10 Thrifting tips the thrilling continuation
I am a dedicated thrifter and I have done a few thrifting tips posts, things to look for, how to find the best stuff. I had an excellent day thrifting today and decided it was a good day to polish up a draft I had and post it. So read more for tips to get the goodies.
If you buy fairly plain wooden furniture, it doesn’t take a whole lot of expertise to refinish it. You can get a cheap palm sander for less than 50 bucks, and a small tin of furniture wax goes a long, long, loooong way. Or you can get Danish oil if you want a satin finish or Teak oil for a gloss finish. Don’t let Youtube videos make you believe you have to test out 10 zillion different coloured stains unless you are aiming for a very specific look. Just make sure you slap something nourishing on the wood after you’ve sanded it. Also remember that whatever product you use; multiple light coats will come out better than one thick coat. There’s a huge amount of satisfaction in looking at a gorgeous chunk of wood you’ve bought back to life.
French milled/triple milled soap. Old ladies like to give soap as gifts and people tend to stick it in their drawer to scent their clothes and never actually use it, eventually they have a clean out and this unused soap goes to the thrift store still in it’s original paper wrapping. This soap is expensive. This soap is fantastic. The milling process creates a very different product than the bars you get at the supermarket. It doesn’t go goopy and melty even if you leave it sitting in a puddle in your shower, it’s not as drying to your skin, the scent stays on your skin for longer. These bars last for months, it’s well worth picking them up if you like the scent.
Blue Willow. Would you like to have a nice set of china but don’t want to drop a lot of money on something that might look dated in 10 years? Collect blue willow from thrift stores. Blue willow has been around for hundreds of years and it’s going to be around for hundreds more. It can be slotted in to almost any home style, classical, boho, maximalist, scandi, etc, etc. Because it’s been around for so long pretty much every manufacturer has done it, so you find it really often at thrift stores and it’s easy to pick up a couple of plates here and a serving bowl there. Also, because so many companies have done it over such a long period it’s possible to pick up modern dishwasher safe dinner plates that you can use alongside a lovely 100-year-old antique gravy boat.
Gifts. Never feel ashamed of buying gifts from thrift stores. The perfect vintage item is way more meaningful than any amount of new stuff. And if you’re buying for someone who doesn’t like vintage; if something looks new and undamaged how is the recipient going to know that it’s not new?
Get yourself a thrifting routine. You’re gonna find the best stuff if you go often so don’t just randomly go every now and then. People who say they never find anything are the ones who only call into a thrift store every couple of months and expect something amazing to just drop into their lap. Set a day once a week, or every other week or once a month, but make a commitment to go on a regular basis.
If you see something that you think you like but you’re not 100% sure, as long as you can afford it and have a place for it, get the thing. Take it home, live with it. Maybe you’ll decide you don’t really like it and take it back to the thrift store and consider the price you paid a charitable donation. But sometimes you bring something home that you kinda like and end up absolutely loving it. Some of my favourite things in my house are things I wasn’t completely sure about when I was in the thrift store. There’s nothing worse than the regret of leaving something behind because you weren’t sure about it, then deciding actually I do want that thing, but it’s gone, and you’ll never find another quite like it.
If possible, go with someone who knows your likes/tastes. It’s amazing the number of times I’ve been in a thrift store with my mother or best friend, and they’ve found something I love that I hadn’t even noticed. Plus they’ll be dirty rotten enablers and encourage you to buy the thing that you love but you’re not sure you can justify to yourself.
There are a bunch of Youtubers who do thrift flips. If there’s some décor item that’s in all the stores at the moment and you love it, but can’t justify spending money on it, then it might be worth looking up to see if anyone has done a thrift flip and can give you a tutorial on how to turn a thrifted item into the hot décor items of your dreams.
Keep the cycle going. If you have stuff in your home that you no longer use/love, then donate it. If you’ve traded up and found something better but your original thing still has life in it, donate. Even if you originally bought something from a thrift store no one is gonna be mad if you send it right on back (unless you’ve used it to death, and it really should be heading for landfill).
Don’t put yourself in a box. Don’t refuse to get something because it’s not ‘your style’. What is ‘your style’? Things that you love, that make you happy. Do you love this thing? Does it make you smile? Then it’s your style. Honestly style is something that evolves organically, that grows and expands as we’re exposed to new things. If you try to follow a certain style rigidly then you’ll end up with a home that looks boring and cookie-cutter. Throw in something unexpected that speaks to you. Then throw in another of those things and another and another and pretty soon you’ll end up with a home that actually is your style – maybe you just don’t know what your style really is yet. I think of myself as very confident in my style, but I’m constantly stumbling across new things that I didn’t know I needed in my life.

