.
Mid-century Bohemian interior design is a style that combines the vintage appeal of mid-century modern design with the eclectic and artistic vibe of bohemian decor. The result is a unique and comfortable space that is both stylish and personal.
This style often incorporates natural materials like wood, leather, and jute, as well as warm, earthy colors such as mustard yellow, burnt orange, and olive green. Furniture is often low-slung and streamlined, with clean lines and geometric shapes, and can be mixed with vintage pieces and colorful textiles.
Plants and natural elements are also an important part of the Mid-century Bohemian look, with large leafy plants and natural wood finishes bringing the outdoors inside. Layered textiles like rugs, throws, and pillows in a variety of textures and patterns add to the cozy and eclectic feel of the space.
This style also often incorporates unique and handcrafted items, such as macrame wall hangings, vintage pottery, and woven baskets. It is a great way to showcase your personal style and love for vintage pieces in a modern and comfortable way.
To achieve a mid-century Bohemian interior, start by selecting furniture with clean lines and geometric shapes, such as a sleek leather sofa or a Danish-inspired armchair. Mix in vintage pieces, like a mid-century teak coffee table or a retro-inspired bar cart, to add character and charm.
In terms of color palette, mid-century Bohemian design often incorporates warm earth tones, like rust, mustard, and olive green, as well as rich jewel tones like deep blue and emerald green. Textured materials like natural wood, woven textiles, and vintage leather can add warmth and depth to the space.
Bohemian accents can be incorporated through textiles and accessories, such as a vintage rug, colorful throw pillows, or a macrame wall hanging. Global and handcrafted pieces, like a Moroccan pouf or a carved wooden bowl, can also add a sense of worldly charm to the space.
Lighting in a mid-century Bohemian interior should be warm and inviting, with the use of warm bulbs and natural light. Select lamps with interesting shapes, such as a sculptural ceramic table lamp or a woven pendant light, to add visual interest.
In terms of artwork and decor, Mid-century Bohemian interior design often features abstract paintings and prints, as well as unique and vintage pieces such as ceramic figurines or wall sculptures. Wall art can also include macrame or woven tapestries, adding to the bohemian vibe of the space.
In summary, mid-century Bohemian interior design is a playful and eclectic style that combines vintage and global elements with sleek mid-century design. This style allows for a lot of personal expression and creativity, resulting in a unique and personalized space.