Oak Coffee Table: Natural wood tones and clean lines make this a staple for any Scandinavian-style living room.
Modular Sofa: Functional, stylish, and comfortable, a modular sofa adapts to your needs while maintaining that minimalist vibe.
Oak Shelving Units: Light wood and open design, perfect for displaying minimal decor and keeping the space airy.
French Style Wooden Sideboards: A touch of French charm adds warmth and character to this otherwise minimalist aesthetic.

Wingback Armchairs: Cozy and inviting, they bring a touch of vintage French sophistication to your space.
5. Modern Aesthetic: Sleek, Simple, and Stylish
The Vibe: Clean lines, bold accents, and minimal clutter. Modern decor is all about creating a space that feels streamlined, functional, and stylish with a focus on open spaces and neutral palettes.
Furniture to Love:
Glass Coffee Table: A sleek, minimal piece that adds a light, airy feel to your living room without overwhelming the space.
Sectional Sofa: A modern must-have, sectional sofas offer comfort and style in one clean package, perfect for lounging or entertaining.

a wild sofa appears
more projects in progress I've failed to document, but:
cat orb approves.
My family are chair people. I've had this dumb IKEA Pöang chair for decades now, and a rotating supporting cast of others that keep breaking. (Another story there.) So for the last year I've had just a single chair in the middle of the room (the only room), and the bed in the far corner acting as an ertsatz couch.
In retrospect it's a little ridiculous to think I've gone this long with a single armchair and a twin bed as my only furniture, but I think I've got two justifications. First is that I've still been moving around things and unpacking/repacking as I work on projects, and it was hard to visualize what the space deserves. Second is that I'm exceedingly picky, and once you drop a couple grand on a piece, pay to have it delivered, and cajole a family member into dragging it up a flight of stairs, you better damn like it. Not like returning an Amazon order.
Back in February I pilgrimaged to Palm Springs for Modernism Week, and poked around the monthly Vintage Market. One vendor was selling a beautiful Adrian Pearsall style platform sofa, along with a Poul Jensen-style Z-sofa.
And the price was unbeatable. Until I saw the shipping cost to up here, which came to an additional almost 50%.
And realistically, both are a bit small. A slightly generous loveseat, or a very cozy three-seater. Perfect for my old 500SF apartment (if I didn't have all those chairs). I don't like sitting close to people. I have plenty of room, but not for a sectional.
Locally and online I wasn't seeing anything I was jazzed about for how much things were. Lots of tufts and skirts, bollard arms, pale cream upholstery. Truthfully cleanability is a major priority in, well, all of my decisions. I wanted something on legs I could vacuum under, and cushions I can remove and clean. Not really a fan of leather, being vegetarian. And vinyl is just horrible.
Oh, and I don't like sinking in to a couch. It's all about back angle and height. I like things low and upright. Hence my affinity for the platform sofas.
A few weeks ago we stopped in Kasala, a store that has the distinction of being the only furniture store in Pike Place Market, and additionally the only one I know of with a real local warehouse in-city, partly to poke around, partly to rest after a long day at the market. It was perfect. The color, the wood accent, the steel legs! A little bulky for my taste—I don't care for armrests—but could easily work with a mid-mod or min-mod style.
As I promised the salesperson, I'd go home, have a glass of wine or three, and make a decision. And I accidentally bought three. It wasn't the wine, it was the website freezing up repeatedly, I swear.
The next day I somehow convinced my mother to help, as we frantically rented a van from Home Depot, ran over to the warehouse about a block away, dropped it off across town, and returned the vehicle in the 90-minute window before extra charges kicked in. $15 for DIY delivery was a heck of a deal compared to $200 to have to dumped in the driveway.
I bought that light years ago and never found a good place for it
As for the bed: I finally ditched my deflated twin I've had since college for a full-size memory foam, selected after literally 4 hours of flopping around the IKEA showroom models. By that point my brain had turned to mush, and rather than choosing my dream danish modern bed frame, I just grabbed a basic steel platform. At least its not going to collapse on me in the middle of the night again. Despite the extra room, the cat still sleeps draped across my neck.