Movies I watched this week - 39
I spent over 50 (!) hours on the sofa this week, (enjoying myself 85% of the time)...
Sløborn, an ominous Danish-German TV pandemic series, very much like Soderbergh’s ‘Contagion’ and in ‘Black Mirror’ style. Normal life of a small island community between Denmark and Germany breaks down and completely collapses when it is hit by a lethal bird flue like virus.
It was extremely prescient, as it was shot in 2019, before Covid! Conceived as Si-fi, it looks today like TV, because the series was able to capture everything that happened around the world after January 2020 in accurate details.
With Roland Møller (of ‘Riders of Justice’). 7+/10
✴️
My introduction to “The grandmother of The French New Wave”, Agnès Varda (Hard to believe that I never saw her films before!):
✳️✳️✳️ “Inspiration, Creation and Sharing...” Varda by Agnès, my first Varda is her last 2019 auto-biography, in which, at 90, she shared footage and stories from her life and work. The first sample clip (of meeting her Uncle Yanco in Sausalito) won me over, and the rest convinced me to catch up on everything I’ve missed through the years. What a wonderful artist!
✳️✳️✳️ Cléo from 5 to 7. A feminine film about female identity - a new favorite! A beautiful singer must wait 2 hours for the results of her cancer tests. With a magnifique mid-film scene (at 0;38) of the heartbreaking chanson 'Sans Toi', marking the beginning of her quiet transformation.
✳️✳️✳️ Vagabond, a story of a lonely, young woman, an unapologetic drifter, unglamorous, aimless, independent, desperately lost. Dark and nonjudgmental exploration of the refusal to conform to anything. 8+/10.
✳️✳️✳️ (For Sammy - Per our conversation). The Gleaners and I, "The eighth best documentary film of all time”, per ‘Sight & Sound poll. Derived from the famous painting by Millet. Simply wonderful!
✳️✳️✳️ One Hundred And One Nights, 100 year old Michel Piccoli “Monsieur Simon Cinema”, hires a young girl to reminisce with about the history of cinema. An unsuccessful Meta-film that nevertheless is a love letter for cinephiles. Populated by 3 dozens of Who’s Who of French (and World) stars, playacting in this symbolic, Fellinisque fable that draws upon the classics. Mastroianni, Depardieu, Belmondo, Alain Delon, Catherine Deneuve, Jeanne Moreau, Anouk Aimée, Fanny Ardant, Gina Lollobrigida, Jane Birkin, etc, etc..
(Photo Above).
✳️✳️✳️ The Young Girls of Rochefort, the wonderful, colorful, sentimental musical by Varda’s husband Jacques Demy, with the most beautiful woman in the world and her sister. Romantic eye candy set to music by Michel Legrand. A year later Deneuve would do Belle de Jour, and Françoise Dorléac would die in a car accident, 8+/10
✳️✳️✳️ Even better, The Young Girls Turn 25, Varda’s 1993 behind the scenes documentary and return to small town Rocheford, to show how it changed the town and left an impression. 9/10
“...The memory of happiness is perhaps also happiness...”
✴️
The other Jacques Demy modern opera The Umbrellas of Cherbourg knocked me over all over again. Catherine Deneuve’s angelic beauty in this film made me cry for the duration like a baby. And not only at the train station when they say goodbye forever.
10/10
✴️
Night moves, a tense thriller by Kelly Reichardt, about three radical environmentalists who blow up an Oregon dam. Slow and tense, and like her ‘First Cow’, watching it filled me with constant, low-level anxiety. The off-screen sabotage is placed at the exact mid-point of the movie: The first half is the preparation for it, and the second half shows the aftermath of the act. 7+/10
✴️
2 unexpected Small Town gems by Miguel Arteta:
✳️✳️✳️ The good Girl, an odd and surprising mismatched romance between 30 year old Jennifer Aniston and Jake Gyllenhaal (22) as employees of a Texas big-box store that is always empty. Her voice-over reminded me of True Romance’s Alabama Whitman. 7/10
✳️✳️✳️ Ed Helms, a sheltered insurance salesman from the backwaters of Wisconsin, goes to an convention in the big city of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The nearly conventional story arc has some genuinely heartfelt funny moments. With Maeby Fünke, as Bree the prostitute and Sigourney Weaver as the ex-teacher he balls. Also a surprising drug party, where he smoke crack cocaine and loves it. 5+/10
✴️
Same theme of people prostituting their own ‘morals’, the notoriously-prudish 1993 Indecent Proposal didn’t age too well. “Billionaire”-porn that asks the question ‘How much would you pay for one night with Robert Redford?’ Gratuitous semi-naked Demi Moore included.
Related: “Stop hitting the button!”
✴️
Wildland (Kød & blod = Flesh and blood), an uncomfortable and claustrophobic Danish gangster thriller about a 17 year old girl who moves in with the criminal family of Sidse Babett Knudsen, her estranged aunt. 6+/10
“For some people, things go wrong before they even begin”
✴️
Jim Jarmusch‘s Broken Flowers, a touching road film with Bill Murray, as an old ‘Don Juan’ who receive a pink, unsigned letter from an old lover, letting him know that he has a 20 year old son he never knew about.
Loveliest film of the week.
✴️
The 2 films directed by Tom Ford:
✳️✳️✳️ A single Man, a sad and lonely gay professor, closeted in 1962 Los Angeles, is preparing to kill himself with a gun, after his boyfriend / love of his life had died in a car accident. Mute and haunting aesthetics in the fashion designer’s debut film, based on a Christopher Isherwood novel.
The ‘Stormy Weather’ dance scene between Charley and George. 8/10
✳️✳️✳️ Nocturnal Animals: Amy Adams is an unhappy owner of a fancy art gallery who receives a disturbing book manuscript written by her ex-husband, which symbolizes their relationship 20 years prior. Rarefied visuals and distinctive style.
Starts with an astonishing scene of obese old ladies dancing naked at Amy’s gala event. Michael Shannon rules as a dying Texas detective! 6+/10.
✴️
Jean Vigo’s 1933 classic Zero for Conduct was so blatantly anarchistic, it was immediately banned in France until after WW2. In silent film style, it tells about a group of mischievous kids who rebel against the authorities of their old-fashioned boarding school. Part-inspiration for Truffaut's 400 Blows.
✴️
Anatomy of a murder, Otto Preminger’s 1960 courtroom drama, with opening credits by Saul Bass. Crisp black & white cinematography, and with rape victim Lee Remick playing it as an outgoing loose girl of ambiguous morals, a modern floozy. 7/10.
✴️
Blush, a wondrous, spectacularly-animated, wordless short by Joe Mateo. What starts as a riff on ‘The Little Prince’, ends up like the opening montage from ‘Up’. The obvious realization that this is a personal metaphor makes the story even deeper.
I watched it twice back to back. 10/10

If You're Not in the Obit, Eat Breakfast - 95 year old Carl Reiner asks a bunch of charming nonagenarian friends how they manage to live so well for so long. Their answers may (not) shock you...
Spry Dick Van Dyke (92) and half-his-age wife end the film with a lovely rendition of “Young at heart”

Hi-school-level adaptation of Thomas Piketty's book Capital in the 21st Century. A breezy discussion of how slave economy and colonialist military repression 300 years ago turn into extreme capitalism of inequality & tax-avoidance today. America is now similar economically to what England was in the early 1800s. A tiny percentage of society controls almost all its wealth. (Full text of the book here).

Ride the eagle, a flat new indie about a guy whose estranged hippy mother leaves him her cabin at the lake when she dies, but only if he complete a certain list of tasks. Could be so much better, but the actor playing the guy was just so terrible. Unlike JK Simmons who had a small role. Best detail, when he discovers that all the cabinets in the house are full with pot.

Old, my first, (and possibly last), M. Night Shyamalan. The seductive premise of a secluded beach at a fancy tropical resort that ages everybody who comes there, turns into an unconvincing Twilight Zone bore.
...”(Gurgling sounds)”...

First watch: I never saw (any) Planet of the apes before, and in spite of my misgivings, gave it a go. 100% anthropomorphic, it couldn’t visualize a universe different from the American mindset of that period. Preachy and very Rod Sterling-like. "It's a madhouse in here”. Pass!

The latest Veritasium YouTube video about bowling current technology. Always interesting.