The Danish Red Cross made 100 million from its thrift stores by 2022
Both in terms of turnover and earnings, the Red Cross' recycling shops have broken records in 2022.
DKK 100 million is the profit from the Red Cross' recycling shops in 2022. It is the aid organisation's biggest ever profit from thrift stores and a 35 percent increase from the previous record in 2019. This appears from a press release from the Red Cross. A record was also broken in terms of revenue. The 255 thrift stores had a total turnover of DKK 281 million.
"I am incredibly proud of the results achieved in our 255 stores in 2022. It's good for the climate, it's good for socially vulnerable people. I think it's incredibly nice that such turnover can be made by volunteers,” says Tina Donnerborg, head of Red Cross Recycling[1], to Ritzau.
Revenue is the money that comes into a company from the sale of products or services. That is, income before expenses. In fact, it is going so well that in some categories the Red Cross is finding it difficult to keep up. "As the Danes have become more thrifty and don't buy so much new things, we get fewer donations, and we now lack different categories of goods," says Tina Donnerborg. Especially when it comes to clothing, the Red Cross finds that it has more customers than goods.
Inflation has affected the Red Cross, which like many others has raised prices. According to the head of recycling, the organisation has a strong focus on setting the right price when it receives good quality goods. At the same time, the Red Cross wants to be a place where people can afford to shop.
Based on the organisation's customer surveys, Tina Donnerborg estimates that there are two factors in particular at play that make people buy more recycling. "The primary motive is actually climate awareness, which is a very, very big driving force to that extent, especially among the younger target group. With the slightly older target group, it's very much an aversion to the overconsumption society that many think we've got," says Tina Donnerborg.
Red Cross Recycling opens a webshop on 1 May so that one can also buy recycled goods online. The earnings from the Red Cross' recycling sales go to emergency relief work and social initiatives in Denmark and around the world.

I have loved and posted this kitchen before, and just came across the rest of the house. It’s a family home in Israel and I always thought it looked like my grandmother’s Italian kitchen.
I didn’t expect the living room to look like this. The home of Karen & Sivan is filled with furniture pieces that Karen collected and brought from different places all over the world. The table is from England, the mustard colored chair is from Denmark and the rocking horse from a flea market in Belgium. The flower ornament and the pictures on the wall are from the US.
The chairs were found in the street and Karen restored them. On the shelves she has placed her vintage collection.
The vintage collection varies; ceramic Dutch houses, miniatures, mugs from Marrakech, babushka dolls from Russia and dishes she uses for formal dinners.
A friend built these shelves- They are very basic and simple. The everyday dishes are stored here.
She wanted to place the mirror above the sink. The mirror is like a substitute for a window & also allows her to watch her daughters.
Karen’s work space: The wall serves as an inspiration board. A collection of pictures and vintage lamps that she found in various flea markets in the world. The vintage wallpaper she found on eBay. The long working counter is used by all family members- It was originally an industrial counter in a diamond warehouse.
The Girls room: The massive wood closet Karen found in Belgium. The colorful suitcases Karen bought in a flea market in Jaffa.
The master bedroom: Karen loves to collect old handkerchiefs and turn them into decorative pillows. The floral quilt adds a romantic flair to the bed.
The “Make up Desk” in the bedroom. She found the Danish chest of drawers in a local vintage store, the mirror’s from an antique fair in England and the jewelry boxes were bought in various flea markets.
